Considering how xenophobic the vast majority of Japanese are.. I'd say it matters to them, yes. Maybe not quite as much as, say, ten years ago it would have, but my guess is that they do roll their eyes at us silly Westerners now and then about it. I've not heard stories of actual hostility, though, towards Western Lolitas vs. Japanese Lolitas. There probably are a few. There are always biases.

I don't see that it should matter, really. If it looks cute and feels right, go for it! I mean, it isn't like there hasn't been borrowing back and forth for the past few decades, anyway.

Hostility...wow. But i agree with you, race should not matter at all i am black and love lolita, i love to see people of all colors wearing lolita because everyone is at peace with each other. I think that anyone should be able to wear loita regardless of race, sex, etc. biggrin If people have a common intrest, love what they wear and think that race should not matter, then we are one step closer to ending racism.

I think it's impossible to completely eliminate racism, actually. Perhaps we can lessen it, and definitely try to eliminate overt racism. It's a horrible force, but it's also a heavily ingrained one. Adults pass it to their children, those children to their children, and so on.

We are inclined to be afraid of things that we don't understand. The world is too big and there are too many stereotypes being reinforced for people to completely understand one another..

I agree. Ending racism will probably not happen any time soon. and that fact hurts... but yes if people can lessen it, then that is better than nothing.

I always felt the issue isn't as much racism as it is just skin tone. Averagely pale skin is looker for in the style simply because that is what the style has most always called for. I'm an African-American as well, and I dress in Lolita every other Thursday/Friday, and only once have I been confronted about having dark-er skin and wearing Lolita, but it was positive. The girl said that she didn't know "black people could wear Lolita".

I told her I looked fabulous in it and I worked to put it together, so there is really no reason why I shouldn't wear it.

I think pale skin is beautiful in Lolita, especially if it's pampered well, but if the person cannot wear the style well, or in some way disrespects the way, they recieve more prejudice than someone of a different race.

It's open to many people but some people don't look good in some clothes but still wear it. I know what I don't look good in so i advoid it

I really don't think race should matter. I like Lolita's of all sorts. I'd really LOVE to see an African-American lolita.

Same here. I have friends that are Phillippino, Caucasion, and even Bi-racial butterflies like myself lace-trimmed head-to-toe. Race should never be a barrier for anyone to try to break through. I'm getting used to my skin. After being told I was ugly for having beautiful cinnamon(I dunno, lighter,maybe?)-colored skin and wavy/curly brown hair and that I was stupid for talking in 3rd person like a 3-year-old *just for fun! I'm famous for it!*, I thought of using that skin lightener stuff and changing my speech habits. But, I've come to realize that you've got to be comfortable to be a Lolita. How do you expect to come across as androgynistic or cute while wearing [BabySSB] or [Moi-Me-Me-Motie] if you can't even smile wearing your own skin? RASCISM MAKES ME SICK! EVERYONE NEEDS TO GET OVER THEIRSELVES AND REALIZE HOW STUPID IT IS TO BE QUICK TO JUDGE PEOPLE! RASCISTS DESERVE TO DIE IN MY EYES IF THEY CONTINUE TO SPREAD SUCH PUTRIDE BELIEFS THAT A LOLITA HAS TO HAVE PALE SKIN OR HAS TO BE REALLY THIN. I respect all skin types and body shapes and I think people deserve to feel beautiful as a Lolita if that's what they truly desire.

As long as it looks good I think race doesn't matter, but in my humble opinion there are no human "races" wink

From what I've heard, they're more concerned if you're wearing brand, but I've heard the Japanese population as a whole generally doesn't like any sort of foreigner.

And another thing I've heard was some Japanese actually think it looks BETTER on white girls *european or not* because it looks more natural.
*other races, I haven't heard anything*

Well, it depends. I'm sure they don't like the cosplaying lolita that are wearing the fashion because their favorite anime character is, or the people who worship every aspect of Japan for whatever reason...since that is a little odd.

I'm a Japanese mix so...from what I hear mixes aren't liked by most people there. XD

since I'm not japanese, I don't know what they would think about "white" people wearing loli clothes.
If japanese peple are like people from Taiwan, then they'll be excited about people from other countries wearing their fashion. (People in Taiwan love foreigners)

And having white skin is part of the loli fashion right?
Also in ALL parts of asia, having pale skin is something that others will admire

Naw, Japanese are known for not liking any other asian countries. razz Um, they have more racism there than Taiwan I'm sure...they just usually don't say anything to your face.

While I don't think race matters at all, unfortunately it does to many other people. Some japanese lolitas may discriminate against someone for their skin color, but I don't think that would reflect what the rest of them think.

The one thing that angers me the most is when people from a certain race actually encourage stereotypes of themselves. I had a friend who was very nice, intelligent and a little bit geeky, but his parents were always telling him "You should act more black" and "You should dress more like a black guy". I can't figure out why anyone would want to encourage their own children to fit into a racial stereotype.

I would hope Race doesnt matter...it doesnt to me...

I wold like to move to Japan one day...and open my own Lolita Clothing store...but i am not sure how they would feel about that...they might be fine with people who are not Japanese WEARING Lolita...but how would they feel about an American coming to their Country and selling clothing in a style they made popular?...I would hate to be shunned by everyone for opening a buisness...>.>
