Rachel just gritted her teeth, her eyes squeezed shut as she waited for the pain to pass. She was grateful for Thom's thoughtfulness, and probably would have been freaked out by the fact that he might have seen something, if all her concentration wasn't on the emerging tail.
After several moments, the tail stopped growing, and the pain was reduced to a lingering throb, leaving Rachel shaking and taking gasping breaths. Eventually, she sat up on her knees and reached for the corners of the blanket, more completely covering herself with the material, before turning to Thom, a pained expression on her face.
"What have they done to me?" she asked quietly, her voice cracking. "What animal looks like this?" She knew in a way, she was being selfish, because Thom and everyone else here had or would go through something similar, but all she could think about right now was what she had just gone though.

He was silent for the duration of the change, glancing back over only when he noticed her moving out of the corner of his eye. Her question was more than understandable, but he didn't have a response for it. He didn't have any idea what it might be. Had he gotten a glimpse at her tail, perhaps he could have wagered a guess, but as it was he doubted she would allow him such a look, nor did he particularly want to look. Before she had been frighteningly skinny, now...well, extremely obese was putting it lightly, but he wasn't quite sure how else to put it. Poor thing. "...I don't know what t' tell you, Rachel."

"There's no way I can fit into any of my clothes....I mean how can I go out in public like this?" She glanced at the doorway, which suddenly seemed very tiny. She had gotten bigger since she had rushed into the room before. Could she even fit though the door?
While she was thinking her stomach gave an audible growl, and the hunger that had consumed her before returned, though not quite as intense. The pain from her tail had overridden it for a short time, but no longer.
"How can I possibly still be hungry? I mean I a-" she cut herself off before finishing the sentence, not wanting to admit to Thom the "sin" she had commited by eating that entire box of energy bars, not realizing he already knew. "How will I ever do gymnastics again?"

"Th's labs'll send you some new clothes," he assured her, leaning back against the wall. He thought they would, anyway. They wouldn't make her run around the island naked, he was sure, especially not after a change like that. Thom was torn between relief for her because she still looked human save for the tail, and pity for her because she looked...nothing like herself.
Her stomach growled and, despite himself, Thom laughed, pleased at least that the threat had passed and she as mostly alright. "Changes always take a lot out of people. Y' body must've used up everythin' you've eaten in sustainin' you durin' th' change. It's probably a good thing you did eat a good bit, actually, else you might've 'ad problems." Pausing briefly, he shrugged, then cracked a smile. "It's mostly weight by th' looks of it, right? You can still exercise. Gymnastics might be a bit away, but that's not t' say it's gone forever."

"I guess...." Rachel said grudgingly, not having gotten past the idea of having dealings with the doctors of the labs. But they had gotten to her anyways, even though she had been doing her best to ignore and avoid them.
When he laughed, Rachel gave him a slight glare. She didn't see anything funny about her prediciment. All that she had long worked for, was gone, far beyond hope of regaining it. Her body was worse to her than she had ever imagined it could be...except in that one dream.
Rachel shuddered and shut her eyes against that thought. She didn't want to think about it, because if this part of her nightmare came true, what else would? Her expression turned from one of irritation to that of a lost child.
"I'm scared Thom...more than when I found out what was going on here..."

Following her glare he fell momentarily silent, sending her an apologetic shrug for having laughed. It was a laugh of relief that she wasn't, say, writhing on the ground in unspeakable agony, or dead from complications, or mad from the instincts of the animal. He hated witnessing transformations. They always made him squeamish and made him pity whoever was undergoing the change, despite how much he might dislike the person. It was harder still when he actually got along with the person. And yes, now Rachel was the size of about four Rachels, but there were certainly worse fates. ...Not, he thought, that he would have traded with her if given the choice.
"Remember when I talked to you at th' beach, an' I said 'ow it takes th' truth of the island a bit t' sink in?" He glanced back towards her, cracking a smile. "I think I'd honestly be more worried if you weren't scared. We're all scared. Y' just 'ave to learn t' live with that fear an' not let it rule your life." He was only being a tad hypocritical.

"Yeah..." Rachel said, not really sure she meant it. She suddenly moved to get to her feet, doing her best to keep the blanket wrapped around her body. Taking a deep breath, she turned and faced the mirror for the first time, not quite knowing what she would see. The vison that greeted her in the mirror was no one she recognized. It was like looking into the face of a stranger.
She was silent for a long while, but finally spoke, her voice catching. "I...just had a dream about something like this.... Before I even came here. The rest is worse, and if this part came true..." She shook her head, not venturing further. It was too much to think about.

As she rose to her feet, he retrieved his cane and did the same, though he remained off to the side while she examined herself in the mirror. He felt sorry for her, certainly, but that didn't stop the obvious skepticism from coming out in his voice at her remark. "What, like, predictin' th' future? It was probably just coincidence. Everyone 'as weird dreams from time to time."

Rachel Collison "I guess...but have you ever dreamed anything as freaky as this and then have it happen? I mean seriously....how many dreams have you had where you swell up like a hippo....or in your case grow a tail and the rest of it..." Even if it was just coincidence like Thom had said, she couldn't seem to get out of her head that the dream and her change were connected. Thomas Brinley "None that I can remember," he admitted, shrugging, though he wasn't entirely sure that was true. There was a nagging feeling at the back of his head that he had had such a dream, and fairly recently--but not before the island. Maybe near one of his changes? Ah well, it wasn't important. "An' it could've just been an effect of th' serum, right? Makin' you imagine things. There's no tellin' how it could end up... I wouldn't dwell on it." Rachel Collison Rachel sighed, wrapping the blanket tighter around herself. She still wasn't convinced, but she decided to let it pass. Maybe Thom was right? It could just be coincidence or her imagination. "I suppose..." Rachel made her way out of the bathroom, back into the bedroom. She frowned slightly as her stomach growled and she sat down on the bed. "Do...you think it'll get worse in the end?" she asked Thom, not able to drop the subject of her change just yet. "Or...do you think there'll be some of us left when they're done with us?" Thomas Brinley He stepped aside to let her pass, then followed behind with the aid of his cane, sinking back down to sit on the edge of the bed beside her. "It's hard to say..." Shrugging, he shook his head. "I've seen some islanders who could pass for animals if they chose t' walk on all fours, but they don't. They've held on to their humanity, they continue t' think an act as humans, and th' changes don't seem t' bother them much. An' then there are others..." He paused, glancing down to his own stump of a leg, and cracked a grin. "Well... I 'ave a long way to go before I'm a snake, I think, an' that terrifies me. I'd wager it depends on the animal. Some are easier to adapt to than others." Rachel Collison Rachel nodded, silently, offering Thom a small smile. "Well here's hoping we remain ourselves though all of it." Her eyes swept over the room as she thought, with no particular direction, but they ended up landing on the phone. Rachel shifted uncomfortably as she looked at it, knowing that now sooner, rather than later, she would have to call the labs and request their assistance. There was no way a single item of her pants or shirts would fit her. She didn't even think her shoes and socks would fit... Rachel glanced back at Thom. She was appiciating having company to help get through this, however, she didn't think she wanted him listening in on her call to the labs. It would be humiliating enough to make the call as it was. She wouldn't kick him out though, unless she got the impression he wanted to go. "Thom...thank you for staying here with me though this. It would have been so much harder on my own." Thomas Brinley "You're quite welcome," he assured her with a nod, but climbed back to stand, shifting his weight to the cane. "Is there anythin' I can get you? Painkillers, anythin' of the sort? You'll 'ave to ask th' labs for clothes..." He grimaced, then shook his head. "But if there's anythin' else, or if you need anythin' later on, just let me know." Rachel Collison "No...I don't think there's anything that I need right now. The only thing that really hurts is the tail...but it's dulled and it's mostly...," she paused, hesitating to say the last word, "...fat. "Thank you though Thom," she offered him a slight smile. Thomas Brinley "Anytime," he assured her, smiling. "'Owever, in that case, I should probably be goin'. You're sure you're alright? I feel bad leavin' after you've only just changed." Rachel Collison "I...should be fine," Rachel said not feeling quite as sure as she sounded. "You were here for the worst of it. Now I just need time to think...and procure certain items from the labs..."

((*hopes it's okay to post*)) Left outside your door is a small package, which appears to be a white trash bag and some red ribbon tied around it. Inside is a pink and white blanket and pillow, both made from the same soft fabric. You'll also find a few pieces of chocolate and hard fruit candy. There is also a note in the bag. Quote: Sorry for the lousy wrapping. I hope you are well. I'm not sure if you celebrate Christmas, but I wanted to give you something. Happy Holidays. -Lucas

After Thom left, Rachel nervously reached for the com unit and pressed '0' to dial the labs. There were a couple of rings before a male voice answered the line.
