Down was used to waving them off in a walk of shame, generally unwilling to move after a night of... activity, but the doe was clearly incapacitated by an odd sort of grief that he found at once ego-boosting and baffling. How much care could one doe have? She really had been the right one. Moments passed as he watched her remain in mourning silence, and he decided he'd had enough of her wallowing. He heaved himself up, gradiented wings on his sides flexing and shifting in his movements, and casually strolled past her still body. Onwards he went, hooves beating strong and rhythmic against the ground, before he came to a halt - and with uncanny precision, turned just a tad off north to meet an intense, glowing gaze, said " so you are the fool, brother," and laughed.* * * * * * *

When he'd had the courage to search again, he glimpsed his sons walking the grove together - a sight accompanied by a heavy lurch in his chest. So Down was done with her...how was that doe now? Her name...Be Mine? It instilled a sense of urgency, and he broke into a gallop, seeking the girl that his blood likely wrecked. He ran for hours, forced on several occasions to pause and gasp for air, for Filament, though earnest, was not much of a stud. He called, he pleaded with the Motherfather for him to find her, to find Be Mine. And eventually the Motherfather led him to her: he saw her colours from the gaps between mangrove roots, and picked his way through the tangle to approach like he had once before. " Be Mine?" He asked, hesitant now that he'd found her. Ruriska what did SHE ever do to YOU??

If Filament had not found her, she might never have found the strength to move again. But as his voice slowly penetrated her grief, Be Mine first flicked an ear and then opened her eyes. It took another long moment before she shifted her head to look up at the buck, offering a weak and trembling smile. "… hello…" Maxx D It’s for her own good. c: I’m doing this to show how much I care.

Filament had never been a particularly fatherly father, for his mate was a strong, enigmatic dreamwalker, and Filament was a kind, but aimless buck. He'd been an awkward, hooves-off parent when he discovered his children existed, and whether by nature or lack of nurture, they had turned out... variably. He believed, guiltily and regretfully, that he had no paternal instinct - but once faced with Be Mine's tragedy, a deep sense of pain, protectiveness and sorrow replaced the former dread in his heart. With a visible cringe, he attempted to return the smile...then shook his head with shame. He let this happen. " Hello, Be Mine." He whispered gently. " It's me, Filament. I - I'm so sorry."

Sorry. Filament’s pity caused a small sob to escape. It seemed he knew, without even needing to be told, the source of her pain. She had been the only one blind to Down’s true nature. "It was my fault." She said finally, her voice empty and her eyes sad. Be Mine began to rise, slowly pushing her body upright. "I gave my heart too easily."Yet still she loved him, and that was the worst part.

No, it was mine, he struggled, watching her rise. It was my fault. I should've warned you. It shouldn't have happened. It was my fault. But again, he lacked the courage, instead lowering his remorseful gaze and said, solemnly and urgently " no, it wasn't. Please don't blame yourself - you were never at fault." He swallowed, concerned that he was worsening the situation, and instead offered clumsily: " if there anything I can do for you, Be Mine? Get something to eat? Bring you to a berry plant? Anything?"

The thought of food made her feel ill and she quickly shook her head. "N-no, thank you… I appreciate it…" Even with Filament right there, Be Mine felt terribly lonely. His reassurances did little to bolster her spirit. Her insides had been torn out, her heart a broken mess. "I want..." The closest thing she had to a mother, "Vexed." She looked at Filament, her gaze now pleading. "There somebody I want to be with. Help me find her, please."Normally Be Mine relied on Fall for directions, but the bird had been missing over the last few days. Maxx D You know why he’s been missing, Be Mine? HE’S DEAD.

Filament's glowing eyes were wide with dismay, then half-lidded with guilt as she responded in trails...and widened again as she requested this 'Vexed' - his connections did not reach far in the swamp, but the least he could do was try. She certainly didn't seem capable of going anywhere very well on her own. " I would love to, but I've not met her before..." He noted, and asked earnestly " how might she look like, Vexed? Or where does she roam, usually?" He'd get her there; it was the least he could do. Ruriska Kentucky Fried Songbird???

Be Mine gave him a sad but grateful smile and proceeded to describe both Vexed and the tree where the doe lived in as much detail as possible. When she was done, she had finally found the strength to rise. Now that Filament was here, the thought of being left alone again was something she couldn’t bear. They would find Vexed together and she would get away from the site of her agony. "Thank you, Filament. Shall we go?" Maxx D He was finger lickin’ good!

Both the doe and her living quarters sounded particularly distinctive - now that he knew the details, he could almost recall the romantic feather-tree in the distance (first scaring him, then captivating him from afar). Filament was greatly encouraged as she stood, and nodded enthusiastically (almost inappropriately so) at Be Mine. " We'll find her," he promised, and set off. * * * * * * *

Somewhere a bird was singing. It was a pretty little songbird, plump and preened, and it warbled a delightful tune of spring and things. WhzzzzzzzzzTHUNK - The pretty little songbird sang no more. Gloomily, My Trouble dragged her heels over to her handiwork and ambled the few steps back to her tree, fowl in mouth. She would pluck it later.
Pluck it later! Her compulsions had plagued her so completely that she had never dreamed one day she could think a thought so apathetically against everything desperate she had ever done in their name. But that obsession had finally met its match: Vexed was depressed.
Depressed, distressed. Worried, weepy, sad. Her children had flown the coop, every last one, and she had not been prepared for that gnawing mother's fear...nor the loneliness. The feather tree was very, very quiet of late. "Just you and me now, Bruise," she murmured - regardless of the fact that Bruise was working farther outfield today in lieu of her sloth. She was starting to talk to herself. It was that bad.
Just then, at the height of her delusion, her sharp hunter's ears pricked at the sound of hoofbeats clipping closer - two sets. She swiveled and peered...there. It was Be Mine, and she had brought a friend. The faint stirrings of life began to unfurl within her chest: Be Mine was so near and dear to her, if anybody's company could cheer her up, hers could. Pushing her limbs into a decent canter, she went to meet them halfway...but...no...oh no...no...
...As the gentle doe stepped ever closer to the feather tree, it became increasingly apparently that she was not...herself, or well: her hoof-falls stumbled, her eyes stared down into the ground. The buck that was with her was not merely walking alongside - every few steps he slowed to steady her lurching frame.
Something was terribly wrong.

When the feather tree finally came into view, Be Mine was forced to stop walking as the wave of relief that washed over her made her legs go weak. The trek had felt endless, with Be Mine caught between endlessly reliving her last moments with Sideways Down and the embarrassment of being incapable of anything without Filament there to help her. He had been so very patient while she had been so very useless. The sight of Vexed rushing towards them nearly broke her and she blinked rapidly to fight back tears. Be Mine took a moment to recover, resting heavily against Filament, and as Vexed drew closer, finally stumbled to meet her. She silently sought comfort from the pale doe, moving forward to press her cheek against the others.

"Oh, darling," she murmured, low and soft, nuzzling her shoulder, her neck, whatever she could, "oh, darling, you're here now." But she did not dare say 'everything will be just fine', not while she did not know what everything was, only the fearful whispers beating in her chest. And she did not dare ask.
With anxious eyes, she sought the face of the buck, to see what it might tell.

" It was a buck," he said quickly, and soon felt bad for trivialising her state, helplessly adding " a...a very bad one." With that, he looked away from her gaze, reluctant to admit his part in the sordid story.

“It doesn’t matter now.” Be Mine spoke quietly from her place beside Vexed. “It’s over.” That was a lie. It would never be over and she would remember this pain until her last breath, but just for a moment, she wanted to try forgetting.
