Charon wiped his tail at Peeta again while trying to stop Johanna from tearing all his flesh off the bone. He butted her hard with his head, the horns scraping across her face as he got back to his feet.

"Come on boy, just going to stand there?"

Blood from all three soquili dripped onto the stone floor, mixing into one giant puddle. Johanna was able to take a piece of the stallion as she attacked, but it did not keep him distracted for long. He turned his attention to Peeta, his tail lashing out at the unicorn. Damn it, Peeta thought, he lost his opportunity to attack while thinking of his attack. Screw it, he thought, what do I have to lose? If we do not get out of here alive, we most likely will never live to see the sun again. With quick movements despite his metal leg, Peeta attacked with his horn, scratching the Kalona stallion.

How much blood did the kalona need to loose before he would lose consciousness? Peeta fervently hoped that he was close to the max amount of blood loss, he was not sure that he or Johanna could take anymore lashings from the green stallion and still have energy to flee from the clutches of the Capitol.

Johanna slammed her body heavily into the green kalona again as Peeta lunged for him to. The floor was slippery with blood, and with the force of her body and the dodging of the stallion, she slammed into the wall along with the green kalona. There was a resounding crack.

She was breathless on the floor, no air would come into her lungs as she tried to gasp. Then suddenly, she could breath again. She felt dizzy and sick as she slipped to her feet.

The kalona was down, his head bloody from the wall. Dead or wounded, it didn't matter. She'd love to finish him off, but...there wasn't time. "Peeta, we've go to go." She gasped out.

He stared at the limp body of the green kalona, he was not dead for he could see the slight rise and call of his chest as he inhaled and exhaled. Peeta’s blue eyes looked to Johanna, she was about to collapse on her hooves. He nodded her head in consent, “Let’s get out of this wicked place.” He closed his eyes for a second and took in a deep breath and felt a slight tickle of air against his mane, he opened his eyes wide, “This way!” he hissed to Johanna, he did not want to raise his voice and alert the other capitol dogs. His hooves continued to clatter on the stone, but there was nothing he could do about it. The air was becoming fresher and soon a light appeared at the end of the tunnel. Could this really be it? Where they almost free from the clutches of the Capitol? It was too much to hope for, but yet the stallion felt the emotion serge in his chest. He would see Katniss soon.

Johanna could barely breathe as she ran, her side and head were pounding. She was covered in blood, but she was forcing herself to move. It was just like the arena, and she hated it. Hated the whole damn place.

She could smell the outside, the rain...She shivered. She coudn't stop now.

Boredom is such a terrible thing to have, especially when it involved rain. He had hoped guarding prisoners would be somewhat entertaining, especially if they tried to escape. But all was quiet much to his annoyance. Mother had told him that he was to become allies with the Kalona’s and learn from them. He did not question her wisdom, for he knew that she was wiser than he ever hoped to be, and she was the Great Goddess of Vengeance, he was just her minion. Sounds from down below drew him from the haze of boredom. The prisoners have escaped. Oh such wicked glee filled his being in that moment. Soon he would have fun.

The rain had continued to pour, and would make fleeing from the cave much more difficult. He stood not far from the cave mouth, waiting patiently for the first pathetic weakling to experience a small taste of freedom. The kalonas were truly worthless if they could not even contain two soquili down in the cave system, but the stallion could not think about that now. How should he deal with them? Pretend to be an ally, give them some taste of freedom and then lead them back to their previous captors? Yes, that is exactly what he was going to do. He called to a guard that was hidden in the woods and told him his plan, the guard shared the spark of wicked glee and went silently to tell the others to hold back. It was all so perfect, now it was time to get into character.

He was able to pull up the fake persona well, he made himself covered in mud and caused a little pant to his breath as if he had been running a while. What were the names of the prisoners again? Oh yes, Johanna and Peeta.

Johanna was the first to make it to the cave mouth, he ran up to her. “Johanna! I was sent to help you and Peeta escape from here. It seems I missed all the fun. I’m Vorty.” He gave her a slight bow, his breath still heaving, “Where is Peeta?” The plan would not work with only one of them. Peeta soon followed after Johanna, his limp causing him some trouble on the slippery water soaked earth. Vortigern knew that they would mistrust him at first; for they would be stupid if they trusted him whole heartedly after the type of ordeal they just went through, “Is anyone following you? Don’t worry I am a friend.” For his fake persona every word he spewed from his mouth was true, Vorty was their friend and would continue to be their friend until Vortigern decided otherwise. “Come on! Let’s go before more of the Capital’s guards come after you.”

He had slowed before he made it to the entrance of the cave, his limp keeping him from running at a faster speed, so soon Johanna had passed him and entered into the rainy world above. His breathing was labored, freedom was close and it made his heart soar. He slipped into the rain soaked world, his hooves unable to gain traction on the mud beneath them. Peeta looked up in surprise to a muscular stallion with a broken horn and glittering scales ushered them away. Questions filled his head but he could not ask them, “No, no one was following us. Yet.” Who was this stallion who said that he was there to help? It almost seemed too good to be true, but so far he was the only creature in this desolate place willing to help them. With a wary nod, he began to follow the stallion, unsure what the next few hours may bring, but at least he was free.

Johanna shivered painfully in the light rain, cringing as each drop hit her and made her think of the torture she had endured. Her pulse throbbed painfully in her ribs and she felt breathless. The world swam in front of her as she looked at this "friend". Gritting her teeth she forced a deep gulp of air into her aching chest.

"And what did you do fall on your way to get us?" She looked at him warily, mistrust sharp in her eyes. By nature she was not trusting, the Games and life had taught her that.

Blood poured in a thin strand from her forehead as she glanced over at Peeta with a shrug. For now they'd follow him. Heck she'd follow Oyohusa if it meant getting out of these caves forever.

Charon's head felt heavy as a boulder. There was blood in his mouth, the sharp metallic tang of it brought him vaguely to his senses. The world spinned and whorled in a confusing pattern before steadying. Gingerly, he moved to his feet his body swaying. What had--

They'd escaped!

He drew back his lip in a fierce snarl, his long jagged teeth gleaming in the low light as he scented the air for them. His eyes focused in finally on a blood drop. Hastily, he searched for more and found himself following a trail up to the light and rain.

Something moved and he struck out viciously crunching his hooves into the object's side. After a moment, the huddled mass on the floor that he was kicking seemed to come out of it. Shouting at him to stop that Vortigern had them and was leading them back.

He gave another kick for good measure and moved slowly upwards, ready to exact his revenge on that wench and the cripple.

Vortigern looked down at his mud covered body. Perhaps he had been over zealous with his mud bath. “I had a little scuffle, there were guards in these woods. I had to take them out before we could flee or we would be in for a much larger fight and you two do not look up for it.” He gave them a once over with a critical eye. “You both look like hell and you would be more of a hindrance in a fight than a help. C’mon, time is wasting. I would like to get out of this place as soon as possible. I don’t know how long it will take for the Capitol to realize their guards have been removed from their posts.” He walked deeper in the woods, soon his coat would be clean of the mud he rolled in and only be on his legs as he walked through soaked earth. How long should he give them hope? Longer would be better, but he did not want to get too far away from the Capitol. It was a good thing that there was another entrance to the large cavern that held the prisoners. It was about a days walk north east of their location. The kalonas had found a magnificent cave to house those who spoke out against them. It was actually quite amazing that Johanna and Peeta had found their way out, instead of getting lost in the catacombs. Perhaps they were just lucky. “There is a safe house about a day’s walk from here, maybe two at Peeta’s pace. We will still be deep in enemy territory, so we will not be able to stay there long. Just long enough to treat injuries.”

At Johanna’s words, Peeta took another look at the stallion who said he had come to save them. He was covered in mud, it was like Johanna had said, did he fall into a muddy puddle as he ran here? And then their savior spoke, he had fought the guards watching this place. Peeta knew that it made sense to have sentries, but how did the stallion know where to find them? Perhaps he was just that skilled. The limping stallion wondered who sent him and if the person who sent them had Katniss or was it another player on this twisted chest board?

A safe house in enemy territory, it sounded like an oxymoron. How could someplace be safe in a hellish land like this one? Vorty was being straight with them and Peeta knew that he would slow them down. He could tell them that they could go on without him, get to the safe house, but then they run the risk of Peeta being captured and him being tortured to give up the location Jo and Vorty. He could not let that happen.

Johanna kept back slightly, wincing as she walked. Some animal instinct told her things were dangerous still. She didnt't want to dwaddle. Even though she didn't trust him, for now she had to follow him. She didn't know where else to go with Peeta--she'd risk it if it wasn't for him. But she had grown fond of him, she guessed that happened when you found yourself intimately attuned to each other's screams of pain.

"How many she asked cautiously?" She eyed him for wounds.

Charon's whole body ached as he followed the trail left by his prey. Vortigern was leading them to what they thought was safety. Little did they know that he would be there. He'd kill them both of i he was allowed....but if not, he would make them both suffer for what they'd done.

The soft murmmer of their voices ahead told him that they were following the stallion. Stupid, stupid little tributes. The rain pattered down on his head softly as his hooves made soft sucking sounds in the mud.

Soon.

Vortigern paused to think back, “Two. The others I was able to take out using a knockout potion. I keep with me a pack of herbs for just that sort of occasion. I had been watching the cave for a while trying to judge its weakness. That is when I learned I could poison the guard’s food storage. The ones that I had a scuffle with were the ones that did not eat from the poisoned stash. And I am a very good fighter; it would have been a shame upon those I trained under if I let the enemy lay a scratch upon my body.” He said as he caught her staring at him, it was the truth. He was a good fighter; his mother would not have had it any other way. If he failed, she would have killed him herself, so he trained to be as strong as he could be to make his Vengeful Goddess mother proud.

Peeta stared at the stallion, his specialty was poisoning people. Was he an assassin? His suspicions arose but since there was nothing that he could do against the stallion in his weakened state, Peeta just continued to follow the assassin through the rain. “Who trained you how to fight?” He had wished that he had known how to fight before he had been thrust into the games, but it was frowned upon, only the wealthier districts had been able to train their tributes in the art of war and death. No. He shook his head, he had not wanted to know how to fight, but the Games forced him to learn. He used his strength to his advantage and his ability to camouflage had saved his life. Although he still would have died if Katniss had not found him when she did – the wound to his leg had been terrible and the only way the doctors were able to fix it was by binding it in metal pieces. Now it made him slow compared to his comrades, who could have left him in the dust if they so wished.
