nathan_ngl ZonkotheSane darkphoenix1247 B.longimanus My rabbi would insist on doing the same prayer in Hebrew, then in English. EVERY TIME. It's like, I get it, I get it, you read Hebrew better than me. maybe it's so people that don't know Hebrew as well can understand it? 3nodding they should know hebrew. end of story. but, the world being as it is, not everyone speaks fluent lashon hakodesh, and because of this, there is a wonderful organisation called torah mesorah, and they print the artscroll series, an accurate transliteration of nearly everything. www.mesorah.org saying the tefillah in english, if it helps you, more power to you. but it's the hebrew that's the ikor (main point, focus). i mean, come on, you're supposed to be begging you're Creator for mercy. i would suppose it helps to know what one is saying. G-d understands you in any language you pray in... It's simply the fact that it's "sfat hakodesh" that makes hebrew preferable... sweatdrop and the issue of mistransliteration, but yeah.

The idea is what the person's inclination is in heart. It is preferable that he understand the words he's saying, than to speak complete gibberish (to him) while calling it prayers. It's like standing before a king and reading your diary in german... when you don't know any german at all.

tsvi_tyl thats why "sfirat haomer" is said only in if you understand. (mishna berora). i hope you know what "sfirat haomer" is. For those who don't know, it's kinda like a "count up" of 49 days from the second day of passover till the festival of Shevout. The counting starts from 1 and ends at 49. It's basically counting the days that have passed during 7 weeks that preceed Shevuot. Though today, the omer doesn't have much meaning... Not till the temple is rebuilt, be'ezras hashem.

I like my rabbi, actually. We have three rabbis at my temple. I don't really care for the head rabbi, but he never leads services anyways, so it's all good. I really like the other two. My friend Shira's mother is actually one of the rabbis there.
