i have to agree with baritone , only b/c the tubas you can support with your whole body, i could march with those probally and im 5'1''. otherwise i might have said tubas. and yes, i have carried a tuba. ran around the halls with one rofl
someone in here said flute is hard b/c you have to hold it parallel to the ground. but you have to do that with
trumpets marching baritone mellophone flute

dRagonFetus im sorry but i disagree. you cant say tuba is easy until you have tried it SilverWolf6 no one can say that a tuba is hard to carry around....we have a freshman in our band and he is at least 5'6'' or 5'7'' and we have the big tubas that rest around your shoulders and even though he needs a back brace he can run with that sucker and the only time he takes it off is if we have a water break or our director takes a break from the wind line...our other tuba player is a big guy and he takes it off every chance he gets....of course he is just lazy... i guess it depends how strong you are. like i said above, i'm 5'1'' and i can carry a tuba once i get it on me. but then again, i do shotput and discus in track, b/c of which i have to do crunches and pushups everyday (upperbody, mid-body), and i run like a psycho everytime i get the chance (mid-body, lower body)

I play tuba and it gets really heavy. But from observation, I would say the hardest instrument to march with is the bass drum. You can't see anything in front of you, and they look heavy.

Yeah a sousaphone/contra ain't that heavy but when you wear it for hours on end it is death. thats like me saying " yeah baritone is easy, i can hold it, its not that hard".....think about that for a second, it doesn't make sense does it? baritones only hurt when help up for long periods of time. Do you not think it might be the same with tubas. Plus at least in our band Tubas are required to do every visual with the rest of the band. we dont do many crazy things but the simple ones everyone do are 10x harder on tuba. THat and horn slams going up and down....you try bringing that thing up and down as fast as a trumpet next time you get it on you. and for the bass drum comment, tubas can only see to the right side most of the time or the bells aren't strait.
p.s. this is a general comment to everyone (using the last couple i read)

Pretty Needle The bands that literally have shoulder-propped tubas. My band has sousaphones, but I've seen tubas that rest on shoulders.. Ow.
In my band, though, I'd have to say the baritone. It's the biggest instrument held upright, like a trumpet. :3 The tubas that rest on shoulders are MUCH more comfortable to march with, in my opinion. Although, I've never marched a, non-on-the-shoulder-tuba. And just done mini drills with a should tuba. I march baritone, held upright like a tuba. I have some mighty nice pipes. Any body need to know what way to the beach?

Flute sounds so wimpy, but it is the worst. Just try to march it in a perfect backwards right slide. I also got a horrible knot in my left shoulder this band camp. The worst of it is, you can't even hear the flutes. They just look shiny.
But besides that I'd have to say that marching concert tuba looks tough (but I wouldn't really know...)

Elanchana I wouldn't know the hardest, but I do know that flutes are very hard to march with, even though they're not heavy and cumbersome. You have to keep a flute perpendicular to the ground in playing position, which kills your arm if it's done too long, and it's the only instrument that's held sideways, meaning that a right slide is extra hard. I play the flute, so I admire your complete honesty. ( : I had a coach who made us do ten pushups per person everytime somebody's flute wasn't paralell to the ground.

Ok, this isn't exactly 'marching' with the instrument, but we had a heck of a time with our xylophone last year. First, we couldn't find the mallets, then, a wheel fell off, and then we couldn't find where it went for a minute or so. Basically, pit it the most annoying in my opinion, but that's because it's what I do. I have no opinion of the other instruments, but imagine how heavy quads are. xd

I'm just going to agree with the statement that all instruments are hard to march with. It'd be next to impossible to make a real decision accurate because there is certain things about each one that make it difficult.
While I do say that I can't decide on what I think is the hardest, I do know marching with the baritone is hard. Mostly for reasons already said, ya got 20 pounds you have to hold up like a trumpet, you can't see where you're going (if you hold it up properly), and etc. and etc.
It's also quite difficult to play stand songs when everyone is so cramped together. They tell ya to hold it up but you can't because it will either hit someone in the head or be right in their ear. I guess it's the same way with mellophones, trumpets, maybes saxes (it might be a bit easier because the instument is more vertical, but I don't play it so I don't know).
Lucky percussion and sousas though, they're always placed at the bottom of the stand's benches and they always have a lot of room to move around.
