Squinting against the few particles of sand that tried to intrude on her vision, the mare took the opportunity to follow Zeda's gaze until she too saw the plant a distance away. It wasn't that far a walk, in fact, if the foal was prepared to wade her way through the sand then the mare would escort her to it.

"I'm not entirely sure, I think one of the stallions called one of the plants in this area a 'cactus'...but he never said what it looked like." She confessed, recalling Cloud's insults about cacti when he had first arrived at her teepee - she'd never quite figured out what he was one about.

"Do yo uwant to get a closer look?" She asked with a smile.

"Nah." she said as she turned around and faced the opposite direction of the desert. More snow was falling from the clouds above and Zeda stuck out her tongue. Letting the white pieces land onto it, as it melted, it just pretty much tasted like water. "I thought snow would taste sweet because...uh...isn't that what snow is suppose to taste like?" she said puzzled. Zeda did not remember where she'd heard that fact from but she had remembered it. Or maybe she just made it up in her mind.

Zeda started feeling a bit bored. Maybe the plant thing wasn't so bad. The small filly turned around facing the cactus. Taking her steps slowly towards it, she could feel the wind bring the grain up and blow them against her body. Once they'd touch her they would slide down until there was a stop. Making Zeda feel like she was being poked by very very very small fingers. Something like if bugs were poking her. As she got close enough to looking at the item sitting there, her neck lowered her head. Some parts of this plant has been damaged, there are some dents made. Like if something ran into it, and it's spikes were deadly looking indeed. At least the flower was good looking and not so threatening.

"I can't say that I ever thought snow tasted so sweet, but we each have our own senses and not every one is the same." Yei pointed out wisely, chuckling softly as she followed after the young filly and navigated her way through the sand. Lik the snow, she found it difficult to get a decent grip, the sand grasped and clung to her to the point hat she sand on occasions and had to drag herself forward - perhaps it was her weight, but she couldn't see herself thriving in these climates.

Nevertheless, as she approached the cactus she did tilt her head to the side and observed the damage. Evidently, something quite big had rammed in ot it, the spikes looked somewhat daunting but the saying really was true...Beauty really wans't just skin deep.

"Never judge a bud by the sepal." She mused softly and flicked her ears forward, moving closer to inspect the plants wounds. When she drew nearer, she became aware of the fact that it was moist inside!

"Oh my, I think it's bleeding!"

Zeda was puzzled and turned her head sharply to look at Yei. "Plants can bleed?" she never heard of that before. Although, she knew the plant is a living creature, or considered as one but would they bleed? This is somethign strange. Sand brushed by her body and nostrils. Feeling a sneeze coming, Zeda held her breathe, it was then when she started coughing instead of sneezing. Sucking in a few grains into her throat made her cough more. She turned away from the wind, and spat out the grains. "Bleh, this stuff doesn't taste good." mumbled the filly as she turned around again.

"Would you die if you touched the spikes?" taking a lok down at the silent plant. If they could bleed, does that mean the could talk also? Thought Zeda. Strange idea but got her curious.

"It looks like it is." Yei replied dubiously as he leaned in closer and motioned to the sap seeping out of the 'injured' side of the cactus. It smelt surprisingly sweet and she couldn't help but wonder what it tasted like - it even seemed fresh, like water!

"And I don't think you're supposed to eat the sand, Zeda." Yei gave a soft giggle and nudged the foal gently towards the injured plant, "You're supposed to dine on foliage, but I suspect this one would be hard to swallow." She continued before directing her gaze back towards the bleeding cactus.

She was about to reply to her next question when -

"You would not die, if you touched the spikes." A male voice interrupted and with a stirring of the sands behind them, a multicoloured wind landed softly. He kept his distance and simply arched a brow at the pair, perhaps finding the sight to be somewhat peculiar.

"However, it may sting if you smashed into them at an uncontrolled speed." He continued softly, choosing to ignore the somewhat disgruntled stare of the red mare.

"Grencia." She mumbled softly.

Tilting her head to one side, Zeda looked from Yei and this new stallion who had approached them. Where did he come from? She turned to look at the plant and the spikes seem pretty sharp, guessing it would really hurt if you slammed into it.

Focussing back on the new arrival, "Do you live here?" Asking curiously. He looked very different from any other soquili Zeda has ever met or seen. He too had chicken wings and they were sparkly, just liek her father's body. His tail was...unique, and there were these things sticking out on top of his head, it was not hair. Maybe feathers. Over all, this male looked impressive. With looks like him, Zeda definetly wanted to know where he had come from. Perhaps soem palce far, or here.

Yei simply smiled at Zeda's questions, it was easier to let the little filly talk to him than it was for the grown mare to deal with the rather unwelcomed guest. It wasn't that she fought with him, or that he was an enemy but he had a way of simply appearing and she was renowned for her dislike of the Wind Soquili race - actually, she was renowned for her dislike f any race that was in anyway different to her even if she couldn't explain why - it seemed the memories were trapped.

Nevertheless, it seemed Grencia had chosen to ignore Yei's disapproving gaze for the time being and he offered a pleasant smile towards the filly. Admittedly, considering his coat colour and the heat of the desert he could have very well lived here and survived rather well but alas...

"No, I do not live here." He replied softly and nodded towards the mountainsides, the same mountainsides that Yei had mentioned she lived in. "I come from the highest peaks of those mountains...and you, young one?"
PostPosted: Sat Mar 03, 2007 8:24 am

She looked towards the mountains as he spoke and they looked so mysterious. I wonder how many soquilis live there... Turnign back she tilted her head and tried to remmeber where she had come from. "Uhm...I think it's called...forest. It's full of trees," not sure if she was right or not.

His wings were really colorful and it attracked her eyes. She walked towards them and sniffed them. Remembering how she tried to bite one of the foal's wings before. Although it seriously did look like food, well chicken, now she wondered if it tasted like chicken. Possibly. She hasn't tried and isn't going to. Berries is all she'll eat. Her favourite food ever since Yei has given some to her.

Zeda remembered Yei had mention herself falling from the mountains. Or have fallen and hurt herself near the mountains. Not sure. "Were you..." she decided not to continue because maybe Yei didn't want anyone else to know. Since Yei has tought her so much, it'd be better if she respected the red mare now.

Taking a tep back from the stallion, she thought of another thing to say, "The mountains look so cld, and you look so uhm...warm. It doesn't look like you live there."

Grencia bobbed his head slightly and offered a warm smile in response to her observation. He was aware of how out of place he might have looked, but then again - she was terribly colourful herself. Refraining from commenting, he followed her gaze towards the mountains and released a sigh.

"They are rather cold at this time of year." He confirmed gently, "But during the summer they are much more pleasant. You might find I fit in much more easily during such times." He pointed out before tilting his head to the side, unfurling a wing so that she could get a better look at his flight feathers.

Meanwhile, Yei continued to watch from a 'distance', her eyes drawn towards the pair as Grencia demonstrated a different side. He still instilled her with some form of irritation but she had never seen him with children before - he really was rather good.

Is it even possible to have summer up in the mountains. Zeda always thought top of mountains would be like blizzards and much more during the humid times. Altho Zeda hasn't experienced summer yet, she was born in winter.

"Does those chicken wings do anything?" tilting her head. She has seen birds fly with wings like that but she didn't see chickens fly. Wings like that often reminded her of food, for some odd reason. There wasn't much to say anymore since all she wnated was for her questions answered so she could understand this world more. Most questions has been answered by Yei.

"Chicken wings..." Grencia responded faintly before releasing a soft chuckle, he really should have been prepared for such a question. Still, as she spoke he allowed a few moments to consider his answers before unfurling the limbs in question. At once, the light reflected off the metallic surface and he promptly shuddered to encourage the blood to flow into them.

"Allow me to demonstrate." He murmured softly, taking a breath and lifting himself into a rear. He then began to flap his wings, sending a surprise 'gust' of wind towards the young filly - within moments, he had even lifted off the ground. Nevertheless, as he continued to flap his wings he did have to move them much more quickly to remain suspended...there wasn't enough wind at this height to hover.

"Like a bird..." He dropped to his hooves again and whickered, "I have the ability to soar across the sky."

The wind blew her off her feet and she fell right onto her bottom. Although her eyes were wide as she watched the male float upwards and land back down without trouble. She really wanted wings. "I want to do that!" she cried at Grencia,"could I get wings?" Wondering maybe if she plucked a few feathers off of a bird and attacked them to her back, maybe she could fly as well. "That looked so....wow!" nodding with a grin. "How come chickens don't fly?" They have wings but they rarely lift off from the ground. Zeda got up and circled the stallion round and round.

She ran to a pile of sand and tried to jump off of it to see f she woudl nd up flying, instead she ended up on her bottom again. "I really want to fly, is there anyway I could get wings?" she said as she ran to him and jumped up and down. "Could I? Could I?!"

If looks could kill, Grencia would have been transformed into ash there and then - Yei was positively smouldering and with every word that came out of his mouth, she seemed to be getting worse. Actually, when Zeda began to ask if she could fly...well, Grencia should have retreated then and there.

"Some chickens can fly." Grencia murmured gently and attempted to recover from his potentially disastrous interaction with the young filly. "The males can...the roosters." He pointed out before releasing a sigh and very gently nudging the filly to her feet - he truly didn't want to dash her dreams.

"But the females cannot - this is not to say they are special but they have a much greater purpose in life than to soar through the skies." He continued and with that he unfurled a wing, nudging at his flight feathers until one was reasonably loose for the young filly to tug off if she wished.

"The males can fly because they need to be able to see danger from afar and to protect the females...but the females -" He hesitated and cocked his head to the side, how was he meant to say this without getting completely mauled by the mare behind him?

"They care for the two-leggers, provide them with food. They receive love willingly and give it unconditionally to their baby chicks. They protect those chicks, care for them and teach them the ways of the world from their eyes - if they were flying around all day, they could not do that." He mused and released a chuckle.

"I suppose that doesn't mean that they don't sometimes wish they could fly, but a part of me believes that they would rather stay the way they are." He finished, swivelling his ears to listen for the sound of stampeding hooves but nothing came...he stole a tentative glance over his shoulder and much to his surprise, Yei seemed to be listening as well.

"Chickens and soquili are much the same...although some females can fly, there are a great many soquili who cannot. All soquili are born with a purpose, some are meant to fly but those who cannot are destined to do great things elsewhere."

"Such as?" Yei enquired from behind him, her voice somewhere between a drawl and curiosity.

"Those without wings, are far greater explorers than those with them..." Grencia replied, "As peculiar as it sounds - those without wings can see far more of the world than those with them can dream of...One day I expect that you - " He looked towards Zeda once more, his eyes warm and reassuring, "Will tell many great tales of what you have seen and those with wings will wish that they were you."

She looked down without even looking at Grencia, it seemed like she was sad at first, like if her dreams were destroyed. They were. Although after a while of thinking she shot her head straight up with a grin. "Oh well, even if I can't fly I'll...I'll...maybe some day I'll see uhm..." she wanted to say her children but she didn't felt that way to have children. Oh god, wouldn't she be a horrible mother if she did.

It was then when the subject had changed. "When I grow up will I change?" not sure if they got what her question meant. Zeda wanted to know many things, and her mother was rarely there for her. Neither has she seen her father too much or her grandma. She was on her own to discover the meaning of...life.

When I grow up will I change?

The words echoed coldly in Yei's ears and as the swivelled round to focus on the young filly, her eyes grew troubled. She had never been asked that question and she had met many foals in her time, she had watched the grow and she had taught them many things... She just couldn't understand, she doubted she ever would.

...Why would a foal be left on her own?

How she wished that Grencia would speak, but he seemed more at a loss for words than even she. He looked bewildered and somewhat lost beneath the question - one so very sad and yet very important. He had answered the question about flight perfectly, even she had been touched but now...?

As though he had read her mind, his emerald eyes flicked to her.

"Yes, you will." Yei replied at last, a small smile flickering onto her lips as she moved forward. Closing the gap, she gave a tentative and almost maternal nuzzle to the filly before continuing - if anything, her tone was reassuring when she spoke.

"You will grow taller, stronger...and with each new thing you see and do you will learn." She explained gently, "You will never stop learning, never stop growing and one day you may even be as wise as the elders of these lands." She canted her head to the side and gave a bemused chuckle as she pictured the much larger and more 'divine' soquili.

"You will tell stories and you will teach those younger than you. You will guide them and let them know about all the things you do..." She released a sigh and glanced down at where the scar on her chest lay, "You will always change, but it isn't something to be afraid off and sometimes...yu won't even know it's happened."
