An aromatherapy oil burner. smile Mum's got a book on it somewhere, I think... I think it may be tricky to make the oils from scratch...

Mom used to do aromatherapy... Then she got tired of it. I use Lavender oil when I can't sleep... Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. confused It does calm down my ratties though, they make a lot less noise when I light the burner thingie.
Lavender pouches in wardrobes make the clothes smell pretty and keep the moths away. blaugh
I haven't tried making oils yet and I've only seen one in the making. Marigold oil smile But I think I already posted about that somewhere. I think it was in the Teas topic.

Mmm, I think it might have been. I'm uncertain if you can make oils by soaking the herbs in existing oil for a long time or not, but to make essential oils, I think you need some pretty hardcore equipment + Hardcore quantities of the herb o_o; (just going by memory from what I read in mum's book)
I llike aromatherapy - much as I like how incense smoke looks, you get a much cleaner smell with aromatherapy than incense - but buying the oils is so expensive! gonk

Essential oils do indeed take specialist equipment and a long time to make, it is best to buy them.
You can burn them in an oil burner which is a small stand with a sort of dish on top that you put water and the oil in. You place a lighted candle below so that the water heats and evaporates taking the mixed water and oil with it. It's a good alternative to incense as it's not smokey but still smells strong.
Using oils to annoint is also really easy, I often annoint candles for spell work by rubbing a small amount of essential oil to the outside of a candle (just don't get the oil too near the wick), as the candle burns the smell of the oil will evaporate into the air. It also makes the candle sticky so you can then roll it in dried herbs and stuff too.

Around here they cost around 750 sit. ... Which, to my dislike, will soon be something around 3€.
Considering the bottle isn't even full, it IS a little expensive... Bur maybe I use it too much and it should last longer razz

It depends on what oil it is and where you get it from. A lot of health shops sell them but you are looking at paying more for a more limited selection than you would if you went to an occult supplier. And of course rarer oils cost a hell of a lot more than the standard ones like lavender. Generally your looking at from around £3 - £4+ (British Pounds), but they do last a long time. My dark patchouli oil cost me about £3.85 from a local magick shop, and I have had it for years. Oils like lavender and eucalyptus I use more regularly so I invest in bigger bottles.
You can try to make the oils last longer by mixing them with a base oil like almond or sunflower, which are much cheaper. Pick something with little or no scent and it won't detract from the smell of the oil (and remember peeps, if your using the oils on your body than you will need to dilute them in a base oil first).

Actually I use the oils on an oil burner, one of those things where you place a candle underneath and oil on top so it evaporises. I usually mix 3 or so drops of oil with a lot of water, but it lasts me only around 6 months. It is true however, that I use Lavender on a daily basis. I am a bit insomniac and have big problems sleeping and Lavender seems to help with that. Lime, I use weekly, 3 or 4 times, for studying. It helps with my concentration. Those are the only 2 oils I own.
I'll try mixing them with sunflower oil, we use that for cooking at home.
You can get them here at a number of places, herbal shops, health stores, but I get mine from an Indian (Asia, not American Indian) store here because it is cheapest there. I don't think there actually is an occult shop in existance in my country. Several "spiritual" ones though.

we're the same with the occult store thing... there may be about 2. All in places that are hard for me and Jess to get to.
Recently the herb garden has been taking a battering from the wind, so we put up (well, we got Jess' dad to put up) a wind break... Long story why, but now it's on an angle and crushing some of the bigger plants (we had to chop of about half of the corriander (I'm sure I spelt that wrong) yesterday because it fell over under it's own weight... It looks really butchered, because I ended up doing the trim-job... I feel sorry for the poor little thing... Had to trim back the fennel and dill, too. They werent too out of hand... Ah well... We'll have to do something about the wind break eventually, though... I just dont knw what we can do at the moment.
