He nodded. "Alright. Now, if you've yet to notice the pattern, it just goes up. A B C D E F G A B, and so on. Now, when reading music, you aren't limited by notes in the staff. You can use the space above and below the staff, and then use ledger lines, which are lines placed for spacific notes above the staff. They can go as far as need-be above or below.
An interesting thing, if you play the piano you should know this, is that one ledger line above the bass cleff staff, and one below the treble cleff staff, is middle C, because it's in the middle of the Grand Staff, which is both Treble and Bass cleff together." He took a sip of water that was on his desk.
"Any questions so far?"
----
Michael had not jotted a single note, but he had maintained perfect attention all throughout, as did the other boy and other girl, while the final female student was asleep.
((Just so you know, all this stuff I'm saying is real music. It 'is' true.))

He heard the bell ring and looked up. "Well, that's it for today, everyone. Alright, you make sure that you don't forget this tomorrow. We'll pick up where we left off. Good work today, and I"m sorry I was late." He bowed to them and moved off out of the room, shoing everyone out and then locking up. He went to his office and shut himself in.
Michael walked up to Elizabeth. "Oh man, wasn't that interesting? I see you're a total begginer to music, huh? That's okay. If you ever have any trouble I'll be happy to help." He nodded assuringly.

Elizabeth looked shyly at Micheal. "Yeah I'm only half confused though. Most of it makes sense." Gathering up her stuff, she held it against her chest as she looked at Michael. "Oh, don't worry, I will take you up on the offer of help." Shyly, she looked at the ground, a slight blush coming up over her cheeks. "Um....are you doing anything this hour? I was gonna ask you if you can show me around, but if you're busy, I'll find something else to do." She looked up at him through her hair, waiting for his answer.

"Sorry, I gotta go check up on a friendof mine. He kinda slept in my room last night and I'll be he's still there. Heh, I kinda took off this morning." He started running off. "I'll make sure to show you around later! Probably after Chem!" He was out the door, running full speed to the dorms.

"Oh, ok. Have fun checking up on your friend." Elizabeth said as Michael ran out of the classroom. She gave a halfhearted wave as he got to the door, realizing he didn't see it. Hmm...where should I go now? I guess I'll go back to my room, drop off these books, and get my stuff for Chemistry. I guess I'll wander around the halls until that class. Slowly she walked out the door and to her room.

Koroji shook his head. "So, no more today, huh? Fine. I guess it's high time I got something to eat." He got up out of his chair, looking around at his things. "Amazing, all the time I've spent aspiring to be a high school band director, now I'm here, and I barely have a band. I should try to find Elizebeth. She still needs to come by. We have to pick out an instrument for her."
He moved out the door, locking up his office and the band room before he moved to the cafeteria.

Koroji had all manner of instruments set up. He had tables up and instrument cases popped open. On one table were flute, clarinet, and oboe, another had basoon and soprano and alto sax. The next one had a tenor and berri sax. The next table had a french horn and trumpet. The next to last table had baritone and trombone on it, and the final table had a tuba. He stood to the side and sighed as he finished. "Well, now all we need is our tester."

Elizabeth walked into the band room slowly, looking around. When she saw her teacher, she immediately went over to him. "I'm sorry it took me so long, Nagenami-sensi. Finishing spaghetti takes longer than I thought." Smiling, she looked up at him, still holding her books. "Now, how do we go about picking out an instrument for me? If I pick one, and I decide I don't like it, can I change?"

"Yes, of course, just make sure that you find out you don't like it quickly so that you don't waste time. Also, once you learn to read one staff, it's very hard to switch to the other. First, though, we'll have to see what you can actually play. Reeds, flutes, and mouthpieces are all played differently. Even the differant mouthpiece sizes are played differantly."

Sitting her books down, Elizabeth looked up at her teacher.
"Really? I didn't know it was that complicated....Can you tell me some of the small differences in how the reeds, flutes and mouthpieces are played? Or is there one you find to be easier compared to the others? I just...wow....didn't realize there were so many choices..."

"Well, with the flute, you have to vibrate the air over your bottom lip as you direct it into the instrument. That is what gives the flute such a vibrating sound, the fact that it has no real medium." He picked the flute up and blue over it, the sound vibrating through the room. He stopped for a second. "The note changes as the keys do." He played a bB scale and arppegio quickly. "And as with all instruments you can either tongue the note, or let the keys just change for a slur."
He stepped over, setting the flute down and picking up a tenor saxaphone. "With a reed, you have to use the air to vibrate the reed, stabalizing it with your teeth." He played the same scale on the sax. "So that's how reeds work."
He put the sax down and moved over to the trombone. "Now, the mouthpieces, you can't vibrate them, they're metal. Thus, you have to vibrate your lips to vibrate the air. You have to buzz your lips." He did this without the mouthpiece, making a strange, rasberry like sound. "And then, you can play. You change notes by valves, or in the case of the 'bone, by the differant slide possitions. But there are only seven of them, thus you have to tighten and relax your lips to reach higher notes. Those are called partials." He played the partials of the first position on the trombone. "This makes brass a little more difficult since you have to train your lips to be stable as they tighten."

Elizabeth looke don in wonder as her teacher played all the different instruments. When he was finished, she walked over to them and gently touched a few. Looking up at him, she smiled.
"I think...I think I'd like to play the flute. If that's okay with you. It has such a beautiful, delicate sound, and I like the way you have to play it." The hand that was touching the flute became a bit heavier, and Elizabeth almost seemed to grasp it. She seemed to be afraid he'd say no, or tell her this was a joke and she was too stupid to play. She'd been in situations similar to this one before.

"Ah, I suspected as much. Alright then. Let me go get a blue book for you. It will have all the fingerings that you need. And I'll get a begginer's book for you, so you can start learning how to read music." He went back to his office, gathered the two books and brought them back.
"Alright. Now, I want you to put the flute up to your mouth like I did and I'll show you how to hold it."

Gently, Elizabeth picked up the flute and raised it towards her mouth. She held it akwardly and lightly. Looking up at her teacher, she moved her hands and the flute in them towards her mouth slightly.
"I don't know if I'm holding this correctly. Can you help me? What else should I know, or should I do?"

He looked at her, studyingly. "Alright. Now position it here, below your lip. There. Now, put your fingers here, and here, aaaaand here. There. I know it stretches the pinkee a little uncomefortably but you'll get used to it. You vibrate the air over that hard edge under your bottom lip, alright?"
