I am so guilty of being a Grammar Nazi. I know exactly how you feel.
I even use full sentences in instant messengers. But I have really good speed, so it doesn't take me forever. But... You know. Is there anyone else here that uses full sentences in IM's constantly like I do? I'm just wondering, sometimes I feel like a total dork... But my significant other highly believes in proper grammar also, so I don't feel too bad about it. smile
Oh, here I go rambling. I better stop. xd

Hi. I'm EladrinStarmist, and I too am a Grammer Nazi. I use full sentences and proper punctuation everywhere online; on Gaia, other forums and ESPECIALLY on instant messengers.

I'm not so much as a grammar nazi than a spelling nazi. Misspellings drive me insane. I know I'm not the best speller, but if the word doesn't even look like it's supposed to sound, you're out.
As far as grammar itself goes, I don't mind acronyms. I'm guilty of "w00t" and "ZOMG!" and the occassional "lol". Lack of punctuation bother me a lot though. And I'm not saying "!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" is a lack of punction, its people who type like this with no periods commas or even capitalizations gets on me nerves its like what theyre saying is one huge sentence
Enough of that. Rawr!

I can't stand it when I can't tell what the words are supposed to be. Maybe I'm "old" but I think that the whole point of language is that everyone can understand it. I'm not really a grammer nazi, I just can't stand all the abbreviations either.

Seldaara Hey there everyone. Now, not to be a complete wanker, and I'm sure a lot of people hate me already, but I've got a wee bit of a complaint:
"OMG liek r u excited 4 this game? lol!"
Is not English, nor any other type of comprehensible language in existence. Please, please, please! Try to type out your words! I don't care if you have problems spelling, at least try. I know not everyone has proper grammar or spelling, and I don't want things to be formal or anything, but full words would be nice. I know not everyone speaks English (though most people that I know who have learned English as a second language know it better than anyone who's first language is English. . .)
-Numbers are not letters. The ocassional little w00t or whatnot, I don't mind, hell I do that quite often, just don't make entire sentences or paragraphs with them.
-One letter does not make one word (unless it's "I" or "a"). We all get excited from time to time, especially when a game is coming out that we've been looking forward to for some time, but still, things become much easier when you don't have to decipher someone's code.
-Anagrams should be used sparingly. Being that we're all on the internet, we've all used our fare share of OMGs and WTFs, and I like them too. But just because you like something doesn't warrant using it in excess. Unless you're being a complete dork, things like "ZOMGWTFBBQBYOBDDR!" are, well, just unsightly. Again, the whole code thing. If you're excited by something? Sure throw in an OMG. Confused? Have a WTF. Just don't go overboard.
Please just try to take these things into consideration. There's been many times I've just not replied to any posts because I couldn't be bothered to sit there and try to translate what the person is trying to say.
All that being said, if Celes is fine with the way things are, then just disregard it all. ^^; This is just something that is a huge pet peeve of mine, and I know there are people out there that feel the same way. "Me like u" now thats the stuff thats stupid. how ever if you are getting mad at stuff like. "Hey how r u?" then i am sorry to say it, but you are not a gamer nor some one that ever text,games on the net or types on the net. sure you can go to some webs sites that forbid it. just good luck finding one that is active. what i am saying is. " if u dont like that way i type tobad. its not hard to read unless u are lazy. and if u still cant read it dont call your self a gamer." edit: another thing, how can you have WTF and understand it. but not have how r u? again welcome to gamer chat... you cant excape it if your a gamer.

Whoa I think I just gagged on the scent of hypocrisy. We're being too lazy taking the time to understand it? You're being too lazy to take the time to WRITE it.
How DARE- I'm sorry, but how DARE you say we're not gamers if we don't like to deal with "Gamer chat." That's offensive.
Let me ask you something: In ANY game you ever played, how often did they EVER program it to speak like that? How often did they completely (or partially) ignore grammar, spelling, or punctuation, unless it was a horrible translation? Like, a HORRIBLE translation, and even then they spelled the words in full.
So no- You aren't a Gamer because you don't take the time, in a FORUM, to spell out words (Emphasis on forum because in IMs, maybe you're more pressed for prompt responses). That doesn't make you a gamer. Being a spelling dominatrix (xD) or grammar nazi doesn't revoke your gamer status.
Do you know what spelling words out and articulating well earn you? Some respect in the gaming community. If you filled out a resume for a position at Sony or Nintendo talking like that, would they accept you? No. And it's really NOT too much to expect that out of someone, especially when there are people more strict than the person who started this thread all over the internet.
Setting a standard of literacy is NOT a bad thing. Kudos to the grammar nazis. I stand with you.

I've been gaming for... oh... forever, and there's nothing about disliking bad grammar or unabashed laziness that disqualifies you from being a gamer.
Yeah, I'll occasionally type something silly, like "omgwtfbbq rofl rofl n00b," but only when I'm making fun of that particular manner of speaking. It's annoying to translate sometimes (although much easier than 1337-speak, which I hate with a burning passion that will never die). Why not take the time to type out the word instead of taking all those silly shortcuts? Seriously, does it take that much longer to type "are" instead of "r"?
But it's ridiculous to say that not liking 'Net/gamer speak disqualifies someone as a gamer. Simply ridiculous.
