( Zurine - Snowball signups with Cesc and Ethiriel )

"Worry about -me- with snow?" Zuri said cheerfully, leaning in and fluffing up her wings with pride. "Why would anyone ever worry about me in snow?" Her smile was impish, her eyes twinkling as she looked at the gathered folks. She didn't recognize Mordekai, but she was glad of the introduction. "Hello -- it's good to meet you," she hummed at him. "I'm afraid I haven't met Aina either -- I've been a bit of a hermit recently, but now that it's winter, I can't seem to stay still!"

However, after a moment, her attention turned back to Ethiriel, and her lips pursed slightly. "I didn't even know it was your birthday! I'm glad you came out to spend it with us all," she said warmly to her new friend.

( SORRY this is supposed to be before the snowball stuff oops my bad >3>;;; )

((Ethiriel – Snowball signups – Cesc, Mordor and Zuri))

It was with a bright smile that Ethiriel greeted Cesc, her arm still loosely looped around Zurine’s. Her attention was immediately on the stag unconsciously as she stared at him with a pleased expression. However, once his attention was on the owl’s, so was Ethiriel’s.

”Yes, I do know Sir Mordekai, but it is a pleasure to meet with you again!” said Ethiriel, giving the man a gentle bow of her head without removing herself from her Sigel friend. A small blush crept across her cheeks, her free hand lightly waving him off. ”Thank you, thank you… though it is not a big deal. I would much rather be here with you all.” She then turned to Zurine, ”It is my pleasure, it really is. This is all I could ever ask for.”

With a quick look, Ethiriel glanced at the roster for snowball fights and her eyes lit up. She couldn’t read or write, but she gently nudged Zurine. ”Do you think you could write my name…? And Gabe’s, if you would…”

THE SNOWBALL FIGHT IS UNDERWAY.

If your character is in the snowball fight, then that's where they are right now-- the cabin is only occupied by characters that aren't in the fight or have come in from it.

When the snowball fight is over, I'll make another announcement and everyone can come in!

I'm also going to push up the date for the countdown because snowballs are flying so fast! That way we can all have more time for smooching each other and saying Happy New Year!

(( Gabe Knight = Entrance --> Snowball Signups --> Lounge Area ))

With the time passed and the snowball fight underway, the interior of the cabin was much less occupied but many faces still milled about. After his very unceremonious entrance, the brother of Ethiriel's guardian stepped into the cabin after taking a moment to kick the snow off his shoes and wipe some off his sleeve from an airborne assault. Though he had only been out a short few minutes, his face was already a little red from the cold.

He started, first, towards the lounge but something in his peripheral caught his eye -- a sign up sheet. After only a moment's pause, Gabe walked himself over to it and quickly scanned for names. His brows flattened as soon as he found what he was looking for; his name, right beneath Ethiriel's on the roster.

Nice.

Gabe ran a hand over his face and sighed. Thank you, Ethiriel, for not asking if he wanted to join even though she knew he was coming. Passive aggression in full reeling mode now, Gabe settled himself into one of the emptier corners of the lounge to decompress. He was here out of necessity, he would have to remind her, because of his brother's poor scheduling. Tired blue eyes drifted to the food table, zoning in quickly on the bottles of alcohol. Necessity also meant he couldn't go for it, as much as he felt like it right at that moment.

(( Cadi -> Gabe, lounge area ))

When her company had filtered out to the invitingly fun atmosphere of the snowball fight, Cadi's fingers curled tightly around her mug of hot chocolate. Claire had laughingly signed herself up on the way out, turning to Cadi with a nod towards the sheet, and a, "want to come out with me?" She replied with a firm shake of the head and waved a free hand, telling her, "nahhh, you go raise hell for me." Much of the crowd seemed to move out, Claire mixed among them amiably, and with her only two familiar anchors out of sight, Cadi was starting to feel lost in a sea of strangers. She drained her cocoa cup in record time and deposited it shakily with the other dirties; her anxious fingers looked for something else to clutch and instead held the undersides of her own arms as she leaned against the table. The sounds of laughter outside were clear - at least she knew her aunt figure was having a good time, and lord knows she needed it after the year she had had. She tossed another glance towards the folks who had remained, many of them already engaged amongst each other, and that anxiousness grew. She scratched a bare patch of skin on the back of her wrist, and pushed off from the table (gently, so as not to disturb the others still clustered around it) and headed for the food table. Her eyes found the champagne bottles, and she was so very sorely tempted - but that was for those who would be toasting in the New Year, hugging, kissing, and celebrating. Maybe when it was closer to midnight.

Out of the corner of her eye, Cadi saw another person surreptitiously eyeing the alcohol from the lounge area close by. Her own nerves kept her from looking at the stranger directly, but once his attention had diverted, she chanced a glance. He looked tired and wore a sour expression to her eyes, face tinged with the cold - he must not have fared too well outside. Her eyes darted up to his damp hair with a somewhat comical chunk of snow left forgotten; seems somebody had gotten him good in the battle.

"Rough going out there?" She held up a couple of napkins that were nestled among the finger foods, not wanting to draw too much attention to what was likely a bitter loss.

(( Gabe w/ Cadi in the lounge area ))

For all of the cold outside had brought, not to mention getting pelted twice, it all rather felt the same once he was inside and seated. Things were quiet and still for several moments, save the idle chatter in the walls and peels of laughter outside. Even if he couldn't take the edge off with some of the champagne, Gabe was still grateful to be inside and not a sitting duck. There were few people here and they left him alone-- or, they were.

His eyes narrowed as someone began their approach but he refrained from looking at them directly until they made full contact, which he sorely hoped they didn't. Today was not his day. Gabe turned his head just enough to give Cadi a dull warning look, a look he hoped said enough that he wasn't in the mood to socialize without needing to open his mouth. It was only then he felt what bit of snow that managed to stowaway in his hair was melting and a cold trail ran down the back of his neck; he grimaced.

"You could say that," he answered stiffly. The napkins were taken and quickly put to use, first to stop the melting drops from moving any lower down his skin, and then to dab at his hair. Only once the issue was well on its way to being removed did he give Cadi a muted "thanks" and leaned back in his seat. "They're pretty indiscriminate out there."

(( Cadi -> Gabe, lounge area ))

Cadi grabbed a soda can (a poor substitute for booze but something to drink all the same) and made her way over, but gave pause when Gabe shot her a look - one she was well-versed in recognizing, being an avid practitioner herself. She anxiously began to rethink her futile attempt at conversation, an art she admittedly was never great at starting, but she was momentarily distracted as she noticed the water make its trek down his scalp, forcing a grimace from him. Water that cold would likely put anyone in a sour mood, she wagered, and she offered the napkins anyway despite her hesitance, but she drew her free hand back as soon as he took them from her, curling it around the soda can in nervous reflex. He had picked a rather toasty spot compared to another cluster of seats found nearer to the door, and she eyed the empty chair just a short distance from him. While he set to work, she swallowed, a finger tapping on the can, and wondered if she should leave him alone, but the quiet 'thank you' caught her ear, as well as the slight continuation. Cadi's lips twitched into a nervous smile, and she made for the empty chair - close enough to the fire but not close enough so as to encroach his space. The snowball fight continued strongly outside, judging by the yelps of laughter, but she paid little mind as she settled into her own seat, pausing in thought - and ever peppered by doubts on if she even should reply or merely leave him to his own devices, and with an anxious pursing of the lips, she pushed forward.

"That's not very sportsmanlike of them." She was regretting grabbing the soda, her fingers becoming number the longer she held onto the cold can. "Guess it's good that I opted out then; I'm not built for warfare." She kept her eyes on the floor and a soft 'heh' escaped her lips. If anything, Cadi had to give Gabe credit for picking a primo spot in the lounge, though.

(( Gabe w/ Cadi in the lounge area ))

While she was busy with her soda and weighing her options on whether to sit or not, Gabe paid little mind to Cadi's hesitance and uncertainty; he was occupied with soaking as much water out of his hair as the napkins could hold. At least it would be a couple hours until they were back out in the cold and it was only a short walk to his car. The warmth of the lounge was certainly appreciated.

Gabe offered a short, humorless chuckle to Cadi's first comment, then a shrug to her next. "Lucky you," he pulled the napkins back once they were too damp to use and crumpled them into a messy ball, "I was drafted."

He slipped his gloves off, finally, and tucked them into his jacket pockets. Hands bare, he gave his hair a soft pat down to access the remaining damage; it wouldn't take long for it to dry from this point but it might be worth slipping over to a mirror, if there were any, to make sure nothing was terribly askew. "Now I'm AWOL." He was sure he wouldn't hear the end of this, tonight.

(( Cadi -> Gabe, lounge area ))

"Ah yes, good ol' conscription." Cadi popped the tab on her soda can, cringing at how loud the noise was in the mostly quiet room, before taking a pensive sip. "Hey, every soldier's gotta know when to retreat. Can't say I blame you if that's what you got for your troubles." Cadi watched each wadded napkin drop from his hands from the warmth of the arm chair, head inclined only just a bit to look at him but too nervous to actually engage fully. If she had been in a more familiar setting, perhaps she would not have felt so nervous striking up an admittedly stited conversation, but here she was, soldiering through it regardless. It certainly beat standing in the thick of things while others had conversations around her, and while Claire was outside having fun with her fellow Lab acquaintances. Other than Amity, Cadi did not know much of Raevans or the Lab itself outside of the brief conversations she had had with Claire and Aaron, and she was willing to wager that that was contributing to a lot of her feeling of otherness tonight, on top of her own anxiety. She fiddled with the tab on the cola can once, a dull springing sound her reply, but that was soon washed out by more jubilant shouts from outside as the snowball fight escalated again. She glanced up at the windows with a soft smile - but one that quickly receded and she busied herself staring into the recesses of the nearby fireplace, spanning a few moments of thoughtful silence before she spoke up again, partially to herself.

"S'kinda weird, this whole Lab thing, isn't it?" It felt weird voicing her opinion on the issue but the feeling of otherness had been growing in the back of her head, if she were honest, since she slid into the passenger side of Claire's car earlier this evening. She had meant nothing negative by it, nor was it meant as a remark against anyone present or the staff, but she still could not wrap her head around the concept of the Lab, the whys and hows - perhaps that would be something she would better understand when Claire and Aaron's Raevan was born. With a jolt she realized that Gabe might be a guardian himself, and her cheeks immediately flushed in embarrassment. It was another stark reminder that she was abysmally bad at conversation, and she decided to leave it at that as she took another nervous sip.

(( Gabe w/ Cadi in the lounge area ))

He let out a short, humorless chuckle. Conscription was right. Gabe passed a glance to the nearest window in attempt to see if Ethiriel herself was still in the game and just as jovial as when she first pelted him but the sky was getting too dim in contrast with the interior lighting to make out much of anything from where he sat.

Unlike Cadi seemed to be, Gabe wasn't overthinking his station here very much. He wasn't intending to socialize in the first place by being here, and truth be told he wasn't much in the mood for it but compared to most people he came across that were affiliated with lab she wasn't bouncing, bubbly, or otherwise being intrusive which he appreciated for the time being. While she fell silent and fiddled with her can, Gabe pulled his phone out and reclined properly in his seat. Cadi flicked the tab of her can, his thumb scrolled across the screen. He assumed their brief conversation was over, until she spoke again, and he looked up at her without lifting his head. The only time he could recall anyone affiliated scarcely agreeing with him about the place was one time in a bar that proved Gambino was entirely too small if he was bumping into lab folk at random.

"You're telling me," Gabe set his eyes back to the phone screen. Mid-scroll, he furrowed his brows and let his arm go limp against his leg while his attention moved to the fireplace. "Are you new?" He had to assume, due to how unusual it seemed to find people that weren't brimming with enthusiasm and blind praise. Not that he had spoken to many, very few in fact, but Gabe took his brother's small number of frequent associates to be a shining example of the community at large.

(( Cadi -> Gabe, lounge area ))

Cadi took another long draw from her soda can while Gabe fished out his phone, glancing over when he answered her question. She had not particularly expected an answer but she was pleased to know she was not the only one who shared that thought. It might do to ask a little more about the Lab, but given the fact that she was not much involved in the Lab other than her meager connection through Claire, she was not sure how much good that might do. Maybe to get a little more information to help out when Claire and Aaron's Raevan had arrived; they could probably use all the help they could get and she was well-used to being a babysitter. Gabe's statement drew another quiet "heh" from her, and she shook her head.

"Oh no, not me - my aunt. I'm just her plus-one tonight." Cadi tagged on a low laugh - her, a parent? She could barely handle caring for herself, much less another full-time. While she had no problem being the cool aunt, that came with its own perks; namely sending her niece and nephew back when she was worn out, which was admittedly becoming more and more frequent these days. They were growing up, and growing up rather spoiled (she'd have to have a word with Anais about that). "She and her husband are with the Lab and they're waiting on their.. 'Raevan,' right?" She looked over briefly for confirmation, but immediately dropped her gaze again to the soda can. "You?"

((Vivi, Shep, Cesc--> re-entry from the snowball fight))

"That was quite lovely!" said Vivi with a laugh as she stepped inside the cabin again, setting the camera down on a nearby side table. She pulled off her mittens and shrugged off her coat and put it up on a hook, looking around. "Why, it's so bare in here with everyone out having fun!" She grinned at Cadi and Gabe. "You two are smart to get such a good spot by the fire!"

Shepard set his and Cesc's popsicle makers under their coats, and he took a cloth napkin to scrub through his wet hair as he came in. His nose and cheeks were red, but his eyes were bright with amusement and good humor. "The important thing," he said, "is that Rhede's team went down."

Cesc snorted, pulling off his jacket gingerly. He was practically soaked through from all the snow-dumping that he'd received. "Yeah, yeah..." he shook his hair, droplets flying everywhere. "Geezus," he said, looking behind him to Ethiriel and Zurine. "I think I need to change--you two are merciless, you know?"

((Ethiriel  re-entry from snowball fight | Zurine and Cesc))

The silvery Frei had been silently eager to get back inside; despite how much fun they were having, how she was having, the cold was getting to her despite her silver being hidden. Her hair was soaked from all of the play, but much like Shep, she had grabbed a towel to dry herself down. As Cesc spoke, she let out another laugh – though a bit more toned down than when they were outside, but just as happy.

”I suppose Zurine and I just make a good team,” she teasingly boasted, passing a glance to the bird in question. Gently placing a hand on Zuri’s shoulder, Ethiriel looked back to Cesc. ”Oh, there is something I would like to give you, Cesc, whenever there is an opportune moment. But first… do change if you must.” she said, her smile becoming a bit more gentle.

(( Gabe w/ Cadi + Vivi in the lounge area ))

His brows rose slightly with the knowledge that Cadi was in a similar position as himself -- guilty by association. Gabe nodded as his eyes returned to the screen of his phone, only managing a single scroll of his thumb across the surface as Cadi continued. The term 'raevan' had certainly thrown him for a loop when he was first becoming acquainted with Ethiriel and the lab; Gabe had outright mistaken it for the bird, a raven, but his brother and the silvery frei were able to set him straight.

At her question, he shook his head. "My brother," Gabe glanced up towards the windows again -- it was getting dark quickly now, "I got saddled with transportation."

Only a few moments later did the whistle blow outside and a cheerful, albeit muffled, announcement was shouted outside. Gabe glanced to the front door briefly as people began shuffling inside, the first of which he averted his eyes from to avoid drawing attention and generating conversation but, of course, it was a wasted effort. Vivi came right up and engaged them both with a grin, which Gabe took as time to stop bothering with his phone since it seemed he would have no peace now that the snowball fight was over. He tucked it back into his pocket and gave Vivi an acknowledging glance that at least seemed polite; the warmth and quiet from before was certainly helping him shake off the cold and irritation from when he first arrived -- though not by much.

"I'm sure everyone has the same idea now," he commented, leaning his head back to peek around Vivi as he heard Ethiriel come in next. At least with them all inside it wouldn't take long to round the tea raevan up when it was time to go.
