Zach made a couple movements of his mouth, but no sounds chose to pair with the attempts. He glanced up and down her bizarrely tall neck again. She didn't get it. Well, he had one bit of advice for her.

"Kaveri... Stay away from mirrors for now," he croaked. Her changes looked terrible and it troubled him to see anyone in that kind of twisted pain. He idly wondered what she would do once it dawned on her that it was no dream. Still having difficulty finding words, he nodded a thanks for her invitation and stepped inside. Realizing himself a little after the shock of yet another islander who'd lost their humanity, he unfolded the letter to hand to her. That was, if she could even remember what the letters were for, now that she too had crossed the invisible line from human to something else. "Here you go..."

"I brought painkillers with me to the island, I'll get you some. I don't trust any medicine they offer." He glanced nervously at her palms. They looked terrible. It didn't even seem like she could move some of her fingers. The last thing she needed was to hear someone else's problems. He looked upward again, far higher than any normal person's head could possibly be. "Oh, nothing. Say, um... how's the garden coming along?"

"One look at my hands could tell me that," she says rather balefully, "I'm ********' afraid to see what the rest of me looks like... unless I dipped my hands in the mud while high and forgot about it. But that doesn't explain the claws."

Oh, hey. While still considerably out of it, she accepts the letter. It's a faint reminder of what she had been planning before, taking it carefully and looking at it. She tilts her head in confusion, then her eyes light up when she realizes what it is. Oh, that's right! Despite all the pain she's in, the letter brings a smirk to her lips. "Hey, man! Thanks for this, it's very important. Can't let anyone know about this, right?" She swings her head from left to right, over both shoulders before ambling off to tuck the letter in a drawer on the nightstand.

If anything, the transformation just gave her even MORE incentive to write letters once she's fully aware of herself. "That's sweet of you, thanks," she smiles, "Oh! And speaking of medicine, I did something with your old hat before my hands got ******** up. I've been meaning to drop it off but kept forgetting 'cause I was working on the garden." Not to mention the whole pestering helping Billy and getting high with Jamal thing.

She digs around in the drawer some more, before producing a rather ragged-looking black patchwork pouch on a long braided cloth string. A few small red beads hung from the top flap of the pouch (which can be secured to the rest of it by a gold button), and the entire thing was stitched together with red thread. She presents it to Zach, grinning. "It's a medicine pouch! Well, alright, you can use it to hold anything, really, not just drugs -- as long as it fits. You can wear it around your neck, stuff it in your pocket, whatever."

He gave her a nervous look before taking a seat on the edge of her bed. Claws? Her hands looked vicious. For all he knew, they could be turning her into a dinosaur, not that anyone - even these doctors - could possibly find spare dinosaur DNA just lying around. But her neck... it just threw him off. "I guess... you've changed. The claws, er, look real enough to me..." He stopped, making a sudden slashing of the air with his hand while looking down at the floor as though it had the most interesting carpeting he'd ever seen. "You know what, forget it. Don't listen to me. I can tell what I'm saying isn't helping. It's just so... sudden. Hell, it's frightening, to me. Every time I see someone who's changed... there's something about it..."

But that something isn't from them, it's from me, he wanted to say, unable to tear his eyes away from the floor.

He nodded, trying to force some enthusiasm into his crackling voice. "Not a word. If anyone sees that... well... you know what'll happen." It was too degrading to wink, so he merely cocked his head to the side, propping his head up with the one arm, and tried to look grave. He didn't doubt he looked convincing.

She still didn't look okay to him. Zach considered making a run to his duplex to pick up a reliable bottle of painkillers, but it seemed too risky. He didn't want to leave her alone in case she ended up hitting her head on something without even realizing her new neck length. He perked up a little at the mention of the recycled hat. It had been a while since he'd given her its tattered remains (it had been one he had taken on several cave and mine expeditions) and was glad to hear she hadn't given up on it for all the disrepair it was in. He shifted, taking his weight off the arm he was propped up on to take the medicine bag.

"Wow," he smiled, genuinely surprised at her handiwork. It had far better craftsmanship than anything mass produced, most of which he supposed was standard issue from Chinese sweatshops. He moved it around between his fingers to better get a look at it, having no other hand but the one it was already in. "It's amazing what you did with it. Thanks. I can probably carry some drugs in it." By drugs he meant medicine, but really, who'd honestly think he was talking about weed?

Vicious, clumsy, and certainly inflexible - all good descriptors for her new hands. Playing the banjo with them would be incredibly difficult, given how she technically only had three functional fingers -- the two that had merged are being counted as one, and just barely so. "My hands were normal yesterday," she recounted, sitting down on the bed and holding her hand out in front of her, trying to flex the fused middle fingers. "Then I woke up in a daze, felt all sick, and suddenly everything started to hurt. My neck, especially."

She reaches back to rub at the base of her neck, carefully kneading so that her new claws don't poke her. "Yeah, man. Those plans are going to rock so hard when they come into fruition," she grins, then looks over as Zach admires his former hat.

"You like it? I picked the colors out for the thread and button based on you -- yanked the button off of one of my old jackets, I figure I won't be needing a jacket on a tropical island anymore, 'cept for my hoodie. Too hot for that s**t otherwise."

Kaveri smirks at the mention of drugs, leaning over to reach into the nightstand drawer again. "You shoulda told me earlier," she says, rummaging around until she finds and holds up a little plastic baggie and a lighter. "Got some stuff you can carry in that bag -- but hell," the woman cocks her head, trying to wrestle the ziplock open, fishing out a joint, "I feel like s**t. Why not now? I need it more than ever after this."

She tries putting the joint where her lips once were, making an annoyed noise when this attempt fails. "********'... no wonder my goddamn neck hurts. I hope I can reach my mouth," she grumbles, now starting to realize just why she kept knuckling her throat earlier. "Yeah, I'm gonna need this stuff like crazy..." Feeling up her neck until she can finally find her face, she tucks the joint in the corner of her lips, then lights it. Taking a drag, she fishes out another joint and offers it to Zach, holding the lighter in her other hand.

"Here, man. You look like you need it, too."

Zach nodded along to her tale having had the misfortune of knowing the gist of what she must have gone through. Looking at Kaveri, he was glad he still had the same number of fingers he'd had for quite a few years now - five. Any less would go over quite badly with his brain.

The bag was different, interesting. He held it up by the string to admire some more before stowing it in a pocket so as not to lose it.

"Wait, what?" he asked suddenly, looking confused for a moment before his eyes scanned the plastic bag. Her sudden procurement of weed was a shock. "Oh! Oh, no, you see, I meant- well..." It was too late to explain what he'd meant by drugs, but now he was staring hopelessly as she proffered the joint and lighter in his direction. While it was a new situation, the oddness of it all took a lot of the confidence away that he would have otherwise had. That, and the fact that he had a tail. Having a tail didn't help. While a young student, he had heard the stories of generic peer pressure, but he had to admit none of them had quite the same circumstances as this. None of those speakers in high school talked of being offered a joint by a woman with what certainly looked like times the average person's neck vertebrae, while themselves being on their way to becoming a scaly amalgamation of seven animals. Definitely not a situation he was prepared for.

And ******** it all, getting high sounded pretty good at the moment. Who cared if it supposedly fried one's brain? If it could cure Kaveri of feeling like her neck had been stretched on a rack, it would probably do wonders for his mood too. There was just the matter of the smoke... "Okay... so I just... light it up? And inhale?" There had to be a trick to smoking he didn't know, because he'd barely had any encounters with cigarettes.

After a little hesitation, he delicately picked up the joint and put it in his mouth like she did, trying to follow her lead as best he can. "Alright... I can do this..." he mumbled vaguely as the joint obscured his words a bit. He felt somewhat stupid for embracing the peer pressure without so much as a squeaking of his conscience. Said conscience was probably shriveled and shrunken beyond recognition anyway, not that it was even an organ. Next, and after a minute for him to get his brain around the idea of doing something illegal in most of the world, he took the lighter from her and rapidly clicked it until a pale flame ignited. He held it to the end of the joint, which began to smoke, giving off a strange and musky smell that was all too familiar at college parties

There was a bit more hesitation as he fiddled with the lighter between his fingers before handing it back to the long-necked woman. He placed a pair of claws along the joint to steady it in place (no sense dropping it), and with a disastrous attempt to inhale he got his first lungful of marijuana smoke. His face flushed and coughing ensued.

Kaveri wasn't exactly prepared for it, either - at least, not the whole transformation thing. And what better way to deal with it right now than getting high and forgetting about it for three hours? It would ease the pain and sour mood, even if it's only temporary.

She didn't even need to pressure him - she'd kind of just assumed with the way that he talked about drugs earlier, but it soon became clear that Zach was new to smoking in general - and not just weed. Well, uh... at least she shared...?

"Inhale slowly, keep the smoke in your lungs for as long as you can, then exhale," she instructs, smoke pouring out of her mouth. She puts the lighter back, then quickly leans over to wrap an arm around Zach's shoulder and pats his back a few times when he has a coughing fit. "Whoa, whoa, slow down! You don't just suck it down like that -- take slow, deep breaths, like yoga or something. You'll get used to it." She takes another drag, closing her eyes as she lets the smoke roll around inside of her for a while before exhaling it through her nose.

"I shoulda realized you didn't smoke, stupid me," she comments, holding the joint out of her mouth to talk. "But whatever, it's good for you. It expands the mind. When you're high, you notice all these interesting little things you'd never notice otherwise." She carefully lays on her back, mindful of the stubby and still sore tail that protruded from her hips. She rests an arm behind her head, absently and slowly kicking her legs.

(( I think from now on, my RP post cutoff is going to be 1am. Beyond that, there's no telling when my brain will give out D: ))

So much for thinking he knew what he was doing. Zach quickly pulled the joint from his mouth as his lungs worked to expell the smoke. Kaveri thumping on his back was helping a little to get every bit of noxiousness out. After a couple of extra coughs for good measure, he drew in some breath. His tail had gone almost rigid, but slowly started to go back to its usual relaxed twitching.

"Oh, don't worry. I shouldn't have used the word 'drugs'. I'm on a couple medications is all... but marijuana isn't one of them." He eyed the joint dubiously before returning it to his mouth to try again. He hoped the phrase 'practices makes perfect' would hold true. Keeping Kaveri's instructions in his mind, he took a longer drag. Though he coughed several times shortly after, it wasn't as painful as the ones from the first were. He put his hand over the side of his crimson-flushed face before removing the joint to speak more easily.

"Really, d-don't worry... I haven't done a lot of things. Guess you've done pot before?" Idle conversation was starting to come a little easier to him. Glancing at the horribly longnecked woman, he took another unprofessional-looking hit of the hash cigarette. Well, it was progress, or at least an awfully odd use of that word. After a little more coughing, though he was making an effort to control it, most of the smoke came out of his mouth. A little escaped his nose as well. "This makes me realize... it feels like I missed out on life. It's a little bit late to realize, I know. But... I never did do anything worthwhile." He made a wide motion while holding the joint in his hand. "And just look at where all my education got me."

"I did it every now and then, couldn't really make a regular habit out of it or anything like that -- mostly I just did it when my friends did it, smoking pot is more of a social activity than anything else," Kaveri explains, taking another drag. "It's more fun when you're high and with a bunch of other high friends, just laying around making deep conversation and observations on the world. s**t'd get really phiolosophical sometimes, but oftentimes we just admired the intricacies of the patterned wallpaper... it was just fun."

She's starting to feel the effects of the drug, feeling the pain in her beck subside a bit. She sits up, looking over to Zach and crossing her legs, her neck and head sinking down like a limp noodle. This would take some serious getting used to.

"Man, don't say that. You're still young -- correct me if I'm wrong, you look like it anyways -- and you've got your whole life ahead of you. Except, uh... I'm not really sure what we could do for a living once this horseshit experiment is over. Sell ourselves to the mascot companies?" Pulling the joint from her mouth, Kaveri laughs. "Man, I bet I'd be some kind of funhouse mirror company mascot with this weird-a** noodle neck. I wonder what the ******** I'm supposed to be."

It's almost tempting to get up and look into the mirror, if only for a good long laugh at herself. She's high enough for it to be genuinely funny.

It was difficult to say when the effects really started to kick in. Zach twirled the joint between his thumb and middle finger, watching it with more interest than he had several minutes before. "Ah. That would be why I never tried it." A grin crept across his features. He couldn't help feeling as though what he said was somehow more humorous than he'd intended. "If it does that to watching wallpaper, imagine what you'd think of an optical illusion. Like the picture of the vase and the faces. Huh, but I always did think it was the vase..."

He looked over at Kaveri, surprised to see her head bobbing downward. It looked really silly. Unfortunate, but silly. "Twenty-six since last Friday... not that a calendar really means much here. I guess we could always star in low-budget sci fi movies. Just tell the director you bring your own costume." His grin widened a bit, and he leaned his head to the side a little before taking another drag. The smoke came out in a burst from his mouth, followed by a little coughing and a laugh.

"A funhouse mirror? Oh wow, I haven't seen one of those for a while. I guess they wouldn't be any fun for you any more - look into one and you'd just look normal again." His tail swished from side to side as he grinned at her. "Maybe you're becoming a giraffe. Those animals are so weird... but they don't have claws. I guess you could be just part-giraffe though, that wouldn't be too bad. You'll just have to watch out ceilings."

"Oh yeah, I remember that picture. I always saw two dudes talking to each other," the long-necked woman observed. "But sometimes I saw the vase. Maybe it's both. Or two guys talking to a vase."

"Oh man, you shoulda told me about your birthday!" Kaveri pipes up, "I would have given you something. Actually... hold up and wait. I have something in mind." Pushing herself off the bed with the joint hanging from her lips, she wanders over to a folded pile of clothing and sifts through it, kneeling down to search. "Oh yeah... these. These would be perfect," she says, pulling out a pair of bright purple shorts from the pile.

Standing up, she walks back to the bed and presents Zach with the shorts. "I don't know, something about you reminded me of purple shorts. It'll compliment your eyes, try 'em on! Happy belated birthday, man!" She gives him a sidelong glance, grinning and quirking her brow with curiosity. "Do you read comic books?"

Zach nodded his head a few times at her observation. "Haha, I didn't know until about an hour ago, myself. Kind of stupid of me not to know that it was my own birthday. I guess I wasn't expecting to be here for this long - you know, forever." His eyes followed her movement across the room, then glanced over his shoulder when she moved out of his range of vision. He placed the joint back in his mouth for another drag, still trying to get the hang of keeping the smoke in his lungs long enough without coughing too much. Damn asthma. It would just have to wait.

"Purple shorts?" he giggled. "Where did you get those?"

He placed the joint back in his mouth again to free his hand. His words were muffled a bit. "'Anks, Ka'eri. Oh, 'o, 'ot really." He was a little less coordinated than he had been before but not about to fall over sideways. He wavered a moment, put the shorts down on the bed, then unzipped his pants and let them drop down to his ankles. He had some simple blue boxers on underneath, but his red tail had the back end of them pulled down considerably. The pot had made him really uninhibited. With a wobbly combination of kicking and pulling, he managed to get the pants off completely. He reached for the shorts and pulled them on with considerably more ease. They were a pretty close fit, a little tight around the waist. His tail hung limply out the back now, twitching in one or the other direction very infrequently. He pulled the joint out of his mouth again and made a slow twirl.

"Goodwill," Kaveri giggles. "They have some really oddball stuff there. You wouldn't believe the crap I'd pick up. I saw those and I was like, 'oh god I have to get them!' but then I took them home and they didn't fit."

Zach changing right in front of her causes Kaveri to burst into laughter, covering her mouth and taking another drag from the joint peeking out between two fingers. "Haha, they look great on you! But I was thinkin' -- I was thinkin', yeah, those little ear finny things of yours. They remind me of a comic book character named Fin Fang Foom. He was a big green dragon who wore purple shorts, and he'd walk around and crush buildings and stuff while shouting, 'FIN FANG FOOOOOOOOM!' And then I remember I had those, see?"

Kaveri waves her arms in the air, raising her voice. "FIN FANG FOOOOOOOOOM!"

He felt a little dizzy, so he sat back down on the bed again, lying sideways a little bit. He was surprised at how intrigued he felt by something as simple as what she could find in a thrift store, but he asked anyhow. "Oh? Tell me."

"Fin things? Huh? Oh, those things. I don't even want to know what they are. Maybe they're wings. Wouldn't that be an awkward place to have wings? Right on your face." He smiled wide enough to show his canine teeth at her description of the comic book character. "Hey, I can always terrorize colorblind people." He giggled at her imitation.

"I once found a huge pair of fuzzy white tiger slippers," she recalled, looking at the ceiling and twirling her finger. "I didn't know they still made those, at least not for adults. My friend bought those." She pauses to think, then adds, "And a blue sari. I bought that, brought it with me. I got it for, like, three bucks. It's really... really pretty. I should go get it."

Kaveri wanders over to the pile again until she comes back with the folded-up blue cloth in her arms. She needed something with pretty patterns to stare at. She sits down at the foot of the bed, holding it in her lap as she looks at all of the embroidery in the fabric with an expression of wonder. "Wooow... I never noticed this stuff the last time I looked at it." She shows the sari to Zach. "Check it out!"

It should be noted that she never wore the dress - but it was a wonderful thing to look at while high.

After Kaveri moved to get her sari, Zach took another puff of the joint and coughed a couple times. He stared at his hand as he removed the joint again, suddenly appreciating the intricacy of his clawlike nails. It was only when she returned with the blue fabric that his attention was drawn away from them. He studied the embroidery, his voice filled with mellowed-out astonishment. He hadn't realized how much detail went into skirts. "Whoah..."
