Jamie gasped in delight.
"Wow! That's it Chiyo, your getting there. So, you were talking 'bout fishies?" she said, making a little swimming motion with her hands, which was rather difficult as Chiyo was still in her arms.
"Now, try and show me what you mean about the fishies ... is it about examining the rock pools?"

Examining? What did that word mean? Nonetheless, she nodded and smiled happily. Then, sticking her fingers together to represent a group, she questioned again.

Jamie wrinkled up her nose, thinking hard again.
"A group of fishies? A group of .. monkeys? A spider with lots of legs?" she asked, staring at the little cluster of fingers.

Chiyo nodded madly as she passed over "monkeys" then shook her head when she went to "spider." "M..Mok.." she mumbled, then made the fishie motion again. "Fi...mo..." she wanted to cry. She just couldn't say it.

"A group of monkeys! You don't want to be in a group of monkeys when looking at fishies!" Jamie beamed. Chiyo had done it.
She saw the slight frustration in the childs face, and hugged her close.
"It's ok Chiyo, you're getting so much better! I got it in the end, so you must be good." she said, trying to make the little girl feel better.

Chiyo buried her face into Jamie's chest, calming. She nodded. She hated to admit, but she didn't want to be in a group. When she was an infant, things were much different. Not very many of them could speak well anyway, and she was a bouncy, smiley, just quiet baby girl. But now, when they could all talk and she couldn't, she had shrunk back, and avoided groups when she could.

Jamie leaned her her head on Chiyo's skull, gently to comfort her. She finally pulled the monkey's head back, and looked into her eyes smiling.
"It doesn't matter if you can't speak yet, Chiyo. Everyone learns at a different rate. I mean, Tou still can't swim, and her friend Di learnt how to when he was just an infant! But that doesn't bother Tou because she is special in her own way. Just like you."

After staring at Jamie for a few moments Chiyo looked down with a smile. Mabey Jamie was right...? Just the thought made her spirits lift.
Then she remembered Tou's name. She'd said it again, and she was becoming curious. "...T-...?" she asked, pointing to various monkeys in the group. Any one of them could be Toulouze.

Jamie giggled. "You mean Tou?" she said, pointing to the purple monkey huddled up with another breadstick.
Tou was completely unaware of this, and sat concentrating on the breadstick, making sure she didn't drop a single crumb.

She nodded and stared at Tou. Not rudely, staring was just her way of studying things, figuring out what they were. She liked her color, and absently wondered where she'd gotten her flower crown. So that was Jamie's monkey...

[Back in around 15 minutes, shower time =3]
Jamie giggled, watching Chiyo staring at Tou. She was about to gather everyone in the car, but had to do a few things first.
"Chiyo, I've got to set a few things up. You can either stay with me, or go and sit with Tou for a little while. Either way, it doesn't matter."
She rummaged in the boot AGAIN, producing a breadstick. She pointed it at the child, not sure if she'd want it or not.

Chiyo stared at the breadstick. Slowly she took it and nibbled a corner. It tasted like a sandwhich! She grinned and hopped to the ground. Cautiously she began to inch towards Toulouze, taking backwards glances at Jamie now and then.
