Things always seemed to get colder suddenly around leaf-bare... maybe it was because the water around the camp took a long time to cool down, or it was always just like that but Shadowpaw hadn't realized that in till now. There was something about lead-bare that always caught her attention, maybe it was how the ice glinted and the snow sparkled. There was a lot of ice around Riverclan, mostly because of where their camp was located.
Though that wasn't the thing the dark grey female was worried about.. Shadowpaw had more important things to worry about, more important than her freezing paws and her ice cold nose. More important than the shaking of the muscles right under her fur, trying to keep her warm. Her green gaze was set and cold, sweeping the ground. This was greencough season, and already cats were getting sick. They had been unprepared.. completely caught off guard. Even her mentor, Reedfur, was sick with a nasty case of this sickness that always seemed to loom over the Clans during leaf-bare like a nasty storm cloud. It always threatened the life of the cats in every clan, and it was the one thing that all the clans struggled with. It was one of the worst enemies for medicine cats alike. There were a few herbs that could do the trick, and it was her job to find these herbs and bring them back to the clan, everyone was counting on her. The usually clumsy and noisy apprentice was now quiet, focused.. balanced. She had a job to do, and she had been trained enough for this.
There was one problem though.
It was mid Leaf-bare! It was going to be impossible to find catmint, an already rare plant, anywhere! But she had to do it, she knew she could do it. She knew chickweed didn't grow anywhere around the riverclan territory so only catmint was her only way of saving her clan.. "Why didn't we save up on tansy when we had the chance?" She wined to herself. The trip was long, it was cold, and she was just so close to giving up! Despair hit her heart like a thunderpath monster. She had lost all of her hope in this trudge through weather that wouldn't stop and help her for even a moment. Her favorite season had turned against her. She turned, and started heading back to the camp. Halfway back, however, a faint scent reached her.. and she recognized it.... Catmint. She followed the smell as quick as she could and found a sheltered patch that seemed untouched by the cold of leaf-bare. Her eyes widened, had Starclan helped her after all? There was no way this fragile plant could have survived here on it's own!
But she took no second thoughts of snatching the plant up. She had a clan to heal after all, and she wasn't going to reject the help of starclan. She picked up as much Catmint as she could hold in her mouth, and hoped it would help. She raced back to the camp like she had a pack of dogs at her back, and made it to the camp soon enough. The camp was almost completely bare, and it pierced her heart like a claw.. but it was alright now. She ran to the medicine den and up to where Reedpelt slept.
"Reedpelt! Reedpelt, I got it!" She yelled after gently placing the plants down, she would strip the leaves from the stems in a little while and then crush it up to give to the cats. Her excited expression soon fell however, as her mentor didn't answer her. "Reedpelt?" The gently prodded the cat with her paw, trying to turn the massive tabby over. "..... Reedpelt?" There was still no answer, and as the seconds passed, realization sunk in. She was too late to save her mentor. She gave the massive brown tabby a heave and gasped as she finally got him to turn over. The realization was made reality when her eyes fell upon her mentor's dull golden ones. She took a step back.. then another.. then one last one before sinking to the ground, her paws unable to hold her up any longer. She closed her eyes and let out a loud caterwaul, the despaired cry echoing through the camp and up to starclan, up to her mentor.
She stayed like this for a while, silently grieving before pushing herself up on to her unstable paws and forcing herself to suck it up. Reedpelt wouldn't want her to mourn his death while the clan suffered.. that could wait in till after she treated all the sick cats. She slowly walked back over to the catmint, her legs slightly shaking. She would be the new medicine cat now.. She would have to be brave, be strong for her clan.
