Noting Alionse's admiration and rather reveling in it, Vesper's impish smile widened briefly, and she added a playful dance spin for good measure. At the end of the turn, she let her outstretched arms drop to her sides at last. Momentum carried her forward to fall into step beside Alionse as they moved toward the seaside town together.

"I think it would probably be the other way around." Against any danger lurking in the night, his dagger definitely trumped her delicate hairpins in a fight. "But it's nice of you to say so."

He glanced at her. "Then maybe we'll save each other." As she stepped beside him, Alionse shifted his pace, accidentally brushing her hand. He felt a sort of tingle at the touch. Impulsively, he reached out and took her hand in his. He froze. Why did I do that? But he didn't let go immediately. Her hand felt nice in his. He shook his head and then dropped her hand.

"Sorry, I shouldn't have done that," Alionse said, looking away and hunching over a little. He just hoped she wasn't angry with him.

"Maybe we will," Vesper agreed with a nod, musing on the possibility. Deep in thought, she felt Alionse brush against her hand. Then, to her surprise, he clasped her hand in his. She was just turning to regard him with brows lifted when he dropped her hand and apologized instead. Curiouser and curiouser.

She remembered her brothers' small hands clinging tight to hers, drawing strength and courage from the contact. She remembered too that light magic was at a disadvantage during the night, and perhaps so were the Magescians drawing on that element. Perhaps he was more troubled about the darkness than he'd let on. Still, something seemed to be missing from this surmise of hers.

"Why did you?" she asked, her mild voice betraying a little of her puzzlement.

He flushed and shook his head. "It was an impulse." He didn't elaborate instead he looked straight ahead, his cheeks still heated. If she hadn't figured it out, he rather she didn't. Besides it felt sort of strange to him as well. He hadn't felt the desire to hold anyone's hand before, except when he was a small child.

He got a thoughtful look on his face. He wondered what made Vesper different.

An impulse. An answer, and not an answer. But it wasn't time to press the question, and Vesper meant to figure it out on her own, anyhow.

As they walked on, she stole oblique glances across at Alionse's face. When she judged the silence had gone on long enough, she asked lightly, "Have I put you off the idea of meeting other Oblivionites altogether?"

He blinked in surprise and turned to look at Vesper. "Not at all. I think actually the opposite. Meeting you has made me think everyone might be wrong about Oblivionites."

He paused, turning over what that meant to him. He tucked it away. He knew he would think it all over later. "How about you? What do you think of Orderite after meeting one?"

Vesper's head tilted toward Alionse as he replied, and she smiled at his words.

She spent a moment thinking over her own reply, but it was simple, really. Leaving aside the question of what she thought of the Orderite race as a whole, she answered, "You, you're not at all what I expected from an Orderite." Her smile widened. "And I like surprises, Alionse."

Alionse felt a swell of pride at that. Even though he knew he hadn't really done anything, it still felt good to know. "Then I'm glad I was a good surprise." He looked out at the growing darkness. "I never expected to meet an Oblivionite, nout outside a battlefield. I wonder why...we have to be separated like this."

More thoughts came to his mind, but he decided to keep them to himself. Even what he already said might have been too much. He didn't like pointing out the implication that they were born enemies, even if that was the truth.

"Because that's how we were created to be." It was a bit of a facile answer, Vesper knew, so she added, "Is this something you would want to change?"

She could see the town in the distance now, supposed that they might have already reached the halfway point, so she paused, wanting to hear this answer at least.

Would he want anything to change? "I prefer to be able to meet you and visit you just like I would anyone, instead of hiding it. As to the war..."

He frowned. That was a lot more complicated. The better part of him thought the war should end, but if the war ended wouldn't that mean either the Oblivionites or the Orderites had to be wiped out.

He shrugged. "There's no point in wishing when it comes to war."

"You might be right," Vesper conceded, somber at the thought. "But I like to think that we can act for positive change, however small."

Then she summoned up a small smile. "I hadn't meant to talk of such solemn things, especially on the way back. If you write to me, I promise I won't be nearly so gloomy."

He smiled. "I can't promise the same thing. People say I can be too serious sometimes, but I'l try my best to put at least one happy thing in my letters." He looked to the side where he had to go and then ahead where he assumed Vesper was going. "I guess this is where we part."

Alionse shifted from foot-to-foot. "It was good meting you Vesper. I think if all Oblivionites are like you then maybe there is a chance for change." He waved his hand at her and started backing away. "Until next time Vesper!"

Too serious? Vesper studied the smiling Orderite. Alionse didn't seem all that melancholy (and that was a good thing, to her mind), but perhaps upon a closer acquaintance, he would prove to be so. She meant to find out, one way or another. "Write whatever you like, just so long as you write. It'll be fine," she assured him, her small smile widening briefly.

She grew more pensive at the mention of other Oblivionites. "If you do meet any other Oblivionites, be... well, just be careful." She herself would be cautious in any future encounters with Orderites, despite this positive experience; that went without saying. "Until next time, Alionse." She waved as well, then turned to continue her walk.
