...Suddenly her tail changed into a raccoon's. Despite being alarmed by this suddenly transformation, Xiu made the most of it and grabbed four more coins.

[Xiu backtracking to floor 4]
What an...interesting room. She lifted a finger to her lips as she entered, tapping her bottom lip thoughtfully as she took in the massive window. There wasn't a ton to see though, and it was clear that the gargoyle that was present felt the same way. Of course, upon noticing her, his demeanor immediately changed, shifting from dejected to excited.
She was a little alarmed, to be honest.
However, his request seemed so simple and harmless that she couldn't bring herself to say no, especially considering the look of hope that was evident on his face. Letting out a quiet laugh, she nodded and moved forward, reaching out and brushing her fingers lightly against the window. Like this, right?
Sure enough, not seconds after she made contact with the surface, the window began to shift, as did the scenery outside. Eyes widening, Xiu staggered back a few steps, only to freeze when things finally settled down. This window, that view...it was exactly like the one she had back home. She ran her hands along the familiar cherry wood window frame, and then cupped her hands around the glass and peered out.
Her family garden. Jack, it had been a long time since she had seen that. The brightly colored flowers, the tiny pond full of fish, the stone decorations...she had grown up with this garden, watching it go from bland and half-dead with dried grass to a vibrant and peaceful place. She had never really considered how much time and effort her parents had put into restoring the garden, not until she finally saw it again now...
Perking up when the gargoyle spoke up again, she turned to face him, having almost forgotten that he was even there in the first place. Smiling sheepishly, the ghoul bobbed her head in a polite bow. "Ah--not at all! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do."
She accepted the offered black key and moved back towards the door, pausing only to cast one last look back at the nostalgic scene before leaving.

...Oh Jack, what was going on? Xiu squinted as the spotlight hit her, instinctively lifting her arms in an attempt to shield herself from the blinding light. She could hear applause, and someone with a microphone introducing...
...Her? Woah, wait a minute! She didn't sign up to perform anything!"H-hold it! One, my name is Xiuying, not 'this guy'. Two, you can't just...expect me to suddenly perform on stage! I don't even have anything to--...ah."
She cut herself off, staring blankly as she realized that there was a small black case suddenly sitting right beside her feet. Slowly, she crouched down and popped the latches off, lips twisting in a dry smile as she opened the top. Yup, just as she had suspected. Sighing, the ghoul gingerly lifted the bamboo flute, turning it over in her hands to examine it. When was the last time she got to play one of these? Not since her school life had suddenly gotten so busy (and dangerous), if she recalled correctly. Shaking her head, she straightened up and turned to the crowd.
Might as well, right?
Lifting the instrument to her lips, she let herself relax, fingers moving automatically as she played. It may have been a long time, but it was obvious that he body hadn't forgotten how it was done. She had to admit that, as much as she still disliked being in front of crowds sometimes, it felt pretty amazing being up there with all those eyes watching her. When she finally reached the end of the song, she lowered the flute, the last note fading into silence.
And then applause. Flushing, the baku bowed hastily, only to jump when a shower of confetti came raining down on her. She looked a little bewildered when a plastic crown was placed on her head and a trophy was thrust into her hands, but...
Well, she'd take that black key, at least. Yes, thank you.

[Xiu backtracking to floor 2]
She was unable to hide the look of blatant surprise on her face as she pushed open the door to find herself face to face with a spread of food. Not just any food either--they were her favourites, things that her mother would always make during a special occasion when she was young. The smell of roasted duck and sweet steamed bread filled the air as she moved forward and seated herself. Was it really okay if she...? The ghoul looked hesitant, but after a moment of consideration, she reached out and pulled a piece off of the soft bread, taking a bite.
The little ghoul was beaming as she sat at the table, just barely tall enough to see over it. Her tiny, rounded ears perked up a little as someone set down a plate of food on the table, and then another was put down, and another. It was a feast, a celebration of the new year. Her parents had called up all of their other relatives as well. All around her was noisy chatting and laughing, but the ghoul wasn't as put off as she usually would be. On the contrary, she kind of liked the atmosphere. It felt...warm. Happy.
Xiu's pink eyes grew round as a plate with a single sweet steamed bread was put down in front of her. Tilting her head back, she peered up at her uncle, who chuckled and pat her on the head. "It's your favourite, right? Just don't tell your mom that I gave it to you."
He winked, and the ghoul giggled, sneakily snatching the offered bun off the plate. Tail waving behind her, she tucked herself comfortably against the chair and took a bite.
It was pretty good. Reaching out, Xiu pulled off another piece, though this one proved to be--oddly enough--a little harder to swallow than the last had been.
The ten year's body wracked with each cough, a groan escaping her lips when they finally subsided. Brows furrowing, Xiu kicked her leg out from under the blanket, trying to get some cool air on her feverish skin.
Being sick sucked.
She hadn't eaten anything for the whole day either. Although she knew that she should, she found that everything just made her nauseous. Wontons, dumplings, fried rice--the idea of eating any of those things right that moment make her feel even sicker. She just wanted something simple. Something like--
"Xiuying."
The ghoul perked up at her father's voice, slowly turning around in her bed to face him. Head pounding, she lifted a hand in an attempt to shield her eyes from the sudden brightness as he switched on the light. She said nothing, simply watching him as she shifted forward, the plastic bag in his hand rustling. He was wearing a jacket too, she noticed--where had he gone?
Her question was answered almost immediately as he pulled out a styroform container, sliding it open to reveal a variety of steamed buns. Xiu's eyes must have lit up, because he let out a slow sigh of relief. "You will eat one of these?"
She nodded, already struggling to push herself up. After eying the available buns, she finally picked one out and took a hungry bite.
Each bite was more of a struggle than the last, her mind playing through memories like a movie reel. Before long, she was finally finished eating, and the gargoyle moved forward with a platter in hand. Getting up from her seat, she took the offered mint, popping it into her mouth with a quiet word of thanks before taking the key as well.
