Haha, I'm a person who hates having to draw specific outfits for a character. It's like "They have to have more than one set of clothes, goddamit it! What happens when they need to wash them?"

XD I wanna draw Rivek in pajamas. Or rather, what he sleeps in which isn't really pajamas but just a loose shirt and pants.

xD xD...that would be fun xDDD

well, my friend once asked me the exact same question xDDD...I anwserd that they have whole closet of exact same clothing sets xDDDD

but I'm a strange person...strange things bother me....for example, colors for the character o.o....they have really much to do with personality for me o.o...for example purple is a loner that wants to be with people but can't, a bit angsty....blue is lonely, but manages to keep his smile, green is mysterious, yellow childish, red easy to anger.....yup, I'm really strange xD xD....and I HATE more than 2-3 colors on one character xDDD

Haha, dork response...

I agre ewith you, though, that colors make a person, but, I use a broader range than that - a closet entirely of three colors bothers me a little - like, I need more shade variation. Clothes make the person. We learned this in creative writing class - by describing how such and such has on a black Threadless t-shirt, navy cargo pants, studded pleather bracelets, and Chucks, we can get a good sense of the person and how he or she would act. Like, look around in your school. What do you wear? What do your classmates wear? What do eople you don't like wear? Like, it may be often said that "clothes don't make the man", but they sure show the world what kinda person that man is.

As someone who works in b/w, I'm actually realy sensitive to colors because a) I picture all my drawings in color even though I don't execute them thusly (in Threhold - pic on the right in my sig, Rivek's shirt is cream-colored, his tunic is plum edged in gold, and the cloak is a deep mahogany-cross-wine-red) and b) I need to make sure that the selected colors have enough tonal difference that, when rendered in b/w, you can tell the differences between materials and each piece of clothing.

Like, RIvek's modest, so he chooses very unsaturated colors - greys, dark blues, hunter greens. THey also happen to be my favorite colors *cough*. The thing with Rivek is that he's not a picky person, so he'll take clothing of any modest color. (On his paycheck, he can't afford to only buy one color of clothing. Sale is sale. XD; )

It's not the number of colors for me, but rather how the character wears them - what the character chooses to buy and such.

well, somehow, too many colors just bother me and distract my attention >.>....it's really strange, but I just can't get rid of it xd xD....different saturation and lightness of the same color is ok, but the hue is a no-no for my poor eyes xD xD....I somehow have the feeling that the picture is attacking me when it's too colorful o.o...

XD Strange is good. <3 I'm wondering, though, does the black star symbolize anything? Is it a birthmark, I suppose?

Elaborate on psychich abilities, neh? ^_^

Yes, but it's completely silly (of course). Do you remember at the beginning of Ghostbusters where Dr. Venkman is showing those flash cards with symbols on them to two people? Those cards are called Zener cards, and they have five symbols - circle, plus, the waves (or "a couple of wavy lines", if you will), square,and star. So that's where I got the design idea from (; Story-wise, four other people were born with those symbols over their eyes - so far I've only had the plus and waves illustrated, but other two will come along eventually ... well, I hope they will (:

Castor's beginnings on earth are fairly humble as a supernatural being go - a number of people claim to be psychic, of course. His powers increase as he gets older, though, as does the range in which he can use them. Eventually when things like precognition and clairsentience start kicking in - and he gets better at them - he leaves home (he's about twelve at the time) because he can finally see things like evil in it's natural form (like ... oh, I don't know - if a demon were imitating a human or possessing one, he would be able to see the demon). It's all a bit daunting, really.

As for the question about too many OCs ... I don't know how many I have, but each of them has a place in the stories I write, so they tend to come out randomly as and when I need them to make an appearance. There are a lot, and that's why I'm flaking on mentioning a number, because finding out would probably take too much time right now (;

yeah i hate that - just doesn't make sense for you to create a character that never changes clothing D:

unless they're some wanderer and only carry one set of clothes

any ocs that aren't logical bother me

That's quite honest. I haven't seen your temper yet, so I couldn't remark on that (; My impression of the character Mekania is that she's quite cool and collected under fire, but if something does cause her to get angry in front of anyone they're really in for it.

I could be wrong about that, of course (;

Ohoohohoh another similarity is that we're both major sexxxxilicious hotties. 'Cept not.

But you've hit the nail on the head. She can usually handle things, since she's been through a lot, but here in zhe mortal world she's getting hit with new things. Like looove. So the things she can't fake, she gets angry at. Like the pain of being left by the guy she loved. She went on a bit of a rampage (causing all those commissions with the broken pillars/destruction in the background and such). She gets pretty angry and hateful. And when the anger gets out of control she reverts to Hunter!Mek. Which is no fun for anyone, really.

On the one outfit thing- I don't mind it but that's probably because I had a crush on Doug (the nickalodean cartoon character) when I was little and he had a closet full of the same set of clothing. And it's always possible that a character has more than one set of clothing but you don't really want people to draw the other ones.

For me, Mek wears all kinds of things and I don't mind leaving the clothing up to the artist. But Tanek wears armor (unless I'm commissioning him nekkid/in a cloak) and most soldiers don't get a change of style.
Jade/Satin who are my detective/cowboy characters don't change clothing either since their outfits are more "uniform" and in their story, they're time travelling at random (on accident) so they really don't have time to change, at the risk of being sent somewhere naked.
Leiko changes clothing. Loki is a new design but her outfits are pretty much the same since she's a wandering gypsy. Nakari has different clothing, I just don't commission her enough to come up with new outfits. Taig/Strife/Bade don't have set clothing either though I need to design a suit of armor for Taig.

So sad to say, but when I started Gaia way way back I really just wanted to do a straight cosplay of Princess Nausicaa from Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind by Hayao Miyazaki. But after getting very frustrated with the limited amount of clothing here to do a proper cosplay, I gave up and just started being me. But after a while the Gaian Nausicaa took on a life of her own, and now she has her own little home and legacy in Avatar Talk and a "Blue-Clad One" style that is very much hers. It has evolved over the years but everyone can still follow, because she has a few signature things that she always wears - her pilot goggles, something blue, and something symbolizing the wind. Funny enough, she evokes more "I love Nausicaa! I have all her anime and manga!" comments now than when I tried to do a perfect cosplay. I guess her spirit lives on here - some things never change I guess!

Dude, I think that's so cool - the thing with the Zener symbols. XD

Haha, yeah, I think i'm in your situation, too. LIke, I ahve characters like such-and-such's father who, although has no screen-time is integral in character development, etc. I sometimes count them, sometimes don't.

Well, points for making me laugh (; Not that I'd know either way, but making the claim with so many Xs was amusing (:

You'll have to tell me about how the demonic world Mekania's part of works some day (I'm sure it'll be an involved answer, so I won't hassle you to do it now and here ... unless you want to). I can't believe anyone would leave Mekania - she'd be able to brain them!

Thank you (:

It's just a bit impossible to do if you have an extensive universe, I think; every person one mentions in their own story/RP is an "OC". In terms of art commissioning, I probably wouldn't commission a piece of some random geezer who gets about two paragraphs screen time, but he/she/it/they are still an original character (and there's just too many so this is my big excuse for not counting).

As for the one-outfit question ... I don't know - "eh", really, I suppose (; People will naturally commission their characters in the costume they think is best or like the most (an assumption, but I'm going by what I've seen). Meanwhile, when I write about my characters I rarely (if ever, and I don't think ever, now that I think of it ...) do an extensive run-down of what they're wearing - for the most part (unless someone is wearing something significant) it's just really immaterial to the plot.
PostPosted: Thu Apr 20, 2006 6:14 pm

Well, yeah... I do find it sorta immaterial, btu it helps sometimes. It's just that a full rundown gets kind of nuts. Like, if I say Rivek's wearing a sword and boots, then it says summat about him. But if I say he's wearing a sword, a shirt, pants, socks, boots, a tunic, and underwear... that's a bit much. XD

If I were reading a book where, after a time nothing had been said about clothing, and suddenly very detailed descriptions including socks and undergarments came in, I'd probably think those items were significant. If they weren't I'd wonder why the author padded things out so much (;

Meanwhile, this discussion has me considering to hunt for an artist who would illustrate a weekly wardrobe of the same character ... I suppose it might kind of be like one of those paperdoll sort of things (otherwise it would be seven characters, and I don't think I can think of seven relevant expressions). Mm.

I'm glad I made you laugh! I kinda..snorted a bit when I wrote it because I find myself way too funny >>;

Mekania's version of hell is in fact so involved that I've never actually been able to explain it properly to anyone. But one day! And I'll tell you how it goes once I figure it out.

You'd be surprised how many times I've heard that but people keep leaving her anyway XD My newest RP partner seems to have disappeared too but we've only gotten a paragraph into an introduction so it's not too bad of a loss.

I'm curious, I know a decent number of us are writers when it comes to OCs... where do you stick your stuff? XD Haha, do you, like, hide it in a drawer? Leave it dead on your computer? Post it on DeviantART? A personal website? Have a Gaia thread?

Me, I post it to Livejournal, lol.
PostPosted: Sat Apr 29, 2006 5:50 pm

i set up a livejournal account specifically for my ocs and the whole "joykill" story, but i never got around to using it.

i have a fattyo journal i keep in my underwear drawer [XD] where i jot down everything that comes to me from front to back. from back to front i write the actual story including everything i jotted down previously. it isn't in chronological order, but it's divided up into chapters - a lot of flashbacks and twists in the story. i think it keeps people reading. i have yet to type any of it up or have anyone else read the entire story. i haven't even skimmed through it all to see if it makes sense. it probably doesn't, but that's ok - i don't really think it should.

The things I write that I'm fairly certain nothing will come of go up on a little site that I update very infrequently (I also sometimes have LiveJournals for NaNoWriMo or other random projects).

At the moment I'm preparing a manuscript, so unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how one feels about it) I don't really have anything - beyond a paragraph or two - online featuring my OCs right now.
