#43 Oddish User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts: The name Oddish is a blend of the words odd, which means strange and peculiar, and radish. Oddish's original Japanese name, Nazonokusa, is a portmanteau of the Japanese words nazono, an adjective meaning puzzling, mysterious or enigmatic; and grass.

Poke'dex Entry: Oddish looks like a small animated onion/turnip plant. Its body is blue, purple or black with two small feet and red eyes. On top of its head grows a large clump of 5 long green leaves.

Oddish is a nocturnal Pokémon, using moonlight rather than the sun's rays for photosynthesis. During the day, Oddish avoids the sun's heat and brightness by burying itself into the earth, leaving only the leaves on top of its head visible above ground. In this way it disguises itself as a plant, misdirecting its carnivorous diurnal predators.

While buried, Oddish nourishes itself by absorbing nutrients from the soil using its feet, which are said to temporarily change into a root-like structure for this purpose.

If anyone pulls at Oddish's leaves and tries to uproot it while it is buried underground, Oddish will react by shrieking in a cute, high-pitched voice. This mirrors the behavior of the legendary mandrake in a similar situation, although it seems that Oddish's squeaks do not have the same dire consequences as a mandrake's.

Once nightfall comes, exposure to moonlight causes Oddish to become much more active. It extracts itself from the ground, and its extremities change back into the shape of legs. It then proceeds to bathe itself in the moonlight and grow, as well as wander around as far as 1,000 feet (approximately 300 metres) scattering its seeds to propagate the species. With the coming of dawn, the cycle repeats.

#44 Gloom User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts: The English name Gloom refers to its seemingly sad appearance; the word bloom may be another influence on its name. The Japanese name Kusaihana is a combination of the Japanese words for stinky (臭, kusai?) and flower (花, hana?).

Poke'dex Entry: Gloom has indeed a gloomy [removed](Although it was revealed in the 3-D games that when they open their eyes, they look incredibly shocked). Bigger than Oddish, Gloom dribbles a kind of ooze from its mouth which is responsible, together with the pollen that emanates from its long petals, for its stench (however the stinking Gloom can become the beautiful Vileplume or Bellossom). Its body is purple and its petals orange. Its petals are similar to Oddish's leaves in a reference to the leaves dying. Its bud also resembles a closed rafflesia flower (a reference to Vileplume's flower).[3] The white markings on this bud are fewer but larger in the female than those of the male.[4]

The fluid that oozes from its mouth isn't drool. It is a sweet nectar that is used to attract prey. Once the prey is attracted, the nectar will cling to the prey, trapping it. The nectar mostly attracts prey that lack a sense of smell, as the nectar smells horrible.[3]

As well as its nectar, the pistil of Gloom's flower smells incredibly foul; it can be smelled from over a mile away. It has been found that approximately 1 in 1,000 people enjoy the scent that Gloom emits. Those that don't enjoy the smell have been known to faint upon smelling it. When Gloom is faced with danger, the stench worsens. If it is feeling calm or secure, it does not release the horrible aroma.[3]

Gloom itself loves the horrid stench it emits. It sniffs the noxious fumes and then drools even more of its nectar. Hence, it is possible that Gloom are attracted to other Gloom that have highly foul scents. However, Gloom are known to confuse themselves at times due to their pollen stench.[3]

Like most Grass Pokemon types, Gloom can hardly move, but it doesn't need to move its limbs to launch an attack.[5]

Strangely, Vilepume's ability is Chlorophyll, even though rafflesia contain neither chlorophyll nor chloroplasts.

#45 Vileplume User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts: The name Vileplume comes from the English words vile, referring to its smell, and plume, referring to its blossom. Vileplume's Japanese name, Ruffresia, is a reference to its resemblance to the Rafflesia genus.

Poke'dex Entry: Vileplume resembles a giant flower, with a short purple stem for a body and large fleshy red petals with white dots atop its head; in this way, it looks nearly identical to the Rafflesia genus of flowers, specifically Rafflesia arnoldii. Vileplume is known for its extremely offensive stench that comes from its large red flower. Vileplume uses this stench in battle, catching its foes off guard when they start to back away from the horrible smell. Vileplume's flower is a bit of a disadvantage in battle, though. It is very heavy and bulky, which makes it a bit of an obstacle for Vileplume. Because of its weight, Vileplume walks very slowly, and it often must use its hands to help support the flower. Vileplume can be found in forests and they like to stay low to the ground. When they sleep, their huge petals droop over their head and they blend in more with the plants around them. They also release toxic, dense pollen into the air in this position so animals don't go near them. The white markings on this flower are larger in the female than in the male.

Strangely, Vilepume's ability is Chlorophyll, even though rafflesia contain neither chlorophyll nor chloroplasts, nor does it learn the ability "Stench".

#46 Paras User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts: The name Paras is a malformation of the word Parasect,[3] its evolved form, a portmanteau of the words, parasite, and insect.[4] The name Paras refers to both the species as a whole, as well as individual species in the games, anime and manga. Its name in the beta versions of Red and Blue was Parasyte.

Poke'dex Entry: Paras resemble a small, orange, coconut crab, with large, colourful fungi, growing from its back. Paras' legs resemble those of insects, and have pincers that are similar to those of a lobster. In the Pokémon universe, Paras would be born with tiny spores covering their body, which grow as the Pokémon feeds, called tochukaso mushrooms. It is noted in the Pokédex, that the mushrooms would sap energy from the host, causing the Paras to continuously burrow underground in forest areas to gnaw on tree roots, since the tuchokaso would draw most of the energy from the roots. The mushrooms themselves would have strong healing properties, and would be valued for their life extending properties.

#47-Parasect User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts: The name Parasect is derived from the words parasite and insect, in reference to the parasite-host pairing and Parasect's Bug type.

Poke'dex Entry: Parasect looks a little like a hermit crab, but instead of a shell, this Pokémon has a large spotted mushroom cap fixed on top of its body. Parasect also has four legs and two large pincers. Its two eyes are completely white and pupil-less.

Parasect as a whole consists of the actual crab-like Pokémon and its symbiote, a large mushroom with a spotted cap which is attached to Parasect's back. While the mushroom parasites can already be seen on its pre-evolved form, Paras, in Parasect the relationship between host and parasites has become more unbalanced - the fungal parasite has actually taken over the host organism instead of merely coexisting along with it.

Parasect's habitat and way of life are greatly influenced in favor of the parasitic mushroom's interests. A Parasect chooses to make its home in damp and dark places fit for fungi, such as caves or underground. It is nourished by draining nutrients off the roots and lower trunk of large trees, nutrients which are in turn extracted off Parasect's body by the mushroom. In this way, Parasect is both a parasite and a victim of a parasite.

The mushroom parasite can scatter toxic spores in self-defense. The toxicity of the spores increases in proportion to the mushroom's size. Despite their hazardous properties, these spores form components of herbal medicine, a discipline practiced especially in China. The mushroom propagates itself by leaving spores on Parasect's eggs. That way, even when Parasect dies or is completely consumed by the mushroom, the species will hopefully live on in Parasect's offspring. This also explains the origin of the mushroom symbiotes found on the back of Paras. The mushroom is also prized for its numerous healing qualities-Parasect mushrooms are said to be a component in healing potions.

#48 Venonat User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts: The name "Venonat" is a combination of venom and gnat, a small insect. Its Japanese name comes from the English word compound eyes, describing its appearance.

Poke'dex Entry: Venonat is a moderately large insect-like creature resembling a ball of purple fur with large red bee-eyes (or fly eyes as they look similar), a pair of pincers substituting for a mouth, rudimentary non-insectoid hands and feet, and a pair of grey antennae. Its fuzzy-but-stiff exterior seems to have evolved on Venonat over the ages which, along with the poison that consistently coats the whole body, serves to protect Venonat from being targeted as prey.

Venonat can be seen as the larval and pupal form of what it eventually becomes—the moth Pokémon Venomoth—but it already demonstrates characteristics of moths. It is a nocturnal insectivore in spite of being an insect itself. Since these bug Pokémon only appear at night, Venonat lives an arboreal lifestyle, sleeping in a hole in a tree until night falls, after which it will scavenge for food at the base of its tree.

Venonat’s distinctive eyes are its most notable feature. They are structured like the eyes of a bee, as in, its eyes are clusters of many, many tiny eyes. This is apparent to onlookers when observing Venonat in an especially bright setting. These optic arrays, allow the Pokémon to live and forage in darkness and to spot even the most minuscule of prey. Like a moth, Venonat is instinctively attracted to bright lights during the night-time, so it is often seen around city lamp posts. The most startling function of Venonat’s eyes are apparent in a trainer-directed Pokémon battle; it can shoot literal laser beams from its eyes at the opponent. (Psybeam attack: fires a psychic beam that may cause confusion)

Venonat also bears a strong resemblance to Butterfree, especially the facial features.

#49-Venomoth User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts: Venomoth's name comes from the words venom and moth, referring to its poisonous fangs and wing scales and the real species it is based on. The name Venomoth refers to the species as a whole, as well as to individual specimens in the games, anime, manga, trading cards, and other media.

Poke'dex Entry: Venomoth looks quite a lot like an oversized moth. It has a pair of pale violet wings shaped like a butterfly's, a purple body and a violet abdomen. It has two glassy blue eyes. It also has very small legs and mandibles.[3]

Venomoth is a nocturnal Pokémon. It is an insectivore - it eats bug pokémon, preferring most those that fly around streetlights transfixed by their luminoscity, thus making easy prey.] Venomoth are often hunted by Zubat, Golbat, and Crobat.

Venomoth's main means of attack and defense against larger foes are the powdery scales covering its wings. These scales are hard to remove, and they contain highly toxic dust which is released on contact with the wings or whenever Venomoth flaps them. If Venomoth beats its wings fast and violently enough, it can let loose large clouds of powder all around it, making contact with it inevitable.

The exact effects of Venomoth's powder depends on its color, which corresponds with the color of the scales it originated from: dark colored powder is poisonous, while lighter colored powder will induce paralysis. Its name comes from venom and moth.

#50 Diglett User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts: Diglett's name seems to combine dig and piglet or lett as a diminutive suffix. Its Japanese name simply refers to the word dig. In the English beta version of Pokémon Red and Blue, Diglett's name was still Digda.

Poke'dex Entry: Diglett is a small mole-like creature. The top of its head is rounded, and its thin skin is covered with short brown fur. It has two small black eyes and a large roundish pink nose. Interestingly, to date, no one has ever seen the entire body of a Diglett. If seen above ground, it usually only sticks its body out of the ground about 8 inches (0.2 meters). Therefore it is impossible to know Diglett's true size, even when they are called out of their Pokeballs. Some believe it has legs that it uses to dig, while others believe it is limbless and instead burrows like a worm or snake. The game Pokémon Snap appears to support the latter, as Digletts can be seen leaping out of their holes. However, in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games, it was suggested that Diglett have legs. The best answer is that they have very small legs that make little difference in height. This also supports the reason they never walk; their legs are too small to walk with. An interesting thing to note about Diglett (and Dugtrio) is that they learn Cut, Scratch and Slash. This also supports the theory that they have arms/claws.

Diglett appears to be very similar to the artificial moles used in Whac-A-Mole arcade games.

Diglett's thin skin makes it vulnerable when it spends too much time aboveground. The sunlight can heat up its blood, weakening the Diglett. Therefore its natural habitat is underground, usually about one meter below the surface. When it burrows along at this shallow level, displaced soil can be seen along its path aboveground as a result. This makes it popular among farmers, who use Diglett to till their fields, preparing them to grow crops.

Diglett's natural diet consists of the roots of wild plants it finds while burrowing. It also likes to live in the huge tunnels made by the Pokémon Onix, due to leftover scraps of food.

#50 Dugtrio User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts: Dugtrio's name combines dug, the past tense of the English verb dig, and trio, a group of three.

Poke'dex Entry: Dugtrio are mole-like creatures. The tops of its heads are rounded, and its thin skin is covered with short brown fur. It has two small black eyes and a large roundish pink nose on each head. Interestingly, to date, no one has ever seen the entire body of a Dugtrio or its unevolved form Diglett. If seen above ground, it usually only sticks its body out of the ground about 2 feet, 4 inches (0.7m). Therefore it is impossible to know Dugtrio's true size. Some believe it has legs that it uses to dig, while others believe it is limbless and instead burrows like a worm or snake. An interesting thing to note about Dugtrio (and Diglett) is that they learn Cut, Scratch and Slash. This seems to support the theory that they have arms/claws.

Dugtrio, like Diglett, appears to be very similar to the artificial moles used in Whac-A-Mole arcade games.

Dugtrio is unusual in that, like Magneton, it is simply three members of its pre-evolutionary species, Diglett, irreversibly joined. The three heads actually split from one Diglett during evolution, so all three think exactly alike. Working together, the three heads allow Dugtrio to dig down to 60 miles (97 km) below sea level, where the soil and rock is very hard. While doing this, Dugtrio is able to trigger earthquakes. Although Dugtrio is composed of three Diglett, it weighs as much as 30 Diglett.

#53 Meowth User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts: It is one of the more popular Pokémon species, largely thanks to the Pokémon anime, which features a Meowth as a main character. This Meowth, belonging to Team Rocket, the anime's major antagonists, is one of the few Pokémon that can speak. He has a Koban on his forehead, a reference both to the traditional depiction of the maneki neko, which carries a koban, and to the Japanese idiom 'like a koban to a cat' (猫に小判, neko ni koban), which has a meaning approximately the same as the English phrase cast pearls before swine. (See Spoink)

Meowth's name probably comes from "meow", the sound made by cats, possibly by combining it with "mouth". This is supported in the cartoon; whenever Meowth says something rude or demoralizing to Jessie and James, Jessie usually retorts "Shut your big Meowth!". It is also possible that Meowth's name is an English approximation of its Japanese name (which can be Romanized as Nyarth), which is similarly derived from onomatopoeia for the sound cats make, which is commonly "nyā" in Japan.

Poke'dex Entry: Meowth has a distinctly feline appearance, resembling a small housecat. It has cream-colored fur, which turns brown at its paws and tail tip. Its oval-shaped head features prominent whiskers, black-and-brown ears and a gold oval coin (also known as "charm") embedded in its forehead. Meowth's coloration, its love of coins (see below) and its charm indicate that Meowth is based on the Japanese Maneki Neko, a cat-shaped figurine that is said to bring good luck and money to its owner.

Meowth is an urban nocturnal Pokémon. It spends most of the daytime sleeping and prowls the city streets at night. When hunting, Meowth organize themselves in groups that act like gangs, foraging or stealing food from people. They are aided in their mischief by their eyes which allow them night vision. They also retract their claws back into their paws, which grants them silent movement and protecting them from leaving distinctively incriminating pawprints that alert people to their actions.

Like the bowerbird, Meowth is attracted to certain objects that catch its attention, which it collects at every opportunity and hoards in its nest. Murkrow, a Pokémon which is even more like the bowerbird, exhibits similar behaviour and members of the two species have been known to steal from the collections of the other. Meowth loves round shaped objects, as well as shiny, glittering things. The item it adores collecting the most, however, are coins, since they are both round and shiny. Meowth is known to scour the pavements for dropped loose change and even to openly steal money from people to add to its collection.

In battle, Meowth can throw the coins it has accumulated at its opponents with the Pay Day attack, a technique unique to its evolution chain. If the player wins the battle, the scattered coins are picked up from the ground and are added to his account as profit, although the attack is quite weak and gives little money each time. This is a reference to the Maneki Neko, as in this way the Meowth essentially brings its trainer money, if somewhat indirectly.

#53 Persian User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts: It is the evolved form of Meowth. Persian is named after the real-life breed of cat, the Persian.

Poke'dex Entry: Although its fur has many admirers, Persian are tough to raise as pets due to their fickle meanness. It will attack in an instant, and it can tear apart its prey on a mere whim. When it raises its tail straight up, it is a sign that it is about to pounce and bite.

The gem on its head glows on its own. Its light muscles allow it to walk without a sound, and it walks with all the grace and elegance of proud royalty. Many adore it for this sophisticated air. However, it will often lash out and scratch for little reason.

Persian has six bold whiskers that give it a look of toughness. The whiskers sense air movements to determine what is in the direct vicinity. It becomes docile if grabbed by the whiskers.

When Meowth evolve into Persian, they become less social. For this reason they move from the city into a grassy field area.

#54 Psyduck User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts: It is a Basic water type Pokémon, #54 in the National Pokédex, #138 in Johto and #158 in Hoenn. It first appeared in the Red/Blue games. Psyduck is a pre-evolution of Golduck, and possesses water, physical, and psychic attacks. It resembles a yellow duck (some say platypus), though quite cartoonish; besides its yellow feathers, it has three little black feathers on its head. Its expression is a constant empty stare. Despite psychic attacks being its trademark (especially in the anime), Psyduck is not a Psychic-type Pokémon, however it can learn psychic via being bred with a pokémon that knows psychic though it cannot learn it via TM.

According to the Pokédex, Psyduck's look is supposed to trick enemies into thinking that it is a weak Pokémon. It also suffers from vicious headaches, the reason why it clutches its head with its paws. Once its headache "peaks", its full power is shown. Psyduck is a parasomniac.

Even though this Pokémon is a duck-type, it is not type Flying and learns no Flying attacks (except Aerial Ace from a TM). This may be a proof that this Pokémon is more likely to be a platypus-type.

Poke'dex Entry: At first, Psyduck is a crazy Pokémon who possesses no ability to battle. Upon developing an intense headache, Psyduck releases mysterious psychokinetic powers. After performing these 'strange' powers, Psyduck goes promptly to sleep and when it awakes it has no recollection about the events. Thus, that is a likely reason why it has headaches. It's trying to remember what happened.

#55 Golduck User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts: In all games, Golduck appear as large bipedal ducks, with blue skin and powerful tails. They also have strong legs and arms to swim with, and each has a red jewel on its forehead which is connected to its telekinetic powers.

Its name could be derived from the word duck, the animal which it is based on, and the color gold, ironic because its pre-evolved form, Psyduck is gold-colored, whereas Golduck is blue. The name Golduck can refer to the species as a whole, as well to individual Golduck in the games, anime and manga.

Poke'dex Entry: Golduck live in fresh-water lakes and in rivers, though they can also be seen occasionally in coastal waters. Golduck are fast swimmers, outswimming even the most athletic of humans because of their frog-like webbed hands and feet. The gem on their foreheads glows when they use psychic powers as well as when they swim at full speed, suggesting that they sometimes use those powers to swim.

Golduck have webbed hands and feet, ending in broad flippers, which they use to swim in rivers and lakes, much in the way as a duck would move. Their blue bodies are especially adapted to have a great hydrodynamic shape, and they have long tails with which they use to steer. Due to their bluish color and webbed hands and feet, Golduck are sometimes mistaken for the Japanese monster and physical inspiration for Golduck, the Kappa. The fact that Golduck have no wings, only webbed hands and feet, may be proof that Golduck is a platypus Pokémon instead of a duck.

It has been noted that Golduck will often join swimmers when training, using their adept Psychic abilities to increase their swimming capability. They are sometimes found rescuing people lost at sea from danger, their heads shimmering from the telekinetic powers that allow them do so. The headaches that ridiculed its Basic evolution form, Psyduck, don’t trouble Golduck, allowing them to have full use of their formidable mental powers.

#56-Mankey User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts: The name "Mankey" could be a portmanteau of the words "Monkey" and either "Manic" or "Lanky", or simply a misspelling of the "manky", a British Isles slang word meaning "dirty". Its species classification is "Pig Monkey". Mankey resembles a white fluffball with arms, legs, and a tail sticking out. Its face features red eyes and a prominent, pig-like snout. Mankey is known to fly into rages when it is disturbed.

Poke'dex Entry: Mankey are light and agile, living in groups in the treetops; if one loses sight of its group, it becomes infuriated with loneliness. They are extremely quick to anger, and can be docile one moment and thrashing wildly the next. They will not hesitate to attack anything, and often attack others in their group for no reason. If one does get violently enraged, it is unsafe to approach it, as it can't distinguish between friend and foe. It is easy to tell when a Mankey becomes angry, as it starts shaking and its nasal breathing turns rough. However, because it angers so quickly it is nearly impossible for anyone to escape its wrath.

#57 Primeape User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts: "Primeape" is a compound word formed from the words prime (chief) and ape. It may also be a portmanteau of primal and ape. The combination of both also makes the name sound like primate. The original Japanese name, "okorizaru," is also a portmanteau. "Okori" probably comes from "okoru", a verb for "to be angry." "Zaru" comes from "saru", meaning "monkey."

Poke'dex Entry: Primeape's body is covered in white fur. It has two long arms and legs, each with a metal clasp at the wrists and ankles. Unlike its preevolved form Mankey, Primeape has no tail. Its face features a prominent, pig-like snout, and a cross-shaped bulge on the side of its head. In Japanese cartoon drawing, this represents a throbbing vein and thus anger or frustration.

Primeape's most defining and prominent characteristic is its extremely violent attitude. It is almost perpetually furious for an indeterminate reason or perhaps for no reason at all, making it impossible to figure out a way to pacify it. It is said that a Primeape only calms down when it is completely alone, but since it is naturally very difficult to observe a Primeape in such a state without alerting it to one's presence, this is largely a moot point. However, if Primeape does calm down in loneliness, one could presume that what makes it angry may be, in fact, everybody else.

A Primeape certainly takes offense at being looked at, especially if one happens to look directly into its eyes. It can sense when someone is watching it, even if it is asleep. Once angry at a particular person, Primeape will relentlessly chase the hapless offender, even in a half-awake, half-asleep stupor. Primeape is notorious for incessantly tracking down its prey - it never stops its pursuit, no matter how far it takes it. From its point of view, it will give up only when it has caught its quarry and beat it up. Reports are coming in that Primeapes are lately becoming even more violent and frenzied.

This uncomplicated approach to life may help Primeape in battles, since the angrier it becomes, the faster its blood circulates around its body, enhancing its physical strength. Unfortunately for Primeape, this strength comes at the cost of some of its intelligence, so that it may actually end up at a disadvantage.
