All he wanted to do was hide; bury himself away in the darkest, deepest recesses of the world where he wouldn't have to worry about encountering another livign soul, known OR unknown. Maybe that was overdramatizing the situation...but frankly, Safi was past the point of caring what would be deemed an appropriate response. He had tried to recreate himself, and that had worked GREAT. So great that now he was more ashamed of himself than ever and had consequently come to the place he was at now, both physically and mentally. He might have been a goofball before, but now...he didn't even have a word to describe himself with. But maybe, with time..
"Man, you certainly believe in taking the brooding thing and running with it, don't you?"
The voice, coming as unexpectedly as it did, caused Safi to jump nearly a foot into the air, pivoting to see who it was that had managed to sneak up so on him. Really, was it so hard to get some peace? Obviously the answer to that was yes, but geez! This guy had some nerve...
But as he turned, fully fixing the speaker in his angry glare, Safi realized at once that something was...different about this stallion. Even without the other stallion speaking anymore, Safi could tell that something was different about him.
For one thing, in spite of the fact that Safi was giving him a fearful glare, the red stallion was neither angry, concerned, or upset in any fashion; he merely stood there, an amused smile on his lips and one eyebrow raised. Safi wasn't sure what to think, exactly; how did you react to that?
Fortunately for Safi, the other stallion reacted for him. "Touchy little fellow, aren't you? Relax, I'm not planning on beating you up or kicking you out of this nook of yours, if that's what you're worried about; nor am I planning on taking advantage of you in any way, if THAT'S what you're worried about." Chuckling a bit at his own wit, Guilian neatly folded back his brilliantly colored wings and breezed right past Safi, lowering his head and taking a drink from the stream without missing a beat. His thirst quenched, he raised it again and looked at Safi again, his black eyes still snapping with amusement. "Or is that what you were hoping?"
Ok, that was definitly enough. "No, I was NOT hoping any such thing!" And Safi demostrated that fact by taking a few very large steps away from this strange stallion; he seemed like the type who'd try anything. No, that was NOT what he needed around, thank you. "You've gotten your drink now; so why don't you just take off to wherever it was that you were going?"
His eyebrow going even higher, Guilian found himself studying the strange stallion even more intently. Now, he'd only been joking with Safi; he was a mare guy, very much a mare guy; but that didn't mean that he was one of those uber-possessive types who loathed other stallions for encroaching on his territory. No, he was a friendly kind of stallion; amorous intrigues with the ladies and jocular friendships with the guys was his cup of tea. But he could tell that something was up with this guy, and in a big way; he was more tightly wound than a top!
Which meant that he himself wasn't going anywhere.
"Actually, friend, I didn't just stop for a drink. It's getting dark, you know; I needed a place to stop for the night. So...I'm thinking that I'll be staying here. I hope you don't mind?
...Actually? "Yes, yes I do mind, actually; but don't fell obligated to leave on my account. The darkness doesn't really bother me, so I'll leave instead." With a frostily polite nod, Safi started to stalk off; however, he stopped abruptly when the other stallion suddenly stepped right into his way. Geez, what was up with this guy? "Do you mind?"
Grinning, Guilian shook his head. "Of course I don't! But I'm sorry, I can't let you go anywhere in your condition. You have to stay right where you are."
What was this, a joke? Well, Safi REALLY wasn't in any mood for joking right now, and he definitely found this to be in poor taste. "Condition? What condition are you talking about, stranger? Because I assure you, there is nothing wrong with me." Well, nothing aside of mental turmoil. But that was completely unrelated, dammnit!
Still, Guilian's replay caught him completely off-guard. "Was it really that bad? I mean, did she already have a mate, or did was she unwilling, or did you have problems, or what?"
If the ground beneath Safi's feet had caved in and buried him right then, Safi woul have been less surprised. But to hear a total stranger asking him about something so personal and be accurate about it, well! "What the hell are you talking about, man?"
Guilian wanted to laugh at the other stallion's discomfiture, but figured that that would be in poor taste. He'd had a hunch that there was a mare involved in his companion's plight; one could simply not be a conesuier to his degree without becoming at least a little knowledgeable on related fields, and he felt a somewhat civic duty to be useful to other stallions in regards to that knowledge. He hadn't expected the other to be so concerned, but obviously this was a deeper problem than most. "I'm talking about the issues you're having in regards to your...relations with a mare; you're as easy to read in that regard as a book, my friend."
Oh great. Just what he needed to hear; that he was wearing his problems on his sleeve. "And even if I am, I fail to see what business of yours it is." With that, Safi once again attempted to brush past the other stallion, only to be stopped rather pointedly by a wing.
"It's my business in that I can see it's weighing very heavily on you, friend; and I know from past experiences how truly problematic that can be on both you and those you encounter. So..." With that, Guilian smiled; a pleasant smile on the surface, but cold steel below. "You're not going anywhere until you tell me what's bothering you; and the sooner you realize that and start talking, the better off you'll be."

Tilting his head to oneside, a tiny fox peered around the edge of one of the trees that marked the border of Cajji's teepee area. Scenting the air with his keenly twitching nose, he narrowed his eyes as he looked into the teepee clearing. Granted, the aforementioned clearing was empty...but that scent couldn't lie.
And Cerdi (for that was his name, always had been and always would be, thanks much) was the patient type. The boss lived here, alright...and he was bound to be back eventually!

...Ok, this was just getting boring. The small blue fox lay curled up in a grassy nest he'd eked out a short distance away from the teepee, eyes on the clearing. Just as they'd been for the last several days. Ever since he'd shown up here. And why this touching display of loyalty to a place he'd never been? Well, that was obvious; it was 'cause this was where the boss lived!
Or at least, he'd THOUGHT that this was where the boos lived. It wasn't easy to track the trail of one that traveled by air, but Cerdi had persisted day in and day out, following even the slightest hint that the boss had passed this way. Finally, he had made it to this place, where the scent of the boss was extremely strong. Granted, it wasn't the only Soquili scent around the place; if Cerdi's nose was correct, there were five others around...though one of those five scents was extremely faded and the owner probably hadn't been around in a while.
However, Cerdi had been more than willing to sit and bide his time, waiting for the boss to return. Yet he'd been here for a week, and only seen two Soquilis, neither of which was the boss. One of them was a horned mare decked out in clothing, just like a two-legger; she seemed to be making the teepee place a full-time residence, or at least she'd been around every day he'd been watching. The other, a dark blue winged stallion, had showed up the day before yesterday and taken off at the crack of dawn this morning. Definitely not the boss.
Still, he had never been very good at being patient. The first day of waiting had been ok, as a respite from all his wanderings...but this was getting ridiculous!
And it was about time he did something about it.

Yawning in a ladylike fashion, Elizabeth walked out of the teepee she called home, her mane immaculately curled and her dress as pristine as though she'd been awake for hours. Actually, that was right on target, since as a matter of fact she HAD been awake for hours. She'd just been busy sorting beads to help out Cajji ever since she'd woken up, but it was about time she went out and found some breakfast.
However, she hadn't taken more than a few steps out of the teepee before she'd forgotten all about breakfast. One eyerbrow arched delicately, and for a moment she stood and stared. Stared at the tail and hindquarters of a bright blue creature that was peering into Cajji's tent. But only for a moment.
"A-HEM" Clearing her throat loudly, Elizabeth narrowed her eyes as the hindquarters twitched, then their owner whirled around and the mare found herself face to face with a guilty looking fox. "May I help you?"
For a moment, Cerdi simply stood there, twitching nervously. He hadn't meant to get caught, but damn that mare was quiet when she was moving around! He shouldn't have been so easy to catch off guard, but in his defense he was preoccupied. Well, it wasn't like he was doing anything wrong, so why should he feel guilty?
As the fox stood there, Elizabeth took the opportunity to stare at the fox. Something about him seemed eerily familiar...though she wasn't exactly sure what. "Well???"
Man, what an arrogant mare! Regaining his composure, Cerdi finally decided to just bite the bullet. Maybe she could help him; he certainly wasn't getting anywhere on his own. "'Scuse me, Lady, but have you by any chance seen the Boss around?"
...The Boss?

Elsewhere, a decent distance away from the teepee ~~~~~~~~~~~~
His eyes lifted skywards, Safi strolled through the trees of the forest like one in a trance, looking up but without any sort of focus. In one sense, he was moving in a way similar to that of a sleepwalker, albeit one with open eyes; he moved through the trees without hitting any, but more through sheer luck than any outward attempts.
Granted, some Soquilis might be prone to spacing out, but anyone who knew Safi would have been surprised to see him moving about with that look of complete and utter disinterest on his face. And even without knowing him, those that saw him would probably be able to tell that he had something on his mind.
And so in fact he did. A lot had happened to him in the recent past, things that had made him seriously step back and examine both himself and his life as a whole, to say nothing of how he interacted with people. Sometimes you just needed a reality to check to realize things that were so close you could reach out and touch them...
...Or trip over them.
All at once, Safi's attention was snapped back to the here and now as he all but tripped over something that lay unmoving in the tall grass. Man, he really needed to pay attention more, or he'd wind up tumbling over a stump or something and break his nose! And that would just be unpleasant, wouldn't it?
Regaining both his balance and his composure, Safi peered curiously ahead of him at the whatever-it-was that had tried to send him flying. Odd place to put a stump...but then, it really wasn't a stump now, was it??
Blinking in surprise, Safi stepped forward and parted the grass, staring in surprise as the blue and purple basket that sat nestled in the grass. A basket? What a strange place to put a-
Wait a minute. Almost before the thought was through being processed, Safi had jumped backwards, glancing around warily. It was indeed a strange thing to leave a basket lying around unattended...which meant that there was a strong liklihood that somewhere close by was a possibly irate parent that would likely not like the idea of a strange stallion poking around their basket!
Looking around with some trepidation, Safi was fully prepared to take off in a second should any sign of life occur. However, in spite of the silence of the environment, he heard nothing...nothing at all. And that in and of itself was rather unusual.
His ears perked to any incoming noise, Safi realized shortly that they were alone; just he and the basket. But the basket shouldn't be alone, it should have a parent nearby.
Unless it didn't have any parents.
He'd heard of this phenomenon from a couple of herdmates; in the wild, anything could happen to Soquili, be it predators, accidents, illnesses...anything could happen at any time. And sometimes...sometimes...parents would just abandon their children. For no reason at all. Had something like that happened here?
Looking around again, Safi strained for some sound of life, then sighed. Nothing. But that didn't mean that there might not be someone around who was just taking longer to get back.
In the meantime, though, there was no way he could possibly leave the basket unattended, so for now...he'd stay here. Maybe they could keep each other company, he and the basket...until someone came for it.
If someone was going to.

Yawning, Safi stretched out his stiffened limbs as he lay on the floor of the teepee, wings folded over his back. A slight wince crossed his expression as one leg cracked in complaint, but otherwise he gave no real indication that he was paying attention to himself. Rather, the second that he had consciously realized he was awake, his attention was focused on the blue and purple basket that occupied the place of honor in the middle of the teepee.
And why should he not be paying attention to said basket? Sleeping inside was his already beloved daughter, Saiena, as she had been for many weeks now. This was nothing unusual; when young Soquili were born, they were immediately placed inside the decorative baskets until such a time as they were strong enough to face the world on their own. Though Safi had never had any children of his own, he knew this fact as well as anyone else did and had consequently never worried about the amount of time Saiena spent at rest. He’d been a basket-dweller once himself, after all!
Since his adopting of the little basket, Safi had curtailed his wanderings quite a bit, but up until last week he had left the basket in the care of his friend and herdmate, Elizabeth. Safi himself was a roamer, which was hardly an ideal lifestyle to embrace when one had a basket to care for. But Elizabeth had met him when he returned to the teepee compound with his precious burden, listened to his story, and then proceeded to take the responsibility of caring for the basket herself. Once Saiena hatched was soon enough for Safi to tie himself down, and in the meantime he could still continue with his wanderings.
And so he had, though every couple days he’d made sure to come back and check on things. The two-legger, Cajji, was delighted with the current state of affairs; not only because of the new basket but also because her oldest and dearest Soquili friend was back in the campsite…this week more than ever!
Upon returning from visiting his friend Selene last week, Safi had been met by Elizabeth. The mare informed Safi that the basket seemed ready to hatch any day now, and Safi had been thrown into such a state of euphoria that he simply couldn’t leave. Even if he had had plans, he would have stayed; nothing on earth could have torn him away from the basket’s side. Or at least, that had been the case for the first couple days.
He’d almost forgotten he’d planned on introducing Selene to his daughter, and probably would have completely forgotten if a random comment by Elizabeth hadn’t reminded him. Leaving Saiena in her capable hooves, Safi had high-tailed it out of there, returning with Selene and her daughter Yue the next day to discover his herdmate Zaphiro watching the baby. Regardless of the specific nanny, that meeting had gone well; but now things were quiet and it was just Safi and his daughter.
Well, just Safi and his basket, at the moment.
Sighing softly, Safi pulled his gaze away from the basket and laid his head back down on his forelegs. Everything was still and quiet, just as it had been earlier; there was no hurry at all. Smiling slightly at the thought and his own impatience, the pale stallion closed his eyes and once more drifted off to sleep…

“How many days has it been now?” The words were spoken low, meant to be neither overheard nor wake anybody up. Of course, considering that both the speaker and the speakee were standing a brief ways out of the teepee compound, speaking softly was probably a good idea. And if there was one thing that Zaphiro’s life had taught him, it was that there were times when you just didn’t want to draw attention.
The sapphire blue stallion stood on the shore of the lake about ten minutes’ walk away from the compound. Sparkling starlight caused his iridescent coat to glitter like the jewel he was named for, but tonight he paid it no mind. One might assume that this was due to the fact it was an unchangeable fact, but no; Zaphiro hated the his dramatic appearance, had hated it ever since the first time he’d realized that he was coveted for his looks. A great deal of time had passed since he’d had this realization, but what could have been an isolated incident had turned out to be anything but; now Zaphiro walked warily, unsure if the mares who sought his company desired anything beyond the physical.
Perhaps that was why he got along so well with his current companion. Though a mare, she had never once made him feel like an object; instead, Elizabeth had respected him for his gentlemanly behavior and attitude, embraced him as a friend, and shown him that not all mares were duplicitous. Then again, he doubted that he’d ever really believed that fact anyway, but it was still nice to have external verification.
Right now, the two Soquilis were having a catch-up session, taking advantage of the fact that Safi was looking after Saiena’s basket for the night. Though Elizabeth lived at the compound full-time, Zaphiro, like the rest of their herd, was a wanderer; over two months had passed since he had last passed this way, and though he had returned two days previously, he’d wound up watching the basket he hadn’t even realized existed while Elizabeth dealt with the vicious injuries another of their herdmates, Ladius, had acquired in some fight. Zaphiro hadn’t heard the details, but he’d found that where Ladius was concerned…he preferred not to.
So he’d been watching the basket, and been the responsible adult when Safi returned today, friends in tow. Somehow, Zaphiro had wound up supervising/entertaining Yue, the daughter of Safi’s friend Selene, while the other two cooed over the basket; it had actually been an enjoyable (if exhausting) afternoon, and he’d been honestly sorry when the two mares had left. But not too long afterwards, Elizabeth had finally returned, and the two friends were able to finally catch up with each other.
First, though, they’d left the camp. Safi was keeping an eye on the basket, but it didn’t take a genius to note the dark circles beneath his eyes. He obviously hadn’t gotten much sleep the past few nights, between entertaining and watching the basket. Zaphiro devoutly hoped that he wasn’t planning on burning himself out with the whole parent thing, but Safi had energy to burn and would hopefully settle into a routine soon enough. And if not…well, Elizabeth was a unicorn.
Said horn was especially prominent tonight; the same starlight that made Zaphiro sparkle reflected off of Elizabeth’s polished ivory horn, making it seem to glow with an almost ethereal light. The mare had her head tilted back slightly, eyes closed as she pondered Zaphiro’s question. No specific answer was forthcoming, but she was at least able to offer a little insight. Lowering her muzzle, she shook her head at Zaphiro. “Six since I told Safi, but more specifically than that I can’t say. It’s been over a month since Safi brought her here, but since we have no idea how long she had been sitting out before he found her…”
Elizabeth trailed off with a sigh. It was frustrating, not knowing exactly how old the little one was. Granted, she herself had no actual experience with children, but one liked to have a hunch about how long was normal! Safi was so excited these days; hell, Elizabeth herself was, having come to regard the basket she guarded as something truly precious. But the wait… “Hopefully it won’t be too much longer.”

“My dear fellow…you have much to be proud of.”
A smug smile curving his lips, Guilian murmured the words to himself as he silently flew along through the night sky. He was in a good mood; but then, it was rare to find the relaxed stallion in anything BUT a good mood these days. He’d had his worries when he first came to this territory, but the success he’d had with the local mares since had driven any thought of leaving far, far from his mind.
He should have known better than to doubt himself. He was Guilian, first-class lover of the ladies. Didn’t he have so many begging for him he couldn’t remember their names? Hadn’t he spent virtually every night the past few months in the company of a different delectable dish? Wasn’t he sought after by single and mated alike? Yes, he still had the magic touch…
Mostly. Overwhelming success never quite managed to blot the sting of failure from his mind, and there had been a few of those. Obnoxiously enough two such mares belonged to his own herd; and considering that they were the ONLY two mares in his herd, he didn’t know whether to be more annoyed or amused at that strange turn of affairs.
One of the two was a dark vixen that went by the appallingly inappropriate name of “Ladius”. Hellcat was what he personally referred to her as, though not in an upset fashion. On the contrary, he loved it when mares were as passionate in anger as that one was; passion usually translated into all areas of life, after all, and the passion of anger could easily become the passion of lust. Of course, Ladius had all but ripped into him when they first met, all because she didn’t like his ‘attitude’. He’d never quite figured out what she meant by that, frankly; she hadn’t done a whole lot of explaining, either, merely threatened to ‘rip him a new one’ of he didn’t leave her alone immediately. He’d done so, but only because he wanted her to remember how accommodating he’d been the next time they met…
His other female herdmate, Elizabeth, was a different case entirely. Whereas Ladius was prickly and hostile, Elizabeth was prim, proper, and demure…but just as resistant to his efforts. But he was less inclined to be patient, in her case, which was part of the reason that he was so pissed off at his own behavior in regards to her.
She was an innocent, plain and simple, and he’d moved too fast. She’d actually liked him, enjoyed spending time with him and the like, and then he had to ruin everything by moving without thinking. All it had taken was one second for her previous like to turn to loathing, condemning him for being ‘a lecher’ and threatening to gore him with her horn. So much for things going well!
And the kicker was that Elizabeth was a gorgeous mare; beautifully built, with a pale body, shimmering golden curls, and a horn than shone like polished gold. Guilian was enamored of her to a large extent; he even suspected that his friend Ariston, a self-professed elitist of debauchery, would be willing to make an effort to seduce this mare. That was fine by Guilian…as long as he got to her first!
That was the main reason he was heading in the direction he was. As he glanced downwards, Guilian could see the moonlight reflecting off of the spreading surface of the lake; that sight brought a smile to his lips, for he knew that in mere minutes he’d be arriving back at the teepee compound. And once there…
The smug smile was back again as he pictured the expression on Elizabeth’s face when she saw that he was back. She’d no doubt be angry, surprised, and appalled…but perhaps more. And he meant to take advantage of this chance; this time, he wouldn’t waste his chance.
Nodding to himself, Guilian pulled back his wings as the tips of the teepees came into view and coasted down to the ground. This would be fun, alright, if HE had anything to say about it.

It was a soft sound; so soft that it barely counted as a sound at all. More like a gentle rustle, the sound was that of something light (such as the woven lid of a basket) falling onto something cushiony (like a fur rug).
However, the sound didn't register to Safi, deep in slumber as he was. Nor did he hear the rustling of movement, nor did he hear the sound of small hooves stepping out onto the same fur rug that the basket's lid had so recently fallen on.
He wasn't so out of it that he didn't notice being fallen on, however. A small and high-pitched 'Yeep' accompanied the action, as the newly hatched foal, unsteady on her legs, lost her balance and fell onto the sleeping stallion, her small hooves catching him squarely in the ribs.
"OOF" With a grunt, Safi jerked from sound sleep to wide wakefulness, unable to ignore the hoof in his ribcage. But his thoughts were on discomfort for a mere moment before he was looking at the culprit...and being swept up in utter awe.
From where she was sprawled across Safi's side, a small blue filly blinked owlishly at the white stallion. Small purple leopard spots covered her body, and her purple and white mane was half blocking her face from view...and even in the half-light of the teepee, Safi knew who she was. A glance sideways at the basket merely confirmed that knowledge, and as he turned back to the filly his smile was tender. "Hey Saiena; I was wondering when you were going to finally come out of there!"
At the sound of Safi's voice, the filly visibly started; then slowly, surely, a wide smile crossed her face as well. "I know you...you're my Papa!"
Lifting a wing, Safi gently stroked Saiena's cheek, beaming with pride, amazement, and the sheer euphoria her words brought with them. When he was finally able to reply, his voice was so choked up with emotion that he almost didn't recognize himself. "I sure am, baby girl; I sure am."

Time flies when you're having fun. At least, that's what the old adage says, and as far as adages go, it's proved to be a true one. They also say it drags when you're bored or in a hurry; again, that makes sense.
However, they say nothing about how much time flies when one is in despair, how the world seems to accelerate and days flash past without their prescence really registering to begin with.
I should know...
~~~
Wings folded against his back, Zaphiro stood silently upon the riverbank, staring down into the eddying water at his blurred and swirled reflection. The water wasn't exceptionally fast here, but it was fast enough that all the dark blue stallion could make out of his own face was a somewhat shapeless blue blur.
A blur...that was what he felt like, these days. And what's more, it was all the fault of his own thoughtlessness.
He'd found her. After a lifetime of singledom, a lifetime of searching, a lifetime of propositions and admiring yet rude stares, he'd found HER. The mare of his dreams, the one with which he could truly connect. Even though they'd only spent a grand total of two days together, he KNEW, knew instinctively, that she was the one for him. The one he was destined to share his life with, to have foals with, to grow old with. That sort of feeling couldn't be faked.
Yet he, with one sentence, had possibly driven her out of his life forever.
He couldn't believe his own idiocy, and mulling over it hundreds of times more couldn't change that fact. It just made the sting all the more sharp, reopening the wound every time he'd given it time to close.
Closing his eyes, he could still picture their last bit of time together; lying in the sand of the beach, her muzzle resting lightly against his...
And mere moments later, she had stalked out of his life.
Well, not stalked. Hienna was a graceful mare, not the type who stalked, but regardless of the means of locomotion, she had left in a picture of wounded dignity, clearly wounded by words he hadn't thought through.
And WHY had he done it? To try and HELP things. Talk about your problem situations.
He'd been fine at first. He'd enjoyed their conversations, enjoyed showing her about this new landscape with which she'd been unfamiliar. He'd had fun pondering the various ponderables, and commisserating over the trials of being brilliantly colored and attractive of appearance when all it meant was that it attracted lust. There had just been so much the two had had in common...
And then, when he finally realized he'd been attracted to her, he'd STILL been fine. He'd vowed to take his time, to just act as he had; he knew that she at least enjoyed his company, and his optimism that things could only improve from there had been strong. And things HAD gone well...
Up until the beach. The moment that he had realized that she was interested in him as well, everything had changed.
Which was absolutely crazy. More than anything else, he'd hoped that she would feel the same for him that he felt for her. Yet when she'd stammered and faltered in her speech when complimenting him, it had all clicked. And he himself had fallen apart.
He couldn't recall a time he'd blushed so much, faltered so much; it was like he was an unsure foal all over again, trying to impress and doing all the wrong things.
Well, he certainly had done that! Realizing that things were awkward, he'd decided that it might be best to give Hienna space. Only thing was, when he'd started to make his exit he'd managed to horribly offend Hienna, explaining himself in a way that was ultimately a brush-off (or at least sounded like one). And she had given him one in return.
He'd been so taken aback at her cold words that he had been stunned for a few minutes, trying to figure out what he had done to provoke such a reaction. And by the time he'd figured out what it was, horrified and throughly disgusted with himself, it had been too late. Hienna had already vanished into the woods.
He'd gone after her, of course; if nothing else, he owed her an apology; beyond that, an explanation. But though he'd run as fast as he could down the path they'd come by, he found no trace of purple. And by then, too much time had passed...and he'd lost her.
Since then, he had merely been wandering about, hoping to encounter Hienna and make things right. The trouble was that the world was so large, and since he didn't know where she was...
Days blurred together, darkness and light making barely an imprint on Zaphiro's mind. He didn't know how long it had been, but one thing was clear; no matter how long it took, he had to find her.
