Coming Home
Bhima and Hijil - 300 words

Hijil snuggled into Bhima, not opening her eyes lest the dream mirage of her wife's arms fade away. She kissed her sleepily, lovingly.

It had not been long at all since Bhima had come back to her, but a few days. However, Hijil didn't think she would get used to it at all. Every day she saw Bhima was met with the same delight and joy as the first time. She loved this woman with all of her being, and to see her there, present, actually physically there, was one of the most wonderful things in the world.

Of course, their sleep schedules were off – Hijil still preferred the night and Bhima still preferred the day – but they were working it out as they had before. It would all balance out, eventually.

Speaking of...

She rose reluctantly, careful not to wake Bhima as she tiptoed along the bridges that made up the home she had built, towards the Kinfa's quarters. They were still asleep themselves, but they watched Hijil expectantly as she approached. She gave them their seed – it was best to do this early, so they would not wake Bhima with their screams. Best to do this early, so her wife could get some rest.

She stroked their soft feathers and caught the gleam of her ring in the canopy twilight. It was still new to her, an alien thing that marked her as loved. It was something real, beyond word or deed. It anchored her and bound her to promises and emotion, making them physical and true. Promises such as a journey to Bhima's mother-tree, to ask for their children.

Now physical, Hijil could not break it or delay it. She would go... she had to go. But... should she find Bhima a ring, first? It felt odd to have a ring, and her wife to not. Maybe she would find something later. For now, kinfa fed, she wanted to make her wife breakfast... and so she would.

One Plus One

They'd done it. They'd pled for a child. Hijil had never felt so exhausted in her life - not even when she'd spent her days scrambling to survive to the next. Not even when she'd built their home.

She was emotionally drained, as if she'd actually given something to the tree. But that made sense - of course, the tree would need something from her. To make babies.

The entire concept was rattling to her, a lot to take in, but they were finally here, they had done what they came for, and now - far enough from home to make Hijil uneasy - they were now relegated to waiting.

She knew that neither she nor her wife would ever give up on this. They would go to the tree as many times as they needed to - Hijil knew that, while she might be satisfied with a foundling, Bhima would not. The thought scared her, but it was a hopeful sort of fear.

This would happen. One way, or another.

Now is the Time!

Hijil, Bhima, Eshe

Awe.

It was such a little word for something so vast and scintillating, as incredible as the stars in the sky. It was a lot like looking up at the stars, actually, to see her and Bhima's children brought forth from their flowers.

Awe.

Hijil had once seen a meteor shower. This had been after the... incident... so she had been alone (but she had told Bhima about it and so it was as if she had been there.) She had looked up at the sky, at the stars, at the sudden bright streaks of stars that moved. They were the tears of gods. Spirits in the sky. Sky-jellies that glowed like the shore-creatures did. They were magic, wonder, hope - all in one streak of light that was gone as soon as it arrived. Her heart had fluttered like a nondwa taking flight, her breath had caught at each one. She had lain on her back, looking up at the heavens, trying to catch each one. Trying to find some way to join them, up there, where no problems existed. When she'd looked up, laid down just right, she almost thought she could fall up into the sky. She almost thought she had.

That feeling of not-quite-falling, that feeling of awe and joy and hope, that was what she felt when her children were born.

She looked at Bhima, eyes wide, and then accepted one of the children into her arms. He - HE - was light and full of life, wiggling in his new world. Hijil knew the feeling.

She smiled and cuddled him close, tears of joy falling silently from her eyes like little stars.

Hello, there.
