"Well!" Vesna said, trying to find the silver lining, "We all got to know each other a lot better, right?" She looked up at the headstone looming over them. "And I bet Father Patrick hasn't had this much company in a long time, you know...?"
"On the other hand," Lorenzo said, "It'd be nice to find this clover before someone sees us all pawing on top of his grave and assumes the worst of us." He had untied his ceremonial mask and hidden it in his backpack, but the dark cloak still stood out like a sore thumb.

"That's very true," Claire said with a smile. "Both sides of it." She rolled up her sleeves to continue sorting through the clover. "But I am glad that we got such an amenable group, breaking of laws here aside." She was grateful for that, and grateful for the two meetings she had already lined up nicely for Lorin. Claire was bubbling with excitement at the prospect of introducing her small Frei to her three companions, and in her preoccupation while sitting at the base of the statue, she might have missed it, had she not glanced over at the compass in Vesna's hands, which continued to point dead center towards the statue.
She followed its course with her eyes and spotted it - a perfect four-leaf clover, sitting innocently in plain sight as though it had been there all along and they had been too blind to see it. Another glance towards the compass to be sure, and she swallowed dryly, pulling her hands away. It was far enough from them that she had not brushed it (at least she hoped not).
"Rhedefre, get a bottle," she croaked out. "I think I found it."

As the little four leaf clover was plucked from the ground, something else caught Claire's eyes. A glint in the dirt just right next to the clover. It was just hiding among numerous clover leaves. Upon removing the dirt in the area, she would discover that it was a gold coin. The coin looked ancient, with a man's side profile imprinted on it, much like those from Roman statues and wall carvings. Is this perhaps... an ancient Roman gold coin? This could worth a small fortune if it was authenticated and sold to the right people.
What luck!
Fel Essence #69 Truly Lucky Clover
Deeply rooted in the Irish culture, and widely believed all over the world, it is said that finding a four-leaf clover by accident would bring you good luck. Even if this believe had yet to be proven. But what if there is a four-leaf clover that truly really brings you good luck? The past owners of this four-leaf clover would say so. Winning lottery, getting the girl of your dreams, bag full of cash dropping from the sky. A lot of good things had happened to everyone that owned this little four-leaf clover. With no consequences either. Unlike as depicted in movies, no misfortune befall these people after their good luck. The person that picked up the bag of cash had since invested the money into a successful business. The four-leaf clover truly brings only fortune.
However, for some reason the clover couldn't stay long in someone's possession either. Sooner rather than later, it will switch hands. Whether by accidentally dropping it or leaving it back somewhere, the owner will always lose it. It was as if it's saying that one cannot have good luck forever.

At Claire's exclamation, Cesc raised his eyebrows and came forward, swinging the backpack around to extract a vial. He sank low and bent, his hands brushing aside the other clovers and dirt to gingerly extract the clover. This damn thing! How was it so hard to find, and yet...
… well, it did look incredibly ordinary. And one day it would make a living, breathing Raevan, like him. It was incomprehensible. But wasn't that what fel essences were?
As he did, he saw the coin, and picked it up in his other hand. "Finders, keepers," he said to Claire, smiling as he held it out to her. It was like a reward, like a video game!
He held up the vial, looking at Vesna, and moved it laterally to make sure the needle kept it in its sights. "Well, this is it. One down! So a compact for Vesna and off we go to wherever is next?"
Rhedefre put the vial gently in the backpack and clapped his hands to get the dirt off of them, and then looked at Vesna expectantly for pictures of what she wanted him to make.

"We did it!" Vesna exclaimed, floating up to standing height again and stretching. "Wherever we go next, I hope it's way cuter than this place!"
"This place isn't bad," Lorenzo said, brushing the dust off his knees, "We're just not supposed to be here." He took the compass from Vesna and held it as she took out her phone to show Cesc a bunch of different pictures of the compact.
"Only make it if you want to," said Vesna, feeling a little self conscious about asking for presents now that the prospect of going somewhere new was somewhat alleviating her boredom. "I mean, I can always order a toy one online if it's a lot of effort."
"With whose money?" Lorenzo asked suspiciously.
"Yours!" Vesna replied, taking back the compass now that she was done with her phone. "You said it was very practical, right?"
She paused and looked at the coin Cesc had handed Claire, and added, "And it's not fair that I get something and Claire gets something and you don't, so I'll give you something, too." She took off another of her phone charms and handed it to Cesc.

Claire sighed away the tension she had been feeling at their fruitless search as Cesc put the clover in its bottle. "Thank goodness." She was halfway through standing up when the coin was offered to her, and she took it in a state of surprise, staring at it in her palms. "Thank you," she replied, turning it this way and that in her hands. "But I think this would be better off shared between us, don't you think?" It certainly looked very valuable, and they had all worked towards finding the Essence - it only felt right to divvy up the spoils. "Once this search is all taken care of, I'll look into this." She held the coin up and then placed it in her pocket, cozy behind her phone until they got back to the car.
"Again, at least we were here before dark," she added to Vesna's comment with a chuckle. "But odds are, whatever our next destination is, it will be for the better." She smiled as the rusalka Frei plucked another charm from her own phone and offer it to Cesc. "To answer your earlier question, while Lorin doesn't have a phone, we've been in talks of getting him a Nintendo 3DS so he and Cadi can play. If you have one, perhaps you can show him the ropes?" She laughed lightly again and then happened to glance down at her watch - time was getting on. With another cursory glance to the compass, she noticed it was not reacting at the graveyard any longer. "Ah, but I think we should get moving towards our next destination. Shall we, gang?" And with that, she started the trek back towards the vehicles.

Safely and comfortably tucked back in their cars, the group was wandering Durem aimlessly for about half an hour or so before the compass reacted again. It happened in an area where a lot of hipster cafes were located.
Once on foot, the needle brought them to a large Italian cafe at the corner of a busy street - Cafe Creme. It had an outdoor area, fenced off with low black fences with cute flower pots hanging on them. It was a lively place, filled with people enjoying their afternoon tea or coffee, and servers walking in and out, carrying trays filled with delicious bread type food and drinks. The lovely smell of baked bread and hot coffee wafted out of the inviting double oak doors.
There was no mistaking it, the needle is pointing into the cafe. What a change of venue, from a quiet graveyard where no one is around to a bustling cafe where even finding a seat might be a problem.

"Are you sure?" Cesc asked Claire with a half-grin as she offered to split the coin's value. He wasn't sure if it would actually even have much of one; he felt nothing from it in particular, so he had no information regarding its provenance. As he spoke, he put the essence away in his bag and then shrugged it back onto his shoulders. "You can keep it as a keepsake of our time with Father Pat here, if you want."
He was surprised at Vesna's gesture, his eyebrows lifting and his smile brightening as he took the small charm. He accepted it with both hands, turning it over in his fingers. "This is adorable! You'll have to show me how to put it on my phone later, yeah?"
"Now, let's see…" he continued, fishing out his phone again and googling the compact. He showed the image to Vesna for approval and then asked for her to hold it out where he could see. He wet his lips and pulled them over his teeth, studying the picture, and then made a motion like he was elbowing something.
Accordingly, there was a sharp cracking sound, and there was a splinter of darkness behind him, like he'd elbowed glass. He turned, taking one of the splinters and pulling it easily, and for a brief moment there was a true blackness behind him where the light had been. He didn't pay it much mind, looking down with interest at the glow in his hand, his fingers smoothing over it like clay. Once or twice he looked at the picture again and continued working, asking questions as he went--this good? This size okay?--then he held up the finished product for Vesna's inspection. He snapped it open so she could see the mirrored part of it.
Although fully gold, it did look like the pictures he'd consulted, and fit nicely into her hand. It had a smooth, pleasing texture, just faintly warm.
"Look okay? If it gives you any guff or it doesn't look right, I can change whatever, so don't be shy about asking!" said Rhedefre, nodding. He rubbed his jaw with his knuckles, laughing. "It's easiest to make really small stuff. You can just steal a ray of light instead of breaking anything, but you saw--light regenerates fast, if you ever want anything else."
--
He fell back into conversation with Claire in the car as they left, asking more about her life and about Lorin as they followed Lorenzo and Vesna aimlessly. He liked Claire, more as he spent time with her; she was easy to talk to and down to earth, and he liked her sense. Finally, as they stopped at the cafe and exited, Cesc began to laugh.
"This is a little more my speed!" He said, rubbing his hands together as they entered the busy establishment. "I might have to try a pastry, see what the competition is like."
Spotting Vesna and Lorenzo, he lifted a hand in a wave. "Better than the cemetery, huh? Where's the needle saying to go?"

Pleased that she could give him something in return, Vesna nodded, pulling out a four pack of adhesive charm attachers. "I can do it now! Just stick one of these to the back of your phone and loop the strap through, then you can have as many charms as you want."
She boggled at Cesc as he performed his magic. Although she lived with Lorenzo, he never performed magic in front of her, and her own magic was hardly ostentatious. This was the first time she had seen any magic, and moreover, it was being performed to make a cosplay item for her.
"Cool," she breathed quietly, and then, when she realized it was all over, she repeated: "Cesc!! That was so totally cool!"
"That's good!" she said eagerly, as he asked her how it looked. "I can hot glue some glass stones into the cover later for accuracy." She took perhaps the most expensive Sailor Moon cosplay item in existence with a cheerful smile. "Thanks! I'll take extra good care of it." _________________________
In the car with Lorenzo, she examined the compact, turning it over and over in her hands. Out of the corner of his eye, Lorenzo glanced at her, and said, "Are you watching the compass?"
"Yee-esss," Vesna replied, glancing up at the compass for half a moment. Doing a double take, she said, "Oh! It's doing something!"
It took them a little maneuvering, but once they parked and got out of the car, Vesna's face lit up into a grin. "This is more like it!" she exclaimed, and then realized, "My first cafe! Lorenzo, can I choose something for you to eat??"
"After we find the fel essence," Lorenzo said, pulling her gently over to where Cesc and Claire were waiting.
"Then let's go! The compass saaaaays... There!" Vesna pointed in the direction of Cafe Creme, one of the cuter cafes in the busy neighborhood. Discreetly, Lorenzo checked the compass to make sure she wasn't lying for her own benefit.

As Lorenzo and Vesna took the lead, Claire took the drive at leisure. Cesc was a wonderful conversation partner and picked up the threads he had started on the last drive, to which she eagerly responded. She was very excited to talk about Lorin and doted on the small details, even more pleased to have such a receptive companion for them. Most pleasing of all was the steadily growing list of people with whom she could share him, especially fellow Raevans. She knew that would be very important for him.
The street that Lorenzo's car turned down was decidedly busy, and Claire leaned over the steering wheel to get a better look as they slowed. Many small businesses lined the streets, mainly restaurants and cafes, and at this time in the afternoon, most of them were packed with the after school and work crowds. Finding parking was going to be a task... at least, until a car slid out of the curbside parking in front of them and merged into the street. 'Thank goodness,' Claire thought as she signaled and pulled in. She climbed out a beat after Cesc, wrangling her keys to lock the door, and joined him on the sidewalk to wait for Lorenzo and Vesna. The nearby cafes were certainly packed to the gills, but it was such a change of venue from the graveyard that Claire, too, felt a little more at ease. She laughed easily at the enthusiasm of the two Raevans.
"I think it sounds like a wonderful idea," she agreed, and she pressed a hand to her stomach, remembering all the wasted treats from the party that she did not get a chance to try. "But Lorenzo's right: work before pleasure, after all." Vesna, with compass as her guide, directed their attention towards Cafe Creme, and Claire looped her purse over her shoulders more securely (it looked as though they were going to be wading through quite a crowd, and it would do no good to lose her car keys). "In we go, then - lead on, Vesna." She smiled encouragingly at the young Frei to lead the pack into their next search.

As they made their way into the busy cafe, Cesc was having a hard time focusing on their quest. Having worked at a bakery since his birth, Rhedefre was very keen on seeing other similar establishments, seeing what they had to offer and what made them unique. This cafe was much bigger than Vermillion, and certainly was bustling just now with activity.
The stag's ears swiveled toward the counter and he looked with a critical eye at their display case--those croissants did not look golden brown and flaky and delicious, and although the treats were Italian instead of French--an inferior buttercream, let's be real--Cesc felt relatively confident that Vermillion's offerings were better. Still, the Italian confections did look good, and he never had really learned how to make a first-rate tiramisu; people seemed to love those, and--
Wait, hold up, stop. Cesc refocused after a moment, looking around the busy cafe. There were lunch companions and dates and all waiters holding glasses of parfaits and cakes and teas. So far, everything seemed normal enough, but then again, it had at the cemetery, as well. He spotted a table that had just been discarded, crumbs still littering its surface. "Does someone want to take the table while we go up to the front and check things out?" he asked. "Or does the needle have us pointed in another direction entirely?"

"I'll take the table," Lorenzo offered. While he had fit in at the graveyard, more or less, he stuck out like a sore thumb in the trendy café, and a few of the customers shot him curious glances as he sat down and spread his cape over the chair next to him. He either didn't notice, or was used to it, but Vesna definitely was not, and as she realized what was going on, she looked away, embarrassed.
"I-I'll go scope things out with Cesc," she said, looking at the compass. "It seems like we're supposed to be here!" She focused on the cute pastries and distracted herself. The pastries on Vermillion's Instagram had looked cuter, but these were real and right in front of her. Even the air in the café smelled sweet, it was totally different from looking at cakes online like she had been for the past few months.
"Do you want to pick a pastry for me, Vesna?" Lorenzo asked.
"Can I??" asked Vesna.
He handed her some money. "If you want, but just get me a latte, too, all right?"
"Latte," repeated Vesna conscientiously. "I wonder if they'll do latte art?"

"I'll stick with Lorenzo here," Claire added with a nod. "You two go scope out what's good, I'll grab something when we're done with our escapades here." She glanced down at the lone empty table and reached for a napkin, wiping the surface clean - with it this busy, beggars could not afford to be choosers. She slid into the seat as Lorenzo passed Vesna some money, grinning. "It's possible, you should ask if they do! I imagine a place like this has a Facebook page floating around with some pictures." She made to fish for her phone but paused - Vesna would probably find out sooner at the counter than she would in her Google search.
Claire decided to take the moment with just her and Lorenzo at the table to crowd watch, trying to siphon out any clues or abnormalities. The crowd was a mixed bunch of younger kids and teens, middle aged folks, and elderly people, and everything around them was endless activity. After the day they had had so, Claire felt exhausted just by watching them. Outside of the hustle and bustle, she could not pick out anything that seemed abnormal off the bat, but then again that had held true at their last stop. She did not really know what she was looking for, other than something that appeared out of the ordinary.
She sighed and conveyed another musing of the moment to Lorenzo, folding her arms on the (now) crumb-free tabletop. "I just realized that if things get really strange here regarding our Essence hunt, it'll be a lot harder to wave it off in a crowded place over one that was abandoned." A nervous buzzing settled into her skull; that was all the group needed - to get arrested at a cute cafe. Hopefully it would not come to that.

The cafe may boast a fabulous selection of pastry, but it seemed like the best food here actually comes from the kitchen. Delicious looking panini and other type of hot and cold sandwiches exited the kitchen doors continuously, being brought and served to the customers. There are at least four servers going around, and two behind the counter. One making the coffee and probably the one in charge of the orders as well, and one more behind the cannoli station, making fresh cannolis, which seemed to be a favorite here as well.
The needle seemed to be pointing into the kitchen though, beyond the swinging doors right behind the cashier. Perhaps they need to wander deeper in...?
"Hi! My name is Scarlet! May I take your order?" The tall lady barista with flaming red hair that matched her name turned her attention to Cesc and Vesna after she had handed an order of drinks out to a server. As a person staying in Gaia all her life, she had seen plenty of weird people. So neither Cesc, Vesna or Lorenzo weirds her out. Her smile is bright and cheery as she spoke. "The cannoli is a huge hit here if you would like something sweet. And our special sandwich of the day is a beef brisket with gruyere cheese and heirloom tomato."

As they waited in line, Cesc looked down at the needle for some extra information about where they needed to go. When he saw it pointing toward the swinging doors, he groaned inwardly. The kitchen. The bakery kitchen wasn't too bad--it was clean and relatively big and most of the baking happened in the early morning, so sneaking in wasn't too big of a deal. But this was a busy cafe, where there were probably line cooks and waiters and the yelling of 'behind!' as people went past.
These freaking fel essences certainly had a mischievous streak.
Ah well, he thought. He'd just have to do his best not to let that color his opinion of the resulting Raevans.
As they approached their turn in line and the barista began to speak to them, Cesc smiled, his mind whirling with thought. It was the thought of Vesna's excitement upon seeing Vermillion's Instagram that popped a lightbulb into his head.
"Thanks so much, Scarlet," he said, his voice warm and earnest. His aura of calmness and rejuvenation slowly unfurled from him, and he stood straight and made earnest eye contact with her as she spoke, like the specials were the most interesting thing he'd heard all day. He felt a touch ridiculous inwardly.
"That all sounds so great. Listen--I know you guys are incredibly busy--but I'm Cesc, and this is Vesna. We run an alt food blog online and have heard this is the best cafe in Durem. We're gonna order a few things to take pictures of, if that's alright--a latte, that cannoli, and your special sounds great, along with whatever you think would be Insta-worthy, Vesna. Oh, and we were wondering--" His smile faltered into a boyish look, half-pleading. "--we'd love to just pop into the kitchen and take a quick picture of your chefs at work. We won't get in anybody's way and it won't take but a second. People love to see who's behind the scenes."
