Soco looked appropriately started at this request, wondering where it had come from. "Why would I hit you?" he asked.

Kiki gestured with one of her hands, idlely, kicking her legs, which didn't reach the ground from where she sat.
"You're more like a friend to me, I like you, but you're a teacher, too. You're a piano teacher when we're at the piano. And piano teachers hit you if you don't play right." Kilayla was slightly irritated that she had to explain this to Soco. He was the teacher, after all.
"And, I don't know any music, especially like the people on the music channel so..." Kiki pressed her lips together, and looked down. She then looked back to Soco, and there was no fear or apprehension on her face when she said again, "please don't hit me." It was almost as if she was asking about the weather.

Soco frowned slightly as he listened to Kiki explain her reasoning. He waited until she had finished -- until she repeated her first request -- before he said anything. "I'm not going to hit you," he said, his tone serious. "Not all teachers hit their students, and I'm certainly not someone who hurts others for their mistakes."
He sauntered over and slid onto the piano bench beside her. "Besides, this wasn't meant to be a real lesson," he continued, voice gaining back some of its softness. "This is just for fun. You can just press keys to your heart's content."

{{omg, i'm sorry if this post is all moody...i sorta' am right now...}}
Kilayla gazed at Soco and pondered at the tone he'd taken. Theif didn't use a voice like that when he was talking to her, usually. The bird-lady had, though. But, then, he came and sat next to her, and his voice sounded friendly again. Somewhere in the back of her head, she thought, maybe i can be like him when i grow up.
A sigh escaped her lips, and Kiki wondered when it was she'd tilted her head to the side, because she certainly didn't remember doing it. Her hair was tickling her ear, so she pushed it back. She realzed that her hair-tie was gone. Ah, well.
After a few more seconds, Kilayla found that she hadn't said anything in response to Soco; that she'd only been staring at him silently. Theif had told her that staring like this was impolite, so she looked over to the keys of the piano. How pretty they were.
She began an attempt to pluck out the song that the pale, pretty girl had played in the movie. She didn't know what it was called, but it made her feel excited for some reason. It made her want to get up and dance all around the room, but quietly. She tried to explain this to Soco.
"This is a song that Claudia played. She got really good after her piano teacher fell asleep on the piano, and Lestat came and showed her. Then, they went to somebody else's house--they had two little kids--and Claudia played this song for them. She played it after Lestat said, 'Now, try something on a more...somber note.' I'm not really that sure what 'somber' means, but the song was really pretty and different..." Kiki had been striking random keys as she spoke until she heard the ones that matched the song from the movie. After a few tries, she got the first eight bars.
Kiki looked up at Soco as he sat beside her, and her eyes were dreamy and vacant. She began playing the same eight bars again and again.

Even as Kilayla stared at him, Soco stared back, not feeling at all uncomfortable under her gaze. Strange, yes, but it was clear to him that she was momentarily lost in thought.
He watched as she started picking out a song by ear. It wasn't one he recognized, but when she mentioned Claudia and Lestat he figured that it was from a movie version of a book he'd once read. He wasn't much of a movie person, usually, but he'd have to see if this one was as good as the novel.
"Somber," Soco said, "usually means something serious, sometimes dark and gloomy. But even somber music can be quite beautiful."
He watched and listened as Kiki continued repeating the bars she knew. "You play by ear?"

So that's what somber meant. It seemed to fit right.
Kiki blinked up at Soco at his question, then giggled, letting her fingers fall from the piano keys. "I can't play with my ears, silly rabbit!"

Soco laughed, again. "That's not what I meant," he said, still giggling. "When you play by ear, you pick out the notes as you hear them, and then try and put them together with a song you've heard before."

"Ooh," Kiki giggled back. She nodded, and thought carefully about what Soco said. "Yes, then. I guess that's what I do..."

Soco nodded, smiling. "That's cool. I play music that way, too, when I don't have the notes in front of me."
Seeing as how Kiki had paused in her song, he put his long, elegant fingers over the keys. He looked up and half-closed his eyes as he remembered the fingerings for one melody in particular.
"Do you play video games?" he asked as he started to play a few bars of the song.

Kilayla watched Soco thoughtuflly. He looked like he should play piano, she decided. It just seemed right.
Smiling back, she tried to memorize the keys he touched for later, and responded to his question. "No, but it looks fun, from the comercials."

"Ah, then you wouldn't recognize this song, then," Soco murmured, continuing to play. "But I suppose it's just as well; video games can be addicting, and then your brain turns to mush."

"I've heard that song on t.v. before," Kiki replied. She grinned big, and tilted her head to the side, still looking up to her new friend. "Hey, Soco. Is your brain mush?"

"Ohh, okay." Soco continued playing until Kiki asked her next question. At that, he put all his fingers down, creating a rather dissonant chord. He gave her a lop-sided smile. "Only a little bit," he replied. "I read plenty of books, so that helps to correct the brain-mush, you see."

"Oooh," Kiki said, and laughed. She didn't know why in particular, just that she was happy.
"You know what I want to learn? I want to learn things like in the music that Theify listens to." She began to pluck at the keys again, and eventually came to the begining strains of a song called Silver and Cold. She then shook her head and giggled.
"And, I want to play stuff that nobody ever heard." Kilayla began to smash loudly on random keys this time, laughing all the while.

Soco laughed and started hitting keys along with her. The sound grew and grew, echoing through the halls.
It wasn't any surprise that it caught the attention of a few of the residents. One in particular peeked into the room and said, "Heeeyyy~ go easy on that thing!"
Soco stopped, but he was still grinning. "Sorry, Adrian, I guess we just got carried away."
