The pain began to fade upon hearing Chandra's answer, and a low growl emitted from Demare's throat. That little...! So it WAS Clare's doing. He calmed himself, however, at the mention of the book. He'd seen Chandra with it before, but never really knew what it was. Was that similar to the supposed "God's" Book of Life? Or was this different?

"What exactly is that book, anyway?" he asked, glancing at its cover for only a moment. It looked rather... gruesome... and he liked it. "It's obviously tied to you somehow..."

Chandra looked down at the Book and ran a pale finger along one of the ugly trails of black stitches crossing it's cover.

"The Book of the Dead is a record of compiled knowledge from all the necromancers who have held it. To most the pages appear blank and even to me the contents are always shifting. I have only met one other than myself who has been able to see the pages."

The pages appeared... blank? Perhaps it was only meant to be seen by those possible of controling the dead. Those possible of necromacy...

"It's an odd question, but may I see?" the halfling asked, his wings fidgetting a little bit. "There's something I want to see... Something I want to be sure of."

Unhooking the chain from the Book, Chandra gingerly held it out to Demare. She braced herself inwardly for the horrible screaming that had accompanied Mictecacihuatl holding the Book. She had a feeling, however, Demare would not produce such a strong reaction from the Book.

"It can be tempermental." She said mildly.

Mordanath screeched lightly as Demare began to reach for the book, as if not liking what was going on.

"Oh, shut up, you," the demon hissed, his voice slightly different from before as his black eye peered down at the dagger, his red eyes opening for a moment. "Not like you have anything to do with this."

Carefully taking the book into his hands, he was a bit surprised to feel the flesh-like cover against his fingers. It wasn't like velvet or rubber like he thought it might be, but actual human flesh, sewn together to tightly cover the book. A chill ran down his spine, almost wondering if he should dare to open it now.

When the Book didn't begin bleeding or screaming, Chandra relaxed visibly. She was still wary, but curious to see what Demare made of the Book.

Demare ran a finger along the edge of the cover before finally flipping it open, his eyes focused on the pages. He seemed tense for some reason, as if he feared actually seeing something within the book.

Chandra leaned forward, tense as well. What page would the Book show him first?

For a long moment, Demare simply stared down at the page, noticing the first one appeared to be blank. Maybe that was a good sign... Flipping through a couple of pages, however, he noticed small, fuzzy writing on them. His black eye squinted a little bit, trying to see if he could make out the text, but it seemed illiterate to him. He couldn't make anything out at all.

His left eye, however, could see much better than the right could. Demian didn't realize that Clare was looking down at the book, carefully looking over the blurred words. It was a little difficult to make them out, but they were indeed readable, and he grew curious of the information Chandra's book contained.

Mordanath screeched at its master again, still not liking what was happening. The children were not supposed to see this. The children were not supposed to awake quite yet.

"Oh, for the love of whatever's holy..." the halfling sighed, turning to glare at the dagger once more. "Lemme alone, will ya? I just wanted to che--"

As his left hand brushed against the pages of the book, they seemed to take on a life of their own. A loud ringing began to sound in Demare's ears as he winced and grimaced, his left eye opening wide as the pages flipped about before coming to a halt on a particular page. There, the book gave reference to bodies, and appeared to have information about attaching souls to them. Not sure of what his other side would do, Clare quickly began to skim the page before him, doing his best to decifer the blurred words as best as he could. There wasn't really anything on how to create a body, but it did mention something about sacrifice. Something about... sacrificing someone in order to use their body for one's purpose?

Was it telling him he needed to kill in order to achieve his goal?

Before he could read anything further, Demian shut the book, a bit put off by how the book was reacting. His theory was confirmed, and that's all that mattered to him; the book reacted to those who had the potential for necromacy. If he, a demon, couldn't read the words in the book clearly, then there was no way an angel like Clare could even so much as see them. ...Right?

"Your book is weird," he muttered, holding it out for Chandra to take back. "The words are all fuzzy, and I can't make anything out. I guess I don't have anything to worry about, then..."

He thought for a moment, realizing the ringing had stopped when he closed the book. Was that supposed to happen...?

"And... th-thanks... for letting me see it."

Chandra accepted her Book back without looking at it. She was busy looking at Demare. His halves, they intrigued her - and she might have been imagining it, but she thought they had a different reaction to the Book.

"I am glad you are pleased." She said neutrally. "The pages it showed you seemed relevant to the earlier questions that were asked of me, so your need to know must be powerful."

She lifted one eyebrow delicately, wondering if she could coax out that other voice again.

Demare was quiet for a moment before his eyes narrowed. Questions that he asked earlier...?

"What questions...?" he asked, beginning to feel pain spread from the left side of his head to the right. That angel was just ASKING for it...

Demian... May I see Chandra? a voice pipped up in his mind.

What the hell did you do? Demian growled, demanding to know what was going on. This pain wasn't normal... It was too slow.

I haven't done anything. I would just like to se--

What the ******** did you see, you little wretch?

Clare was quiet, not so much as willing to tell the other what he'd discovered. Everything needed to be kept secret. Everything needed to be kept safe...

If you don't let me through willingly, you know I'm just going to force it. I thought I'd be nice, unlike you, and not let you go through that pain.

You think I'm not feeling anything right now?!

Whatever you're feeling isn't me... Now, please. I shouldn't take too long... Besides, if you're feeling pain right now, perhaps you should nurse whatever wound it is.

Demian hated agreeing with him, but he was right. He didn't say another word to the angel as the demon made the body stand up slowly, turning the eyes to Chandra for a moment.

"Someone wishes to speak with you..." he muttered. "Give us a moment to get... situated."

With that, his blank eyes returned to their normal opened state, and the body slumped limply to the ground.

"Interesting." Chandra leaned forward to watch Demare's prone body. This would be informative - to speak to the one who truly had interest in the Book.

While she waited, she could not help but give a small smile. Rather than expressing happiness, it signalled something more feral - a feeling closer to the thrill of the chase.

It had taken a long moment for the body to begin to move again, the child taking in a deep breath as he seemed to bring himself back to life. The halfling clutched at his chest, inhaling and exhaling slowly as he tried to get himself up off of the floor, his head pounding and the room swirling. There had to be a better way to switch back and forth... It only seemed to get harder as they grew older, and he didn't even want to think about what things would be like when they were teenagers.

Coughing a little bit, he managed to sit himself up on the floor, using the couch as a support for his back while he tried to get his strength back. Clare always felt so weak when coming back into the body... How did Demian manage to recover so quickly? Turning his eyes up to Chandra, his vision was still working on coming into focus as he spoke.

"Please don't think... me to be rude... but do you always smile at other's misfortunes?" he asked, noticing her lips curled up a little bit.

Chandra forced her smile into hiding and offered a hand as assistance should he want to use her as leverage to stand.

"Am I indeed observing someone's misfortune?" She blinked slowly at Demare, her voice curious and calm. She owed him no explanation for her actions, as he had offered none for his - he was doubtlessly the source of the earlier questions - but she offered one anyway. In her mind it was a guesture of good will, a sign she would offer information for information. "I was smiling in anticipation of meeting the one who had interest in the Book of the Dead."

Demare couldn't help but smile a little bit at this, feeling content on the floor for the moment. He would move when it was necessary, but right now, he just wanted to rest.

"Misfortune only in the fact that it's quite painful entering a body that seems to die whenever one leaves it," he stated, lifting a hand to rub his eyes a little bit. He could see clearly now, and the pain he felt was receading. "It's a little strange. It's as if this body were made to be powered by a soul instead of its own self. Without a soul, it doesn't work. The heart simply stops until someone comes along to start it up again. At least, a soul with the will to live..."

He assumed it was something those at judgement had done on purpose. Demian didn't understand it himself either, and they had yet to find any memories leading up to anything actually regarding the body itself.

"It's a pleasure to finally meet you myself, Chandra," he said, drawing a knee up close to his chest. "My name is Clare... the angelic half of the body."
