Right, that was the word she had been looking for! She turned to eye the stall that Otto pointed out, staring at it--and more specifically, the food--calculatingly. It looked pretty safe, right? Food safe, and all that fun stuff? She opened her mouth to agree, but before she could make a sound, her stomach suddenly growled.
...
"...Well then, sounds good to me, I guess!" Eva chirped, looking a little embarrassed, "Though while we're at it...I'm sure they have grilled vegetables too. Let's get some of those as well...okay?" She poked him in the ribs, lifting her brows at him in amusement.

Otto grinned as Eva's stomach dictated what they'd be getting for certain. Give in to the love of grilled meat, Eva! Otto's grin, however, turned to a grumpy frown. "Veggies? But this is a vacation!" He retorted, rubbing his ribs despite the fact it hadn't hurt. Despite their current disagreement, Otto went ahead and ordered them both some grilled meat. His stomach too, growled as he paid, the smell so strong as they watched it cook.

"What does being on vacation have to do with eating your veggies?" She asked with a laugh, giving him another gentle poke in the ribs. While she was quite patient while waiting for the meat too cook, her stomach was not, letting out embarrassingly loud growls. In an attempt to cover the sounds up, when the cook came by to deliver their skewers, she lifted her hand and held out a bill.
"Could we get some grilled vegetables too, please?"
Yes, Otto. You would eat your vegetables, vacation or not.

It had everything to do with eating veggies. Since he'd been away from home, it was a No-Veggie territory. Fruits were okay, though. Simply because they were sweet. When Eva ordered the grilled veggies, Otto scowled as he took his grilled meat. "Tch. Fine. But I get to coat'em in sauce or salt, okay?"

Letting out a bright thank you when she was handed the skewers of veggies, Eva turned to Otto and let out a fondly exasperated sigh, smiling despite herself. "They're already seasoned though! There isn't really any need for additional salt or sauce, you know?"
Pulling one out of the bag, she blew on it gently in an attempt to cool it down, and then promptly reached out and pressed the first veggie on the stick against Otto's mouth. She may have been grinning.
"Here, try it!"

Well then he didn't have much choice, did he? Hot veggies were suddenly pressed against his mouth, forcing an odd noise to radiate from his throat in surprise. "Ah, fine--" Otto just chomped down on the stick, pulling off the veggies it had once had attached to it. He chewed and chewed the large mouthful of roasted veggie, a noise of contendedness escaping him despite his sour face (maybe it was always stuck that way). "Yer right.. s'good." he admitted, swallowing the mouthful with an audible gulp.

Eva's grin only became wider--and perhaps a tiny bit more smug--at Otto's response, lifting the skewer to her mouth so that she could take a bite too. Mm, nothing like fresh and well-seasoned grilled vegetables! She waited until she had finished chewing and swallowing the piece before turning to wave the skewer in front of the blond, her expression bright and teasing.
"See? Now would I lie to you? She held it out for him again to offer him another bite, and then looped her arm with his and gave him a light tug in the direction of their stuff. "Let's go sit down and enjoy our food and the scenery while we still can, okay?"

Eva had won this round. Her smug smile she wore was like the medal to prove it. "Yeah I'm pretty sure you could and would." Maybe not outright lie, but definitely trick and tease. Regardless, he took another bite when offered, and allowed Eva to take his arm and lead him to their site. "Sure. It's gettin' late anyway." While surfing was fun, he was definitely all surfed out. The blonde wasn't the strongest swimmer anyway, so he didn't want to push it. "It'd be nice if our island was actually sunny, huh?" He mused as they sat at their designated area where there stuff waited. "Or if the beach was actually.. yanno... safe." And not riddled with monsters and hectic choppy waves. Oh well. They could at least enjoy what remained of their day at this normal beach.

Eva's grin faded into a smile as she sat down beside the blond, her expression softening and becoming a little more thoughtful as she absently stared straight ahead. "Right? Though I guess I've grown used to all of it now. Fighting, fogs, monsters--just part of our daily life now, really."
With a sigh, she flopped backwards, arms stretched out at her side as if she were making a snow angel. When she spoke again, her voice was decidedly more chipper than it had been a moment ago. "Buuut, well! It's not all that bad, at least! It's nice actually having friends and people who will look out for you, and if I hadn't come here, I don't think I really would have had either." A sheepish grin, and then she sat back up, pulling her legs up against her chest and setting her head on her knees.
"What about you? I'm curious what you think about our whole...predicament compared to your old life." There was a beat of silence before she quickly added, "If it's not too personal, anyways!"
And then she stole a skewer of meat from him and took a bite, staring up at him curiously.

Eva was right about it. Island atmosphere, and its goings ons, were normal now. It had been a long time. He honestly didn't know what a normal life was anymore. She was also right about the people they knew. If he hadn't become a hunter, despite the suffering attached to the title, he'd probably be a lot less happy. Probably. Not that he ever really looked happy anyway. He smirked lightly, waving a hand and taking some grilled meat for himself. "S'not too personal." Mostly because it was Eva asking. A select few were privy to his mind's inner workings and best kept secrets. "In comparison... I'd have to say I'm happier here. I mean.. there are some glaring similarities I coulda done without.." Like the controlling dominant male figure who scared the s**t out of him, "and I don't really like fearin' for my life, but.. I actually have friends here. I actually let my guard down way more since comin' here than I'd ever did back home.""I'm not sure how much longer I could've gone without the power I have as a Hunter. Like, everyone here is the same in a lot of ways. Right? If we'd never met each other, we'd have gone on thinkin' we really were crazy."

Eva thoughtfully considered his words for a moment before smiling, the corners of her lips turning upwards. "Good point. I didn't actually consider that, to be honest, but yeah! It kind of scares me to think what kind of person I'd be now if it weren't for Deus Ex..."
Obviously not to say that everything was sunshine and rainbows, but at the very least, it seemed like her life now was considerably less lonely than it would have been before, and it was nice knowing that she was not alone. Of course, this also meant that she cared about more people, and therefore had more to lose should a mission go wrong, but...
Frowning at the thought, she sat up straight again, only to flop her head on Otto's shoulder. "Don't do anything to careless out there, okay Otto?" She warned him softly, dropping her usual nickname for him, "It's bad enough if you turn up in the infirmary, but if you don't come back at all..."
There was a long moment of silence, and then she promptly tried to break the tension by stealing a piece of meat off of Otto's skewer, despite having one of her own in her hand.

Otto turned his head down as Eva leaned her head on his shoulder, softly smiling even through Eva's worry. He didn't get many moments like this, serious conversation or not. An arm came around Eva's shoulder, holding her a little closer. "I'll try. But that same logic's gotta apply to you too." He warned, silently appreciating hearing her say his actual name for once. He didn't care to think of how many times he ended up in the infirmary so far. One too many. The teen furrowed his brows and scoffed as Eva stole a piece of his meat. "Hey! You got yer own." He grumbled to no avail. Eva was obviously doing it to be a pest, after all. An adorable little pest. "I'd steal your veggies, but then you'd win anyway."

"I promise to try too," She agreed solemnly, before a weak smile found its way onto her face, "I think I kind of learned my lesson after I got in trouble for the Celes and Bix thing." God forbid anything like that happen again.
Without lifting her head off of his shoulder, Eva shifted so that she could grin up at Otto cheekily, holding one of the vegetable skewers up to his mouth. "If you want to 'steal' some veggies, then be my guest!" There was a long pause, and then she squinted up at him thoughtfully.
"Hey, what's your least favourite vegetable?"

Otto didn't care to remember that incident. He'd honestly thought he was going to lose her back then. He hated when people he knew well got hurt, or found themselves in danger. It made it all seem too real; the possibility of truly losing someone forever. He'd been through that already. Her cheeky grin was met with a grouchy expression and a wrinkled nose. He didn't want to admit they'd tasted better than he thought. He didn't want her to win again. "I'll pass." He snubbed, taking another bite of his meat skewer. "You mean aside from all'of'em?" He sassed, "I guess green peppers. They're just nasty, even on a sandwich.""... You ain't plannin to force feed me disgusting veggies, are you?" He asked with an untrusting gaze.

There might have been a glint in Eva's eyes at Otto's answer, and she lifted a hand to rub at her chin thoughtfully. "Green peppers, huh...?" She squinted into the bag of vegetable skewers and then frowned, suddenly pushing herself up to her feet. Just as she was about to rush off, she paused, stooped down, and kissed Otto on the cheek.
"I'm doing this for your own good, puppy."
And then off she went. Before long, she returned yet another bag in her hand, humming cheerfully to herself as she flopped back down beside the blond.
No points for guessing what was in the bag. "It's not force feeding if you eat them willingly, right?"
