Jeremiah's gaze flicked back to Zac, a gesture for him to come look at the footprints as well. Some part of him thought ...

With their conversations, some of them philosophical, the sight of what was possibly cloven feet? Probably a thing Zac would be interested in. Especially after the talk about devils, horsepeople of the apocalypse, and other things.

Still he was hoping that Finn would tell him something else but his gut said otherwise.

The detective looked over to Rabbit. "Come and see means come and see. Most things here don't come with an explanation or guidance ..." A hand was raked through his hair, Jeremiah moving back over to Algie a moment.

"If we're certain there's nothing else to be gained here then we should follow the path. It's the only thing we have leading us." Jeremiah looked to Leila, frowning. He was, in all honesty, at a loss with what to do with the foot.

"We've no evidence bags, nothing to really handle it properly ..." The detective snorted. He did not want not leave it but did they really want to carry with them? Never mind the thought of Townhome and Mercer, both of them missing, showing up at the department with a cleanly severed foot.

Right.

Right.

Leila grimaced at the obvious smell of blood, and held up the shoe with the light pointed to it so those interested could see the drenched sock inside. "Not as fresh as the blood in the puddles. That's weird."

Algie watched them turn over and inspect the foot and all he could do was stay a safe distance back and avert his eyes. He'd been in morgues and seen corpses (all for research of course), even a crime scene or two, but it wasn't quite the same as finding the severed foot of a missing girl.

Just a girl.

Heliodora.

Under his green tartan umbrella, which had been raised again when they entered the forest, he ran his hand over the cover of the book he'd had tucked under his arm the whole time. The receipt still stuck out on the page marking the story of Heartbreak Hill, if only because it somehow always brought him back to that. Algie met Jeremiah's eyes as he stepped back to his side, and without a further glance flipped the book open as if there could be anything to help them.

It had been hers after all. He felt like maybe, maybe this time he'd find something more helpful.

"You're okay," she said to Autumn with a gentle smile. Asiya didn't think of her as selfish or anything. If anything, the fashionista was right to be terrified. This place was strange and clearly evil, so she was a bit scared now, too, even though she didn't say it verbally. "And you're welcome. I wish I could have done more." But what else could she have done? Nothing, really.

Asiya then turned to Kalisha, her attention now on what she was saying to her. Others in the group did seem to have the severed-foot incident under control. Some of them were cops, apparently? That was useful! They could lend their area of expertise to the queer happenstance. All Asiya was, herself, was an artist. She couldn't really do much. "You are very well prepared, even if you didn't necessarily mean to be. It's very smart."

While the others tried to piece together Heliodora's foot, Asiya had other ideas. Maybe there were clues further in the forest or perhaps someone else out there for them to talk to? "...I'm going to go explore." she said to Kalisha and anyone else who was listening. She then gazed over to Erin and waved at her warmly. "Would you like to come with? The offer is for anyone, by the way." She just thought to ask Erin first, since the two were semi-familiar with each other now.

Asiya is going into the woods to explore more. Maybe to see if there are any other clues or people around who know more about stuff. She's probably gonna get eaten. Nbd.

The memory invoked by the open book envelops all of them, fuzzy-edged but clear: they sit in the same section of the path, back against one of the nearby trees. They see... figures, indistinct but clearly delineated by patches of harsh white rimlighting. One of them approaches and speaks in an unidentifiable language, something long and thin in one of its appendages.

Their answer, however, is perfectly intelligible and recognizable. Chris especially would know this voice from many rounds of raucous, disruptive laughter in his classroom: Heliodora says, "Okay, okay, but--don't leave me, okay?"

Their legs are extended out before them, their hands fisted white-knuckled around clumps of wet moss, and then the thing lifts the knife and then--

Pain.

When the memory ends, a quick look to the left towards the most likely tree reveals ten deep gouges in the mud: five for each finger.

Quote me if Asiya still wants to go exploring! I do need more specific questions to answer, though--what exactly is she looking for? 3nodding

Any high school students might also recognize the voice! Heliodora was very loud.

Autumn opened her mouth to reply to Asiya, only to be washed with the vision of what seemed to be Heliodora's life, and- pain. Gut-wrenching, soul-searing pain. Autumn slapped a hand over her mouth to keep from screaming again, this time at the shared pain. Deep breaths, girl. Deep breaths. She forced herself to inhale, exhale. Inhale, exhale. When it finally got her nerves somewhat under control, she looked up to Asiya to REALLY talk to the girl.

"I- I'm going with you. If whatever the ******** that thing was is still in the woods, you're not going alone."

Alexis didn't have any ideas for an actual response, measured-out and carefully thought, that didn't involve at least one step of causing harm to Chris. People listened to that. But it'd be a bad idea, here -- they had at least that modicum of self-control. So they just huffed at him, turned away, and --

the book opened and --

Alexis stumbled and almost fell, throwing their hands out onto a tree for balance, trying to keep weight off the foot that was still attached despite - well. The memory of it being removed. Poor kid. "<********> -" It had been nothing like a razor. They heaved for breath, turned away from the group, trying not to show just how strong that feeling had been. (There was bile in the back of their throat.)

Seeing the body part itself hadn't phased Leila much. However, being forced to relive the events that preceded them finding it was a different story -- in the throes of shock from the pain and imagery, she gasped in panic and dropped the foot back into the mud before finding a tree she could lean against while gathering back her bearings. She felt like throwing up.

"Jesus." It came out as a hiss, and Ves visible recoiled, both from the severed foot and from the memory that washed over her. The pain. It was tough enough to imagine it, and now to feel it, to know what it was like...

She sank into a crouch to stabilize herself, before looking to the left, to a tree that looked at once familiar and strange, and saw the ten furrows ripped into the mud. She really, really didn't want to look.

Jeremiah was prepared for the vision, opening books in the library prepared him, but this was still on the edge of too much.

These voices were nothing like the Sunny-speak he had heard with Zac and there was no accompanying sense of tranquility and sorrow. This was pain.

It was years of training, years of work, years of do not jump, do not be spooked, that kept him from letting out his real reaction.

His head spun, eyes opening up once he realized they were closed and he looked over to Finn. "I believe that answers the question of who's foot that is." It wasn't sarcastic, it wasn't snarky, it was a stated grim fact.

Jeremiah did not even realize that during the vision his hand had moved to grip Algie's elbow. It wasn't a tight hold, more a reassuring one than anything else as.

Algie inhaled hard and loud through his nose, one hand splaying across the book in his hands. The older man swallowed thickly past the lingering pain. He was disturbed obviously, more so at feeling than simply seeing but at the same time he was encouraged that the book could show them what happened.

Algie looked at Jeremiah very seriously, not releasing nor turning any more pages in the book yet, his hand remained spread across it.

"I'm going to keep going."

And he started walking forward following the footprints.

Tory had been about to say something to Rabbit -- a greeting, a question about the voice that had drawn them there (he liked the term Loudspeaker Taste Experience), a comment that he recognized Ranger Derouen from seeing him occasionally when he'd been in the forest before, when it was normal -- then Heliodora's book was opened. He could only stand there frozen as the memory washed over him, as clear as if it was his own. Right down to the pain of the knife.

When it was over, he reeled and clutched his head, his stomach clenching from the phantom pain sensation. "Whoa." All kinds of messed up indeed. And getting progressively more so.

Shaking his head to gather his senses back and spattering water everywhere from his drenched dreads, he looked at Brie and Rabbit, then at the girls who wanted to explore off into the woods. "Maybe… maybe we should," he agreed, eyes wide with trepidation. "Y'know, follow the tracks. Like all of us. That'd be the smart thing to do -- well, not smart, who knows what's out there that might cut us up or whatever, but you know what I mean. I guess. I hope. It can't get us all, right?"

He turned back to Brie and Rabbit. "What do you guys think?"

"I'll go along with the group," Autumn agreed, nodding absently. She jerked a thumb in Tory's direction.

"I agree with this guy- I don't think we should split up."

"Not a horror movie, my a**," Autumn grumbled under her breath, mostly inaudible to the assembled group.

The memory ended. Aleksy, who had thus far displayed the emotional range of a marble statue, managed to stumble off the path before spectacularly vomiting into the nearest bush. Those things were... they weren't as they ought to have been. They were inhuman. Their arms had... too much, they were too much, it was all too much.

His head spun. He leaned hard on his umbrella, nevermind that it was still open and now covered in mud.

He scrubbed his teeth against the cuff of his sweater, and tried to forget about everything he'd just seen.
