What I really liked about PotS was that it was so different. While we got so much magic in the first two series of this world, this is a great change of pace. This shows the other side. The side that usually scorns the magic, but it gives more reasons, and someone who is willing to at least mediate and accept the differences. I love that Kel gets freaked out by magic (especially Daine's magic), even though she knows to let healers take care of her; it gives her a weakness that I enjoy. Characters with no weaknesses are weak in themselves. I also love the way she remains still as a calm lake, the imagery there is fantastic. She really shows that a normal person could do what Alanna did, without being touched by, or spoken to by, the gods. Instead, she had the Chamber, even though the chamber didn't really help her. It just said, "You gotta kill this man!" and left her on her own.
The fact that Kel also diverts attention from herself to other people when she's done something is very realistic and humble. I love that about her. In all, she's a very likable character, and I'm glad this series was so different from the others. I think it adds a nice change of pace, and it breaks up the time between Daine and... well that girl that's George and Alanna's daughter. I'm positive there's got to be lots of magic in that one.
