The gates opened wide for the Regina, and she shouted up, "Keep the gates locked shut. No one leave this land or enters it!" Her voice echoed with force. She was holding back her tears, as she made her way back to the hut she shared with the Rex. She quickly entered, having half run there. She shut the locked the door, sliding down to the floor, and burying her far win her hands, crying. She rarely cried, but for her people, she would cry. That herd was fresh food, and it was gone.

They were killed. Slaughtered. She hunted, but they only took what they needed. This was a direct, assault to the predators of the region, those who hunted here. But at this time of year, only the lions hunted in that area. Someone did this on purpose. She stopped crying, and dried her eyes. She got up, and calmed herself best she could. She made her way to the Rex, her voice steady. "The herd is gone. Its been slaughtered. The meat was inedible. Something poisoned them or did something to them. It would be death to eat them, I fear." She was deadly serious. She was afraid for her people. They would panic if they knew someone out there could slaughter a whole herd.

She thought of her son and was thankful he was with his friends, and not around to see the despair. She was also thankful she only had the one child. Shed almost had another, but in the hot summer, shed gotten sick and lost consciousness. It had gone south from there. Needless to say, she only had Conner, and she was very thankful for him. He was strong and healthy, every lioness mothers dream.

Khen & Rhen - Werelion Enforcers

The brothers looked up with twitching ears when they were called to attention. Both stood up quickly, standing at attention. They bowed their heads once in acknowledgment of their lord before walking a pace behind him. The twins stayed close to their charge outside of the gates, each keeping a watchful eye on the surroundings as well as the pride king.
When the Rex dug up the remains of their own, khen's ears went down. No pride member wanted to see one of their own in such a way, and a proper burial was indeed needed. Rhen glanced at his brother, sharing the same expression before trotting after the lord. Soon they were back in the safety of their walls and nodded to their king. The guards closed the gate behind them, and the red heads followed the king, waiting outside. Khen was pulled aside, and he nodded, the two giving a respectful head bow as the man walked to his own hut.
"If only there was something we could do." Rhen sighed, shaking his head. His ears were pressed back, the sadness in his heart plain on his face. "Like what?" Khen returned, his lips puckering into a frown. "We already have our jobs, and it keeps us busy enough. I wish to help as well, but we must help by doing what we can in our own field. If the Rex want's us to do something, he will command it." Rhen nodded, knowing this already. "Yeah, I know. He sighed again and stood on the opposite side of the hut entrance as his brother. They didn't stand so close to the door as to open it, but close enough to keep a watchful eye on all who passed by.

The rex was silent. Death Silent. Growling, he sighed and pulled a chair up to his desk and started to write slowly. Something he would say. He gave up after awhile. He wasn't any good at speeches and he was already in a rage. His hands and arms flexed as he struggled to contain it. The Rex roared and slammed his fist into his desk, splintering the wood. He growled until the door was opened.

Turning around, he was about to yell when he saw Azura come in and start to weep. He waited softly, staring at her until she came over. He blinked and listened to her report and he stood up. "You are sure all of them are inedible?" He asked. His voice soft, but razor sharp. A whole herd? Gone? His thoughts flicked to the Wolf, but he pushed them away. That wolf was injured there was no way he could have killed a whole herd. He sighed and sank into his Skin Chair and he put his head in his hands. This was bad. He grunted and sighed once again. He pushed everything aside and locked it away. When he spoke next, his voice had no emotion, it was flat and dull. "The lioness' body is with the others. When the sun begins to set, the proceedings will begin. I need to work." The Rex got up and pulled his wife up gently and kissed her forehead. "We will get through this. We always have." He smiled, which turned into a grimace and he let her go and then he walked out of the hut and into the sunshine.

Closing the door, Dustin walked past everyone and nodded when the greeted. But he walked to the south side of the village, were there were some stones that needed to be moved so another hut could be built. The Rex stripped his shirt off and placed his bow and arrows down against the side of a hut and set out to work. Hoisting a stone up and resting it on his knees, The Rex then pushed it over his head and walked a short distance and tossed it to the ground, letting it fall with a thunk. He did the same with the others until he was sweating and his arms slightly ached. He had moved all the stones over and left a good area for a hut. Here is where Amber would stay. She was part of the Pride and deserved the same protection that the rest of the Pride did. Dustin sighed and sat down and crossed his legs, and waited.

She nodded, his words a comfort. She pushed her worry away and composed herself. She was regina and she needed to act wih dignity and strength. She moved and walked to the window, opening it. She looked out and from far could see her husband composing a structure, no doubt for Amber. She sihed softly, hoping the girl would come live in the safety of her pride. Despite her weakness, she was still a lion. One simply can't ignore their nature for the nature is their own.

The lioness stood up and exited her home, waking towards the cluster of homes near the middle edge. She smiled brightly as her young soon rushed up to her and hugged her leg. He was a mass of golden blonde hair. She frowned and leaned down, touching his arm gently. She generated a small layer of ice over an area of his arm. "You have been out in the sun a bit long. Go inside and play with your friends," he smiled and rushed off to do as his mother asked.

Like her, he was sensitive to the sun and exposure burned him easily. As he got older it would getter better. He has a growing power over healing, and as he grows and matures so will his gifts. Over time, he will be fine. She had no power over healing and had to be careful how much time she spent under direct sunlight. She walked to the prisoner huts, intending to question them about spy activity.

Dustin was to involved with his work to realize that his wife had left the hut. He picked a small shovel and started to dig. in the little trench, he would place the logs for the small hut. Here, after the contraption was built, Amber would live inside the walls.

Dustin worked long and hard. The trench was made and he was carrying logs over with a few guards. They hoisted them up and set them in a circular fashion. Then from there, they tied the logs together and filled the trench in to secure the logs. Dustin sighed and called another guard over. "Help them finish alright? I'm going to the prisoners." The guard shivered and nodded then set to work.

Dustin strolled to the Prisoner's hut. Smells of blood, tears and fear ranked here. Most of the blood was Azura's doing. But he had his fair share of blood shed. Pushing the door open, he blinked at the sight of his wife. "Oh hello dear." He smiled and walked over to her and placed a hand on her shoulder. "Shall we have some fun together?" he asked in a soft voice.

She had not been in the prisoners hut long, when her husband, showed up. He seemed a bit surprised to see her there, but then offered to join her. She smiled, an evil and slightly cruel smile, and walked near the prisoners. She looked at each one, as if seeing inside their very souls, before finally picking one. She smiled, used her key to unlock the prisoners chains, and dragged the prisoner to a second room, where she tied him to a chair. She tended to do her torture in the room, where the other prisoners could still hear, the only exception was the execution the day before. Executions, she does wherever she wants, its torture she does in the room.

The Regina pulled out her knife and trailed it along the prisoner's chest. His chest was already covered in knife scars, a simple gift from the Regina. "Now, I would like to ask you again, what information you learned here. Please feel free to stay silent, Id love to play with you some more." The spy kept silent, but fear was clear in his eyes. He whelped as she slowly pushed the knife into his chest, but not too deep. She did not want to kill him. She pulled the knife out and froze the wound. After all, it wouldn't do to have him die from infection.

The spy is a tiger, most likely a rouge. But as a spy, he would die, but first she had to know what information he had learned. After all, shed caught him sneaking around her own house. Not a good thing..especially since he'd been carrying seven different weapons on him. Of course, somehow, shed taken him down, along with some help from the guards. "Really I would hate to have to kill you. Your talking will save you pain, but it would be a shame for me. I like my play toys."

Dustin watched and followed his wife into the room. He grinned at her display of mercilessness and her lack of care. He grinned as he watched her stick the blade into her victim then pull it out and freeze the wound. Chuckling and making his presence known, the Rex stalked forward and growled, fangs coming out. He whispered in the Tiger's ear and he smiled, "I suggest you tell her what she wants to know." And then he sank them into the male's shoulder. His eyes switched as he snarled and tugged gently at the man's flesh. He nodded to Azura and kept his mouth on the man's shoulder. The man knew that Dustin's teeth her starting to sever his tendons and muscles. So if he was smart, he would start to tell Azura. But what he didn't know what that he was going to die anyways.

Why should one fight?

Amber starts finishing up her hunting having gotten a total of five rabbits she wondered if she over did it as she heads back to her hut she stops outside the door she could smell Azura scent had she been here while Amber was out hunting. She shakes her head and goes inside but Azura smell was there as well. She sets her food down and heads to the wall watching till one of her few lion friends showed up. "Hey Moo." it was her friends nickname, "Do you know why Azura was at my hut?" Her friend smiles a little and shoots down to her, "Ya they want you to move inside the wall Dustin even having people build you a hut so get in here already."

Amber looks up at her friend she didn't really understand, "But but they hate me." Amber shakes her head. the lions been locked up all day. It must be what ever was making them do that. "Oh ya I got some rabbits for you Moo I'll go get them." She runs back to her hut and sits down. She'll take Moo a rabbit in an hour. By then moo should be back in the area.

Still what if she went inside the wall she trusted lions about as much as she trusted anyone else. Yes she had Moo but moo didn't care if Amber messed things up, and well Amber always brought Moo rabbits and fish when she over does it. Moo liked food it was why people called her Moo. So One friend and how many other lions were there? Most didn't trust her she would be as good as a spy. She know any spy found was tortured and killed. Would that happen to her or would people stay away like they do now? She was just starting of thinking of leaving and being on her own. Could it be the disappearing Lions that makes them think she should come in? Most likely. She glances at her arm where she been shoot the night before then at the arrow she just thrown on the floor. It was night maybe they didn't know it was her or it was Jay she hated Amber, and was Amber's younger sister.

The tiger was starting to really panic, never before having been interrogated by the Rex and Regina both. They were quite a frightening sight, together. The Regina smiled, and reached up to the buttons on her dress, and slowly undid them, one by one. She let her dress slide to the floor, and took the knife, and made a small cut on his wrist. "Lets play a game. Tell me what I want, or I eat you for dinner." The tiger looked confused, and very scared. The lioness smiled, and got down on her knees, and cocked her head to the side. "Did you know, tiger, that it was a tiger rogue, who hunted me? A small little thing, like you. He followed my hunting party and injured one of my friends, oh, and killed my unborn child. I must admit that I still harbor a grudge..." She shifted forms.

Walking to the man, she growled, and he began screaming. "I'll talk! God, please! I'll talk!" She shifted back to human form. "Yes?" The prisoner nodded, and in pain, talked. "I learned about the hunting parties, and that you take the children out every third week or so, and that you have a small section of our wall that is damaged, from a fire. And you....you have weapons stored in your lands. From the old wars. Thats all I know I swear!" She stood up and walked to the Rex.

"Hmmm...what do you think?" She asked. She had picked up her knife, and started playing with the prisoner again. Blood covered his body, and he looked half starved. Its a miracle he's lasted this long, actually. The tigers always were harder to break....

Dustin continued chomping on the man's shoulder, but paused when she asked him what he thought. Dustin grinned, his animalistic features still showing. "Well, I think the wall must be rebuilt, the weapons returned to the wall and we change the young patterns of going outside." He backed away and allowed Azura to play a bit more. When the man's screams started to annoy the Rex, Dustin growled and walked over, snaking his head around and he chomped his fangs around the man's throat. Shrieking and gargling, the man tried to free himself but only tore his throat more. Blood poured into the Rex's mouth and he snarled. He was feral and satisfying his blood lust. The man then twitched and was still.

The Rex pulled his face away from the man, blood dripping from his chin. He smiled charmingly to his wife and then said. "Come along, Regina. We have to do the burials." He held out his hand for her to come along. Before the Burials would progress, Amber would be in here and joining them. And Azura would deal with it.

Why should one fight?

Sitting with her back to the door wasn't getting anything done. So Amber who still needed to skin and prepare the rabbits, before she could go back and give her friend anything, began the messy work and starts singing softly. She really did enjoy singing however she wouldn't do it around anyone. It also made the work seem to be done so quickly. With the work done she puts the few cleaned rabbits over the fire and adding some wood to the fire to heat it up some more. Having them cooked maybe she should go back in anther hour to see Moo it had already been a hour and the rabbits needed to cook. Some reason she could salt cook meat easier then uncooked meet to store it.

With the meat cooking she again had time to think. could she really move into the walls? Moo thought it was a great idea but that was Moo for you. Always helping everyone as long as there friends and well food made you friends in Moo's mind. However most other lions stayed away thinking she was cursed or something, Maybe she was. Moving in would be more lonely there be no where to escape to if the gates remained locked.

Amber starts packing her things she had to do one of two things. One move into the walls and be a normal lion, or well whatever. Two move far away and become her own lion not worrying about the others. Which she did worry about them so it be hard to stop doing that. She didn't really pack much just her flute, what dried cooked meet she had, three changes of cloths. She really wished then that she had some kind of weapon other then her teeth and claws at this point. and what she did pack fit in one small back the cooking meet would be anther bag. She really did have very little but she never needed not to care for anything else. Well nothing else she could carry.

With packing done Amber checks on the cooked meat it was ready she'll take it to the wall now any hopefully give it to Moo. Still one thing remained should she let the fire burn her home down or put it out. It was an easy choose after getting the meat packed she dumps some water on the fire making it go out. She was finally done and heads out her door and into the woods for the short walk over to the wall where she just waits for Moo to show up.

She watched as the Rex, killed the man, of course, the man's fear caused him to react a certain way, which caused him to die faster. Funny how one's destruction is almost always a direct result of their action or inaction. She watched at the Rex held out his hand for her. Back up, she reached down the floor picking up her dress, and putting it back on. She taken it off, so she could taunt the tiger. Plus she had a lovely little scar from his kind, that she wanted to make sure he saw. It was part of her motivation for hating the tigers, especially the rogues. Smiling, she walked back over to the Rex, putting her knife back into its sheath. They had things to do, like bury their dead with respect.

Pausing, she asked, "Did you want me to speak in your place? I know that you sometimes are not quite sure what to say at these things, and with so much going on....do you want me to speak for you?" She asked softly, as they exited the prisoners hut. Her feet, bare as always, made small tracks in the snow. It was a bit cold, but there was not too much snow. It was heating back up. They always had the strangest weather patterns, but soon it would settle down. At least, one could hope. Though she prefers the blizzards, for herself, and hates them for her people. Few have the gift of ice like she and Conner.

She thought about Amber. The two did not get along, so no long gushy conversations, but she was Regina, she could be civil. But the two should not be left alone. Azura is a lioness, in every sense of the word. She is highly competitive, and her nature compels her to keep the upper hand. A good thing for keeping trouble makers in check. But it could complicate things, sometimes. For example, there was a reason mating was a lifelong thing for most species, especially the lions. Lions are territorial, things go south when sometimes tries to take what its theirs. A smile spread across her face, as she recalled her young friend, Ciara. Shed lived outside the perimeter, until a rogue had tried to hit on her. Her husband came home....they came home the next day. They had buried the rogue nearby , and had decided to come home...not many lions live away from the safety of home.

[[I keep trying to establish more about the lions as I go. Each species is so unique, that its hard to convey it all. I have this image in my head for all of them, but its hard to make it all translate to written form. ]]

Dustin walked softly and silently with his wife, hand in hand. He thought about what he would say. All the Lions that had died were friends of his. They were loyal and very protective of their ways. Dustin had been on several contracts with them all. Sighing, Dustin tried to clear his troubled mind.

Dustin was yanked out of his thoughts when Azura asked him if he wanted her to speak in his place. Part of him wanted to say yes, but the other part refused. He needed to say his piece. As Rex, it was his responsibility to speak; even if he hated it. So, to answer her he chuckled. "Oh, Azura. If I didn't speak, what would people think of me? I can go against hundreds of Were's but I can't find the courage to speak for a few minutes in front of everyone? No, I can speak. But you may also if you wish to." He gave her hand a soft squeeze and he smiled.

Suddenly, Dustin paused. There was a scent outside the walls. He grinned and shook his head. Amber was outside. He called to the door guards, "Open the gates and let Amber in." The guards nodded and the doors creaked open for the Lioness. Dustin nodded and waited by the door. "Now Azura, I know you hate Amber, but be civil. Please? I don't want to witness another fight, as amusing as the last one was, but I don't want one tonight. Understand, dear?" He wasn't mad. His voice betrayed the fact that he was slightly amused. A slight purr had sneaked its way into his speech. He winked at his wife and chuckled again.

She accepted his decision with grace. He was right to say such. His people respected him, but lions respect strength, loyalty, and courage. As king, he must have it all. As must she, but she is second in command. He will always be looked to first. And as they walked to where the ceremony would be,he spokme of Amber. It was true that the two did not get along, but she was Regina. It was her duty to protect her people, not pick fights with them. "I'm not going to eat the girl. Just do not leave us alone for very long. My patience is reserved for the children."

She loved the children. It was amazing, considering her mind for torture. Yet, she loved her son very much, as she loved all her people. She even loved her husband. Love seems like such a foriegn concept to a people who respect brute strength, but love did exist among her people. They did not do arranged marraiges. The males have to woo the females. Usually a male will end up with a female close to his own ability. After all, the males are most attracted to the strong females as well. It all explains why the Rex and regina always end up being the best their age group has to offer. That and the son of the rex is always held to a higher standard. They had to prove their worth in order to be named Rex. A weak Rex would lead to invasion and destruction of the pride.

Dustin laughed at Azura's comment and rolled his eyes. "Trust me. Last thing I need is you and her alone with each other." He chuckled and looked over her and then kissed her forehead. "Let's do this." He smiled and walked with her to the ceremony site.

Dustin left his wife at the front of the gathered men and women, along with the children. He walked up a little ways and turned around, standing in front of the graves that had been dug. He sighed and placed his hands behind his back and took a deep breath and the words seemed to pour from his mouth. "This...This isn't something natural. We shouldn't have to bury own own before they are weathered and gray with age. But, this tragedy, must remind us that everyone's life is easily snuffed out. Now, we must say good bye to those whom have died, knowing that they will not suffer anymore." He smiled and looked down at the graves and knelt by each one and touched them all on the brow, murmuring. He was blessing them, something that was never seen before.
