Alyx watched, calmly, collecting information. When Rota's dialogue would shift, he would look slightly toward the apparently active side. This was.. Disturbing, to say the absolute least. Was this some sort of game? Or was something worth taking seriously? If the player was seriously mentally ill, was the world of ALICE a safe place for them to be stomping around in? Sure, in here, they couldn't hurt anyone. But Alyx was no medical professional. On the other hand.. Was this something that was even possible in the system?

It was privileged information, but one of the reasons that latency and lag don't play significant roles in the game is because of a built-in storage cache and delay. What's happening in the game is actually happening a few seconds after the command reaches the server. You see, in an effort to level the playing field, high end users and low end users are playing on slightly different timelines. When multiple people enter the same instance or begin interacting, the lowest connection speed is used to determine the speed of the group, but in order to keep reactions and interactions in sync, the thoughts and behaviors of a player are stored for a short time, and timestamped. A slow connection player might have an insignificant cache, while a high-end user will have a large one. Basically, your actions are sent to the server and stored based on their interactionary behaviors.

It works like this: the low speed user, --Sachi, let's say-- queues up an action: she is going to slap a player with a hard lined, top end system, called Kirito. Well, with the large amounts of data at play, the system needs to make sure that these two are interacting fairly. To do this, the actions performed by Kirito are received by the system, buffered, stored, and sent to Sachi, whose system relays the information to her. This effectively leaves Kirito in stasis, suspended in action until the simulation can progress. Sachi then reacts to the behavior, aiming a slap at Kirito. When the system gets the information from Sachi, it combines it with Kirito's interaction, and sends the data to him and waits for his input to come back, which will take less time than it does for Sachi's to do so, which will be run at almost full speed. This is repeated several times, until enough simulation is gathered to run for several seconds to several minutes of gameplay. The players don't experience this lag because their experience is altered in small ways. One of the most common is to manipulate the flow of time during non-important events, like conversations or relocations, and dilate the experience. A walk that would normally take a minute now takes two, but the players' experience is slowed as well, to condense that into a one minute memory. Effectively, your consciousness is slowed by 50% to allow the server to physically buffer itself. In the alpha prototypes, experimentation had been performed in simply 'blinking' the user's experience on and off to create the de-sync, effectively turning a person's mind off until it was convenient to turn it back on, but in the event that the system lost power suddenly (the combination of a catastrophic failure of the two reserve power supplies and the main power supply simultaneously, or of a widespread failure of the hardware in general) there was concern that people would be afraid when the news got hold of it that their mind's would be lost forever.

That's not how it works. Basically, it's deja vu. Your mind never stops, it just gets caught Wakjakaga'ing itself for a bit. You would wake up and feel kinda like you had just forgotten something that you had been about to say. Reactionary, pathological children. The system had to be put on this new program, just to try to appease the potential PR nightmare fearmongering that was sure to come.

This means that while the real-world action may be accomplished by the high-end user a minute before the scene plays out on the server, both players have an equal opportunity to react on a level playing field. You get no advantage for having a more powerful computer, because the server basically slows everyone down organically to make them behave.

The other countermeasure, however, is what has to be done in the even of a disconnect or link-death. If the amount of play stored on the server is completely run out, the system runs approximations as best it can to cope. When a player's connection is lost, and the simulation is being prepared, the system uses readings and weighted algorithms to determine the player's probable behavior, with each character having their own personality evaluation.

When a player goes link dead and the server is running the queued processes, you are talking and interacting with the player, who had performed these actions before their system had disconnected. Hopefully, they would reconnect before the buffer ran out, but if not, the system could take over for a short time, performing basic functions in an effort to keep things fluid. If the system got to a point where a decision would have to be made that had hard implications or put the character at risk, it would enter emergency mode, and an admin would have to make the call, or the system would simply pull the character from the simulation and keep moving. Due to these safeguards, people dropping from sessions was almost eliminated, and visible lag was nigh unheard of.

But could the system make a mistake, and begin attempting to take control of the character while the player was still in connection? If it was possible, then it needed to be addressed quickly. Talk about PR nightmares. Brainwashing and mind control are not things the public media shies away from. At the very least, the service being paid for does not involve either of those things in its list of perks.

He decided to probe. Gather information for a bug report. He twitched his fingers infinitesimally, accessing his personal console in incognito mode, telling it to backup and route the information of this simulation to his personal server for storage.

"What are you talking about? Rota, are you alright? I'm sure you understand my concern. What is happening?"

Rota sighed. Alyx was understandably freaked out by the whole ordeal. Who wouldn't be? He calmed himself down, but still maintained control of his body. In fact, the grey left his face in a knowing way. This was going to take a lot of explaining. "I'm gonna trust you for a little bit here, Player. I have no choice but to in this situation." He sat himself on his anvil so he wouldn't collapse when he had to take control back again. He then looked Alyx in the eyes. "I'm not fine. In fact I'm less than fine. I am the Hammer that recognises that someone else has been doing the swinging. I am the sword that cuts before its wielder slashes their opponent. This tower is a game, I am an avatar, I have a Player, and I have will that 'I am not supposed to have'." How had his life come to this? "After we seperated the first night when you saved me from that first boar, I fought a Bear once. When I saw it, I felt a fear from outside me saying that 'he's going to die' referring to me. I yelled at it, telling it to have confidence in my abilities. I thought I was crazy. I thought I was crazy for having blackouts during sleep times rather than actual dreams. These exteriror feelings slowed down, but came to a head when we fought Bakugami."

Rota began to smile a bit "Since I made it, I had always had Abyssian's voice in my head, but Abyssian was benevolent. We worked together." Rota's eyes hardened in anger. "But The Demon Iron Greatsword was different. During that fight it hungered for blood, actively dominating my mind and turning me into some sort of rage beast, as I'm sure you noticed. That was a typical mental domination not unknown to Blacksmiths that make soul blades. You sometimes wind up with a blade that has a different personality than yours, and they clash. it didn't help that I was finishing someone's work rather than building it from scratch. Player, now you tell your side. I'll wait for my cue."

The Player resumed control, Rota's hair and eyes greying completely. "Hello. We have never been formally introduced. I am Joseph, Rota's Player. I am sure that Rota will continue to call me 'Player' out of spite, though. What Rota has said up to this point is true. I really did fear for his death, and he directly scolded me for it. I thought I was insane. That was until we fought Bakugami. When the Demon Iron Greatsword dominated Rota's mind into performing the Twin Blade attack without any light, my controls were locked up, and a degrading error band was streaking across my vision. I had no control over the situation and could do nothing but watch as the technique was performed. After he regained his senses, and you told us to leave, I was able to take control and say that we would...But the bands returned. Rota, somehow, has autonomy that a videogame avatar should not typically have. Neither of us know why, or if it is dangerous. Rota, if you will demonstrate again?"

Rota's color returned to it's 'spliced' version. "This state requires a tremendous amount of will. I'm surprised I was able to even do it in the shape I'm in. That's why I had to sit down."

Player nodded Rota's head. "Yes. Even now, error bands streak across my vision. In this state, nothing I do can be done without going through Rota first. Think of my real world movements as a 'strong suggestion'. Could I OVERPOWER that will? Perhaps, but we both know how stubborn this half-demon can be. He also cannot control my physical body, only his own. He has, embarissingly enough, tried."

Rota tensed "This one-way bullshit is pissing me off. It's not fair!" he sighed, and collected himself. "In any case, what Croire told you about Abyssian(Schism) is true, but not exact. Abyssian became the name of the blade as a whole. Now there are two souls in that blade: Selena; the soul of Abyssian from the beginning to now, and Rath; The soul of The Demon Iron Greatsword. With Selena in place, Rath shouldn't be able to dominate my mind anymore, but Player will still try and fail to."

Joseph sighed. "I know we are asking a lot of understanding from you, because these are some out there claims, but you have to believe us. We thought that you, of all people, deserved to know."

Alyx waited patiently for Rota... and 'Player/Joshua' to be done talking. It was a strange story to be told. Let alone to believe. But Alyx was, if nothing else, able to roll with punches. The game enforced strict roleplaying rules in the public forum, but things were relaxed in private. If this was just a character that Rota was to be playing in private, then it wouldn't change much in the world, except for possibly informing his decisions, but if this was a serious development, then it raised several questions that were outside of Alyxandeyr's purview. Was this something that was even possible? Even if it was possible, were there not safeguards against it?

...Or maybe there were. Alyx thought about his duties as an administrator. He reported bugs and glitches, and handled the fallout when those things arose. In the event that something unforeseen did come up, Alyx was meant to deal with it. For some reason, no one had noticed this as an issue, and he hadn't been dispatched to handle it, so it either wasn't an issue, it was an issue and nobody knew what to do yet, or they just hadn't noticed it. Of the three, the first seemed most likely, but the other two could not be discounted.

As it was, Alyx would have to research the topic further. For some reason, the idea of filing a bug report on this was not an attractive option. If it turned out to be true... What would they do to Rota? Or to Joshua? The corporation was not a malevolent force, but weird things happen when free will comes into play, and even more when money is at stake. A settlement and a non-disclosure agreement would be standard, but that would still mean that Rota would most likely be dismantled. Studied first, assessed, and then dissected. It only made sense. When a bug occurs, you examine it, attempt to understand what it does and the mechanisms by which it functions, and then you take apart the code that makes it function, to better understand how to remove and patch it. In the very off and away chance that this was real? He would be losing his swordbrother, and giving him to people whose interest and occupation are to ensure that he doesn't exist in the medium that currently houses him.

To be sure, though, there was no option to dealing with it. That was plain and simple in the now. Roleplaying is a game. ALICE is a game. The storytelling that exists within the medium is give and take. A group effort, and only the player can decide what to put forth. At that point, it can be left alone or it can be run with. For the sake of the game, progress is made. And the progress makes the game. Alyx' thoughts and worries aside, the game and being a human being both demanded the same actions.

~So what are you going to do?~ using the OOC channel seemed appropriate. ~The two of you have to agree on that, at least, to move forward. Have you reported the issue?~

Rota's right eye looked at his left. He had no way of knowing what Player had done outside of this game, and he didn't trust him as far as he could kick him when it came to his freedom.

Joseph sighed, and rose Rota's left hand to rest on his left temple, his ear being surrounded by his thumb and index finger, and his pinky curling around the eye socket. Rota's left eye was closed, Joseph was thinking/ bracing himself fro the rest of this conversation. ~No. You are the first anything that I have told. I haven't even sent an error report.~

Rota was slightly surprised by this. "Really?"

Joseph nodded Rota's head. He was surprised how much Rota was listening to his influences, but he supposed that Rota was allowing the showmanship for Alyx's sake. ~Of course. You see it all the time in Sci-Fi where the thing that isn't supposed to think and feel DOES, so they try to destroy it to understand how it works.~ Joseph clenched Rota's left hand hard. Thankfully, Rota shouldn't have felt that or else he would have gotten pissed. ~I would be devastated. This is the first time any Rota has been outside of my control, and he's had memories of things that I have never made. You could argue things about whatever is doing this taking his bio and expanding it, but even NAMES are lining up!~

Rota lifted his right hand to silence his lesser half. "Irrelevant and too much too soon. Regardless of any of this, I still want to get to the top of this tower. Beat this game. Player feels somewhat obligated to me since he's made other MEs he's written into failures."

Joseph started to protest ~That's not-~

Rota's hand raised again. "Enough! I'm not a virus so I'm not something Malignant in this game world. I have NOTHING to fear from the Admins. I'm not trying to destroy this world, just exist in it in a slightly unintended way. If Player won't send the bug report, I want YOU to send it Alyxandeyr."

Joseph bulged Rota's left eye and looked at his right. ~WHAT?!~

Alyx' brow furrowed slightly. ~I believe that Joseph has some fair points. From a design perspective, unintended features are dismantled and analyzed. A bug report would bring to the attention of those who would be doing the analyzing that there was something at all to analyze. Never minding the ethical questions of what to do with you, yourself, Rota, this game was intended to be played, not watched. From a producer/consumer standpoint, you are a game-breaking defect. If the flaw is inherent in you, then it would be in the interest of their bottom line that you ceased to exist, and that nothing like you ever arose again. From the prospective perspective, the formation of an artificial intelligence with self-awareness in a medium where such things are not intended show evolution of the science. They might sell you off to the highest bidder. Military contracts would be incredibly interested in an AI that could build itself from a nondescript seed.

But to be sure, the end result of almost every course of action is that you are taken out of control of the player and made into a specimen for examination. I'm not sure that you come out of any situation in which we bring this to the attention of the ones in power alive.

Although it is rather strange, if something like this has happened, that they haven't already addressed it. They are generally rather hands-on, and keep tabs on everything that happens. That makes it all the more likely that they have noticed.. What they would do next is an entirely unknown variable.~

He was speaking to himself as much as to the others. The idea that the glitches and bugs hadn't been noticed was an unlikely one, given the oversight that the game has been being given. So what was the explanation that Rota would still be here? Omitting, of course, the possibility that there was nothing out of the ordinary happening.

~All that said, why would you want me to sign your potential death warrant?~

Rota steeled himself. "I don't want to die. I can't think of a single person who thinks differently, at least not in their heart of hearts."

Joseph kept the left eye chameleon'd on Rota's right, agitated and scared for the future of his better half ~Then-!~

Rota cut off Player. he knew EXACTLY where that line of thought was going. The BLIND could see it. "I would do it myself, but I can't trust player to let me despite being able to vaguely control my own destiny like this. The one thing Player and I agree on regarding my soul is that you are the only person either of us trusts to take me out if I am truly a threat. So I leave my fate in your hands. Submit the report, don't submit it, or vaguely tell them about some of the glitches that happened during the Bakugami fight I don't care. If you think it's for the best to keep it secret, I'm behind you. If you think I'm a threat, either we fight it out now like men or you submit the full report." Rota then stood up from the anvil and grabbed Abyssian, flourishing the blade and shouldering it hard. His vision was popping, but he kept his eyes focused on Alyx and made sure to not show any weakness. "Now be a good boy, Player, and ******** off for a bit. The big boys have more to talk about than existential quandaries about souls."

Joseph sighed, and toggled OOC off, returning Rota's grey bits to their proper color

Alyx nodded. ~I'll need time to determine how best to proceed on that front.~

That said, it was work for a later date. Nothing could be done about it right now. "But.. For the time being, what exactly are we going to do? We have miles to go in every direction. Which way should we turn our focus? I highly doubt that we will run into much trouble, no matter what we decide."

Alyx wondered just how overpowered they really were at this point. Unbelievably, to be sure, but how many floors ahead were they? How long would it be before they were even slightly challenged again.

Alyx smiled softly to himself. Only one way to find out.

Rota smiled as his vision began to stabilize. His body still hated his very existence, but he was past the point of listening to his body. "I did a LOT of thinking while reforging Abyssian, and I couldn't get that little witch out of my head." His voice was still wrecked. Sure, the odd ember was starting to escape his mouth, but his throat was still hoarse and ragged. The healing process was going to be a long time coming. Rota shrugged. "Aside from that, I found a new section of the Gloomwood called 'The Goldenwood'. I...MIGHT have released something...s that were meant to stay sealed forever." He sighed and rolled his left shoulder, his arm feeling like a sledgehammer was taken to it. "I leave the choice to you."

Alyx thought back to the dungeon, and had to agree. "I think you are right." He looked to the floor, considering what was in store for them in that hellhole. "We absolutely cannot neglect that." He rolled his shoulders and adjusted his armor. "How much time do you need to prepare for our rescue mission? I imagine you're going to need a moment to get back on your feet."

Rota smirked as he buried Abyssian into the ground beside him "Are you kidding me?" He accessed his inventory and equipped his Bakugami set, the golden shards forming into existence around his body until every snarling boar could be seen. He grabbed Abyssian by the hilt and slammed them into the sword catch on his right pauldron. "I've been preparing for too long. I'm finally ready to save her. Not the BEST idea for someone in his condition, but he was not about to feel vulnerable anymore. Someone needed him.

The Gloomking nodded, rolling his shoulders in his pauldrons, shifting his shield on his arm, and clapping Rota on the shoulder. "Very well. Shall we get going, then?" He turned to the door and began the trek to the cave where they had last seen the Witch go. He knew that they had grown, and were more powerful than could have been imagined at the time. But he wondered about what challenges they would face trying to free the girl from her prison. With any luck, they would be able to overcome the challenges that loomed ahead. Hopefully they would not arrive too late. Alyx didn't know how he would live with himself if he had lost her in the time that it had taken to prepare.

Rota winced and drew in breath sharply. While he had been able to brace himself for the gesture, the pressure was still a shock to his system. Doubt began to fill his mind as he turned to follow Alyx. With each step, the battered demon's vision distorted and his muscles threatened to shut down. He was beginning to regret even thinking that he could do this right now, but his own suffering was irrelevant in the face of the former failures. He turned to his 'children' and looked at his 'daughter'. "Croire, I need you to come with me." He saw her nod, and begin to follow. He would have a proper discussion with her later about what had happened, but one crisis at a time.
