ok so here is my whole thing with cymbals... they are the best thing a drumline can have...because cymbals are the only ones who know how to rock em high...trust me... my drumline this past year was 5 basses, 2 tenors, 3 snares, and 2 cymbals, and we were one kickass drumline... you name a cadence and we could play it, of course our basses had been in there spots for 2 years so they new how to play.... cymbals are the icing on the cake as my band director would always tell us... and believe it or not alot of judges like cymbals, especially when they do visuals... you do not realize how many extra points our visuals got us... anyway...there is my view on cymbals, oh and our assistant band director was a cymbalist in the virginia tech drumline for four years, its not that he couldnt get anything else...he just had to much fun playing cymbals...any questions about our cadences or anything...plz pm me...i love talkin about our drumline...i might even send some vids....

(no really, there were 3 people in pit.) and a medium line (10 ppl) but our drumline had such cool visuals for us, and we beat out most of the other percussion sections. blaugh

We've never had a cymbal line (at least in the past 3 years I've been here). The music department (mainly the band) is so under appreciate. I fear that soon there will be no marching band because it just keeps getting smaller and smaller! crying

That's a shame... I love cymbals. But I know that they gotta be really gooud. They can really up visual points. And I love their effects. I learned how to play them, but I love bass drum alot more. ;}

I wouldn't want to march in a cymbal line (I'd feel like an even bigger dork xd ) but they are really cool to watch. Some of the things they can do are just soo cool!

I hate being the one not really doing much cuz my drum weighs more than me when there are people doing awesome visuals! I love marching Cymbals! so fun! So fun...

my band lost all members of the drumline except 2 who are sophomores. so now we had 1 freshman come up playing snare and 2 people had to switch over to base drum. so we have 1 quads, 2 snares and 2 base drums. our drum major plays cymbals for the star spangled banner but thats it.

I've never played cymbals during marching band season, but they are important. For my school, they spin on the field. They are especially important if your band DOESN'T HAVE A PIT. (Cause not all bands do. I can't think of one!)

When i was learning how they said "If it doesn't hurt, your not doing it right."

alhandra patchoulii I hate plates. Marching cymbals is completely optional. I don't see the point of them, anyway, the parts could easily be covered in the pit. It's like battery for beginners. rolleyes not true. marching cymbals have all types of sounds. in the pit, the most we do with cymbals, is hit suspended cymbals. in the line, they do all types of stuff, like sizzles, crashes, bell taps, and flashes. they add flash to the line, while making the music thicker ( if you know what i mean)

Anyone who says that marching cymbals contribute nothing to a line has never seen nor heard a good cymbal line. Our line marches 9 cymbal players and we try to play with a corps style technique (which allows for a variety of sound effects) in addition to doing a lot of visual stuff. And when you have 18 cymbals to work with, the sky's the limit on visuals. While they are a less significant factor to the sound, I think a talented cymbal line is more entertaining to watch than a battery section.
