Good news: I didn't fail Calc, so even though I must retake it at least I still get my scholarship dosh. smile
Also there's a good chance that my irl roleplaying group will be playing a campaign set in my floating island 'verse. I got around to reading up on a roleplaying system called Fate and it's basically like how we roleplay here already, but given mechanics.

When you've been on the internet as long as I have and at as many places, nothing seems shocking anymore.

I may have to work on censoring myself....
anyway, that system sounds intriguing.... it's semi free-form, and it suits my tastes in D&D. except that I do all my fudging as a DM specifically to lord it over the Player Characters in secret.... ninja
nah, that's a bloody lie, I really just BS half my rolls.

I really like how characters are created in Fate, as well as how interactions/combat is handled. I might even be able to use it to train some people to think of roleplaying stuff like I do here. ninja
Dice: I'm pretty sure that every DM fudges the dice at least once at some point in their lives.

dice are either used as guidelines when I'm DM, or else they are merely to provide my players the illusion that what's going to happen is not pre-determined. twisted I like to tell stories, not be a slave to random chance.

I like the clacking of dice yet I'm a pretty terrible liar, so I don't think I'd be able to fudge a whole ton without feeling like a dickhead for it.

abandoning morality makes it easier to stomach being a dickhead. trust me. crossing the morality event horizon is the way to go. it changed my life. ^_^

I know exactly what song you linked to and I didn't even click the link yet. lol
DM fiat is still preferable to rolling the dice and pretending the outcome was something else. If you really want something to happen, there's no point in rolling.
I might need an explanation on how the Fate thing works? I don't really follow.. Also, grats on passing your class
I somehow made it out of my hardest class this quarter with a B, so I'm super happy about that.

I like to think subtlety makes the game go smoother. some how, players generally think that the DM and them all need to play by the same rules with the same limitations... I don't want to shatter that illusion. I agree with you in terms of practicality, but the fact is that it would piss off too many players who would bog down the games with their arguments about how "unfair" or "meaningless" it all is. rolleyes
It wouldn't really be any different than talking about how two guild captains run their roleplays.

I guess it's one of those things that gets a forewarning or discussion with the players. They'll take it better if they benefit from fiats every so often too. A lot of eople are quick to b***h about something but suddenly go quiet when it works in their favor.

Fate is a tabletop rpg like how D&D is a tabletop rpg, except that it has a very different approach to roleplaying - more narrative, not a whole lot of numbers flying around, lots of stuff abstracted away, and players have more agency if not also actively part of building the setting and plot. It reminds me of how we roleplay here, if it were backed by equal parts dice and mutual agreement.
The rules can be accessed through its SRD or downloaded for free on its website.

aye, you got that right. I tend to be more open about my style when I'm using other systems, though. ^_^ it's easier to shift away from the number-crunching when it isn't D&D. everyone expects dice rolls and modifiers and despite the importance of roleplaying that some of them place, they all still build munchkins and metagame.
D&D is really a metagame system in it's most pure form.
I'm gonna try out this Fate thing. I want to explore it's system.
