Deacon shrugged with one shoulder. "There's that..." He replied casually, only to look back over to her when the ghoul started to sputter when she processed the last of his words.
His face was going to hurt so hard by the trip's end, what with all of these amused grins she was breaking him into. At least he was cheerful, right? This time last year, he'd been anything but cheerful. "Sure you do, everyone has a type that they like." Deacon made a slightly exaggerated motion of an hourglass out in the air in front of him with his hands. "Be it curves on a ghoul, or muscles on a boil." Of course, he had to flex an arm at the second example. "Personality types... Social labels... Career interests..."
He snorted at the final statement that seemed more of a challenge than a dismissal of the subject. "If you could handle me, I'm pretty sure I could handle you."
If he was serious about asking her out, he wasn't very quick about saying it outright. Although, he wasn't really the subtle sort either.

Riyo rolled her eyes as she looked back and noticed him making 'curves' in the air. "Guess that's your type then. I think you're meowing up the wrong tree." And she meant tree in an almost literal sense, because as far as curves went, she had speed bumps on her chest. That was it.
"But as I said before. I don't have a type, b-because I don't date." The ghoul's ears flattened. "I can't do that. It's too hard to get close to somebody already. I'm not a creature built for affection." Or...
... Other things of that nature. HNNGH. no more nosebleeds prs.
"Psch." Was her first remark to his declaration. "Yeah, okay. What a handful. Deacon, king of pussies. Afraid to get his paws dirty. What a challenge."

Deacon frowned at her comment, tilting his head. "Examples!" Sure, he liked a nice rack just as much as the next guy, but typically those particular ghouls were lacking in the brain department. "Better to have a ghoul who isn't afraid to stand up for herself and doesn't take s**t from others. I think that's a couple good traits you have, don't you?"
Plus, they were the same species! That counted for something... Deacon kept that to himself, though, because saying something that could remotely suggest that he wanted scarelings in the future terrified even him.
"Well, if I'm king, you must be queen... Only you're being mean about it and I'm being literal. Besides a clowder that'll eat you out of house and home, what challenges do you think I can't deal with?"
This conversation was becoming less and less about what-ifs and more about why-nots.

Riyo sighed, becoming frustrated with his continuous pursuit and assurance on this subject. She had never claimed to lack good traits, but said traits didn't make her, perhaps... Eligible?
"I feel like you're purposefully being dense about this." Or maybe he wasn't. Not always the sharpest tool in the shed, that Deacon. "Deacon, I-" Her voice halted as she tried to reconsider her words, feet breaking to a halt. "I don't know how." Well... T-that could mean a lot of things. Didn't know how to... What?
"I don't know how... To do that thing... You have to do in relationships." That really didn't make a single thing clearer. "I don't know how to... Y-you know... Love." It was muttered under her breath like the name of someone she despised.
The ghoul sighed miserably, tail drooping. "I don't think you quite realize how big a commitment something like that is from my perspective, and how much harder I'd be to deal with."

"And I feel like you're just being stubborn," the tabby replied without hesitation. When she paused in her steps, so did he, giving her a mildly concerned look.
He was silent himself a few long moments, unsure of how exactly one could explain emotion. Let alone emotion of that sort. "I can't say that I rightly know how, myself. I don't really think it's something that can be taught, Riyo... It just kinda happens. No relationship starts out with it, I suspect, it's something that comes along. Like... Instinct?" Deacon's brow furrowed and he frowned slightly. That didn't sound quite right. He crossed his arms and tapped his chin as if in deep thought.
After a minute, he seemed frustrated himself, lacking the proper words to try and present his view without sounding like (more of) an idiot. "I'll just ask you why you keep putting up with me... What kind of emotions cause that?"
He was ready to hear a snarky response to that. He outright expected it, actually.

She was. Riyo was being very stubborn, because this was a topic she felt that needed it.
But still, she didn't feel Deacon could process exactly what she meant. The demoness had spent the biggest chunk of her life alone, and when she wasn't alone, the only thing she had reaped from company was misery.
"If love was instinct I don't think I'd be where I am today." She was getting frustrated, and a little embarrassed. This conversation had been out of hand from the very beginning, and now Deacon was asking why she bothered with him.
"Stupidity on my part!" Riyo practically shouted and marched her flustered self the few feet it took to reach the maul exit, pushing past the glass doors in a huff.
The truth was though, deep down, she didn't really understand why she put up with the cat boil. The feline tried so hard to push him away. She tried to shove him out of her life, and here he was. Always casually stepping back in.
She'd thought about storming off, but her legs wouldn't allow it. She stayed, tapped her feet, and waited.
"... I don't want to talk anymore. I want to go home."

Deacon might have looked a little startled when the ghoul raised her voice. He shut his mouth to hold back any retort in defense that might try to come spewing out, hoping not to make the situation even more awkward. Or worse, turn into an outright shouting match in a public place.
He viewed them as such simple questions... Clearly, he was the only one.
Following her outside, he stepped up to her in a blessing silence. With her declaration of a change in plan, he just gestured with a flick of a hand in the direction of the school.
Fine. Whatever. Get walking, then.
Maybe she'd cool off on their walk back, or something. He could hope.

Riyo was secretly surprised by his silence, but also relieved. The conversation had been going nowhere good (in her opinion), and the faster she could get back to school, the better.
---
The cat ghoul's feet didn't stop until the dorms were in sight, the idea of lunch tossed out the window when questions of romance and love came to light.
She had played with the idea of turning her brisk pace into a run once they pushed past the demon dorm entrance, but reminded herself that the whole reason she had clothes now was because of him.
Whether the money belonged to his parents or not, Deacon had still wasted his day taking her shopping.
Riyo slowed to a stop a few steps from the entrance and turned around, her eyes turned towards the concrete. "Why don't... We go to dinner tomorrow?" She suggested in a quiet tone, as if someone might overhear. "Fancy or not. I won't complain."

Deacon had followed just a couple of strides behind, apparently deeming it necessary to give the ghoul a little space on their way back.
He really didn't mean to look like a kicked puppy, but it was surely slightly understandable given that he'd ******** up his chance for a real date. Maybe. Surely there'd have been some chance she might've said yes if he hadn't pressured her about the whole love and happiness thing...
When she turned to him, his muscles froze in a total opposite of his mind's idea that he might have to move really fast in just a moment. She hadn't slapped or punched him for anything recently, and this might be that moment. Maybe she actually wasn't going to give him another bloody nose, but instead insist that he speak of this to no one or she'd flash that wonderful photo around to people she presumed he'd hesitate in mauling.
He really didn't expect her to actually change her mind. He'd been talking himself out of the idea all the way back to the school. Sure, it wasn't going to be right now that they went out together, but tomorrow was so much better than never.
Deacon stood with his hands in his pockets, hesitant a moment as his brain went about erasing the messages of no ******** chance and let him have some of his hope back. He blinked dumbly, perhaps thinking he might have heard her wrong. She was kinda quiet about it, after all.
"Dinner?" Deacon repeated in a murmur, like speaking too loud was a deal breaker. "Tomorrow?" His ears perked hopefully.

Why did he look hopeful?
Riyo's brows furrowed at his subtle hopefulness. Was it really that big of a deal for him? Why? "Y-yeah. Dinner. Tomorrow." The feline sighed, tugging at her bags nervously. It was just dinner, right? It wasn't really a...
A...
A date...
N-no. It was just dinner. Between two... Uh. Were they friends? Riyo supposed. "W-what uh... What should I wear?" If it was going to be somewhere nice, she would have to wear something suitable.
