I quit reading them after the Ancestor Cell arc. That was really dumb. I was just buying Past Doctor books...& then they stopped putting them out! scream

Tell me about it - annoying much?

Although, to be fair, the Beeb did release so many that you could spend most of your life trawling through secondhand shops, charity shops and eBay to pick them all up.

I've a friend who's always been into Doctor Who. He has all the BBC books (at least up to Doctor no. cool and all of the New Adventures, including Dying Days and Lungbarrow (he got them as soon as they came out, curse him!) and I think he has Cold Fusion too.

I really need to ask to borrow the latter...

Which Doctor was the Ancestor Cell? I'm afraid I've only read the 7th and a few of the 8th. Oh, I also took a chance on Winner Takes All & *checks* The Clockwork Man (9th Doctor) from a charity shop. I rather liked them, so I'll probably pick up a few more as I go - although I won't be actively looking for them.

Ancestor Cell was #8.
I only sporadically got books in the (then) current Doctor series after that, & when I heard what they did in that Henrietta Avenue book (that's part of the title) I just gave it up completely.
I'm still missing the 6th Doctor novel Kate Orman wrote, & since I really like her books I'm very annoyed the bookstores didn't order it. They just kept ordering the #8 books which sat untouched on the shelves. DUH!
I had to special order Spiral Scratch to read it.

i have read not that many books but i have read the first 5 books in the begining starting with the unearthy child. 3nodding and i like to note how much The Doctors personality changed since then.

Yeah but then the time that the shows were made were very different too and when the books were written 3nodding

ya well almost everything adapted from or to book as always diffrent then the original...otherwise who would reada book when they could get a script. ands the doctor also acted diffrent in the book then in the show especially when he tryed to kill the........ dotn want to releave anymore info may upset people biggrin

The novels are not really "canon", though, not even the old Target Books written in the 1980's . Often the authorsd made up little details when they found aomething that didn't make sense to them, and some people have since adopted these as "canon". But the rule of thumb has always been: If it is shown on TV, then it happened. if it is in a book or a fanzine, it is just outside speculation. Obviously, though, each of us will read a book or fanzine and say to ourselves, "yeah, that was cool! That story ought to be part of the canon." And so, in our own imaginations, it becomes our personsonal canon. I know of several stories like that.

There were too many. I have a number of the old Target books, and a friend read all her newer books (about 2 dozen, at least 2 or 3 per Doctor), didn't like them and didn't intend to re-read them, and so she mailed them to me. I have only read a few of them, and to be honest I only enjoyed a handful of them. There was a good 1st Doctor book and a good 6th Doctor book, and an interesting (though not great) 4th Doctor book, and a dismal 5th Doctor book (Not surprisingly; the 5th Doctor is my least favorite, anyway), and never got beyond that because our house is being remodeled, and all - and I do mean all - of our books are piled in a multi-tiered mountain that reaches the ceiling on one whole side of the room.

The only 6th Doctor book I read was the one where he landed in aworld where ancient Rome was preserved in some kind of a time/space bubble, and some of the history had been changed. I read it a long time ago, so forgive me if i have the details a little mixed up.

I've only read Nightshade on the BBC wedsite, which I throughly enjoyed until I came up to the ending. For the love of god what happened to the ending??? Its no bloody sense! I re-read it three times and STILL don't know wtf happened. Which pisses me off even more because the rest of he book was really good, much better than I had expected.

How are the other books? I keep hearing about weird things that ae only mentioned in the books, like breeding looms or something? Also, how would i go about getting these books? I live in Canada and all I've seen of them is a 5th doctor book at a rummage sale, and i wasn't fan then... sad

Here are some online sources:
Doctor Who Store (This one's in the US)
The Comic Web (This one doesn't sell them itself but links you to Amazon. It does, however, sort & list all the books right there.)

I would also look for comic shops that carry used books, used book stores in general, and Science Fiction bookstores. A good, old bookstore that has been around for ages can have quite a pile of old Target novels, for instance. There's one down in Chapel Hill, NC on Franklin St. that is awesome for all kinds of old books! (Which brings up the point that bookstores near big universities can be good sources!)

Well, I've made it my mission to collect them all (New Adventures that is). Some are much better than others. All can be pretty violent compared to the TV series, although some are much worse than others - Russell T Davies' Damaged Goods, I'm looking at *you*!

eBay is where I'm picking them up. There were a few for sale last week that were located in Canada, so they can't be too hard to find. I was lucky enough that a friend of mine found about 14 in a secondhand bookshop in Worcester; then I found about 6 more in a shop in Leicester; then the same friend found some more in Worcester. As I say, the rest were eBay.

I'm down to about 10 to go now. If you want to know about looms, check out Lungbarrow on the BBC website - unless you wish to spend around £40 picking up a paper copy smile

Dying Days is also well worth reading on that site. In fact, they're pretty much all worth taking a look at.

The Doctor Magazines did a story like that, but it was the 4th Doctor and a teenage girl in her school uniform. The penguin companion was a shape-shifter who accompanied the 6th Doctor in the comic-magfazine universe--which was believe it or not, associated with Marvel Comics!

Ancestor Cell was #8.

Ancestor Cell is supposed to be a sort of "compainion" to The Burning, Faction Paradox, and Turing Test.

I'm reading the 7th Doctor book "Bullet Time." Sarah Jane Smith is in this as well.

This is one of those "too many stories going on in one book" type novel. Geez, thank you David McIntee for killing off some of these people to thin the cast out!

This book has stolen hours of my existence. scream I think I will pull a Henry Rollins and eat it. wink
