Instead of a get function, it uses loadvarnum or loadmovie IE: I use an external counter using PHP within flah, and I load the updated text document using: this.loadVariables("counter.php?num="+random(100)) In this script, I load the external file into flash, and display the contents. The random function allows the user to substantially limit the chance of loading a duplicate file from the cache, thus always providing a fresh version of the file, for all intensive purposes. In this fashion, most server-ide languages can interact with flash, especially PHP.

thegr8flashy Hoggs cragwag thegr8flashy one q from me: as far as I am concerned, the flash part will do itself as long as the graphics are good =) You would want both flash and HTML website. Some people can't load/takes to long to load with flash. Flash is often loads faster, compare a normal image to a static flash animation. The flash file would be smaller due to it's vector graphics. wink Technically, its stereotypical to think that flash takes longer to load, as well as take less. It all depends on the content to be used within flash. Because of its format, flash tend to be on th slim side because of the way it compresses things. For instance, if you were to display a movie file (.mpeg) flat rate, it would probably be around 2-3 megs and take some time to load. Now if you take that same video file and import it into flash, gaggle with the export settings a little bit, and then export it in the .swf format, the file would most likely end up being around 200 kb. Like I said, its not really a correct statement to say its faster or slower, simply because its so versatile would make up the difference. The main reason I would see someone choosing flash over an entirely static site is the compatibility with other languages, as well as the seamless display, AND the ability to render things the same way on any browser. If you format your files correctly, anyone viewing your work will see exactly what you want them to see. And like i said before, the excuse "Not everyone can see flash" is obsolete. It may have been true 5 years ago, but as of right now, almost 78% of all sites on the internet contain some form or method which requires the flash plugin, and a staggering 98% of the internet-surfing population already have the plugin installed, most of which who are unaware of the plugins' existence. Its just plain crazy to say that because some people cant see it, you shouldnt use it. Plain and simple, the pros outweigh the cons, unless you're a natural pessimist. Plus flash is just way cool man. Right 3nodding Why do 'entirely' flash websites have the HTML option?

Some designers prefer to have their services and/or portfolio displayed in a static form. There are many reasons to do this. One of which would be to capture audiences who do not have cable connections, which some flash-developed sites tend to take advantage of. Usually if a site has an "html" section, it means that the flash version is slightly larger.
On the other hand, you could put yourself in the shoes of the designer in that there are some differences of ability when it comes to designing a site. IE A flash version may do things that the html version doesnt, or the artist may warrant a different design entirely.
And then theres the possibility that the designer just WANTS to do things this way. I have fallen into this category numerous times,s and as a member of a large community of designers, I see this happen all the time.
Its basically all within the demeanor of the designer / developer.

OK, thanks for that. I personaly would love to learn flash, but then I haven't a clue where to start. I assome if they had forums it would go in a static sight as well, and other more advanced features.

thegr8flashy *snip*The random function allows the user to substantially limit the chance of loading a duplicate file from the cache, thus always providing a fresh version of the file, for all intensive purposes. Surely you could just use , or send Cache-Control:no-cache instead? This way it actually isn't cached, even if you do get the same random number, as well as it being the 'proper' way of doing things. And also, flash sites == evil. 1. Accessibility is shot. Good luck finding a screen reader that can handle flash content. People also seem to always forget to put in things like the option to increase text size in flash, something I can do with an HTML page. 2. Navigation. I like my back buttons, they exist for a reason. Oddly enough, I haven't come across many sites with a well enough planned design that implements the same functionality, right down to shortcut keys, in a flash site. 3. Size. Generally, a flash site is larger than a 'typical' site. Mainly in part due to issue number 4. 4. Give someone a flash design and the web developer turns into an idiot. Everyone seems to feel that because flash lets them embed music, flashy lights, and so on, that they should. 5. Almost always unnecessary. I'm trying to recall the last time I saw a flash site I couldn't have made without flash, but I'm not succeeding. 6. Requires additional software to use. Remember all the linux users in the forums who couldn't play the gaian games because flash 9 didn't exist on linux?
