The raccoon easily evaded Baptiste's flailing grab and then sat complacently on top of the box holding the instruments, all the while holding on to the string of beads. She cocked her masked face up to evaluate him curiously, almost daring him to try and catch her again.

Tamlin heard Baptiste's exclamation from outside and startled enough to drop the tea kettle; luckily it it wasn't very full. A raccoon! there shouldn't have been any way for one to get into the wagon. It must have snuck in while they had been cleaning.

Ignoring the tea kettle Tamlin hurried inside the wagon to see what exactly was going on. It took a moment for her find the small creature in the wagon, but sure enough as Baptiste had said there was definitely a raccoon in their wagon. She turned to Baptiste, "So, now what?"

The raccoon broke her gaze on the man who had tried to catch her, he had nothing to hold her interest for now. She re-focused her attention on the young woman who had just entered. This new person held great interest for her. After looking her over the Raccoon gracefully climbed down from the box and softly padded over to the woman, looked up at her and churred in a low pitched sweet voice then sat down on top of Tamlin's feet.

Baptiste goes for the raccoon again but it jumps down and sits on Tamlin's feet. "What in the seven hells is that doing in here?" he asks, folding his arms and looking witheringly at it. "Evidently it wants you to keep it. Or feed it. Or something. And it's got some of your beads, look."

"Apparently" Tamlin stated rather in confusion. She had rushed in expecting to help chase out a mangy creature trying to steal food. Certainly not this, a little bit scruffy but adorable and well composed animal. "ummm..." Tamlin thought for a moment, her dad had always told her never to feed an animal you didn't want coming back. Looking down at the small furry thing at her feet she felt certain the raccoon hadn't come here just for food. "I guess we should feed it then. Can you go get it a little something? I want to see if I can get the beads back."

Tamlin knelt down in front of the raccoon and cautiously began to reach for the beads it held in its paws.

As the woman knelt down the raccoon stood up on its hind legs and gazed into her face. instead of letting the woman reach for the beads, she preempted the motion and climbed into the woman's arms.

Tamlin was so startled she couldn't even react when the furry creature rose up and stared at her. the raccoons face was so serious, but the fluffy disheveled fur completely ruined the facade; it was too cute. She broke into a grin and while kneeling comfortably on the wagon floor began stroking the raccoon trying futilely to coax the fur into lying flat.

"...Tamlin....are you planning on keeping it as a pet? It belongs in the forest, God alone knows how the poor creature got over to this island. You already have two birds and a horse, remember." Baptiste has to admit, though, it's an adorable little thing.

Tamlin barely heard Baptiste's words as she sat petting the animal "hmm... oh no... it's not a pet." then she considered his comment further "your right, the island is rather small." she then addressed the raccoon sitting comfortably on her lap "how did you get here anyway hmm? you seem rather used to people for a wild animal. " Tamlin looked at the beads held in its small paws "although I see your propensity for small shiny things is unchanged from the natural habits." Tamlin cooed at the adorable animal for a while, wondering how on earth it had ended up in their wagon.

Turning back to Baptiste "well, we can feed it and see what it does next. perhaps it just wants a ride off the island"

"That's absurd, how would a raccoon know that a wagon meant an exit off of the island? And moreover, how on earth did it get in here? It would have made an awful racket if it had come through the door or window." He moves a few things on the bed over and sits on it.

the raccoon turned towards Baptiste and gave him a scathing look. this man clearly underestimated everyone else's intelligence, of course things with wheels go places.

Tamlin noticed her little furry bundle's look and laughed "she seems to not like you very much Baptiste. perhaps she came in when I was moving things outside to organize the wagon, i may have left the door open. Raccoons are clever little creatures." she gave an adoring look at the one on her lap and then skritched the top of it's head.

This one, she looked up at the woman holding her, was much better at listening to animals.

Seeing the 'coon relax in her arms a little she called over to Baptiste, "pass me over the bag on the bed, i want to put these beads away so i dont lose them."

Baptiste nods and looks around him. "What bag? There's nothing up here but me." He stands up to make sure he hadn't been sitting on it. "Nope. Did you maybe put it somewhere else?"

Macquieth gazed out the window, perched awkwardly on the ledge. He had been preening when the wind brought him the familiar pulling, and he looked up and spoke out clear.

Nowhere on earth is safe,
Death comes to all those who claim life.
You may not be safe,
if you can't cling to what is at stake.

Hyas, was new to the wagon and hadn't had much time to get used to his new surroundings before the meij winds called to him. Being a young bird he listened for some time before repeating what he had pulled from the stream.

Fortunes go both ways,
for all people.

Your good fortune is short with it's life,
your bad will last a lifetime.

"what? no,the bag should be there, I haven't touched it since" Tamlin said confused. She lightly set the raccoon down on the floor, stood up, and wandered over to the bed to search herself. only to find nothing, just as Baptiste had said. "where could it have gone? maybe when the 'coon took the beads it fell somewhere" She said as she knelt down and began searching under the bed and anything the bag could have fallen under. but the result was the same, the bag had disappeared. puzzled, she eyed the raccoon "where did you put that bag?"

Looking up at the two humans, she gave them a look of complete innocence. *what bag? bags are not interesting why bother with them?* she thought and then returned to amusing herself with the shiny beads she held.

Suddenly a chill ran through the wagon and without warning Macquieth uttered his first prophecy, a dark message with a warning.
Nowhere on earth is safe,
Death comes to all those who claim life.
You may not be safe,
if you can't cling to what is at stake.

without pause Hyas followed Macquieth's prophecy with his own and called out a reminder on the fickleness of fortune
Fortunes go both ways,
for all people.

Your good fortune is short with it's life,
your bad will last a lifetime.

The feeling of the Meij was nothing new to her, she merely perked her ears to listen to it speak its message through the birds.

A bit shaken by the ill tidings ushered in by the Meij, Tamlin turned to Baptiste "I've never experienced this before. you?" Her forehead creased in worry and thought, the fortunes were clearly foretold nothing desirable, but, what about that warning? *cling to what is at stake* Tamlin could think of nothing at stake currently.

The depth of the Meij had left the wagon once the birds had finished delivering their prophecies, but vestiges remained. "The meij seems strong today" Tamlin said to no one in particular and then had a sudden thought. "the bag! Val said in her note that i should use it, but not expect its contents back! what if she meant the bag as well? if the Meij were involved then... such items are certainly not uncommon here" Tamlin spoke hurriedly, her thoughts going faster and she was certain she was right. "where did you come from and how did you get in here hmm? Did the Meij bring you here?" She asked the raccoon who was clearly unphased by dire messages just brought.

Ah, so you can think. of course that's why I'm here. the raccoon thought amused by the antics of the woman, but also pleased she had figured it out. she was much smarter then the man. the raccoon lightly padded over the the woman and dropped the beads back on her lap and gave a churring reply of satisfaction

"Wait," says Baptiste, his head spinning from all of this magic. "You mean that thing just...materialized? Or that your sack turned into this creature?" He regards the raccoon rather...dubiously.

"I think I'm just going to ignore that the birds just talked," he resolves, and goes back to cleaning. The Meij is not a new concept to him, but he'd never been so...surrounded by it. His original caravan had been traders and merchants. They sold goods. Sometimes they sold magical goods, but for whatever reason the magic never affected them. They were simply agents. Talking birds and sacks that turned into pest animals were...slightly beyond him.

It's late autumn now, and Baptiste is still sleeping under the wagon at night. He'd actually taken to sleeping with the horses for warmth, but he would like to sleep in the wagon again. He brushes moss from his shirt and checks himself over, making sure he appears clean and neat. He washes his face and hands in the water bucket and dries off with Jolie's blanket. He puts on a cap and straightens it jauntily. Breathing deeply, he knocks on the wagon door.

Tamlin was lounging around reading a book before bed. Hearing her water boil signaling the tea was ready she set the book aside and stood up to ready her evening tea. She was in her night clothes, a white knee length sleeveless dress over white cotton pants. it was all edged with a thin blue lace. As it was getting colder she was also wearing a warm brown woolen robe.

In the middle of pouring her tea she heard the knock on the door. I wonder who that could be at this hour, Baptiste usually turns anyone away this late. She set down the tea and hurried to the door to open it.

"Hello? who is..." She paused seeing Baptiste's familiar outline " Since when do you knock Baptiste? it's your wagon isn't it? did you forget something?"
