My name is: Degras Tysson (Ephias Sagine)
I am in team: Red
Points: 1

I am exploring: E8

After finding little trace of the winterbeast at the lake, Ephias veered west, retracing his steps until he reached the river. There, he turned south, following the rocky shore. In places where the river bed was widest and the water did not flow so quickly, ice crept out from the banks, threatening to trap the water below. Opaque white it looked thick enough to walk on near the shore and maybe even cross, but Ephias kept to the trees. Looks could be deceiving, and besides out in the open he would be exposed to the wildlife. He pressed on, content to stay on the west bank of the river.

For over an hour, his journey proved uneventful. As he reached the place where the river thinned and the rapids began however, he made a fortunate discovery. Sitting abandoned on the shore, was a raft lashed together with tree branches and old rope. Cautious, Ephias emerged from the shade of the trees to approach. Gravel, chunks of ice, and sediment crunched under his feet. Moving slowly, he took great care in where he stepped to avoid slipping. If he fell and injured himself out in the wilderness... well... Morbid visions sprang into his thinkpan. Ephias dismissed them, unphased. That would not happen.

He made it to the raft without incident. There were no traps, no creatures, trolls, or winterbeasts waiting to jump out at him. As he approached however he noticed the weathering on the wood, and the thinness of the rope. He picked at it with a finger, testing. It had obviously been sitting there for some time. Whoever had made it, had left it behind long ago, possibly weeks. With the winter chill decomposition slowed, so it was difficult to estimate a precise range.

((Filling more later, but there's 300 for now. (: ))

DAY 2 RESULTS
Let's see how your two ice stars are getting along!

1)+0 points The glamour of your gerbils is undeniable, but evening wear makes it hard for their tiny nubbin feet to move anywhere. This will not bode quite as well for their mobility!
IF you have a Beautiful Gerbil: +2 additional points Aha! The look is surprisingly fitting! The audience coos and ahhs as the shiny gerbil pair is revealed to the public eye.

2)+1 point. Silly hats allow for plenty of gerbil movement and a ridiculous appeal! While they may not be quite the most elaborate costumes, the gerbils don’t seem to mind as you tie their little hats on.
IF you have a Spirited Gerbil: +2 additional points The energy and kookiness from your gerbil radiates through the crowd! It tries to snuffle and wiggle, making its hat a hilarious part of the show.

3)+3 points Gerbil sweaters make your tiny competitors very comfortable! The extra layer of warmth provides them some heat while in the chilly arena, not to mention that their matchy-matchy sweaters make them look like twinsies!
IF you have a Cute Gerbil: +2 additional points The chubby puff of cute is extra adorable when it starts to wiggle around like a silly potato! This look just works.

4)+0 points The fashion attire swamps the gerbils, and masks obscuring their eyes means a lot of gnawing and chewing on the goods. In a short amount of time you have shreds of costume… Oops!
IF you have a Smart Gerbil: +2 additional points Fortunately before the damage can be done, the gerbil squirrels its way out of its costume – saving you a wardrobe malfunction and utter despair.

GERBIL DANCING DAY 3
It’s, at last, time to start. Your turn is up, and your new gerbil pair is raring to go (hopefully). You walk up to the edge of the rink area and look onto the ice. It’s quite a distance from the edge of the lake to where they’re supposed to perform, and you have no idea if they’ll get there on their own. So, it’s time to drop your gerbils into action! How do you do it?
1) HARD AND FAST. OVERHAND.
2) Gently slide them onto the ice.
3) Put them down and let them walk themselves!
4) Kinda… Spin ‘em a little bit.

E8 +1 points - This area appears to mistakenly have been marked, because it's actually the source of a troll tourist attraction concerning enormous salamanders living in the nearby lakes. At least when you ask for directions they offer some good advice!
B11 +2 points - Some fishertrolls at the plentiful lakes here have some very valuable information for you, offering up a valuable clue.
F12 +3 points - There appear to be some scratch marks here on this tree below a huge wasp nest torn in half. It's risky, but suffering some stings you manage to get a mold of the markings. These claws are huge!
E15 +1 point - These brisk mountain base lakes are currently being inhabited by enormous grizzlebeasts. You can't even get close enough to investigate, and accidentally anger a grizzleparent to boot!
I11 +4 points - Exploring the flatlands gives you lots of investigation opportunity. There are quite a lot of fauna prints, which gives you an idea of the migration direction of the winterbeast!! Nice!

I am in team: red

My couple is: Jazzercise (beautiful) and Ginger (smart)

I choose option: 2. Gently slide them.
My current score is: +2

Regardless of how effective or not the silly hats were, Fellah still thought they were darn tootin' cute. Tonight they had to head out onto the ice. The redblood had confidence and the two cuties he'd been working with. He hoped they might have even remembered him. He knew he was far from in the lead, but that wasn't going to make him give up on Ginger and Jazzercise!
Slowly giving them a gentle shove out onto the ice, he hoped they could figure out the rest on their own.
As others shoved their gerbils on the ice as well, Fellah realized how cute it was to watch the little critters slide harmlessly across the slick surface. He decided to make a mental note about the merits of proposing a game based on sliding gerbils across ice. He was sure it would go over well at the next Bloodfest, it was just doubtful that he would actually remember this for a whole year.
Fellah was a lot of things, but smart was not particularly one of them. If nothing else he could at least hope that the gerbils appreciated the gentle manner in which he got them to the performing area. He seemed to care what the animals thought of him a little too much.

Deciding to blindly choose a location had really worked out well last night for the redblood. Well, mostly worked out. Fellah was still sporting some bandages from the wasp stings he had to endure to get the claw castings, but in the end it turned out for the best.
Papabuff thought the whole thing was pretty ridiculous. He was still around primarily to keep Fellah alive, as well as provide a main form of transportation. His troll son had tried to pull the wagon in the past, but it never ended...effectively.

Tonight, Fellah decided to leave his choice up to fate once again. His finger landing on a rather far away location meant it could be a long night. Though as was true with most things, no risk, no reward!
Papabuff just grunted and rolled his eyes, well as much as a giant buffaboar could roll its eyes. "C'mon Papabuff, this is fun! We might get lucky and actually see the winterbeast tonight." The lusus gave Fellah a doubtful look, but at least he wasn't being obstinate, just doubtful.
Hitching up the wagon and gear, Fellah gave his lusus a big hug for being so patient, and then off into the wilds they went.

My couple is: Steamtrain Express (smart) & Exiled Warrior (Spirited)

I choose option: 2) Gently slide them onto the ice.
My current score is: 3

How frustrating, Exiled Warrior kept chewing through the costumes Cerpin was trying to shove onto the gerbil! The purpleblood grumbled and griped as he cleaned chewed up bits of masks and capes off of the two of them. Steamtrain Express opted to wiggle out of the remains of the costume and start wandering away as if to make an escape but Cerpin caught the gerbil before it could reach freedom.

"C'mon, dream team, it's show time." He smirked, knowing that there was no way this could go wrong. Sure, maybe everything else had not gone perfectly but this time he knew would go smoothly. He walked towards the staging area and blinked at the amount of ice his gerbils had to cover to get from one side to the other. Wow, he felt a little bad for them. Maybe he should've gone for booties and sweaters after all. He wouldn't want to crawl across that much ice! But thankfully it wasn't him doing it and the gerbils seemed pretty tough.

Kneeling down, he gently put them on the ice. Cerpin knew he could not chance doing anything risky to possibly injure or kill his gerbils. Everything hinged on them competing in their top condition!

My name is: Amonee Brycer
I am in team: Green

I am exploring: K15
Points: 5

Seeing a small mountain range in the area, the two greenbloods began the trek to it. They lived on mountains, this was familiar to them compared to lakes and rivers. Not that other landscapes were bad, they just weren't used to them. And if they were trying to track a beast, it helped to know common features about the terrain and what was normal versus abnormal. Unfortunately, the walk had been more taxing on their bodies than Amonee had expected. He was an active troll, going on plenty of hikes in search of the next best scene to paint but... this one had left him winded and collapsing to his knees miserably on the snow.

"The view is impressive, isn't it?" It was pretty cool to look out and see a good chunk of Alternia's winter landscape, covered in a sweet white frosting. Snow was not the jadeblood's favorite weather nor was winter his season. But he did appreciate how delicate it looked falling from the sky over jagged rocky edges. The comparison and contrast were intriguing and he almost pulled out a notebook to sketch it. But he couldn't let himself get distracted, there was a beast to catch!

"I wonder what this thing eats? Do you think it eats trolls?" Amonee looked at Nucleo with mock fear and terror before erupting into silly laughter. They likely weren't in any danger!

He hoped.

Lorata had gone to a lot of trouble to get her gerbils into the costumes she'd so painstakingly put together for them. Or, well, okay, the costumes the company had been nice enough to leave out for contestants. She had put her all into making sure those little masks and capes looked nice, though. But despite all her hard work, it was clear her gerbils didn't appreciate it one little bit. Stheno had chewed every single piece of her costume to bits, for starters. She'd half thought Euryale was about to do the same, but instead the smart little gerbil had simply wiggled out of the things.

Frustrated, the seadweller started to grab another costume and try it again, but- Oh no! It was almost time for the games to start! She wouldn't be able to get them into anything else in time, much less keep them in it! Giving up on the costumes for now, she cooped up her team and hurried over towards the ice rink. A new problem had arrived though. She needed to get them waaay out there if she wanted the audience to be able to see them clearly.

She puzzled over it a moment, then slid them out onto the ice herself, hoping they'd reach.

Apparently following the trail up towards the plateau had been the best idea, though it had taken Etsali a bit of time to make her way up the to the top carrying all her equipment. Once she'd reached nice, level land, she'd taken a break to pull out a wrapped up jar of soup and taken a sip as she looked back down the way she'd come. Was it likely that a winterbeast might make the climb fairly often? It was certainly not impossible, and if all the signs she'd been following weren't just some other kind of beast, maybe she was right on the money here.

Considering that, she gave the flatlands a good once over, considering all the tracks and footprints there were to be found. Yeah, there was a lot of movement through this area. It seemed like the best idea, then, would be keep investigating around the plateau. For now, at least, until she found some clue that lead her off in another direction. Stretching, she moved around towards where the descent looked easiest and started the trek back down to the level ground beneath. With any luck, there would be a winter best waiting for her right down there.

A brooch of snow draped them, hiding any hints that life ever flourished here. Chiara rested a minute in her mad hike to make it to the hinted spot. It was tough going and she was already panting hard. Her breath lifted up to join the clouds that covered Alternia's twin moons. From here you would never know that one was pink and the other green. The cloud cover was just that strong. Chiara pulled out her map. All she had was some coordinates. She didn't know if she should try and find a cave, or go up to the peak of the enormous mountain. The blueblood unzipped a pocket of her trusty travel pack and pulled out a chewy bar. The buttery nuts in it reminded her of Lutrin. Briefly Chiara wondered if the brownblood was out in this, hunting for some supposed beast.
Chiara heaved a sigh and slung the bag back onto her back. She puffed out another breath, watching it float up into the sky and set her eyes on the prize. It was time to continue the trek. Chiara lifted one snow-shod foot after the other, dragging herself along the path her mind laid out.

Its not that Chiara disliked beasts, well okay it was that too, but she had difficulty putting the sweaters on the gerbils without having to touch them too much. Disgusting little things... trolls should not have such interest in gross animals. How could the rest of her race not see how pathetic and horrid all the animals they lived with, called "mommy" and "daddy" and let sleep right next to them. With a shudder Chiara finally got the little sweaters on and kinda looked at her pair. The two stared at the blueblood with their unintelligent beast eyes.
"Well come on, get out there already!" Chiara demanded, pointing out to the ice to direct the gerbil beasts. The two continued to stare at her with their unintelligent eyes. "Get get get! Dont expect me to help you with everything! If you can't even go walk out onto the ice by yourselves then how do you really expect to live in this world! Unbelievable!"Finally, with a sigh the troll was forced to push them out herself. The blueblood did so with a stick, all the better to avoid as much contamination as possible. Chiara watched the two, dressed in sweaters that matched their fur, flail out on the ice, and sighed. Well, that was the best she could do...

They were so completely cute, even Kolako felt her excitement bubble when thinking about how simply amazing though of them on the ice, together, paired up and enjoying themselves with their comfy sweaters. Kolako felt somewhat accomplished! She then realized that she somehow... Had to get them to the middle of the rink. Koko looked at her two cuties, looked at the far distance between her and the main area, then considered her choices. Or well, the only choice she was thinking of making, at least. She grabbed them lightly, pulling them into her chest and rubbing the top of each of their heads lightly before giving them both eskimo smooches on their noses. She giggled lightly before petting them softly, then put them back together and ended up pushing them softly in the direction of the event, hoping that was enough speed so they could arrive exactly at where they needed to be!

Austri quickly told Staglebro to hover around that area, but he had wings and wings made wind and wind blew away markings. This was NOT GOOD. "Stop, stop, Staglebro, YOU'RE MESSING UP EVERYTHING!" She complained, thumping his side until he finally settled somewhere nearby. Austri glared at him, long and hard. "You could've messed up the tracks!! We need to find that winterbeast!!" She exclaimed, poking him in the side. Staglebro merely stared. He really did not understand why she was so set on doing something so dumb. She wasn't even gonna get anything from it, anyways!! Austri huffed. He would never understand her ideals, or her desire for greatness. He'd always be dumb and "chill," like that was something worth living for. No, no, she needed to be amazing. She needed to be seen, fawned over. She was going to be a living role model for citizens, a helper, and proud of it. The Queen would recognize her one day. Then she'd get to the top. Whatever. She stalked away to look at the prints, eventually seeing that they had a path. Perfect. Onward!

My couple is: Li'l Cap (Spirited) and Pennii (Cute)

I choose option: 4
My current score is: +2 +3 ++2 = 7

Oh gosh! Oh gee! Luxara almost squee'd at her gerbs' look. Frankly, these little guys were perfect. Look at them, they got along so well and totally pulled off the snuggle look in those sweaters. D'awwww. Yeah, they were little winners. What a turn of events, coming all the way from the desert sweeps ago, to the forest, then bowling, then an ice rink. They must either be confused all the time or just expect their lives to be weird. It was the Luxara way! And, as far as she was concerned, so worth it.

Now, for the next part. Time to actually get them onto the ice. Tactics, tactics, tactics. Luxara checked out the distance between where they were and how Pennii and Li'l Cap would get to the center. It was a bit of a ways! Kind of a logistical error, there. Especially with the two already tied together...

She could just toss them over, she could probably wing that much, but what if they missed? What if they freaked out? Life was hard but didn't have to be that hard. But being gentle might not be enough...

So she decided to try spinning them, hoping that might get them over okay.

Ah-ha! Now she was getting somewhere. Luxara's search gave her some nice results, and it left her pretty pumped for the next excavation. Hair and migration habits. Not the clearest picture, but she was starting to get some idea of this thing. And tonight, she was going to check out the mountains for real this time (clearly the person writing this can't read maps). An actual vantage point, for real this go-around. Back to the snow! The hills would likely be very pretty in the winter weather. The birds and such might make for good ambiance. In the meantime, she wanted to see if any trees around there might have any marks. Or, more tracks on the ground. Heck, maybe evidence of diet. She just needed results.

At the same time, she wondered if anyone else was having luck; Luxara knew she wasn't the only one working on this, but she wasn't sure if she could share notes with anybody. In a competition like this, trust might be hard to come by, not factoring in how paranoid she had to be to begin with.

Maybe if she saw anyone else out in the field, though, she might try to have a chat.

The sweaters turned out to be a good choice, Tevini decided. The gerbils looked comfortable and most importantly, mobile. With no frills to get in the way they would be able to skate without hindrance. Comfort over fashion was her personal choice when it came to what to wear. The girl knew she wasn't exactly fashion forward nor her outfits attractive but what did it matter? She didn't feel the need to impress others with her looks and neither would her gerbils. They would impress everyone with their talent! It was time to show everyone just what thinkpaniniacs could do!

But hmmm how to start the show? The entrance was a little far and she wasn't sure if there was supposed to be some grand fanfare or announcement. Nervous, she didn't want to scare her gerbils either. She knew Steamtrain Express would be alright but what about The Milkman? That gerbil was very cute in it's little sweater, unnervingly so, but not very good at dealing with stress. Tevini knew better than to just throw her pair out there and decided to squat down and place them into the rink while reminding them to be careful! Oh gog she hoped it would go alright!

"Maybe! But I won't let it get you!" Nucleo laughed, teasing his companion. He was enjoying their trek up the mountain but noted Amonee was starting to fall behind a little. It was probably hard to walk in those shoes. Still, they had to carry on, it wasn't like they could just turn back after coming this far. Continuing further and further up the mountain, he winced at the cold wind and decided maybe he was the stupid one for wearing no coat. He should've gone and grabbed it from his booth but they'd been about to start and he hadn't wanted to hold Amonee up! Not when every second meant the winter beast could be getting further away!

"... Say Amonee?" The greenblood stopped and turned to look at his friend. They'd been walking for a while and he'd been working up the nerve to ask his friend a question. While the winterbeast hunt was fun and important, there was something else that had been weighing on Nucleo's mind. He didn't want to be weird by asking this but at the same time was really curious.

"What do you think of Elidae?" Was he being too obvious? Gah he didn't care, it was just a question about a friend! That they both knew. Yes nothing weird going on at all. In fact, perhaps he ought to ask about her too!

"And Frossa? We should go see their booths when we get back!"

Snug and warm, Janderbilt's extra fluff tuffed out in such a cute manner, Elidae could have cried. She sort of did. Eyes prickling with joy, she sat down and watched their little bodies wiggle together, cuddling and getting all warm and cozy. Wouldn't that be nice? To have a someone wear matching sweaters with and cuddle close to keep each other warm, with some hot cocoa? Mmm... coca sounded really good right now. She'd have to hit up The Nightly Grind again for some of that sweet, delicious drink. And that soup. Ah, she was daydreaming! It was time to get back to business.

"Alright, cuties! Time to get you on the ice!" After picking the two up with a gentle hand, Elidae looked across the ice, her lip pulling down in an unsure frown. Hmmm. How was she to get them across? Gently setting them down on the ice, she stared down at the bundle of joys with her hands on her hips. Maybe she could just...? Crouching down, she gently pushed them, but they just... spun. Elidae giggled while kind of twirling them around for a bit. "Teehee!"

The suspicions that the beast didn't even exist lingered in the back of her think pan, but her stubborn tendencies had her continue trekking through the wilderness, searching for something she didn't even know the appearance of. Dragondad, of course, continued on in a lazy saunter while her tiny legs carried her as fast as they could go.

Pulling out her map, Malice took a good look over it. The last two places she had gone to didn't have the results she needed. In fact, they came up shorter than expected. This was ridiculous. Why wouldn't it be there? She gritted her teeth. Looking up from her path, she noticed a tiny . Hot air brushed against her neck. Lip twitching, the blueblood child slowly turned around, desperately wishing it was her lusus simply playing one of his dumb tricks on her.

      It wasn't.

Eyes widening in horror, Malice realized she stepped right into a family of grizzlbeasts, one of the parents standing directly behind her. And it was huge.

At least Snake had been sensible enough about the ordeal, not making a mess of the costumes like Rocket had. "Gross, dude, get that out of your mouth," Leeroi added, trying to pry Rocket's mouth open to get the mask out. "You're gonna choke on that ******** thing, just let me have it!" He stared hard, squeezing them slightly, trying to imbue them with the warrior's rage that overflowed within himself. If he had to lend them his own strength, then so be it.

"Go kick some a**!" Leeroi yelled, then wound up his throwing arm. With a clean overhand move, he threw the pair of gerbils into the ring, laughing recklessly. They had lived with him long enough to expect it, probably.

"Are we safe?" Stemma asked, continuing to check the area. "The grizzlebeast is gone now, right?" She asked, tugging on Krampa's horns. Her eyes were wide and nervous. "I didn't like that, Krampa, I didn't like it at all," She said, hugging her lusus close. "That was really scary..." Stories were one thing. Reading about something in a book and actually getting chased by it were two very different things. Stemma wasn't sure if she liked that.

The lusus turned up, motioning to his charge. Would you like to turn back and go home? The lusus seemed unsure in his own right. Though he knew he could defend himself, he didn't want his darling girl getting in harm's way.

Stemma whined, sitting upright. She gave a harrumph, thinking to herself. "Maybe... Maybe if it happens again," She decided. She had to prove she was brave and capable! Then she could make Krampa proud and finally show off her eye. So even if it was a game, it was a big step for her.

"Let's go here today," Stemma suggested, pointing out the spot on her map. "Ill be extra careful to listen for beasts this time." She added, sitting straight and proud, peering out into the distance.

I choose option: 4) Spinning!
My current score is: 2

The previous night's failure had come as a shock to Lutrin. Thankfully, it had also knocked some sense into her. Gone was the beret, the moustache, the accent. Gone was the fashionista. Now it was just Lutrin at the controls, and while some oddness was guaranteed, at least Alternia had been spared several sweeps of terrible method acting and offensive character choices.

Getting down to business, Lutrin spent as much time as she could outside her booth preparing her rodents for battle. Dancing. Battle dancing. Actually that was a great idea. She would have to mention it to Chiara later. During the intermission, gerbils could be trained to fight dance. Anyway...

There was little to be salvaged of the costumes, but Lutrin was not concerned. A steady regimen of training would be sure to put her gerbils on top. And if not that, at least they would have fun. Setting them down, Lutrin wiped a tear from her eye. "It's all up to you now..." She sniffed. And then, before the gerbils could make their grand entrance, she decided to offer them a little bit of help.

"There you go! Wheeeeee!"

The gerbils were sent spinning out onto the ice.

Alifax was not very invested in this, although he was pretty sure he'd equipped his gerbil with a cape, and not...all of this. Whatever. They were now not wearing any costumes, which basically put him exactly where he'd wanted to be without his having to break the rules or anything. This was great. "Are there no...walls?" Alifax asked, skeptic. He didn't want either of his future fancy highblood dinners to escape. He'd spent so much...uh. Time? On them?

Ugh, whatever. The stupid string could act as a really long leash, right? He tied another length on hastily and then put the gerbils down on the edge. There was actually no contemplation at all of any other methods. Why bother?, Alifax had thought. He wanted to win, but this kind of s**t wasn't really his forte. He was just planning on milking as much profit out of this as he could. "They're moving," he said to the NummCorp employee watching him. They sure were. That counted as dancing, right? This was probably as close as these things could get to dancing.

He'd already spent way more time doing this than he'd thought he'd need. Why couldn't he just leave them here and pick them up later? It'd be NummCorp who'd be liable if something happened to them, then.

Grizzlebeasts. Wonderful.

Grizzlebeasts usually ignored trolls or ran away from them, so Alifax really had no idea what had happened to piss them off. Probably NummCorp. Nummcorp was the answer to everything here. But whatever - he wasn't going to just stay here while they were pissed off. Nah, he was gonna go to the conveniently-located NummCorp tent, just next to the grizzlebeast habitat.

Actually, on second thought, this was stupid.

He found himself a nice cave about halfway to the probable next spot on the stupid map and lit himself a ******** fire in a convenient hearth. So far there had been NummCorp tents wherever there were highlighted spots, so he figured he didn't even need to pick up a copy of the map in their tent. This was literally just a weird guessing game anyway, since it'd been several nights and still no one had bothered to explain to him what a winterbeast was. And he had portable slime requisitions.

In the evening he picked himself up and walked for a long while, glancing occasionally at the compass he'd been given. And the map. Generally the points were fairly spread out, so...

Maybe if he just walked north. Yep - there was a tent right there. He glanced at the supplies and then went to check out whatever the hell they wanted him to see.

Tourism.

Ephias hated tourism. There was nothing so soul-leeching and degrading to the troll species. The gaggles of crowds, the photography, the overpriced goods, the insensitivity to culture, the under-handed sales tactics... The salamanders at least were worth seeing. He related somewhat to their dead, vacant stares. They knew his pain. After all, they had to deal with it every night. He pitied them truly, from the very bottom of his pump biscuit.

After getting some directions Ephias headed back east, retracing his steps through the wilderness. It felt like he was making little progress, zigzagging across the map. He had found a few patches of suspicious hair at the lake, but that was it. He was beginning to suspect that this whole thing might have been a wild honkbird chase, especially considering his last coordinates.

Somehow it wouldn't surprise him to learn that the whole thing had been a hoax.

The ground gradually became firmer beneath his feet, and after an hour of walking he left the last of the marshlands behind. The terrain was still sparse of any trees and out in the open he felt exposed, but even so he was glad for the change of pace. Literally. Slogging through the muddy snow had not only been exhausting but time-consuming.

Suddenly, he heard the clatter of rocks from up ahead. It came from the ridge of the plateau. Ducking down and drawing his shears, Ephias crept forwards. Ten paces, twenty, thirty, forty, around the corner and...

"Etsali?"
