Same here, I have my old plastic clarinet for marching, and my nice, pretty wood one for everything else.
Probably the worst thing about Marching Band is that theres a part of our field show where I have to cross through two tubas: My friend Nicholas, and my ex boyfriend Jon. Now, they both have NO problem with trying to smoosh me, and I had to get my older, more intimidating friend to make them stop. . .which was fun. biggrin
*shifty eyes* Tubas would never do such a thing... whee

Right now, I'm playing on an R-13 with a Concert Jewel mouthpiece. And contrary to popular belief on this forum, the mouthpiece affects your tone more than the clarinet, so it's better to have a good mouthpiece than a wooden clarinet.

Anyways, I'm a high school graduate, I've played for 8 years, and I'm currently working on some solos to audition for music schools. Some pretty standard stuff, like Rabaud's Solo de Concours and Stravinsky's Three Pieces.

And by the way, you probably shouldn't strive to be the loudest clarinet player. That completely defeats the purpose of playing in an ensemble. Plus, the clarinet isn't really made to be a loud instrument.

::jumps all enthusastically like a chibi japanese schoolgirl on speed:: Hi.

I play the clarinet, obviously. Bb for 8 years, alto for one year. I dislike the alto clarinet. It's heavy and there is no stand-rest-y thing, like on bass clarients. This makes me sad. Uhm.. i'm a junior in the dreaded high school.

Anyone march in CA? Going to WBA? I'll wear a sign that says "Gaia = heart " if there are. Because I can, fools.

I am also a clarientist! (Duh!) But my clarinet is seriously crap. I'm a freshman at Maria Carrillo High School and I'm not in Symphonic Band ( crying ) for which you need to try out for. Honestly I was a bit intimidated because our music teacher is kinda of a jerk, but oh well. He's cool when you get to know him.

I LOVE BAND CAMP. My friends and I have band camp jokes. Kinda weird, I know, but it cracks us up so bad! biggrin I swear.

Right now we're playing this freakin' hard piece (only the last bar though) called "Celtic Dance" or something like that. The last bar is a very, VERY big trill with a run up the scale in the middle of it. Ack. xp

My friend and I debate about which is the best, oboe or clarinet. Clarinet wins by such a big margin! I don't know what my friend is thinking...she's just being stupid cause we all know clarinets are the best. (Though I'd like for her to teach me oboe. I heard it was really hard though. Oh, well! I'm up for a challenge!)

Yes, I've been rambling, but that's how I am. Which reminds me, I need to practice. Ciao!

o_o The oboe is freaking hard, yo. I walked in to my band class the first day((two days ago)), and my director was like "Oh, by the way, you're playing oboe." I was like WTF. I suck so bad at the oboe. Makes me dizzy @_@

That's another good thing about my band program; despite being strapped for cash, they provided us with some excellent mouthpieces and ligatures. We have to pay for them if we want to keep them, but we get to use them throughout high school.

True, true. I'm not trying to be excessively loud in symphonic band, because you're right, there's no point. But out on the marching field, we need all the volume we can get. It is a rare and joyous day when the director tells the flutes and clarinets, "You're playing too loud; back off."

The Alto doesn't have a floor peg? I always thought it did...Maybe the Alto you played didn't have the slot for it. I've seen Bass Clarinets that don't have the peg slot. The school Bass I used in 7th grade didn't have a slot. I'll have to look next time a see an Alto Clarinet. There aren't any in Marching Band and I'm the only one who doesn't play a normal Bb Clarinet. There's I think 2 Alto Clarinets when concert season comes around. I'll have to check...

Sonata Bluesummers
eek

How big IS your band room now that you're talking about it? whee
xd
We have a hall called "Simpson Hall" named after the old band director who directed there for thirty years, and according to my brother who was witness to this, Simpson just got up and left the bandroom during practice, giving rise to Jones. whee
Anyway... eek ...all through Simpson Hall we have these weird brown locker things, the "band lockers". (I don't use mine. >_> ) And right next to them are the lockers with the uniforms. Then the band room, which isn't big, but not small either, and I've been in the sousa closet and it's actually kinda big. eek Never been in the percussion's little room though, and I'm afraid to try. xp whee

Gah, Friday I saw several people barefoot on the bandroom floor. It was kind of disturbing, because the only cleaning they do is to sweep it, and that's usually once every two weeks. gonk <---off topic, yes, but one of those people WAS a clarinet. 3nodding
mine is 208 students big. 3nodding

Could be. I'd enjoy playing it more if it did. It's a heavy mofo, and my thumb is jammed up from playing the clarinet during marching season. -_- my instructors are mainly percussionists and dont understand what it's like holding a clarinet((or any intrument, for that matter)) at attention for more than 10 minutes.

I know! I hate holding my Bass at attention! It's nice when we're marching though because I can rest the neck on my shoulder...But that's only if we're marching! If we just stand there I can't have it on my shoulder and it's really annoying. And since I'm the only Bass Clarinet in the Marching Band...I can do whatever position I want for the parade rest, attention, marching, and the position before he calls us to attention as long as he says it's ok.

BTW: Your sig had me laughing for like 15 minutes! ((Maybe that's just because it's 2:25 A.M. here...But it's still funny))

Yah, that what I hear everyone say, and its kinda intimidating, but I do already know how to play a scale on it. Its really weird though, cause you have to pinch your mouth really tight on the double-reed and then if you go to play the clarinet right after, the mouthpiece of the clarinet feels like a mouthful. Its kinda hard to adjust! Feels all weird. 3nodding

So you play oboe now? Or clarinet? Or both? I would really envy you if you played both! Then you would be like my friend, only my friend knows how to play, like, everything (and she's good at everyting too!), so...
