Bouncing the balloon carefully in his hand, Derek scanned over the other kids in the area. There was a group of kids going at it, much like he and Trev were. ...Derek shrugged. Yep. He could get in on this. The boy tossed the balloon as hard as he could, pegging the boy in the shoulder.

Samantha's feeling of riding high, of being victorious, was vanquished a she moved to pick up another balloon and arched her arm back to throw it. As she was hurling it forward, over hand, the water balloon slipped from her palm, rolled over her fingers, and then dropped onto her own head.

Did it count as a hit if she got herself? No. No, it counted as nothing but an embarrassing failure.

She stood there, stone still as the others battled around her, her eyes filling with tears if only because of her embarrassment alone. The fact that the pieces of balloon were in her hair and she absolutely hated that idea only made the embarrassment that much more keen. Her lower lip began to quiver as she looked around at the other battlers.

Hoping as hard as she could that she had not been seen.

Griffin wasn't really a playground kind of kid. He was more a stick-to-the-sidelines-where-it's-safe kind of kid. So far, that was what he'd done: watching the action from the benches on one side of the yard, doodling in a school notebook he no longer needed to keep neat, smirking as one kid or another was met with a soggy fate. Occasionally, he felt the urge to get up and join them, but that urge was always coupled with uncertainty. What if he got wet? What if he made someone mad at him? What if, what if? No, he decided, it was far safer to watch from a distance.

Until one kid's aim went wide, and a balloon exploded against the bench Griffin was sitting on, soaking his shoes and shorts. He looked down at them for a moment as he processed what happened. His notebook, while not soaked, was splattered with water droplets, preventing him from doing anything else with it. Sitting on the sidelines had just become much less appealing. He had nothing to do, and he was already wet, so...

Carefully, he set his notebook aside, to save it from future attacks. He brushed some of the water off of his shorts. Then he marched for the nearest bucket. Instead of water balloons, like the one that had hit him, this contained soapsuds.

Perfect.

Grinning, Griffin used both of his hands to scoop out a huge chunk of the bubbles. He hadn't seen the person who'd hit him with the balloon, but that didn't matter anymore. He had entered the fray, and having done so, had set his goal: to be the last kid standing. With a battle cry that sounded more like a shriek, he lobbed the handful at the nearest kid, punching the air with his fist when it hit.

Jason was laughing his head off like a loon when he ran up to one of the bubble tubs and with a large handful tossed it at the nearest person. It landed with a satasfiing plop. He didn't even care that the girl he had hit practicly screeched bloody murder in his ear

Another balloon had sailed in his direction, but Briar had managed to get out of its way before it landed.

Briar had lobbed his latest balloon back at the person who he thought had thrown the balloon at him – or at least that had been the plan. Instead somehow he had managed the fumble and the balloon had slid out of his grasp causing him to be the one showered with its watery contents.

This tit for tat thing didn't really seem to be working for him.

Enthused by his success, Griffin looked around for another bucket- and, more importantly, another target. It wouldn't do to hit the same person too many times. Better to spread things out, to wear everyone down equally. There was another boy by the bubble tub who seemed as good a target as any, but first, he had to find some ammo.

Water balloons were good, and bubbles were better still, but when he stumbled across the confetti tub, Griffin knew that he had a winner. His hands were still sticky and covered in soapsuds, but he plunged them into the mound of confetti, tossing a double-handful at Jason.

Eliza giggled as her balloon struck the boy she had been aiming at. She would have left Samantha to find another balloon when she remembered the second balloon she had brought over. Eliza watched as another balloon struck the same boy. She had almost reached for the balloon on the ground before she realized that two balloons had sailed just over her head. Her ducking down had saved her from being struck twice more.

Eliza left the balloon at Samantha's feet and belly crawled towards the nearest tub. In it lay sudsy bubbles. There was also a balloon floating in the tub that looked like it had landed there earlier. Grabbing a handful of suds in one hand and the balloon in the other, Eliza spotted the boy behind the bush. She raced over to share his hiding spot. "Nice throw."

Eliza looked at the bubbles in her hand and drew her arm back before flinging the bubbles forward in the general direction of the fray. She adjusted her grip on the slippery balloon before a giggle escaped her. "This is soo cool."

That was before her green eyes furrowed in confusion as the bubbles missed everyone.

Jason was just standing there laughing when all of a sudden he was being used as a human shield. "Dude? Really?" He said over his shoulder at the kid sheltering behind him. Not that he really cared but principals are principals... "You didn't even hit her man."

He nearly agreed with the kid behind him when he got beamed in the chest by confetti. With him being so wet the confetti stuck and now he was wet, sudsy, and covered in little paper bits. He looked up and there was Griffin, Jason scooped up a abandoned balloon and lobed it right at Griffin.

"Score" Jason called out as the balloon hit.
