belladonna_spiral why are drummers so cocky? wtf? you might as well have picked any instrument in the band.
we're not cocky, we're proud. we're proud because we're good. we're good because we love what we do and play whenever we can.
if you want a person who adores their instrument like no one else... find a drummer. heart heart Agreeeed. Percussion isn't as easy as it looks.

lol, of course we're cocky, cause we know we're the best players in the band, we have the hardest job, keeping you guys in tempo while we also keep eachother from screwing up seeing how we have 4 different instruments composing our section, its even worse in marching band, have you ever tried actually playing fast song on the drums with other drummers and trying to hit the head at the exact same time as another person, that and playing complicated songs without music (cause snare music will NEVER stay still mile you march, bass drums dont have a way to hold music nor do cymbals, and quads, probably the same as snare, we're just too cocky and go without music anyways). and have you ever tried marching an entire mile while carrying a ******** drum and playing nonstop cadences in the freezing rain cause the other instruments had to stop plaing to shield their instruments from the rain, doing that without slowing down or stoping or even resting your arms while also matching everyone else on the line, thats hell, but we do it cause we're that god damn good. we're cocky because we deserve it, we're the hardest working and best sounding section of the band, we're also the most coordinated and intelligent (have you ever tried writing out 10 cadences then submitting them all to memory along with every cadence the line has made in the past), and we know it. the BD also pays the least attention to the line giving us a really short time to actually practice these songs in school but we still perfect them. but even then, the trumpets are always the most cocky section in a band.
"We play drums, we go first!" "Without us, its just one big trumpet solo!"
we are drumline and proud, we're the best and we'll lock you inside a bass drum if you disagree (or at least the case, trust me, we've done it before)

Kokihi I dont know about the drums not getting as much practice... My drumline has practice three times a week for 2 hrs. our drumline should do that but our squad leaders suck and have no idea what their doing. the BD picks who is squad leader, we have no say in the matter. also our principal made a new rule that if you are found on school grounds after school has been let out without a pass to see a teacher, your trespassing and he will call the police on you. so yeah, we get only a small bit of time to actually practice

anybody here heard a jazz band trying to play with no one on the drums? The Jazz band at my school was trying to play Sing Sing Sing, and the drummer was sick... they sounded like crap.

Rhyala Not a hard instrument? please. Don't try to make a point without researching it first, sweetie. You end up looking stupid. Drums, and percussion, is more than just tempo. And the reason we're so cocky is because we have to put up with so many judgemental idiots. Seriously. Everyone thinks that percussion is just BANG BANG BOOM and the day is done. Everyone at my school plays the percussion instruments when they're not supposed to. But when I touch their trumpet they threaten to piss in my mouth.

You try marching and playing the whole time, even cymbals (easiest in my school at least) are hard on the arms. imagine holding 20 pound cymbals like that for 4 miles!! Oh and of course the marching snare, oh no, that can't be hard, you just have to match everybody with the same stick patterns and accents. But wait no haven't even said the two hardest. Bass and Quints. Yeah I said Bass. If you're one of five different pitches that you can't control what the others do, now that takes skill if one messes up you have to improv and practice if you want to get it right. oh and quints because there's 5 different drums that are hard enough to carry let alone play. But that's just my opinion. We maybe cocky but I know my Drumline Deserves It.

Ok first, not all drummers are cocky. I play in the drumline and it's not easy. To put it other terms try carrying 25-35 pounds ALL on your shoulders with virtually NO padding for 2 hours straight during school practice and 4 hours straight during summer. And at shows and contests our line won more percussion awards than any other school in our district and class. Not to mention we ran a mile a day during summer camp which is 3 weeks.
Now to point number two.
The drumline instruments.
Quins: You have 5 drums on one person. Ours weigh about 35 pounds. You would can't see your feet so it's alot easier to trip.
Snare: Ours way about 30 pounds. If there are more than one you have to match stick heights and you have to be timed EXACTLY on time.
Bass: Ours weigh from 20 - 35 pounds. I think they are the hardest. You can barley see in front of you and have to play sideways. You also have to match heights and if one messes up then you have to fix it. Which is extremely hard on a 32nd note split. (( drum lingo warning ))

Feh. Try listening to some drum solos, try playing without any mistakes to really fast jazz, try keeping the beat for a whole big band on a huge piece. You'll see how hard keeping a beat is then. Sure, It's easy to make a note on a drum, but keeping a beat is different.
