Syd Barrett
I don't like him simply because the Angel of Music is supposed to be able to sing. sweatdrop

Not to mention that in 2004 John Owen Jones was playing as the Phantom in London... he would have been such a perfect choice for the movie. crying
Go to www.youtube.com and search for his videos to see what I mean.
I practically swoon everytime I hear John Owen-Jones sing "Music of the Night."
Quote:
1. yes he did have little singing opportunities before Phantom, but I dont think he did a bad job, it rather fit with the phantoms character, granted he is definitely nothing like Michael crawford

NO. Erik is supposed to be able seduce people with his voice. His voice is supposed to be the epitome of perfect music, hence why Christine thinks that he is an Angel. It's not Gerry's fault he's inexperienced, but his voice does not fit Erik's character- unless Erik was a rock and roll sex god, which he isn't.

Quote:
2.He has to act that way in order to play the part of the almighty phantom

Act arrogant? Granted, Erik has his moments of arrogance, but not throughout the entire story. Erik is ultimately human: he does not act almighty every freaking second.

Quote:
3. cocky smile=he knows something everyone else (Christine) did not

I agree with Fox here. And it's not so much a smile as in a smirk that makes you want to punch his pretty teeth out. It's kind of like his smirk in Dracula 2000.

I could never bring myself to dislike Gerry. He's just too sweet and adorable and I love him to pieces.

I can, however, hold a deep grudge against ALW and Schumacher. The film is a great story on it's own but it's just not Phantom.

Couldn't have put it better myself.

I agree 100% with you. The 2004 version of POTO is an over-sexed teenybopper version of the musical, which is still an over-sexed version of the book that leaves dozens of dreaded plotholes. >>;

I don't know that I'd call him "sweet" and "adorable". He's way too much of a cocky stud for that.

Now, Winslow on the other hand....

*Ahem*

I find I can't hate him, why? He was the first I saw

Same here.

It isn't his fault. It is the director's (I can never spell his name...) fault making it sexy and the Phantom hardly had a deformity.

hm... it technically would be Joel Shumacher's fault. I saw what they originally had in mind for the Phantom's facial deformity, and it looked WAY better than the one they used in the movie. I wondered why they changed it.

It said on the offical show site that they wanted to get the tender side of Erik...
and it worked, the only reason I don't like Gerry is because his voice is not very skilled.
But you have to admit it holds a lot of emotion.

Why don't I like Gerard Butler? I can't really name one thing that puts me off entirely. It's more an assortment of little things that just grind my nerves...

We do not like his voice so rough
We do not like his chest so buff
We do not like the way he prances
We do not like his spandex pantses
We do not like his poofy shirt
And how we hates that stupid smirk!

We do not like his shiny hair
We do not like lack his lack of flair
Or how he throws around his cape
(Hey, Gerry! Take a clue from Snape!)
We do not like him here nor there
We do not like him anywhere

We do not like the Scottish man
That's why we second Uta-san

Lord of the Rings and Dr. Seuss are bad for me... *cough*

Be that as it may... I think Gerry was really a huge part of my Phandom. Seeing how I really couldn't care less about PotO on January second, 5:00 pm, he and his supreme hotness and singing voice brought me in, hook, line, and sinker. THEN I started accepting the fact that Erik is supposed to be butt-ugly (Sorry, Erik. It's true.) and I, too, have a complaint about Gerry.
He's too frickin' sexy to be Erik.
But I forgive him. I think if he was a good Erik, I wouldn't be here today.
Nor would I have such a fondness for music, the fine arts... I'd think Opera was still for pansies...
So yeah
Just my bit, there.

^ pretty much sums it all up.

Wow....that's good...but I mean Gerry is a good singer and yes they made him a little too attractive but...if he wasn't attractive how would Christine have fallen in love with him...that's the whole point of the movie!!! Well...he is supposed to be ugly...in a way but it doesn't mean that he can't look good and have only a part of his face deformed...

I personaly think that his voice fit the part because Erik is supposed to have a sexy, on the right side of danger type of voice...does anyone agree with me??

That was the point. She was NOT supposed to fall in love with him. ALW screwed up his own musical by doing that. Christine is supposed to pity him, not love him. She loves Raoul.

1. His singing is bad. It lacks depth and emotion.
2. As the Phantom he portrays the seducing part of the character too strongly, not the threatening or empathetic part.
3. I do not like his acting in general. From what I have seen, even in othe rmovies, he only plays one personna and that is all he does regardless of what is called for in a character. He also didn't do his own stunts, considering that all there was was a corny swordfight he hasn't much of an excuse.

I personally see the movie, musical, and novel Erik as three totally different Eriks. Playing the movie version, I think Gerry did a really great job. Sure he wasn't a true angel of music but he did his best and that's all that matters. He only acts so damn sexy because it makes girls like me go crazy for him whee

However, as much as I love Gerik I still worship Leroux, Kay, and ALW's book and stage versions and remember that Erik was no sex god with a Scottish accent.
