She tried to circumvent them without much of a fuss. Most of them were willing to move on, but some were as persistent as the tentacles.
But mermaids were not nearly as fascinating. They were pretty boring, in fact. What good were they to anyone?

Eventually, the mermaids were as bored with her as she was with them. They turned around to retreat.

What were they down here to look for again?
Stones? Yes. Stones. Not tentacles. Despite what all of her actions indicated, she did actually have a scientific purpose for being underwater that did not have anything to do with tentacles.
