Chel leaned over the counter. "What about this- me and Jackles here play on our own team and if we can still beat all the little munchkins we get rings and a big prize."
"Ah ... um ..." Chel had sensed that this girl was either new or unsatisfied with her job, because she kept texting under the counter when she thought no one was looking. "Let me ask my manager..."
The manager came over and she looked equally nonplussed by the request. "So you want to what?"
"Me and him on a team- if we can take everyone, we win rings and a big thing." She batted her eyelashes a little too much (the girl had makeup on- she was trying to impress, make a good impression of herself- Chel assumed she was hankering to please customers- maybe for a promotion? Who knew-) "Does it help if I say s'my birthday?"
"Hmmm, your birthday? Well maybe we can make an exception this once."
Chel looked to Jack for his consent as well.

He leaned against the counter and considered it. On the one hand, it meant plunging into a world of enemy children he kept nearly stepping on, loud and constant noises, and a laser show he wasn't sure he could get through without the promise of a migraine by its end. On the other, this would be game three, and all throughout game two he had been a bit of a shithead, as Owain had basically put it.
Jack looked to Chel for a moment, pressed his lips together, tried not to think about how much he'd regret this, then nodded. "Yeah, okay." He still didn't have any pep in his voice, but the gleam in his eye was evidence enough that he was alive in there. "Questions: any pain pills on hand? Water?" He pressed both palms into his temples and pushed, attempting to excise as much of his headache out as possible like it was pus.

"You can't take more than four every two hours, my very human friend," she murmured to him in a hushed tone, knocking his side gently.
In a more friendly and louder voice she said, "Water would be awesome dudebro." The employee came back with a small cup of water, the only thing they could get for free. Then she kissed the temple where his hands had been and laughed, leading him and the water cup back towards the lazer tag door.

The cup wasn't enough. He found a water fountain by the lunch area and drained it until he nearly coughed water, donned his vest, and had his game face on proper this time.
"Let's get these bitches, Han."
Mowing down children had never felt so good. He could fire indiscriminately at anyone shorter than Chel and it felt good not to have to restrain himself this time. For all the world, the kids could have been shadows to him—albeit ones he remembered not to swing his gun at this time.

His sour mood from earlier had transitioned from its tired reluctance to something more neutral and focused. The cold water had rejuvenated Jack, if only for the moment. With some coordination with Chel, he managed to duck behind the bulk of the red team's line and shot with extreme prejudice at the sphere. The area provided very little cover for someone of normal height; his only chance was to zigzag while shooting steadily, letting Chel take care of his pursuers.
Just before he was shot out, the sphere lit up and he whooped a victory cry.

Chel was awestruck by Jack's recovery. She padded quietly behind him and covered him the same way she would anyone else, but it was definitely different. Jack's mood set the mood for the twosome.
When he took down the base she was unsure what to do with herself. With Chris she would've given high fives and done their stupid matching victory dance, but with Jack she wasn't sure. So instead she just focused on taking down what few kids she could, letting Jack have his spotlight redemption arc for now.

And what a spotlight redemption arc it was.
Whether it was his own superstition about the number three, his decision to not be an active asswipe, getting a fresh drink of water, or some combination of the three, Jack couldn't be kept down. The lights still got to him from time to time, leaving pockets of time for the red and yellow teams to encroach on their territory. During these times he took to finding a niche on higher ground and mercilessly gunning down opponents down when they thought they had a clear shot at their sphere, then moving on before he could be flushed out of hiding.
In passing he slapped Chel's back, taking out a few of them from below the grating as he had seen her do earlier. This game was so much easier when he wasn't forced to deal with anyone other than who had had fought with and trusted, and it showed. He would have been smiling if his head didn't hurt and if it also wasn't in the game.
"Hope you know what kind of plushie you like."

And in return Chel slapped Jack's a**. "You gotta pick up a runic gun sometime from the vault. S'a good look on ya." She snorted as a kid took out her vest from the distraction.
Part of her cringed internally as she wondered if Jack was really doing this for her and the stuffed animal or if it was pride. Tenebrae told her one, and she had to cling to the other.
"You doin' fine on yer own, maybe I should just sit back here and admire the view," she told him with a snort, putting the gun on her shoulder and shooting a kid that was trying to crawl over the wall as she'd done before. Chel was a bad seed.

"I guess so," he agreed with a cocky smile.
Naturally this invited his inevitable downfall, as all good thing came to an end. The entire red team decided to swarm him after someone yelled they had only a few minutes left of the game. One minute he was fine, the next there were a good ten or so kids at his legs, overtaking him like ants.
His instinct was to kick slice and stab, but with Owain on high alert Jack curbed it to just shooting who he could before he was overwhelmed. The children cheered as they took down the giant in retaliation for the base kill earlier.

Chel was very tempted to drag him to a darker corner of the room, forget the bet and have her way with him there, but then children attacked and that was a million times more entertaining than kissing Jack ever would have been. She could see the pure desolation in his face as he resisted kicking them off- Chel had to give him props, she probably would have.
Instead she hung back on a boulder, enjoying the show and doing absolutely nothing to help him out of the pile. He'd earned it.
Sirens sounded and Chel finally said, "Alright, alright, games over pipsqueaks." The children scattered and Chel offered Jack a hand up. "C'mon child whisperer. Let's go get our s**t."

All he could see for a moment was bright flashing lights and the devilish faces of children, but thankfully they cleared before his head exploded. Grimacing, he took Chel's hand, helped himself up, and decided not to say a damn word about that embarrassing display.
At least they won. The children were a mixture of awe, uncaring, and accusing of cheating somehow. Jack gestured for Chel to pick whatever she wanted and leaned on the counter again, his thumbs on his temples and the rest of the fingers over his eyes as he tried to overcome his redoubled headache with deep breaths and pressure.

Chel was honestly more excited about the rings. She loved stuffed animals and she loved it even more that Jack had battled near-death (at least it better have been near death from the way he was acting like a baby), but honestly stuffed cute things were more up Abbi's alley.
When she returned to Jack's side she was carrying a pink pig over her head, one with a stupid expression that she thought would make Chris laugh. It had it's tongue stuck out to the side and it looked ridiculous. More importantly she had a cheap plastic ring on her pinkie finger (it wouldn't fit on any of her other fingers). She lowered the pig and held out her hand to Jack- a lovely blue ring with a plastic butterfly on it.
"Jack Hawthorn," she said with a fluorish that entertained her. "Will you do me the honor of being my not-boyfriend until small children do us part??" She wiggled the pig's little feet at him for extra effect. Then she started laughing at her own joke, because Chel had no sense of tact.

He wasn't going to smile. He wasn't going to smile. He wasn't damn it.
Jack tried rolling his eyes to balance it out, but that just hurt him in the end and he immediately regretted it. "You mean until you abandon me to them," he groused as he took the ring and tried it on his pinkie as well. "Great reminder: children are ******** evil. I'd rather fight an abomination of my nightmares than look at another one."

"Yeah well, knowing Deus that can easily be arranged." She put a hand on his shoulder and stroked the same way Chris used to do for her when she was throwing up over the toilet. She suddenly had ridiculous respect for Chris. "You don't look hot, man. Wanna head home?"
She held out the pig and wiggled it again. "I gotta find a home for this guy anyways."
