[ Sinter became sheepish as Comata called him on his whining. Under normal circumstances, he would be horrified by his insolence in the presence of highbloods. But his arms were really, really tired.

"Um... Right. Sorry."

He distracted himself from his embarrassment by replying to Tamiya. "Seems like a practical time as any to take a break. The lusus is probably already bleeding out at this rate. Hardly needs any encouragement from us in that department."

...And almost as though it had heard him, the lusus came running back again.

Sinter was becoming comfortable with the lusus's persistence. He even rolled his eyes as he lobbed his net. Unfortunately the inverse appeared to be happening for Tamiya. Sinter stiffened at her bizarre keening.

"Of course it's angry! We've spent all night stabbing it! The sooner we can catch it, the sooner we can stop hurting it and it'll calm down!"

Tamiya's panicking was panicking Sinter. He thought this was obvious!

"I mean really, with how it keeps coming back to us, you'd think it's a sign we're supposed to be the ones to catch it!"

Or the more accurate train of thought: with all their encounters with the lusus, Sinter felt like they deserved to be the ones to catch it. He'd be pissed if some other group swooped in and claimed all the glory when their team had done so much of the legwork.

[Kyle was asleep, yep!]

Alexin whooped as the lusus returned twice, and attempted to throw their net both times - only to fail and get tangled in it. Grumbling they began to untangle themselves, chiming in on the conversation as they did so.

"Weapons for kids would be AWESOME."

And then for some reason Tamiya started panicking? They sighed.

"Guys calm down -- eeep!"
The eep was as the lusus charged towards them in particular and they dived out the way, desperately tossing the net as they did so.

REFRESHING REST POST

Everyone in your group is well rested. Your group recovers three stamina, to a maximum of five! Your group recovers 13 hp, if you were previously at zero!

Current Dice Roll Table:
Quote:

1,1
The lusus charges past!
1,2

A floppy bouncebeast is no stranger to the desert, and when one bounces into your group’s path you’re suddenly struck with an idea. The lusus has been running wild for a while now… It could probably use a snack.
Your group has captured a live bouncebeast! If the next 2D4 roll result is not to fight the lusus, the group can decide to use the bouncebeast to attract it to their location instead. Your roll will be treated as though it was originally a lusus encounter. The live bouncebeast can only be used once, and the group can only carry one live bouncebeast with them at a time.

A sudden cold snap whisks through the desert. There’s a n** in our nose, a chill in your bones and your cheeks are just a little more vibrant in hue. Fortunately, it doesn’t seem to be much more than a quick blast of frigid air.
This weather effect will remain in play until the next dice are rolled.

Something glinting over a bluff catches your eye. A burrow in the side of the dune yields a bounty of shining golden beetles! And as they say, lucky beetles mean good fortune (and megabux$$$).
Each member of the group has acquired 1 lucky beetle that can be redeemed at the end of the meta for a variety of rewards. You cannot carry any more than 5 lucky beetles total; if you run into this encounter more than 5 times, you cannot collect any more.

Uh oh. The ground rumbles suddenly. Not again! Sure enough, after a moment the rough shaking of the ground resumes with surprising force. It’s an earthquake!
This weather effect will remain in play until a 2, 3, 4, or 5 are rolled on a D6.

An overenthusiastic bouncebeast hops into view. You don’t pay it any mind at first, but when it starts to get closer—and closer—you realize that spring is in the air. The lovestruck beast assaults your group!
The bouncebeast has 1 HP, but has a +1 to avoid being hit (you will need to roll a 4 or above to hit). Every post in which the lovestruck bouncebeast has not been defeated incurs 1 point of damage to the group (as it wounds the group’s dignity in trying to hump their legs).

There’s little time to get to higher ground as a surging wave of water sweeps through the plains. Aided by a localized storm system, the flash flood rolls through quickly and viciously.
This weather effect will remain in play until a 2, 3, 4, or 5 are rolled on a D6.

The peace in the desert seemed too good to be true. Turns out that nice quiet spell was just the calm before the storm – or maybe all of the other weather effects were just too busy getting sucked in to that giant TORNADO straight ahead to do you any harm.
This weather effect will remain in play until a 1 or a 6 are rolled on a D6.

The groan 'Comuta' let out was of a troll who was getting tired of single handedly bringing down a fully grown lusus. And the purpleblood was having a nervous breakdown? Regina had a large soft spot for her own caste, but sometimes they could be a little too bizarre for her tastes. "Someone make sure she doesn't like - bite her tongue off or something. I don't want to be responsible for bringing back an injured purpleblood wiggler, got it?" Standing up stiffly from where she had taken a moment to sit down, she hurriedly charged towards the netted lusus.

Regina huffed tiredly and tried to get her footing in the shifting and unstable sand. It was kind of like fighting underwater, if you were insane and dumb and had never actually fought underwater before what the heck. Thinking longingly of the Four Fronds beach, she kept swinging.

"Wagh!" Tiredness lead to slow reflexes, and Regina narrowly avoided getting hit in the face with one of those rear hoofs. If that happened, she would probably end up being called the 'Pancake Queen' for the rest of her life. On account of her face being flat.

Finally, the lusus kicked off all three nets, entangling them together as it struggled upright. Not even sheathing her sword, Regina eyed it threateningly. "Are you gonna run, or do I actually have to chase you off?" Her patience was wearing thin. She wanted a rest. If necessary, she'd turn this dumb beast's brain to pudding and reveal herself. After a pause that was just long enough to be uncomfortable, the lusus turned and lumberingly charged away, this time for good.

Tamiya tried to block out the sounds of the lusus with her own odd exclamations, but it was impossible. She moaned and put her face into the crook of her arms, sand getting everywhere on her garb. Someone was talking to her.

It was Sinter. She listened to his words with her eyes facing the sand, blinking away frustrated tears that beaded there. He was right. For once, a suggestion that made sense in this WACKY debacle. It seemed so obvious - stabbing hurts. There was no argument from Kabukidad (though he tended to let Tamiya ride out her tantrums). Alexin seemed to echo the sentiment. And of course, Sinter said the magic words.

Perhaps she had read this wrong. She was too tired to have made a judgement call on the nature of this omen. It was certainly not a controlled environment, and-- could Sinter be right-- maybe it was a good sign after all. A weight felt lifted from her shoulders. Tamiya sat back on her rump and sulked.

The lusus was gone. Now was the time to rest.

As time wore on, Tamiya successfully calmed down. She muttered to the group. "That was an uninformed decision that I made. I was too hasty."

She looked across the sweeping desert all the same, wishing to be rid of this blood-soaked battlefield.

Time to carry on. Tamiya brushed the sand off of her many layers and turned to Kabukidad for the waterskin that he held within his folds. She drank a bit and then returned it with a thankful nod.

The group hadn't gotten much farther before the lusus stormed back in (literally). Tamiya was refreshed but still unsettled -- she threw her net with less gusto than before.

As the group rested, Alexin untangled the nets. Whilst they weren't the strongest of trolls (...weedy, was the word that came to mind) their fingers were quick enough, and they passed out the tangled nets back to everyone with a smile ; shy for Tamiya and a bigger grin for Sinter and Commy's was even accompanied with a salute~

As they were resting, the young troll gave a piercing whistle and waited. A few minutes later a huge lusus came swooping down out the sky ; unreservedly Alexin ran to their lusu and gave what they could reach of the feathers a big hug. The twin heads of Owldadmum reached down to preen their long hair, cooing softly. Alexin smiled into their feathers, safe. Then he got out a packet of dried moobeast jerky and a drink from the pack strapped to the lusus's large leg. He offered the jerky around to people, before putting it back and giving Splitch a shove. The lusus wobbled as they took off, ungainly in the sand and with four overlapping wings, but soon it was a white speck in the sky once again, hovering above the trolls.

As they stopped resting, the lusus came past again and Alexin threw his newly-prepared net!

The rest had done Regina good. When the lusus arrived, she did a few energetic squats while the kids threw their nets, the charged forwards. Light on her feet again, she even did a few fancy flourishes before diving forwards. For the benefit of the wigglers, of course.

Regina's next swing was a little lazy. Her mind was beginning to drift, as she began to recognise the lususes movement, and didn't have to pay as much attention when it was rocking and swaying. One reason why she had joined a group was to eye up the potential youth and new up and commers. As she went through her group, she was dismissive. Nervous wreck of a purpleblood, weak and whiny redblood, and a quiet 'helpful' blueblood who untangled the net of a redblood. What the glub. Seriously.

Regina stood back and, wiping the blood from her sword and bowing with a flourish. "Good riddance! Though let's take bets on how long it takes for the fatty to show up again." She glanced over her shoulder, watching the wounded animal stagger up, then charge away.

Alexin was good at untangling nets. He might be useful. "You unraveled the net quickly," she commented dryly, dipping her head a centimeter as she took it from him.

--

Tamiya recovered her net again. This process was becoming like another one of her rituals. What were the chances that the lusus would come back again? Apparently pretty good with her luck. She carefully reeled in the well-used device so as to be able to unfold it neatly and efficiently if the lusus was to come back, taking every precaution available. A slow murmuring chant began under her breath.

More beetles! Tamiya was overjoyed, her face moving slightly in recognition of the critters. She doled them out to the group once again.
