The daughter of the Workaholic

She felt, in a small way, like she should have been surprised when her father pulled out the contract. And yet, she was not. His whole life was built around contracts, and honesty seeing it put into use, she agreed that they could be very useful. And since she was going to law school, potentially, she had to pay closer attention to them then she had in the past. They were a powerful tool, she could see that now. The boy signed the document, and looked terrified the entire time. Not that she necessarily felt bad for him, after all this was all his doing. She had been polite and given him plenty of time. Fate always plays its cards sooner or later. What goes around, comes around. She had always thought this to be true, and now she knew it was. She followed her father out the door and back towards the car, remaining silent. After all, not every situation calls for vigorous conversation or commentary. Some things are better left unsaid. And that was exactly what she did, as she got into the car. She remained silent. She let the situation speak for itself.

But she did breathe a small sigh of relief. It was a tremendous feeling, to be free. And even though it was just one person, it was still a good feeling. She had waited so long to be free from this, and now it was happening. Even if she would never have necessarily made it happen herself. She never wanted to accidentally become a bully, something she was partially afraid would happen if she decided to handle the matter. She wanted to be better then them, have a higher standing morally. And somehow she felt like she still had this. She had not lowered to their level. She had not called the police, though technically she could have. After all, she was under eighteen. The photo was revealing. She could have cause quite a stir, but that would have been bad for everyone involved, also. It might have affected her father's business, or her future, and that was not something she wanted. A tarnished name was a curse for any business person, and she didn't want that to happen. Being a victim was almost as bad as being the bully when it came to rumors.

As they reached the car his phone started ringing, he gestured for Zarah to get in while he took the call. It wasn't very long, it was just Frankie letting him know his 'friends' had gone above and beyond with their assignment. Frankie was Steven's contact in the world of organised crime, he carried a little weight but knew how to pay his dues and get along with people. He was useful and both parties enjoyed their mutual agreements. He climbed inside the car and started the engine. "That was Frankie, Clark and Roy are waiting for us inside their apartment. His men are waiting for us there." He wasn't morally bankrupt he knew that dealing with organised crime syndicates was bad but on the other hand they could do things that he couldn't more efficient and with less mess. Since her friends incident she probably didn't want to associate with criminals but on Stratos it was unfortunately a way of life more than simple acts of desperation. "Just a heads up for this next one, I don't know what state we'll find the girls in and your free to wait outside if you don't think you can handle it." He didn't try to sugar coat it, she was being exposed to his professional half and while the family man was nice and jolly, neither of those things were needed in running a successful consultancy agency.

It took her a moment to process that information. The girls had been essentially, possibly, beaten or roughed up. Did this technically count as her fault? She's the one who said something, but they are the ones who started it all. And then the other question came, could she bare to face them if they were in some way hurt? That was the real question at hand. As they drove, she really had to think about it. Could she handle it? "I will go." She said softly. Sure she'd never directly been exposed to this side of it, but there was something to be said about the strength someone carries in their eyes. In her father, she had always seen this. And the way he reacted to the news of Kelsi and her joke about not letting thugs get to her, had told her much. Her father was not a weak man, and now she knew that he had connections within the crime world. Considering what happened to Kelsi, she was a bit afraid but at the same time, deep down, she got some kind of rush she could not explain. She didn't understand it at all, and so she looked away towards the window.

"Alright. Its your choice."
He sighed, he didn't like exposing Zarah to this, in fact he didn't really like the idea of exposing anyone to this kind of darkness but needs must. He flicked on the indicator and pulled up outside of the apartment, he knew the address because he helped the previous owner sell the place, but it would have been easy enough for him to find out their addresses, as simple as typing their names into the internet. The outside was reality normal, the unmarked sedan that Frankie's men had arrived in was parked out front and but nothing else really stood out. As he stepped out of the car he got a phone call and despite wanting to barge right in and confront the girls he did still have a business to run. "Hello, Steven Harcrow... Uh, huh. I understand but its not going to happen." He rolled his eyes as the person on the other end seemed to flip his lid and go crazy. He held it away from his face for a second. "Tenenbaum incident." The voice stopped and was replaced by a dial tone. "We don't have long with these two, they have protection from someone important. I bought us a little time but it should be more than enough." He smiled and opened the door, the lock had been broken off by some sort of force. The scene inside the house was the complete polar opposite from the one outside, everything was a mess, painting had been slashed, furniture smashed and broken. Frankie's men stood at the end of the hallway guarding a closed door. There was marks on the floor where someone had been dragged but surprisingly little blood for this kind of home invasion.

"I know who." She said, her eyes shifting over to her father. She'd memorized every detail of these people's lives. "Know thine enemy." She said softly, almost inaudible as she got to the door of the house.

She didn't know anything about this type of world. Her parents had hidden from her, but her parents were both much closer to this world then she had ever realized. Her father was clearly involved in it, and her beloved mother? Her maternal family was composed of all criminals, which of course she had never been told. In fact, her mother had refused to ever talk about her maternal family, and so she knew nothing. Otherwise she might understand why in some dark way this fascinated her. She who had never harmed a soul. With a kind heart and generosity, was somehow entranced by this. As they walked through the house, she found herself without fear. In fact, she was completely calm. She moved her hands, not touching anything, but simply taking it all in. With a neutral expression she moved up down the hallway towards the closed door.

She knocked lightly on the door as she opened it. The moment she opened the door, she saw the men, and also the girls. But she simply stared at them. The girls looked terrified, but Zarah...she looked distant. Taking a step forward, she stared at the girls. She had been so afraid that day when they had cornered her, so she knew what it was they were feeling, and yet there was no pity in her heart for them. She'd pitied the father of the boy, but not these girls. Stepping away from them, she turned away and went towards her father. But all in all the scene she was staring at was not pretty.

Steven scratched his chin and wandered about the flat, it was quite spacey, they had done a lot more with the place than his former client. He had chosen to take a less direct route and give some hand signals to the girls keepers, the less that was said aloud between the two groups of intruders the better. The girls were gagged, blindfolded and tied to a chair in the middle of the living room, all the furniture that usually occupied the space was pushed up against the walls and a table with a set of assorted tools was set up next to them, he had asked Frankie to scare them and nothing was more unsettling than a table of tools, they had presumably already been shown them and knew they were in for it. After hearing the doors the two started moaning through their gags presumably in a bid to explain the situation or scream. "Don't you just love it when they scream." He gestured for one of the men to remove the blindfolds with a smile, he took little pleasure in hurting people but his threats would stick if he at least pretended he knew what he was doing. "Hello ladies, you remember me from the house sale right? And you must certainly remember my daughter here right?" The girls were quiet for a moment while their eyes adjusted to the light but then they started freaking out and violently shaking in bids to escape. Steven shook his head, clearly annoyed by their actions, having them both in the same room would prove difficult. "Alright, we'll do it your way. Take the blond next door with..." He ran his hand across the knives and other torture devices and finally rested it on a pair of brass knuckles. "Be creative, I'll come through shortly." The taller of the two men gabbed Clark's chair and dragged her away into the next room, closing the door behind them. Steven watched Roy's reaction trying to work out if she was close to breaking yet. "You ready to be civil and answer my questions?" He reached out for Zarah, he knew seeing this was a bit much for most people and he wanted to let her know it was okay. That being the case it was still better that she stayed by him and not venture next door, else they break the illusion.

She listened to the muffled cries against the gags, but felt nothing. It surprised her, and any emotion that played on her face, was a reflection of her surprise, nothing more. Glancing towards her father and he outstretched his hand, she merely nodded. She was alright, and she was not going anywhere. "Please be polite to my father. " She said softly to the girl. "Civility and politeness go hand in hand." She suggested. She appeared an angel, standing there behind her father, her face an expression of calmness and kindness. But there was an empty look behind her eyes. She had merely spoken to remind the girl that there was a way out of this. That she had to look past her fear and see the logical answer to the problem. They had created this issue and there was a way to fix it, with less damage. And it was also a way of saying that Zarah would offer them no help should they choose to remain silent or be stubborn.

"You'd be wise to keep that in mind." He nodded slightly and her gag was removed, it seemed the message had sunk in as instead of trying to cry for help she instead kept quiet. "Good girl, perhaps now we can make some progress." He took out his phone and scrolled through his contacts, she was somewhere near the bottom, he had kept her number from the sale of the house just in case. He dialled and hers started buzzing, it was close under some feathers from a cushion that had been torn up. "Password?" He asked, might as well start with something simple, he was sure the girl was already aware of what this was about by Zarah's presence. "Make a sideways M and then connect it to the start." Luckily he got It right on his first attempt but he was prepared to hit her if he had failed. It was a matter of principle not something he would enjoy. He skimmed through her pictures and found the one in question. "You make any copies?" He pointed at the screen. "Put it on your computer, print anything out?" The girl hesitated before answering. "No" He nodded and then struck her face, just once, just to make it perfectly clear that he wasn't playing around. "I don't like being lied to. Again, did you make copies?" This time she didn't hesitate, nor she try anything funny. "Yes, I saved it on my computer, I was going to send it out on graduation." He made a mental not that he'd need to take that before they went. He took a moment to make a contract with her, it was very similar to the other one with the same punishment of death. He did add a little something that said that if she did the same thing to anyone else and she would receive another home invasion.

He left Roy alone with her guard and moved into the next room, Clark was still tied to her chair while her keeper was a little further in, from the looks of it they hadn't started. "She tell you who her boyfriend is I take it?" He nodded to the door. "If its too hot, get out of the fire." He would have like for the man to stay and play witness like usual if anything went wrong but he was working against the clock and didn't have time to play nice. "But please keep in mind I will let Frankie know what you decide." The man looked truly worried and against what seemed like his better judgement he stayed. "You good for this?" The man nodded and Steven shook his head having avoided a minor disaster.

She had been a little shocked when her father had hit her, but not in the bad way. In some sick way it took away the pain she'd carried around. The humiliation. Stepping away she followed her father into the next room where the girl awaited. She reached out and touched her father's shoulder. It only hesitated for a moment, before she smiled and looked over at the girl. She'd wanted to keep the illusion and still be there for the man. She offered a smile, and looked back towards the girl, once she had made her way to Frankie. But once she got over there, she spoke towards her father. "Her boyfriend took the original photo, right? You were so impressed with his photography skills." She said.

"Not that one." He was convinced she would have more than one. "We're talking about the don of a minor family. You think students can afford a place like this?" That was the reason why they were working against the clock, because at any moment he might decide that he could swarm the place with enough people to save the girl and cover his own a**. "Marco thinks its a big risk going against them but on the other hand he's not paid to think and should just do as he's told." He picked a roll of duck tape off of the side and threw it over to the guard, he suspected betrayal and wanted to make sure she didn't suddenly spring up as soon as he got close. "Tape her back to the chair." He looked over at Zarah and shrugged, this would have been a simple in an out job if they hadn't decided to start talking to one another. He passed Roy's phone to her. "Would you be so kind as to find her phone? Should be somewhere around here. If you spot that computer let me know." He looked back at Clark who was safely tied to the chair again. "No screaming, you hear. Gag off." She took a deep breath and he waved his hand for the gag to go back in.

Okay, now she was a little frustrated. And to see little Zarah, who never got angry, have a flash of anger was really unique. She was angry because now she knew what had given the girl the inspiration to start picking on her in the first place. She felt that she was invisible, above harm and reproach. Oh, dark thoughts that never existed before, swarmed in Zarah's head. She was angry, but with her father here, she was able to keep grounded. Why in the world was she having so much trouble with something she had never dealt with before? it was confusing and overwhelming. Stepping away she went towards the side of the room, where some papers were strewn about. Picking a few up, she let her father handle things, as she took careful note to what she was seeing. Including a few things that she was sure that the girl would not have wanted her to see.

Steven watched the girl for a moment trying to decide if taking off the gag would be a waste of time or not. Since Zarah hadn't managed to find the phone and he had no way of finding it in the mess of an apartment he had to wait. While he waited he might as well make the girl a little more pliable, there was clearly a breakdown in communication somewhere that needed to be resolved before she would answer his questions. "Look, Clarissa, I know you think because your screwing half the city I wont lay a hand on you, and normally you'd be correct, I really don't like getting involved in politics. But you hurt my daughter over there and as a result I feel its only right that I hurt you." He held up his finger and then went to fetch one of the torture devices from the previous room, he returned with a hand drill, he had seen it and really wanted to play with it. "Zarah, have you made any progress with that phone?" Usually it would have been integral to the act and he would prefer not to start without it, buts needs must and he decided to try a different technique. "Ah, well, while she's busy with that we'll have our talk. You took a picture of her, remember?" She looked at him wide eyed for a second, frozen with fear until he turned the crank and she suddenly started nodding. "Good. Did you make any copies, print something off or send it to anyone?" She nodded again, the tried to talk with the gag in her mouth. He held up his hand and then politely removed the cloth. "I got a new phone and moved everything to my compu-..." He put the cloth back having heard enough. He presented her with a copy of the contract hand had her sign it and then stepped away. "Marco, get Polo and shove the girls in the walk in closet. Zarah, have you found the computers, we need to go." He pointed at the door.

She had managed to find the phone, but not the computers. "Phone, nix on the computers." She said tossing him the phone as she quickly moved towards the door. The phone was unlocked, through some arrogant miracle. It meant less work for them. Less work was great, because they needed to get going. They really did. They had more things to do, less involving this situation. She looked over at Frankie for a moment and smiled at him, but of course she was very careful to only do it when it was impossible for the girl to have seen it.

"Well, she did say she got a new phone." He reasoned quietly to himself before pulling a wire from his coat and connecting their phones, it took a moment or so for him to bypass her firewalls, scramble her laptop and every other device they were connected to and then to throw it aside. He walked out into the Hall where Frankie was waiting for him, "We're going to make ourselves scarce, say hello to the wife for me and give me a call if you need your taxes doing again." He patted him on the shoulder and slip a wad of cash in his pocket; there were favours on Stratos that used power or money, since he lacked real power he had to make up for it with money but that was fine. "Zarah, come on." He didn't really like the idea of her hanging around with Frankie or his men, in fact if this whole thing couldn't have been used to teach life lessons he would have insisted she stayed in the car and listened to the radio. The was a black car waiting for them outside, its owner made their presence know by revving its engine then left. "Another enemy for the list. You'd think I was trying to get the city to send someone after me." He smiled but he didn't look happy as he did. "Who's left? I really just put everything into getting the easy ones. Did you say one transferred, where'd they go?" He opened the car door and climbed inside.

Once they were back at the car, she spoke. "Yes, one transferred, but lets not dad. Please , let's just go. Im not feeling well and Im sure that he's already in a bit of a mess. His partners in crime are vanquished and the threat is gone. Im okay, lets just get on with our lives. Please." Really she was just trying to distance herself from something that had given her some sick rush. She wanted to see more, to involve herself more, and she could not allow that. You are a law abiding citizen, Zarah. You are a good girl, and not a criminal. You cannot allows yourself to be tempted. She turned to look out the window. "Mercy, father. Mercy for just one." She said softly, thinking about how much she could really do to the lad. But she was going to have to force herself not to do anything. To stay away, uninvolved.
