Nadyrr smiled slightly listening to Lucis. The being more in touch with ones own essence sounded about right as they got older they became more in touch with...what they were. Nadyrr considered this line of thought a moment and then pushed it away he felt like he was back in Philosophy class. His small smile turned to a grin as he looked to Lucis after his comment about growing quickly, "well seems you filled out pretty well." Nadyrr was just being truthful as he made the statement, he was in awe of quite a few of his classmates and professor's appearance. And while he still apprechiated their appearance he was well past gawking by now.

Nadyrr looked to the bottle of liquid they were to spray and then to the bag before glancing to Lucis, "er...so your definantly taller, so you think your stronger to hold 'em while I cut or...you want me to try? I'm pretty strong but well...not sure how strong you are." As Nadyrr spoke he took time to look around the woods, this place gave him a slight feeling of peace despite the defeaning plants that lay nearby.

Belwen curiously looked around as the teacher spoke, though she did catch the bit about the spray and the leaves. Looking over to Jaenelle she considered the acedemic. Jaenelle was a bit smaller in the body then she was and thus probably would be doing the cutting seeing no need to keep things quiet over her thoughts she decided to tell the girl as much. "I'll probably have to hold them." Belwen frowned slightly, she really hated ruining her nails over something like this but she hadn't been prepared for such an outting so had no gloves. With a slight sigh she started rolling up her sleeves. "After a day like this we are definantly going to deserve some time to clean up and pretty up. Always nice to feel clean and pretty after having to get messy."

2. Any of the palmlike woody plants that constitute the order Cycadales, containing four families: Cycadaceae, Zamiaceae, Stangeriaceae, and Boweniaceae. Cycads have crowns of large, feathery compound leaves and cones at the ends of their branches. Some have tall, unbranched, armourlike trunks; others have partially buried stems with swollen trunks. Slow-growing cycads are used as ornamental conservatory plants, but some survive outdoors in temperate regions. The stems of some cycads yield starch that is edible if thoroughly cooked. The young leaves and seeds of others also are edible.

6. Chlorophyll is a green pigment found in most plants, algae, and cyanobacteria.Chlorophyll is vital for photosynthesis, which allows plants to obtain energy from light. Chlorophyll molecules are specifically arranged in and around pigment protein complexes called photosystems which are embedded in the thylakoid membranes of chloroplasts. In these complexes, chlorophyll serves two primary functions. The function of the vast majority of chlorophyll (up to several hundred per photosystem) is to absorb light and transfer that light energy by resonance energy transfer to a specific chlorophyll pair in the reaction center of the photosystems. Because of chlorophyll’s selectivity regarding the wavelength of light it absorbs, areas of a leaf containing the molecule will appear green.

Eyes widened, Aysel peered all around her, trying to see everything at once. So this was the Outside, huh? It certainly was...more wild, she supposed, was one way to put it. Everything seemed to have a kind of hush to it that the City didn't (although she supposed that might just be her headphones)..every cracked branch and spoken word seeming to ripple disruptively through the air. And speaking of words...

Blinking slowly as she processed both Quenda's instructions and the Gatekeep's order, Aysel nodded to herself, and turned to her partner. "Do you mind holding?" For although she was loathe to admit it, she didn't think that she had the physical strength needed...not if these roots were as wriggly as Quenda had indicated.

----

Hush. Quiet. A strange grin, and a tiny hand drifting to the cord-and-ribbon harness that sat upon a bony hip. Ah yes, yes...still there, still here. Right, then.

Sombre breathed deeply, and then giggled, fingers reaching out to caress the tired trunk of a gnarled and droopy-looking tree. As the Cityman called out his order, her grin widened, and she tugged absently on one of Scalpel's ears. "Oaks," she whispered to him, and thought she felt him jolt in response, "Oaks and plots and Outsides and Insides...don't they know that we're Inside the Out?" A bit of teeth-gnashing in glee as she tripped a bit and nearly fell, and then she continued: "Their City is Outside-In, too...nowhere to hide the little-uns, nowhere to hide..."

Lior was awed when they came upon the plots, eyes widening as he stepped closer. Then he paused as he heard someone saying his name, eyebrows rising. It was easy to spot the one speaking of him, and he walked over to Abacus with a crooked smile, tapping the boy's shoulder. "Hey there. You looking for me?" he asked, chuckling. "Sorry for vanishing on you and all - you want to get to work, kiddo? Which job would you prefer to do?"

Answers for Team Lamda and Team Zeta

TASKS DAY 3:
1. In Druidic Magic, what are Seeds capable of?

Storing spells, assisting the casting of them.

2. Define a "Cycad".

Cycads are an ancient group of seed plants characterized by a large crown of compound leaves and a stout trunk. They are evergreen, gymnospermous, dioecious plants having large pinnately compound leaves. They are frequently confused with and mistaken for palms or ferns, but are related to neither, belonging to the division Cycadophyta.

3. What part of what tree is true Xylitol sweetener sourced from?

The fiber of a Birch tree, or the core of corn.

4. In Norse Mythology which two types of trees yielded Man and Woman?

Ash and Elm.

5. List ten types of plants poisonous to Humans.

Azalea
Oleander
Oak
Deadly Nightshade
Jimson Weed
Hyacinth
Yew
Privet
Foxglove
Bittersweet

6. Explain the properties of Chlorophyll.

In the reaction of photosynthesis, chlorophyll helps the electrons transfer from water (taken in from the roots) to the carbon dioxide that has been taken in. An electron in chlorophyll is then excited from a lower energy state to a higher energy state from light energy that is absorbed through the leaves. This excited electron is now able to transfer to another molecule more easily and starts a chain of transfers until it ends up carbon dioxide. This loss of an electron by chlorophyll results in the gaining of an electron of water. Therefore chlorophyll is the "middle man" for photosynthetic electron transfers between water and carbon dioxide.

In conclusion chlorophyll is able to harness solar energy and convert it to chemical energy that the plant needs.

7. Name the two Old World Locations the Arbutus Tree naturally grew.

-Western France and Ireland
-Canary Islands

8. What ways may medicinal roots be prepared for human application?

Tinctures, Tisanes, Topical (oil application), Whole-Herb Consumption (raw, boiled, cooked, heated, cooled, chopped, dried, powdered, etc.), Inhaled (aromatherapy)

Muladhara

10. List the definition and benefits of Ceres Style.

Ceres Style is when you grow all of the required ingredients yourself. It increases the potency of the potion's effects, doubling the damage it does.

11. During which Old World Holiday is a tree decorated?

Yule

12. List three types of Insects that could damage a North American forest.

Gypsy Moth, Siberian Moth

13. Name two books (fictional or factual) that mention the mandrake plant.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets; Antony and Cleopatra

14. What is the Old World definition of an Andras?

"Hells yeah I'm excited!" Antigone answered, a grin spreading across her face. "Let's go, Dag. D'you mind if I call you that?" Gold eyes turned from her partner, however, only a moment later, to take in the great expanse that was the Outside. Damn it all, but she wished she had one of those nifty camera things! Maybe she could get the boy- what was his name, Abacus? Something like that, anyway- to make copies for her? That was an idea. She shook her head a bit, trying to dislodge all the stray thoughts floating about in her brain. It was time to focus on the task at hand, especially since Quenda was explaining how this would work. Looking up to Daggart, she tilted her head in consideration. "The strong of the two of us, eh? I guess that'd be you," she said with a sheepish grin.

Cash offered Kallisto a friendly smile, and touched her shoulder lightly. "Don't be silly. I couldn't ask for a better partner than you! I'm sure we'll do just fine." Adjusting his gloves, the Phlegm turned green eyes from Kallisto to the Mandrake patch. "Well, it looks like we'll be starting now. Do you want to hold or to cut?" Cash figured that he would be able to do either, so he left the choice up to her.

Blayk lifted an arm, giving a bit of a flex. "I'm pretty strong," she said to Grave when Quenda was done explaining everything. "If you'd rather just cut- since you already said you're not all that great with plants, I can pull them up for you?" Blayk thought that the pulling and hold sounded more fun anyway. This way she could get her hands dirty.

Biwa blushed at the enthusiastic greeting, hesitantly touching the tips of her fingers to the palm of Arron's hand. Delightful? Lovely? Her? She squirmed a little where she stood, but tagged along with him, walking behind and to the left.

Grave picked a plot and squatted down. "I'd be more than happy to clip while you hold." He grinned up at Blayk as be began pulling supplies from the burlap sack and lining them up in a neat little row next to the plot. "As you might have been able to tell, being Academic has made me far more dextrous than strong." The items were all arranged, and Grave spread the burlap sack open, ready to receive clippings. He lifted the silver shears and held them up, testing their weight and movement. They caught the light and glinted as they made a concise swish, click with each pump of Grave's hand. "Are you ready?" He asked, swishing his tail back and forth and squeazing one eye shut as he looked up against the light.

Danna felt a weight lift off her shoulders when arwen asked her to hold the mandrake. She didn't want to say, but Arwen clearly didn't look strong enough to pull the Mandrake from the soil, let alone hold it steady enoguh to trim clippings. Danna, on the other hand, was far stronger than her meek demeanor revealed. She grinned and nodded happily, "Let's pick a plot then and begin, shall we?"

"Okies!" Cyphr piped enthusiastically. "I holds stuff real good!" HE pumped both biceps to prove it, as he thought she wouldn't take kindly to his picking her up and spinning her about. "But....I wanna makes sure I get it..." Cyphr continued after a moment, his voice a little unsure and his brows puckered with the effort of trying to hold onto a memory that was slipping away from him. "I just rip thems outta the ground and squirt thems?"

Mat jumped slightly when Zethyr tapped his shoulder, turning to look at the other. He'd actually been listening to the explaination of how to harvest Mandrakes, so he wouldn't end up messing this up. Tilting head a little and grinning at his partner, Mat bounced a bit on his feet and turned to look out past where everyone was gathered. "You ready to go?"

Morrow had no idea at all where his own partner was and he really paid little attention to the instructions. He was more interested in finding something to sketch than actually harvesting much of anything. Smiling slightly, he spotted Dariyn standing a few feet away with his own partner. Lips curving into just a bit of a smirk, Morrow opened his sketchbook and started to do some quick gesture studies of the two of them. The height difference and the way they stood was interesting. Humming softly, he decided to just follow them and sketch.

Emrys also had yet to see his own partner and was sort of edging over toward Arron, wondering if maybe he'd be allowed to tag along with them if this Yambati didn't show up. He was interested in what they were doing out here - but nervous being all on his own.

Jaenelle looked skepticly at her partner. She thinks she's stronger? Well, if that's the case why not let her do the grunt work. Not caring too much either way, Jaenelle nodded her agreeance and grabbed the shears. Mentally Jaenelle ticked off the items to remember when cutting. No more than four inches in length, and no more than four from each Mandrake.

Jaenelle watched as the Gatekeepers melded into the forest with ease and complete silence, save one. The Melancholy couldn't help but voice her opinion. "They sure are something..." She wondered if she'd be that proficient someday. Jaenelle rolled her eyes when Phlegm girl mentioned feeling 'pretty'. Jaenelle had never felt pretty, and thus never missed it.

"How about I spray, you pull, and I cut?" she offered.

Galadrae came scrambling forward from the back of the group, having fallen behind after getting distracted by her surroundings and getting her foot caught under a tree root. She tried to avoid the watchful glances of the gatekeepers as she weaved through her classmates and the mandrake patches, listening intently to Quenda as she searched for her teammate. Finally she detected him, and went eagerly to his side. "Um, you're Torrid, right?" she questioned quietly. "Um. Um. I'm sorry I'm late, but I'm here now!"

She took in Quenda's instructions, then looked up to Torrid appologetically and murmured. "I... I'm afraid I'm not very strong. Maybe you should hold the mandrakes?"

As she got the shears ready, she mumbled under her breath, "Oh, I hope we're not hurting the little things."

Arron smiled faintly in amusement at how easily flustered the girl was. Ah well, more fun to be had, he supposed, he just hoped that she would be of help to him on top of being strikingly lovely. Examining their bag, he arched an eyebrow at the girl, "Wanna cut? I can pull." Glancing over his shoulder, he waved to Emrys, wondering where the blond's teammate was...ah well, he could always come hang out with them.

Belwen smiled slightly to herself catching Jaenelle's look out of the corner of her eye, "the plan sounds good." Belwen glanced around trying to figure out where they should go to start and then decided that she should probably wait for the teacher to say something. With the bit of time she had she couldn't help adding a few things, "you know I've been thinking everyone has different ways of making themselves feel good. Whether it is dressing nicely, interacting with others, training in the arena, or studying. It all has to do with self-esteem and what is right for each individual." Most times Belwen wouldn't have been so thoughtful of such things but she had a feeling her partner didn't take time to consider such things and probably wouldn't enjoy a party like she had been considering getting going.

Though Belwen had a feeling Jaenella would look lovely in something suitably dark so she would be comfortable, maybe with a sweeping neckline of some sort. She pushed the idea to the back of her mind, there were quite a few she had a feeling would get some good from dressing up just a little for a night.
