Doug of Akkad My charcoal tip for the day: assuming you're using uncompressed stuff, use a rubber/plastic eraser alongside it. You can get so much depth that way. i have charcoal pencils, but i'm thinking that if i use up these pencils i'll get some vine charcoal. and...how do you use an eraser alone side it? for highlights, or smudging, or...?

Use uncompressed willow charcoal! It is the s**t. No smudging. Highlights, sort of. What I find myself doing with a rubber is layering: you can have an image and draw back into it with the eraser, then draw back into that with charcoal, and so on. This guy is my hero:

that is amazing.
i don't *like* smudging myself because it never looks quite how i'd like, but i find myself doing it (especially for skin) to try to get a smoother shade. i am trying to get away from this obsession with smooth shading, but it's harder than it sounds xd
thanks for the tips!

hm...so it seems that it's really a matter of opinion and/or preference.
the only reason i'm using pencils is because i wanted to try out charcoal and it was the least amount of money for the most about of charcoal. i've kind of found i don't really like the inconsistency of charcoal (these pencils, anyway). it just seems unpredictable. i've been kind of looking around at vine charcoal though. maybe when i get some cash and extra time, i'll give it a shot.
i remember a while back (a couple years), i burnt match sticks to draw/play with charcoal. that was fun mrgreen

Dirty_sox3 personally, i don't like uncompressed willow charcoal. i find vine charcoal to work out better for me. How does vine stuff compare? Never tried it, I just love how loose and fragile willow is.

vine charcoal is thinner (depending on what you get), softer, and has a different hue than willow. it goes on the paper smooth rather than.....not smooth (my mind is drawing a blank....) sweatdrop you really have to test it out for yourself.

I love using charcoal. I never ever smudge it...I use it like it's a pencil and I'm sketching in areas of shadow with it. I like to use it alongside chalk...just shade the highlights with chalk, the shadows with charcoal, and leave the rest up to the tone of the paper; I usually use a coloured paper when working with charcoal and chalk 3nodding

I've got a couple of charcoal pencils, but I'm not so fond of them. Too messy for my likings. xd
As for the recent update: I like the second picture a lot. The lacey look reminds me of a cake decorating technique I learned called zotas. Anyway, it looks really nice. biggrin

The stippling is s**t hot. Looks like an etching. You could run with that for a while.
The tree thing'd look ace if you developed a decent shorthand for the bulk of the leaves. I never like drawing trees because I really haven't...

I never like drawing trees because I really haven't... i love, love, love stippling (i know, i'm a masocist), but it's just so boring and/or takes forever. i like doing it (for a short period of time, or in my free time), but i hate how long it takes. that drawing is like 2X4 and took me like 2-3 hours. stupid tree. i've tried to draw trees and it just never works out. i have plenty of time to figure it out, though. thanks!
