She looked at the lantern, disappointed that hers didn't light. The mare they were following said it was time to play a game, saying horse and explaining it. "Eagle" was the first thing out of her mouth with little thought of the next animal.

Kallysto
A horrible crunching noise echoed through the forest as the three were swept off of their feet and rushed to meet their end. The rescue attempt was most sadly in vain.

The skeleton opened it's gaping maw in rage as it was assaulted by the tiny stars and it moved to swat them away, hoping to scoop them up and continue its feast.

The darker mare sighed and rushed forward, pulling a paper talisman from her sleeve with her teeth and, after uttering a prayer, hurling it as best she could at the monster.

The Gashadokuro seemed paralyzed at first, throwing its skull back as if it were screaming in pain before it fell apart, a pile of innocuous bones on the ground, a final tinkle of a bell the last noise heard.

"I do not have many of those left," she stated once she was sure it would not move again. "We have to keep moving...I am not sure this will subdue it for long..."

Geyser and Apple: Your valiance has paid off and the mare has managed to rescue you from this encounter. Selflessness is something to be rewarded.

The dark mare quickly leads you down the path, only to be stopped as a huge tree trunk has has fallen over. There is a shimenawa rope wrapped around it and it is almost as if you hear a faint, wisp of a cry.

Your guide remarks that the skeleton must have knocked this tree down and seems saddened.

Do you investigate the tree or simply go around? After all, the last sound you heard lead to fatalities...

Calendula landed on the ground and, with heavy heart, rejoined the party. She had failed to save three people... With a murmured prayer to Madame Sword and Madame Venom to find new, better lives for their lost companions, she picked up her lantern and continued on.

When they reached the fallen tree, she looked to their guide. She seemed so sad...and this rope, it looked too deliberately placed to be something ordinary. Perhaps it was significant, and its falling was significant as well. She stepped forward to investigate the tree.

Lin lifted her nose and snorted at the unmoving monster (her tail twitching as if it was blowing a raspberry at it) and followed the dark mare onward.

She was sad to loose three companions, but she could not help to feel that she should leave with her guide. She said a quick prayer to the high stars, hoping they would find peace in the next life.

She saw the downed tree the mare indicated. She heard the small cry and went to investigate. The sound reminded her of the many nights she cried as a foal, all alone and hurt.

Lin went to investigate the sound, cautiously , but hoped she could help if it were true it was in pain.

((Apple chooses to investigate the tree.))
((Also, the letter game is called Shiritori in Japan ^^""" [If you didn't know ^^""""""""""""""""]))

Miyako stood her ground, true conflict-ion this time. Where she came from, those ropes were nothing new. In fact, deeper in the shrine there was a tree where the three hostile handmaidens liked to gather, surrounded by a wood walkway with such a rope on it. A part of the mare wanted to restore the tree to it's rightful place. Or at least remove the ropes to protect the part of the forest somewhere else. In fact, her mother still put them up from time to time in hopes of keeping the evil ghosts at bay.

But Miyako was also not stupid and she didn't quite trust the noises. The tree had fallen. That might mean bad news for the surrounding area if it cancelled or lowered the protective spell the rope provided. So she decided to try to go around it and hope for the best.

(Memory is telling me there is one more important such tree in the shrine, but I've forgotten.)

Opening the box one would expect some sort of gift, instead however, shadows rush out, a skeleton poking his boney fingers at your face making a grab at you, an Oni Snapping it’s wickedly sharp tusks, Hobgoblins hop out to torment you! Oh woe! What you think to be a snake coils around you and begins constricting your body crushing the life from you…

Nure-onna will feast well tonight. Selfishness is often one's Downfall, you can hear the crow cackling in the background as Nure-onna devours you.

Sorry Dawns. It looks like this was your final stop. With all the shadows and monsters it doesn't look like there is anything the mare can do to assist you! Thanks for playing I hope you had fun!

As the two draw closer the tree seemingly ancient and healthy before it was pushed over by the giant skeleton seems to suddenly light, aglow with spirits though sadly some of them begin to fall and dissolve into nothingness. The ones that remain watch the two who approach curiously having seen their selfless deed though in vain. The mare though saddened still smiles at the spirits that remain.

“They are Kodama,” she explains “Tree spirits.” The mare leans her head in closer, and nods as they seem to speak “They have offered to guide you through their wood.” The mare watched as Miyako continued forward without paying any mind to the tree. “For your generosity, they will lead you safely through this wood. Until we meet again," she spoke cryptically.

Congratulations Geyser and Apple, your good deed has paid off. The Kodama will protect you till the next post! A rare free ride in a forest full of danger.

The darker mare rejoins Miyako taking the lead; the forest is silent and dark. The trees thin finally allowing moonbeams through. Finally fully parted the two emerge from the wood, a beautiful still pond before them though recent flooding seems to have caused it to swell covering the road. The white mare begins to investigate the area before she proposes that you either swim across and she’ll fly your lantern to the other side, or you can both stay together and go around the flooded area.

Either way, the mare wishes you to choose quickly, lest the skeleton reform itself. The protective charm would only hold it so long...

What does Miyako choose? Geyser and Apple, this is also your decision to make but due to the forest spirits, you need not fear.

The lighter mare pales as the lantern flickers to life only to be immediately extinguished by a cool, merciless wind.

"KEEP MOVING!" she cries as the darkness begins to close the gap. A dark claw reaches out for the guide's rear flank and she quickly shouts "TAPIR!", falling off of the t of elephant. The shadows recoil.

"Quick! Light it, light it!"

Berri and SilverTime to think of an animal starting with R.

Both of you need to roll a d20. If either one you rolls a 15 or above, your game has delighted the spirits enough to give you chance to pause and Silver a chance to relight her lantern once again. Just as I warned, it's harder this time...The spirits are getting closer. Won't be much longer now before they finally catch the bearer of the unlit lantern...

Silver, if either you or Berri rolls above a 15, you may post a second time to try and relight your lantern. Roll a d6 and get a 4 or better and you are safe, but be warned, if this roll does not pan out well, it will only get harder from here...

---

You guys know the drill.

As a side note, because Ice and I feel terrible for life eating us for so long with this game, we apologize. Please be patient with us and it will pay off for everyone involved.

Calendula bowed her head to the kodama. "Thank you for your generous offer," she murmured. She picked up her lantern again and followed the other stars along the path to the pond. She was tempted to simply fly over the lake as well--what was the use of wings if she didn't use them?--but she was also aware that it might not be a good idea to split the party, especially since there seemed to be safety in numbers. "As it seems that most of us cannot fly, I think I will go around the pond, if anyone will come with me?" Or even not--the kodama would go with her, she knew, but they might as well stick together.

Miyako decided to continue on her safe route and walk around. She was not foolish to trust whatever lurked below the surface.

Lin giggled as she helped the remaining Kodama. Her tail wagging as if to giggle along with her. She raised a hoof in farewell as the others moved on, her tail wagging as if to say so as well.

Lin listened to the proposal from the mare. She didn't want to be alone, and knew that there was more safety together. She huddled closely to the mare leading them and hoped that going around was better than swimming though water she could not see into.
