We had a problem with that in the band i'm currently in. Although the old section used to be real mean and cruel at times(they'd make guys cry). The section that i'm accustomed to now tamed the section but managed to withhold some old traditions. The old section werent very good musicians so that's why they fell so easily to the incoming freshman class that took over.
I have come across some unruly rookies but i dont think they're gonna come back. I think rookies just need to be good sports and play along with the "initiations" into the section. I had a blast being hazed but then again they went easy on my cuz i knew most of the section already before i joined.

I'm an incoming freshie, and I naturally expected the worst. Surprisingly, my worries were for naught. (: Everyone (er, most everyone) was very open, including the seniors who I didn't expect to be. Eheh. Like, the first trombonist keeps saying, "Perfect! Man, you guys are so good!" We're far from perfect, but it's nice to hear it anyway. (;

phantomofmusic This is mainly pertaining to seniors or section leaders, or anybody else who has the same opinion. Does anybody have any incoming freshman that are just plain evil. I know our band has a class like that coming up in two years and the kids in it are evil and very vindictive. The rest of that class is just as mean. The sixth graders are actually getting suspended from school for months at a time for actually beating up kids, teachers, and stealing from everybody. But the band kids are slightly mellower than that but I worry that the band will all together be gone in a few years because of the new kids not taking an interest and not having the maturity to be in band. just wondering if I am the only one with that problem. The Phantom of Music ...I know maybe one sixth grader who ever got suspended and we had a pretty crummy school. sweatdrop You make us sound like little devils, you know... o.o

I'm an incoming freshman coming into University and I'm really excited. I'm sure you all are talking about highschool freshmen, but trust me, the anxiety is more because this is the thing you're making a career out of. It's rather permanent! whee

I think that Freshman who are focused (which is rare) can be a great addition to a band. Our clarinet section lost its leaders in 04 so this year we had 2 sophmores and 3 freshman (ine of them was me). I ended up being the only first clarinet and had like three solos.
And next year we have some dedicated players, like my little sister(barry sax). So I think that it can go either way with good and bad freshman.
CLARINETS RULE!!!!! biggrin

last year the now sophomores were complete fascists, they come into band and aimed to topple the upperclassmen, namely me, but I stand firm and just take it, they eventually give up because they get no where.
but there is hope, after being at band camp this last three days I got to meet a few of the incoming freshmen, and they posess a greater social skill then the sophomores to say the least (plus I've known the incoming guys for a couple of years through community activities.)
but this year (my senior band camp crying ) was really special - jimbo our bd invited a pair of eigth graders to camp - man can they play.
anyways, we initiated them, we talked one into crawling across the floor in his sleeping bag like a caterpillar just for shits and giggles.
then we carried the other into the shower at two AM and soaked him.
it was great, and they had fun the whole time

I'm a bitchy lil freshman who just joined marching band. I don't listen to nothin nobody says(I luv using bad grammar)(that was a double negative) So anyway, I am so unrluy I've had to do 36 laps, 97 push ups, 2456 crunches, and 4 suicidal runs so far. I had fun doing them too. (not all in one day. just so far since two weeks ago) hehe. I love counting them to.

theres one freshman clarinet im friends with......he''s been friends with upperclassmen since he first came to my school in 7th grade, but he''s getting a little out of hand with his socializing because well, he knows a lot of sophs and juniors, but he''s actually talking back at the seniors.
a lot of people, not only seniors are getting pissed off.

Actually, my high school band also has this problem. Of the guidance counselers in the middle school is discouraging students from taking band. The freshman class is usually pretty huge either way, but when they find out Marching Band is required to be a part of if they take the class, they usually drop out and take something different in their sophomore year. Half of my class dropped out this year [I'm a sophmore], and that's pretty upsetting. The only person of my class that had any REAL excuse to drop out was my friend Ashley, because she's a soccer star, but even then she still could have taken band because one of the drummers for the marching band also plays soccer, so...

I'm a highschool freshman in band in the pit. There's 13 people in my section...6 are freshmen (including myself), 3 are sophomores, 2 are juniors and 2 are seniors (The seniors aren't percussionists though....1 just joined the section for this year, so he doesn't know about that stuff and can't really help..the other has been in it for 2 years). That's how it usually works. I should think I'm a good little freshman. I help out with everyone's stuff to get on the cart and whatnot and then my own. sweatdrop But I still have only a vague idea of where everything goes exactly....and I'm not very strong. But there's at least 2-4 people in our section who just stand around and talk until it's their turn to move their instruments...which is specifically not allowed, but the section leader has little power and the teacher isn't around. Sometimes they help...but not enough. =/ I wish I was old enough to bicker at freshmen.
Anyway..we have a pretty big band in comparison to how much room we have, I'd guess. That may be why we now have a "Fall Concert Band" AKA how to get out of doing marching band, but still getting to go on the class trip at the end of the year. I only know two people in it who have excuses for it. One of my friends is in it because they randomly did not put him in band for school when he was supposed to be..so he missed band camp. The other one is a percussionist who has missed a lot of school because she has some serious health problems, so I can see why she wouldn't be in marching band. Other than that, I still don't like it because all the kids that would have quit band because of marching band are staying for fall concert....even though those are some of my friends. razz

Augh, some rookies this year... gonk No air raids, talking back to the upper classmen.... And they can't march. At all. One flute rookie was standing around doing nothing for 10 minutes while we were susposed to write in our dot books, and my friend[who's not a section leader, but she's still really good, plays piccolo and is only a sophomore...] told her to write in it, and the girl had the nerve to go 'I'm WORKING ON IT!!! " stressed Arg.
