Closing her eyes as Falsetto spoke of princes that are hard to find, Margaery bit her lip. Harder than most to find, but I found two, and the Stranger took them from me. It seemed so long ago, but she could still see them in her sleep - the delicate fronds of frosty wings, and pale feathers set against a pale neck. She had prayed for them tonight.

Swallowing, Margaery fought back tears as Falsetto kept speaking. I have known all but the stolen moments. "I have been told thus," she said, and the sad smile came back. Seven hells, how many times? Never a stolen moment, always a sincere one. But what is honor when death steals it from you? She laughed again, and a tear rolled down her cheek. "I found my prince. Two, actually." Her voice made her stop, swollen with tears. Stop this madness. "The first was killed before we could speak of such things, but not before I had fallen in love with him. The second..." Her muzzle twitched up in frustration with herself, baring her soul to a stranger. But Falsetto had asked, and Margaery could not provide a dishonest answer. Not when she had asked for honesty. "The second was killed, and we had verily betrothed ourselves to one another. He told me I made him better, but it was he that made me better. I would have found my way home again with him." Gods, let this be done with.

The pain came off of Margaery in waves. She had lost a lot. But she had had it once. That meant something. False lifted from her pillows and came closer to Margaery to recline. Close enough that if Margaery wanted to bridge the gap and seek a comforting embrace she could--but not too imposing if she didn't want her to be that near.

"But you were loved, that means something. Truly, deeply, madly loved." She looked up at the soft brown eyes that looked as though tears would drip from them soon. Those eyes reminded her of wet cool sand, refreshing and beautiful in a dry, sparse desert. "Maybe there may come another Prince, or Princess. The ones you loved and lost cannot be replaced, but what they were does not cease to exist. Nothing can entirely be destroyed, only transformed. Maybe there is hope for us both Margaery. Maybe one day you will look into eyes that you feel you know and find love again."

Her voice was soft, "I hope you can. For your sake and the hope it would bring others such as I."

Margaery stared down at the pillow that blocked her line of sight to the floor as Falsetto moved nearer to her. It was satiny, soft and cool beneath her skin. Margaery made no move, not even to look up as the other mare settled closely by. Falsetto's voice, though, toward the end, was what made her look up. Falsetto's eyes reminded her of wild strawberries, sweet and bright. They reminded her of roses, too, so many kinds of roses. "Perhaps," said Margaery, but something flared within her. How many times had another said those words to her? And all of them had slid over her skin as oil over water. But something... Something about this mare made the words seem true.

Did she really want another prince, though? The Stranger seemed to take all of them before it was their time to be returned to the earth. Even the great princes of the Cerynei Lands had been lost. Was it worth trying to find another - another who would step in front of her in the name of honor, but never let her fight for herself? They had ben honorable, they had been valiant, and they had died.

Margaery turned from her thoughts and back to Falsetto. "But perhaps I went looking in the wrong places. I sought out what my family told me was the kind of prince I was destined for, but what of the others out there? Surely everyone holds princely qualities. Surely everyone is worth being shown love." Margaery frowned. "I was told so my whole life, but I listened to the talesof great loves between the special princes and yheir ladies, instead.

False listened to the sorrow in Margaery's voice. Her words were heavy with loss. "Who can say where to look? One can find love in the mountains or the desert, the meadows or the waters. You can find it with one you thought was an enemy or one who is the best of friends with you." False watched the firelight dance on the walls of her tents like a shadow show.

"Great love seems to me, to be what you make it and who you want to make it with. Why is the love story of two paupers falling in love less than a king marrying a nobody? One will be sung about, and the other not. But does it mean their love is less? Who are we to judge?"

She thought about her encounters with others, the ways she had witnessed love and devotion, hate and rage. "Life is not a song. We must all learn that or never be happy."

But who was she to talk? She was broken and desolate, never happy in one place for long. Always, always searching for a place or person to call home.

"Life is not a song," Margaery murmured in agreement. How many tales of unconventional love - or even unsung love, as Falsetto said? - had passed through Highgarden when she had been there? How many travelers had come with another, a lover and a child? Their loves had been beautiful, but it was still the love of a prince that Margaery had sought out. A Cerynei prince with flutter wings. She shook her head at herself. Life is not a song.

Carefully and quietly, Margaery turned back to Falsetto, her tears drying in silvery lines on her cheeks. "Have you been truly loved?" she asked softly. How else could Falsetto speak so strongly of love than if she had been loved once?

The well of sorrow opened up in her. It was a chasm she had kept closed as much as she could, a terrible memory she kept buried. But now it was being brought into the light, straining to escape back to the darkness.

"I did once," her voice broke like a scared child. "She was Winter. All cold edges and glittering snow. Her eyes were so blue you could drown in them, get lost in the infinite sky. And I melted her into warmth and happiness, a beautiful bliss that I didn't know existed."

She closed her eyes, thinking of the white hair that hung long and heavy down her first, her only love's back. There were intricate patterns on her skin that she had spent hours tracing and memorizing, a sweet path that ended in the bliss of her eyes if you followed it right.

"A season of love is not enough though. It only whets the appetite and makes you know what you have missed. Gods, how I loved her. She held my heart in her talon. The more she squeezed, the harder it beat--the more I loved her. Then she shattered it as though it was made of glass. She took everything I had. Ice can burn as much as fire. She taught me that. But even now," her voice turned bitter. "When I hear her name, parts of me melt that no one else has made melt before. So sweet and soft a name for someone so cold and hard."

Her voice was soft as heartbreak, the stillness surrounding her and crushing her lungs. "Elena."

Margaery was mildly surprised when Falsetto said that not only her first had been a she, but that the mare had had talons - but, as Falsetto had said, loving a soul meant more than a gender or appearance. And that, as she thought about what had been said about Knochen, didn't seem to make sense. Falsetto had not said she loved him, nor even that she liked him, and yet, she had called him paramour.

Her story, though, and the deep melancholy that came with it, made all that thought stop. "She hurt you deeply," murmured Margaery, scooting carefully closer in case the nearness of her presence might offer some comfort. "How long ago? She gently probed. Whatever had happened - if this was the root of Falsetto's loneliness - Margaery could not lose an opportunity to help her overcome it, if that was what she needed.

Falsetto felt Margaery's move closer, but the pain in her heart kept her still. With the mere mention of Elena's name, it was like shattering her heart again. My heart is made of glass. I am a broken thing. "It was two years ago last winter. When the cold came, she left. She took all the warmth with her. It feels like hours ago sometimes and sometimes it feels like century."

I do not love you. I never have. The words echoed in her mind. The look on Elena's face as she said it. She would never forget that look. The snow fell softly outside her tent and Elena was lost to her. Gone with the winter.

"I hate the cold," Falsetto said coming back to herself. Her eyes burned, but she did her best not to cry. "In the desert, I'll never have to be cold again."

"Two years is a long time to carry shards of a broken heart," she murmured, "but you're right. Here, you don't have to be cold again, but you have not been warm, either." Peering up into Falesetto's eyes, Margaery searched them. "You've tried to block out the cold with heat, but it found its way in, anyway. Is there a way to seal the drafts so they can't tamper with your temperature anymore?" Too long a metaphor. Margaery sighed. "She has gone, and you have moved on, literally, by the looks of it." Carefully, Margaery brushed her nose against False's shoulder in a gesture of kindness. "Do you know how to let your heart put itself back together?"

But it did not feel so long and yet, not long enough. The touch of Margaery's nose on her shoulder sparked inside of her. It was like a candle in the dark illuminating your world. False leaned her head over to Margaery.

"I do not know how to mend it. I have moved on physically, a body gets lonely. But they are pale imitations to what I had. Imagine someone taking your beautiful necklace and giving you a painted one. At first it looks fine, beautiful maybe even the same. But then as you wear it, it fades and breaks because it's cheaply made. It's like that. All those nights making myself believe that it could be real. A soul gets lonely, but after I'm lonelier still."

"What would happen if you were to stop seeking the company of others for a while and start seeking yourself?" Margaery asked, her eyes blinking softly at false. The metaphor she used made sense to her in theory, but she did not know the experience. Her upbringing had taught her that the only company of stallions she ought to keep were brothers and princely suitors, lest a child who would not belong in Highgarden came into the world. But after the experiences she had had, after the loneliness of heart she had gone through, resigning herself to wait for a prince to come to her, if there was one out there... It had left her time four more important tasks, ones that made her feel fulfilled. "Is it good for you to always be in the UPS and downs of these relationships?"
PostPosted: Mon Jun 22, 2015 8:08 pm

"Seek myself?" Falsetto whispered. "What does that even mean?" What though, was a life without passion? It was what she craved. "The ups and downs are what makes it worth it. You can't enjoy the ups if you've never been through the downs. Your greatest joy is sweeter because of your worse moments." She didn't know how to find herself without the help of others. Wasn't happiness in another what you were supposed to look for?

Something akin to fury lit in her gut. Ups and downs always felt the worse to her; she had felt the lowest downs anyone could possibly go to, highs tall as the mountains. The downs were what stuck around. She had enjoyed her elated moments, but what she longed for was steady contentment - what everyone should long for was contentment. Putting oneself through downs just to feel the ups seemed unhealthful. "Seeking yourself means finding things that benefit you that you like. It means finding things that bring you joy that won't also eventually come back to haunt you. Simple things, little things. Not all the world is ups and downs, and nor should it be. Highs ever come with lows. The middle ground is the smoothest path, and the one you should seek to walk." Getting to her feet, Margaery shook herself, adjusted her tabards, and looked down at the mare. "It was a lesson I had to learn the hard way, when I went looking for those princes." Her eyes narrowed. "You should be able to make yourself happy, not rely on another person to do it for you."

Part of her wanted to leave, to run away - those were severe statements she'd just made, and she'd almost outed much more of her past than she ever should to a stranger. But this mare... She felt old beside her, old with experiences that should have put her in her grave. If she had wisdom to impart, she should share it, even if she was chased away with a torch or ears were closed to it. Someday, it might have an effect. Not now, maybe, but someday.

Margaery stood frozen to the spot, waiting for the mare to either explode at her - as she seemed well capable of doing - or for her to renew the invitation of hospitality. Somehow, though, Margaery was near certain she'd overstayed her welcome.

Margaery spit the words at her and the room felt too cold suddenly as though the fire had gone out of it. The ice of Margaery's words dripped down her skin and stung like frozen needles. The other mare was on her feet, and she could see the cold, proud set of the girl's head.

All of the aching, bitter cold things that came to her mind froze in her mouth as she looked at her. It was a lesson I had to learn the hard way.

What had someone done to her?

False looked away. The last thing Margaery would want was her pity, she knew that. "I have kept you overlong when you probably wanted to leave hours ago." She paused, her mouth dry. "It'd never occurred to me that I could be happy with just myself. That that could be enough." She shrugged, the bells tinkling softly.

She wanted to ask Margaery to stay a little longer, to talk with her some. It would do them both good. But she would not press her. This was the lesson Margaery was teaching her. Love yourself, trust yourself. Find yourself.

False didn't need to ask Margaery anything to find herself. It was a sad thought, but at the same time she could see the truth in it. The lesson that Margaery was imparting half without meaning to.

False had to let her go instead of asking her to stay with her awhile longer so she would not be alone. If she could not bear being alone with herself, than how could another?

Her eyebrows raised at the words the mare said next. She couldn't help it - it surprised her. Had she just accepted the words that Margaery had, possibly somewhat purposefully, thrown in her face? Had they truly taken root so quickly? It felt almost a miracle, as if the Mother's hoof had guided her. "I..." she began, near speechless at False's admission. "Thank you for your hospitality, and I wish you luck."

After a moment of lingering, watching the mare who had had this sudden change of heart, Margaery headed for the doorway. She hesitated for a moment, her tail flicking tentatively. "Let me know if you ever would like to talk. I assume you will be able to track me down, if you have been following the movements of the khalasar." Nodding a goodbye to her, Margaery stepped out of the tent.
