Is that because she is being mildly insensitive and didn't think of it in relation to you, or because she is doing it to get at you in some way?
and yeah... I'm not drinking L&P for a while.

You asked me a question (or at least I think it was me that you were asking). "Is that because she is being mildly insensitive and didn't think of it in relation to you, or because she is doing it to get at you in some way?"

And so I answered it... if you were in fact talking to me.

They do. It's the Catholics that do it, but Catholicism is just another branch of Christianity wink

You know what I dislike??... when people use the word "witch" as an insult. It makes me sad. cry My mom does it sometimes even when I'm sitting right next to her and she knows that I'm Wiccan. If that's not a slap in the face, then I don't know what is. *sigh*

Well, then, tell her it bothers you whenever she does it. I doubt she's doing it thinking, "Well, this wll hurt her."

You have to understand, the word "witch" as an insult is kind of engraved into the minds of most people through society. That happens a lot with words and terms - for the most part, people don't think about it, because it's just words to them. I still say, "Go to hell," or something like that, and I make jokes about Satan and hell - and I don't believe in either. xd But the words are in my head, as nothing more than words. That's likely the case with your mother and using "witch".

As for the topic...that isn't what always happens. wink But then, I had the luck to grow up in a very accepting family. I was never raised with a particular religion - my mom didn't have one because she didn't know what she believed, my dad is privately Christian (he believes that his religion is between him and God), one of my brothers didn't convert to Christianity until he was fourteen - and my other brother is athiest.

I just told my mom, "I'm interested in Wicca. Can I get a book?" and when we could afford it, I ordered a few.

I'm not secretive about my beliefs but I don't go around bragging on it either. If people ask me, "Hey, what's your religion?" I tell them, "I'm not dedicated yet, but I'm learning about Wicca." For the most part, if I don't make a big deal about it, they don't.

Actually, it's the other way around. Christianity is a branch of Catholicism. Christianity is Catholicism with stress on Jesus (Christ - therefore, Christianity).

I never had problems with my parents, or my mom about my relegion. I usually borow books from her. She's spiritual/alternative... Kinda hard to explain.

With my dad and his side of the family... They know I'm not Christian as they (me and my sis were never baptised) and that I don't go to church, but they keep their nose out of my relegion and I keep my nose out of theirs. I go to church sometimes, for Easter of Christmas because I like the lights on the ceiling - beautiful night sky made out of christmas lights... Or when there's a mass for my grandad. I think it's fair that I honour his relegion and salute his memory by listening to whatever the priest has to say.

(A grrrrrrrrrrrrr. Priest otherwise. Last year he had an preach about Metal Camp (a Heavy Metal festival) and how we have devil worshiping sessions there and how we're all evil. Bullshit. At least I never met/saw anything like that. Grrrrrrrrrr.)

We get along, nobody bugs me, it's all good smile
Mom even helps me collect proper stones for my new rune set.

Catholics are Christians. There are three umbrella terms for religions: Christians, Pagans, and Heathens.

I was realy lucky. My mom is wiccan, so when I found it she was of course, accepting. Later on when my dad found out, he reacted a lot better than I thought he would. Now he is pagan, and my whole family is training for a tradition together. Wicca brought us closer together.
I think wether or not you should tell your parents depends partially on how close you are and how much you need (or don't need) to be honest about your beliefs. Sometimes it is best to be honest, sometimes it is better to seal your lips. And if you must tell them, be ready for a good reaction and a bad one. I thought my dad would behave like he did when my mom first told him about her faith when they were dating, accepting but not beliving in it or wanting to deal with it, but his reaction was really good and he got interested in it.

I sooooo wish I grew up in a wiccan household. My sisters poke fun, my mum is waaaay too curious and my dad... I don't think he cares about ANYTHING I do, let alone religion. I feel like a giant wierdo in their company... I try not to hide certain things, but often end up doing it anyway... I hate it.

Mika Lockheart
my grandparents would actually burn me alive for being wiccan., The best thing (especially if youre a minor) is to not tell them. After your legal age break it to them gently.

Similar situation here. I told my grandma that I was no longer Christian and she burst out into tears and then tried to FORCE me to recommit regardless of the fact that she knew commiting to ANY religion should be a personal decision.
After I reminded her of that fact she kicked me out of her house and asked Mum to come and pick me up. Now Mum comes into my room every Saturday night guilt tripping me to come to church the next morning. Not to mention when she found out she tried to do the same thing my grandma tried. Luckily my Dad isn't really a Christian anymore so I haven't been getting to much grief or guilt from him.
I don't think I will tell them just yet about studying Wicca yet. I think I'll wait until I am living on my own, which should only be another two years.
The whole thing has sort of seperated my family, which is why I didn't want to tell them in the first place. Grandma doesn't talk to me, my relationship with Mum is well, not exactly strong, and with my Dad and me not being Christian anymore Grandma feels we betrayed Mum in a way and is plain furious.

I find this very interesting. I haven't told anyone in my family, except my sister because we are both Wicca. I haven't told my mother either because I know that she would just get all over me about it. My oldest brother knows I have an interest in it and he never says anything about it. He was going to be a priest, but changed his mind for his own personal reasons. My mother is CATHOLIC big time. Besides getting all over me about it, I am sure that she just might figure I will burn in hell one day. Now, let me explain that I am not as young as most of you. I will be 51 on January 26. So you see even when you are old, your Christian parents might have a problem with it.

Actually...the o/p was right the first time. You have Christianity, and you basically (basically) have two main types--Catholicism and Protestantism. Way back in the day, Jesus founded his church on his rock, Peter. Peter and the disciples ran about, spreading the religion, creating clergymen, and this gradually became formalized into the Church, specifically the Roman Catholic Church. Catholicism realized splits as popes were moved away from Rome and other countries, such as France, didn't like it when popes tried to move back, and there were two popes..Eastern and Roman..blahblahblah. Anywho. (This is my very abbreviated version of church history).

Then in the early 16th century a man named Martin Luther, on October 31st (yes of course this was done on purpose) nailed his 95 Theses to a church door, which outlined his beef with the Church (his protests). This was the beginning of Protestantism. For the first time, Christianity was truly split--between the Lutherans and the Roman Catholic church. It has since snowballed merrily into all kinds of different churches...such as the English Reformation (Anglican Church) being able to take hold and officially split from Rome in 1534.

-deep breath-

So yeah.

Hope that was..uh..educational? biggrin lol
