"With the onion rings and BBQ sauce? Yeah man, I'm feelin' that one too." Otto set down his own menu, his lips quirking slightly in a smirk. "Places like this are more fun when I ain't by myself. I usually just nab fast food when I go out on leave." But his leave was usually meant for downtime anyway.

The waitress took their order in a rush of blonde hair and perfume that smelled somewhat fruity. Chance leaned back in the booth and propped his feet up on the one across from him, next to Otto, and smiled at him.

"You did say that you like one on one time more than group s**t," said Chance lightly. "It's much easier to relax when it's like this, really. If I had more leave days, I'd make it a weekly thing to go and get food, just spend time off the island, but I think that's probably why they restrict it to only a few days a month."

He laughed, and shook his head, as, a few minutes later, their drinks were deposited onto their table. Chance fiddled with the wrapper on his straw and stuck it in his drink, swirling the ice cream around.

"People would just always be gone on leave, instead of doing missions."

"Definitely. I think the high ups gotta be real strict on a lot of stuff. Hunters on the island are such dipshits and prone to like.. well, a lot of them act like children, yanno?" He smirked, sticking his straw into his milkshake. "I used to think they were too hard on us, but I don't think I could do any better keepin' an island of misfits in line. No s**t would ever get done."

He sipped the milkshake in, and he felt the creamy smoothness soother his woes. It was so sweet. So smooth. So delicious.

Chance laughed, shaking his head. "If Twitter is any indication of how people act here on the island, then I think I've got a pretty good idea of what to expect."

The root beer float was exactly what he needed; it was cold and delicious and sweet all at once, and Chance took his time enjoying it, swirling his straw around until everything was mixed together in a nice, slushy sort of mess that was strangely appealing.

"Okay, Otto," he said, once he'd gotten his fill of the drink and was looking very satisfied and relaxed. "Favorite food, go."

Otto leaned back, his gaze lifting in thought. "Hawaiian pizza; the one with ham, pineapple and bacon on it. I like it best with some hot sauce drizzled on it." It's what he lived on when he went to the human world for some R&R. "I'm also a big fan of nachos. Loaded. The works."

He nodded his head at Chance. "Same question; go."

Pineapples. Why did everyone like pineapples. Chance made a little face, but he was laughing.

"I have to admit," he said, shaking his head. "I'm not the biggest fan of pineapples myself, but I do like ham and bacon. I'm a big fan of peppers too, and onions, on my food. I think spicy is the way to go for me, I like foreign foods, especially curry."

The waitress skipped past their table, sliding steaming plates in front of them that smelled of french fries and nice, juicy cheeseburgers. Chance gave her a nod and then looked down at his own food with an eager, pleased sort of expression.

"What about movies?" he asked, picking up a fry. "Favorite genres or anything in particular?"

"I like a bit of spice. Not too much. I'm a big fan of sweets though." A big fan was perhaps an understatement. He kept jars and stashes of sweets.

The food came, and Otto saw a little bit of heaven just then. He hoped it tasted as good as it looked. "I like disaster films. Like 2012, Volcano, Twister. Natural disasters and like... things that blow up." He picked up the burger with both hands, and took a large bite.

"Mmmm..." His shoulders relaxed as the amazing flavour ran through. It truly was the king of greasy burgers.

"Sweets are definitely great," he said with a laugh. "I mostly like anything sour too, like the sour candies that are little people, I don't remember the name of them. But anything sweet and sour is fun for me, Skittles too."

He ate a few more fries and decided they were much better than the less-than-satisfactory ones served in the cafeteria back on Deus. "I have to admit," said Chance, a little sheepishly. "I ask what your favorite movies are, when I haven't even seen pretty much anything. I've never had a television at my place before, so I'm sadly, woefully underinformed when it comes to movies and television. But I did like that one movie that I saw once at the library..." He hummed a minute, trying to think of the name. "It had to do with New York freezing over and a giant boat..."

Chance shook his head, taking a moment to appreciate Otto's appreciation, a smile on his face.

"I think we made a good decision coming in here," he declared, taking a bite of his own delicious burger.

"Sour Patch Kids. Love those things." Otto nodded, a connoisseur of the candy world.

His head lifted, his mind automatically knowing the movie from two little clues. "Day After Tomorrow. That one's good too. Bad acting, but I don't watch them movies for the acting." He watched them for the plot and nature wrecking s**t. "I got a whole shelf full of movies. Welcome to come over and watch with me n' Cami." Of course they were mostly disaster flicks.

"I think you're right." He mused back, taking one of the cajun fries next. One became two, and then three. Too good to have just one. "If we weren't a military type organization I'd petition for a decent restaurant be put in on the island. Personally I feel resources would be better spent on actual combat related s**t though." He'd have to settle for once a month trips to the human world.

"Yes, those!" said Chance, snapping his fingers in recognition. "We used to sell them at the bookstore I worked at, back in Detroit. Those things taste so ******** good, man, I'm a huge fan."

At least he knew the title now to the movie; and Otto's offer was received with a slight surprise, Chance blinking, a pleased smile appearing on his face. "If Cami doesn't mind a third person joining, I think it'd be fun," he said, shifting a little on his seat. "She's the best friend, right? You two live together?"

He took another bite of his burger, and then another. Good food was always a huge thing to be positive about. "Isn't there like...a bar or something?" Chance asked, picking up his napkin and dabbing at his mouth. "I haven't been to it, but I heard there's some sort of bar place...somewhere."

The burger was almost gone now. Chance set the last few bites back down on his plate and went for the fries again.

"What sort of thing would you want to be added?" he asked curiously. "I'm still sorta lacking on overall information when it comes to combat, since I've only been on one mission so far, and it was a ******** of screw ups, unfortunately."

"Yeah, she is. Rather than make her stay in the basement, I offered her my place. Once she's full hunter, maybe she can get a place beside mine or something." Because while he dearly appreciated her company, there were times Otto preferred the place as his own, and to himself.

"Yeah, Rep has a bar. I ain't been there much. Once or twice is all." Public gatherings weren't his thing.

Otto finished off most of his burger, taking a break from it to talk some more. "That's just it. So many missions end up with crazy bad casualties. I dunno... maybe safer ways to get intel from Horseman lairs. Or general tools to prevent mass slaughter." He just knew that Deus tended to veer on the cusp of disaster more often than not.

"Worse off is the leads. They never give us much info beyond what they think we outta know. I sometimes wonder what we even fight for.."

"A very generous offer," said Chance mildly, popping a few more fries into his mouth and chewing slowly. "The basement is sadly lacking in many things, apparently, and while I wouldn't mind the company on occassion, obviously the trainee rooms are a little crowded when it comes to sharing. Plus, you know," Chance laughed. "I like to have a place I can come back to without having to worry about locking my door or stepping on someone's toes. I do like company, though," he added, waving a hand in Otto's direction to indicate he was part of said company.

It did not surprise him that Rep was the one who owned the bar. Chance gave a little snort, but he was more concerned about what Otto was saying after that fact to comment on it.

"Ah..." said Chance, the smile sliding off of his face to be replaced with a slightly grim expression. "I've dealt with one of the horsemen before, they're extremely unpleasant. Needless to say, I'm not a huge fan of them."

He toyed absently with one of his fries, pushing around the rest.

"I haven't even met the leads yet," Chance admitted ruefully. "I suppose they think we're just...expendable bait."

"To be honest I miss having a place of my own. But I don't have the heart to say that to Cami." Not again. She'd seemed to fall apart last he hinted at it. Sure the place was his, but it had become hers too. He loved Cami. She was a dear friend. He'd not risk her heart for a den of solitude.

"I've come a little too close and personal with them." He murmured, lightly rubbing the scar on the back of his neck; now covered in a tattoo. "We're insects to them. Toys. We managed to postpone the apocalypse so far.. but God only knows what else they'll do. I ain't got a clue what's up with their plans no more. Missions ain't been too telling." Were they the biggest threat? What of the goddesses he;d seen in those dreams? What of Destruction, and the red key that poisoned his strength?

"Pretty much. I think they feel the privileges we get is payment enough for throwing us under a ******** ton of buses." He wished they meant more to them. But what could be done? They were all stuck here, and they needed to make it better on their own.

"I have a specialization." He decided to share, munching on spicy fries in-between topics. "It's survival tactics and training. I mostly been making courses to help hunters prepare for common ways to avoid danger while on missions. But I wanna expand on it somehow. Some way to keep people alive even when s**t seems hopeless. Whether it's strength training, agility, or learnin' to spot danger before it hits you."

Chance let out a little hum. "I think maybe if you two could get rooms side by side, that would be easier, wouldn't it?" he asked thoughtfully. "You suggested that earlier, it might be a more beneficial solution to keeping close while still maintaining your space."

But he was a neutral outside party, and he didn't want to get involved if it meant making more issues for Otto. Chance gave him an apologetic smile and ate another fry.

"I admittedly have only had one run-in with the Horsemen," he said. "And it was ******** up enough that I'd rather not have to have a second one. She was a piece of work, that one; I've never felt so much that I was not more than a simple piece of scrap to be tossed aside than when I was stuck with it."

The memories were as unpleasant as they ever were. Chance pushed them aside, trying not to recall the slippery feeling of blood against his fingertips and the lack of breath in his lungs as he'd struggled to find the pendant around his neck.

His eyebrows rose. "A specialization?" Chance repeated curiously, eating the last of his own fries. "That sounds really interesting, is it just...like coming up with different hands-on methods to gain experience without going into the field?"

"Yeah. Still gotta wait for her to go full though. Who knows how long that'll be."

"It won't be your last, even if it's gunna be a while." The best Chance could do was be prepared, and maybe learn some more about them. Knowledge was power, after all.

Otto nodded. "The leads have a habit of tossin' trainees out into a huge messes. I was hopin' it could take the shock factor out of near death missions. A little. Without the threat of death or injuries in a training course, people can be a little more daring and comfortable. But learning on the field is a lot more relevant; cause if you ain't careful you really will die. So you're more likely to take what you learn more serious." Or someone you know. He shrugged.
"I dunno if it even works. If not, I'm sure I'll stop getting funding eventually. But until then, I can't let myself get comfy." He had to improve, and find something that worked. Something that the island actually needed, and helped.

"I've seen a few trainees who think they can hide or do nothing. Not contribute and live cozy here. It pisses me off, cause that's not what being a hunter means." Who recruited kids like Mik anyway? It seemed like a waste of resources. "It's about sacrifice for a greater good. We gave up havin' a future to be here, so we gotta make it worth it. I'll die someday... but I wanna die knowin' I did good for the world."

After all, Otto loved the world. Every time he visited a city, and stared out at the bight lights on a late night outside his hotel window, he felt it. This world that was so beautiful and full of drama, humanity and fun. It needed to be saved. He didn't want to see those lights die.
